In addition, it warns (and taints) if the CWG is larger than ARCH_DMA_MINALIGN as this is not safe with non-coherent DMA. A lot of warn_unused_result warnings existed in 2006, but until now they have been fixed thanks to people doing allmodconfig tests. Our goal is to always enable __must_check where appropriate, so this CONFIG option is no longer needed. I see a lot of defconfig (arch/*/configs/*_defconfig) files having: # CONFIG_ENABLE_MUST_CHECK is not set I did not touch them for now since it would be a big churn. If arch maintainers want to clean them up, please go ahead. Make stackleak_track_stack() save all register that it works with. Use no_caller_saved_registers attribute for that function. This attribute is available for x86_64 and i386 starting from gcc-7. 2. Insert calling stackleak_track_stack() in asm: asm volatile("call stackleak_track_stack" :: "r" (current_stack_pointer)) Here we use ASM_CALL_CONSTRAINT trick from arch/x86/include/asm/asm.h. The input constraint is taken into account during gcc shrink-wrapping optimization. It is needed to be sure that stackleak_track_stack() call is inserted after the prologue of the containing function, when the stack frame is prepared. In the case of no_sanitize_undefined, it is the first version that supports UBSAN, which is GCC 4.9. The use of Linux on Itanium appears to be limited to enthusiasts that occasionally boot a fresh Linux kernel to see whether things are still working as intended, and perhaps to churn out some distro packages that are rarely used in practice. None of the original companies behind Itanium still produce or support any hardware or software for the architecture, and it is listed as 'Orphaned' in the MAINTAINERS file, as apparently, none of the engineers that contributed on behalf of those companies (nor anyone else, for that matter) have been willing to support or maintain the architecture upstream or even be responsible for applying the odd fix. The Intel firmware team removed all IA-64 support from the Tianocore/EDK2 reference implementation of EFI in 2018. (Itanium is the original architecture for which EFI was developed, and the way Linux supports it deviates significantly from other architectures.) Some distros, such as Debian and Gentoo, still maintain [unofficial] ia64 ports, but many have dropped support years ago. While the argument is being made [1] that there is a 'for the common good' angle to being able to build and run existing projects such as the Grid Community Toolkit [2] on Itanium for interoperability testing, the fact remains that none of those projects are known to be deployed on Linux/ia64, and very few people actually have access to such a system in the first place. Even if there were ways imaginable in which Linux/ia64 could be put to good use today, what matters is whether anyone is actually doing that, and this does not appear to be the case. There are no emulators widely available, and so boot testing Itanium is generally infeasible for ordinary contributors. GCC still supports IA-64 but its compile farm [3] no longer has any IA-64 machines. GLIBC would like to get rid of IA-64 [4] too because it would permit some overdue code cleanups. In summary, the benefits to the ecosystem of having IA-64 be part of it are mostly theoretical, whereas the maintenance overhead of keeping it supported is real. So let's rip off the band aid, and remove the IA-64 arch code entirely. This follows the timeline proposed by the Debian/ia64 maintainer [5], which removes support in a controlled manner, leaving IA-64 in a known good state in the most recent LTS release. Other projects will follow once the kernel support is removed. This patch makes PAGE_OFFSET the constant, it'll always be 0xC * 1 gazillion for 64-bit. To get a physical address from a virtual one you subtract PAGE_OFFSET, _not_ KERNELBASE. KERNELBASE is the virtual address of the start of the kernel, it's often the same as PAGE_OFFSET, but _might not be_. If you want to know something's offset from the start of the kernel you should subtract KERNELBASE. It will write to somewhere near flags on the stack but not actually into it and overwrite some other value. I saw this happen in the ide_device_add_all function when running in a simulator I work on. I'm assuming that some quirk of how the simulated hardware is set up caused the code path this is on to be executed when it normally wouldn't. A simple fix might be to change "=g" to "=r". This is due to us including vmlinux.lds.h. Jakub explained that the problem is that we put the alignment requirement on the type instead of on a variable. Type alignment is a minimum, the compiler is free to pick any larger alignment for a specific instance of the type (eg. the variable). So force the type alignment on all individual variable definitions and remove the undesired dependency on vmlinux.lds.h. For instance, we have 31 definition of pgd_offset() for 25 supported architectures. This instruction is needed by the kernel and userland as part of the base ABI (including GCC atomic builtins, certain threading packages, future atomic support in the C++ standard, etc). However, correct operation of this instruction requires some cooperation by hardware external to the processor (such as bus bridge, bus fabric, or memory controller). Minimally exercising this mechanism and reporting explicit status early in the boot process is helpful to chip vendors using the Linux kernel as a benchmark of correctness of hardware. As it turns out, S32C1I is not exercised by the kernel and by uClibc based userland as of early June 2008. This is expected to change soon as both incorporate more recent open source developments. This has a few problems: - It uses dynamic symbols (.dynsym), for which the linker refuses to allow more than 64k sections. This can break features which use '-ffunction-sections' and '-fdata-sections', including kpatch-build [1] and Function Granular KASLR. - It unnecessarily uses GOT relocations, adding an extra layer of indirection for many memory accesses. Instead of using '-fPIE', resolve all the relocations at link time and then manually adjust any absolute relocations (R_390_64) during boot. This is done by first telling the linker to preserve all relocations during the vmlinux link. (Note this is harmless: they are later stripped in the vmlinux.bin link.) Then use the 'relocs' tool to find all absolute relocations (R_390_64) which apply to allocatable sections. The offsets of those relocations are saved in a special section which is then used to adjust the relocations during boot. (Note: For some reason, Clang occasionally creates a GOT reference, even without '-fPIE'. So Clang-compiled kernels have a GOT, which needs to be adjusted.) On my mostly-defconfig kernel, this reduces kernel text size by ~1.3%. This ABI mandates symbols to reside on a 2-byte boundary, enabling the use of the larl instruction. However, kernel linker scripts may still generate unaligned symbols. To address this, a new -munaligned-symbols option has been introduced [3] in recent gcc versions. This option has to be used with future gcc versions. Older Clang lacks support for handling unaligned symbols generated by kernel linker scripts when the kernel is built without -fPIE. However, future versions of Clang will include support for the -munaligned-symbols option. When the support is unavailable, compile the kernel with -fPIE to maintain the existing behavior. In addition to it: move vmlinux.relocs to safe relocation When the kernel is built with CONFIG_KERNEL_UNCOMPRESSED, the entire uncompressed vmlinux.bin is positioned in the bzImage decompressor image at the default kernel LMA of 0x100000, enabling it to be executed in-place. However, the size of .vmlinux.relocs could be large enough to cause an overlap with the uncompressed kernel at the address 0x100000. To address this issue, .vmlinux.relocs is positioned after the .rodata.compressed in the bzImage. Nevertheless, in this configuration, vmlinux.relocs will overlap with the .bss section of vmlinux.bin. To overcome that, move vmlinux.relocs to a safe location before clearing .bss and handling relocs. Compile warning fix from Sumanth Korikkar: When kernel is built with CONFIG_LD_ORPHAN_WARN and -fno-PIE, there are several warnings: ld: warning: orphan section `.rela.iplt' from `arch/s390/kernel/head64.o' being placed in section `.rela.dyn' ld: warning: orphan section `.rela.head.text' from `arch/s390/kernel/head64.o' being placed in section `.rela.dyn' ld: warning: orphan section `.rela.init.text' from `arch/s390/kernel/head64.o' being placed in section `.rela.dyn' ld: warning: orphan section `.rela.rodata.cst8' from `arch/s390/kernel/head64.o' being placed in section `.rela.dyn' Orphan sections are sections that exist in an object file but don't have a corresponding output section in the final executable. ld raises a warning when it identifies such sections. Eliminate the warning by placing all .rela orphan sections in .rela.dyn and raise an error when size of .rela.dyn is greater than zero. i.e. Dont just neglect orphan sections. These are: 1. max_physmem_end - end of physical memory online or standby. Always <= end of the last online memory block (get_mem_detect_end()). 2. CONFIG_MAX_PHYSMEM_BITS - the maximum size of physical memory the kernel is able to support. 3. "mem=" kernel command line option which limits physical memory usage. 4. OLDMEM_BASE which is a kdump memory limit when the kernel is executed as crash kernel. 5. "hsa" size which is a memory limit when the kernel is executed during zfcp/nvme dump. Through out kernel startup and run we juggle all those values at once but that does not bring any amusement, only confusion and complexity. Unify all those values to a single one we should really care, that is our identity mapping size. The different callers sometimes use a specific number like 0xdeadbeef to indicate a specific failure, the early boot code uses 0 and some other calls sites use __builtin_return_address(0). At the time a dump is created the current PSW and the registers of a CPU are written to lowcore to make them avaiable to the dump analysis tool. For a CPU stopped with disabled_wait the PSW and the registers do not really make sense together, the PSW address does not point to the function the registers belong to. If the overlap check fails the system will oops instead of printing a warning. Furthermore because it's so early in boot the console is not up and the user doesn't see the oops, they just get a dead system. Fix it by printing an error instead of calling WARN. The Hygon Dhyana CPU also discovers num_cache_leaves via CPUID leaf 0x8000001d, so add support to it in find_num_cache_leaves(). Also add cacheinfo_hygon_init_llc_id() and init_hygon_cacheinfo() functions to initialize Dhyana cache info. Setup cache cpumap in the same way as AMD does. The low level page table accessors (pXY_index(), pXY_offset()) are duplicated across all architectures and sometimes more than once. For instance, we have 31 definition of pgd_offset() for 25 supported architectures. Most of these definitions are actually identical and typically it boils down to, e.g. static inline unsigned long pmd_index(unsigned long address) { return (address >> PMD_SHIFT) & (PTRS_PER_PMD - 1); } static inline pmd_t *pmd_offset(pud_t *pud, unsigned long address) { return (pmd_t *)pud_page_vaddr(*pud) + pmd_index(address); } These definitions can be shared among 90% of the arches provided XYZ_SHIFT, PTRS_PER_XYZ and xyz_page_vaddr() are defined. For architectures that really need a custom version there is always possibility to override the generic version with the usual ifdefs magic. These patches introduce include/linux/pgtable.h that replaces include/asm-generic/pgtable.h and add the definitions of the page table accessors to the new header. This patch (of 12): The linux/mm.h header includes <asm/pgtable.h> to allow inlining of the functions involving page table manipulations, e.g. pte_alloc() and pmd_alloc(). So, there is no point to explicitly include <asm/pgtable.h> in the files that include <linux/mm.h>. Give those functions a valid stack by moving uml_postsetup() in the init_thread stack. This moves enables a panic() call in this early code to generate a valid stacktrace, instead of crashing. E.g. when an UML kernel is started with an initrd but too few physical memory the panic() call get's actually processed. I'd rather not duplicate the four known host vmsplit cases for each of these symbols. I'd also like to calculate them based on the highest userspace address. The Kconfig language seems not to allow calculation of hex constants, so I moved this to as-layout.h. CONFIG_STUB_CODE, CONFIG_STUB_DATA, and CONFIG_STUB_START are now gone. In their place are STUB_CODE, STUB_DATA, and STUB_START in as-layout.h. i386 and x86_64 seem to differ as to whether an unadorned constant is an int or a long, so I cast them to unsigned long so they can be printed consistently. However, they are also used in stub.S, where C types don't work so well. So, there are ASM_ versions of these constants for use in stub.S. I also ifdef-ed the non-asm-friendly portion of as-layout.h. With this in place, most of the rest of this patch is changing CONFIG_STUB_* to STUB_*, except in stub.S, where they are changed to ASM_STUB_*. defconfig has the old symbols deleted. I also print these addresses out in case there is any problem mapping them on the host. The two stub.S files had some trailing whitespace, so that is cleaned up here.
