It turns out we fixed this data exposure problem since by always creating unwritten extents for delalloc conversions due to more data exposure problems, but the writeback path doesn't actually support extent size hints when converting delalloc these days, which probably isn't a problem given that people using the hints know what they get. However due to the way how xfs_get_extsz_hint is implemented, it always claims an extent size hint for RT inodes even if the RT extent size is a single FSB. Due to that the above commit effectively disabled delalloc support for RT inodes. Switch xfs_get_extsz_hint to return 0 for this case and work around that in a few places to reinstate delalloc support for RT inodes on file systems with an sb_rextsize of 1. If the file being unlinked loses its one nlink, we then have to put the inode on the unlinked list. This requires us to grab the AGI buffer of the whiteout inode to take it off the unlinked list (which is where whiteouts are created) and to grab the AGI buffer of the file being deleted. If the whiteout was created in a higher numbered AG than the file being deleted, we'll lock the AGIs in the wrong order and deadlock. Therefore, grab all the AGI locks we think we'll need ahead of time, and in order of increasing AG number per the locking rules. The current extent list implementations leads to heavy pressure on the memory allocator when modifying files with a high extent count, and can lead to high latencies because of that. The replacement is a b+tree with a few quirks. The leaf nodes directly store the extent record in two u64 values. The encoding is a little bit different from the existing in-core extent records so that the start offset and length which are required for lookups can be retreived with simple mask operations. The inner nodes store a 64-bit key containing the start offset in the first half of the node, and the pointers to the next lower level in the second half. In either case we walk the node from the beginninig to the end and do a linear search, as that is more efficient for the low number of cache lines touched during a search (2 for the inner nodes, 4 for the leaf nodes) than a binary search. We store termination markers (zero length for the leaf nodes, an otherwise impossible high bit for the inner nodes) to terminate the key list / records instead of storing a count to use the available cache lines as efficiently as possible. One quirk of the algorithm is that while we normally split a node half and half like usual btree implementations we just spill over entries added at the very end of the list to a new node on its own. This means we get a 100% fill grade for the common cases of bulk insertion when reading an inode into memory, and when only sequentially appending to a file. The downside is a slightly higher chance of splits on the first random insertions. Both insert and removal manually recurse into the lower levels, but the bulk deletion of the whole tree is still implemented as a recursive function call, although one limited by the overall depth and with very little stack usage in every iteration. For the first few extents we dynamically grow the list from a single extent to the next powers of two until we have a first full leaf block and that building the actual tree. The code started out based on the generic lib/btree.c code from Joern Engel based on earlier work from Peter Zijlstra, but has since been rewritten beyond recognition. From the call trace, it is evident that iget was trying to construct an incore inode from the ondisk inode, but the attr fork verifier failed and we were trying to undo all the memory allocations that we had done earlier. The three assertions in xfs_ifork_zap_attr check that the caller has already called xfs_idestroy_fork, which clearly has not been done here. As the zap function then zeroes the pointers, we've effectively leaked the memory. The shortest change would have been to insert an extra call to xfs_idestroy_fork, but it makes more sense to bundle the _idestroy_fork call into _zap_attr, since all other callsites call _idestroy_fork immediately prior to calling _zap_attr. IOWs, it eliminates one way to fail. Note: This change only applies cleanly to 2ed5b09b3e8f, since we just reworked the attr fork lifetime. However, I think this memory leak has existed since 0f45a1b20cd8, since the chain xfs_iformat_attr_fork -> xfs_iformat_local -> xfs_init_local_fork will allocate ifp->if_u1.if_data, but if xfs_ifork_verify_local_attr fails, xfs_iformat_attr_fork will free i_afp without freeing any of the stuff hanging off i_afp. The solution for older kernels I think is to add the missing call to xfs_idestroy_fork just prior to calling kmem_cache_free. Found by fuzzing a.sfattr.hdr.totsize = lastbit in xfs/399. H A D | xfs_qm.c | diff 0a97c01c Thu Nov 30 12:40:18 MST 2023 Nhat Pham <nphamcs@gmail.com> list_lru: allow explicit memcg and NUMA node selection Patch series "workload-specific and memory pressure-driven zswap writeback", v8. There are currently several issues with zswap writeback: 1. There is only a single global LRU for zswap, making it impossible to perform worload-specific shrinking - an memcg under memory pressure cannot determine which pages in the pool it owns, and often ends up writing pages from other memcgs. This issue has been previously observed in practice and mitigated by simply disabling memcg-initiated shrinking: https://lore.kernel.org/all/20230530232435.3097106-1-nphamcs@gmail.com/T/#u But this solution leaves a lot to be desired, as we still do not have an avenue for an memcg to free up its own memory locked up in the zswap pool. 2. We only shrink the zswap pool when the user-defined limit is hit. This means that if we set the limit too high, cold data that are unlikely to be used again will reside in the pool, wasting precious memory. It is hard to predict how much zswap space will be needed ahead of time, as this depends on the workload (specifically, on factors such as memory access patterns and compressibility of the memory pages). This patch series solves these issues by separating the global zswap LRU into per-memcg and per-NUMA LRUs, and performs workload-specific (i.e memcg- and NUMA-aware) zswap writeback under memory pressure. The new shrinker does not have any parameter that must be tuned by the user, and can be opted in or out on a per-memcg basis. As a proof of concept, we ran the following synthetic benchmark: build the linux kernel in a memory-limited cgroup, and allocate some cold data in tmpfs to see if the shrinker could write them out and improved the overall performance. Depending on the amount of cold data generated, we observe from 14% to 35% reduction in kernel CPU time used in the kernel builds. This patch (of 6): The interface of list_lru is based on the assumption that the list node and the data it represents belong to the same allocated on the correct node/memcg. While this assumption is valid for existing slab objects LRU such as dentries and inodes, it is undocumented, and rather inflexible for certain potential list_lru users (such as the upcoming zswap shrinker and the THP shrinker). It has caused us a lot of issues during our development. This patch changes list_lru interface so that the caller must explicitly specify numa node and memcg when adding and removing objects. The old list_lru_add() and list_lru_del() are renamed to list_lru_add_obj() and list_lru_del_obj(), respectively. It also extends the list_lru API with a new function, list_lru_putback, which undoes a previous list_lru_isolate call. Unlike list_lru_add, it does not increment the LRU node count (as list_lru_isolate does not decrement the node count). list_lru_putback also allows for explicit memcg and NUMA node selection. In some cases it's not possible to determine a good name at the time when a shrinker is allocated. For such cases shrinker_debugfs_rename() is provided. The expected format is: <subsystem>-<shrinker_type>[:<instance>]-<id> For some shrinkers an instance can be encoded as (MAJOR:MINOR) pair. After this change the shrinker debugfs directory looks like: $ cd /sys/kernel/debug/shrinker/ $ ls dquota-cache-16 sb-devpts-28 sb-proc-47 sb-tmpfs-42 mm-shadow-18 sb-devtmpfs-5 sb-proc-48 sb-tmpfs-43 mm-zspool:zram0-34 sb-hugetlbfs-17 sb-pstore-31 sb-tmpfs-44 rcu-kfree-0 sb-hugetlbfs-33 sb-rootfs-2 sb-tmpfs-49 sb-aio-20 sb-iomem-12 sb-securityfs-6 sb-tracefs-13 sb-anon_inodefs-15 sb-mqueue-21 sb-selinuxfs-22 sb-xfs:vda1-36 sb-bdev-3 sb-nsfs-4 sb-sockfs-8 sb-zsmalloc-19 sb-bpf-32 sb-pipefs-14 sb-sysfs-26 thp-deferred_split-10 sb-btrfs:vda2-24 sb-proc-25 sb-tmpfs-1 thp-zero-9 sb-cgroup2-30 sb-proc-39 sb-tmpfs-27 xfs-buf:vda1-37 sb-configfs-23 sb-proc-41 sb-tmpfs-29 xfs-inodegc:vda1-38 sb-dax-11 sb-proc-45 sb-tmpfs-35 sb-debugfs-7 sb-proc-46 sb-tmpfs-40 [roman.gushchin@linux.dev: fix build warnings] Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/Yr+ZTnLb9lJk6fJO@castle Reported-by: kernel test robot <lkp@intel.com> Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20220601032227.4076670-4-roman.gushchin@linux.dev Signed-off-by: Roman Gushchin <roman.gushchin@linux.dev> Cc: Christophe JAILLET <christophe.jaillet@wanadoo.fr> Cc: Dave Chinner <dchinner@redhat.com> Cc: Hillf Danton <hdanton@sina.com> Cc: Kent Overstreet <kent.overstreet@gmail.com> Cc: Muchun Song <songmuchun@bytedance.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> diff 86d40f1e Thu May 26 18:21:43 MDT 2022 Darrick J. Last cycle we merged the necessary infrastructure in 256c8aed2b42 ("fs: introduce dedicated idmap type for mounts"). This is just the conversion to struct mnt_idmap. Currently we still pass around the plain namespace that was attached to a mount. This is in general pretty convenient but it makes it easy to conflate namespaces that are relevant on the filesystem with namespaces that are relevent on the mount level. Especially for non-vfs developers without detailed knowledge in this area this can be a potential source for bugs. Once the conversion to struct mnt_idmap is done all helpers down to the really low-level helpers will take a struct mnt_idmap argument instead of two namespace arguments. This way it becomes impossible to conflate the two eliminating the possibility of any bugs. All of the vfs and all filesystems only operate on struct mnt_idmap. This converts all filesystems supporting idmapped mounts to make use of these new helpers. For now we always pass the initial idmapping which makes the idmapping functions these helpers call nops. This is done because we currently always pass the actual value to be written to i_{g,u}id via struct iattr. While this allowed us to treat the {g,u}id values in struct iattr as values that can be directly written to inode->i_{g,u}id it also increases the potential for confusion for filesystems. Now that we are have dedicated types to prevent this confusion we will ultimately only map the value from the idmapped mount into a filesystem value that can be written to inode->i_{g,u}id when the filesystem actually updates the inode. So pass down the initial idmapping until we finished that conversion at which point we pass down the mount's idmapping. No functional changes intended. The getattr inode operation is altered to take two additional arguments: a u32 request_mask and an unsigned int flags that indicate the synchronisation mode. This change is propagated to the vfs_getattr*() function. Functions like vfs_stat() are now inline wrappers around new functions vfs_statx() and vfs_statx_fd() to reduce stack usage. ======== OVERVIEW ======== The idea was initially proposed as a set of xattrs that could be retrieved with getxattr(), but the general preference proved to be for a new syscall with an extended stat structure. A number of requests were gathered for features to be included. The following have been included: (1) Make the fields a consistent size on all arches and make them large. (2) Spare space, request flags and information flags are provided for future expansion. (3) Better support for the y2038 problem [Arnd Bergmann] (tv_sec is an __s64). (4) Creation time: The SMB protocol carries the creation time, which could be exported by Samba, which will in turn help CIFS make use of FS-Cache as that can be used for coherency data (stx_btime). This is also specified in NFSv4 as a recommended attribute and could be exported by NFSD [Steve French]. (5) Lightweight stat: Ask for just those details of interest, and allow a netfs (such as NFS) to approximate anything not of interest, possibly without going to the server [Trond Myklebust, Ulrich Drepper, Andreas Dilger] (AT_STATX_DONT_SYNC). (6) Heavyweight stat: Force a netfs to go to the server, even if it thinks its cached attributes are up to date [Trond Myklebust] (AT_STATX_FORCE_SYNC). And the following have been left out for future extension: (7) Data version number: Could be used by userspace NFS servers [Aneesh Kumar]. Can also be used to modify fill_post_wcc() in NFSD which retrieves i_version directly, but has just called vfs_getattr(). It could get it from the kstat struct if it used vfs_xgetattr() instead. (There's disagreement on the exact semantics of a single field, since not all filesystems do this the same way). (8) BSD stat compatibility: Including more fields from the BSD stat such as creation time (st_btime) and inode generation number (st_gen) [Jeremy Allison, Bernd Schubert]. (9) Inode generation number: Useful for FUSE and userspace NFS servers [Bernd Schubert]. (This was asked for but later deemed unnecessary with the open-by-handle capability available and caused disagreement as to whether it's a security hole or not). (10) Extra coherency data may be useful in making backups [Andreas Dilger]. (No particular data were offered, but things like last backup timestamp, the data version number and the DOS archive bit would come into this category). (11) Allow the filesystem to indicate what it can/cannot provide: A filesystem can now say it doesn't support a standard stat feature if that isn't available, so if, for instance, inode numbers or UIDs don't exist or are fabricated locally... (This requires a separate system call - I have an fsinfo() call idea for this). (12) Store a 16-byte volume ID in the superblock that can be returned in struct xstat [Steve French]. (Deferred to fsinfo). (13) Include granularity fields in the time data to indicate the granularity of each of the times (NFSv4 time_delta) [Steve French]. (Deferred to fsinfo). (14) FS_IOC_GETFLAGS value. These could be translated to BSD's st_flags. Note that the Linux IOC flags are a mess and filesystems such as Ext4 define flags that aren't in linux/fs.h, so translation in the kernel may be a necessity (or, possibly, we provide the filesystem type too). (Some attributes are made available in stx_attributes, but the general feeling was that the IOC flags were to ext[234]-specific and shouldn't be exposed through statx this way). (15) Mask of features available on file (eg: ACLs, seclabel) [Brad Boyer, Michael Kerrisk]. (Deferred, probably to fsinfo. Finding out if there's an ACL or seclabal might require extra filesystem operations). (16) Femtosecond-resolution timestamps [Dave Chinner]. (A __reserved field has been left in the statx_timestamp struct for this - if there proves to be a need). (17) A set multiple attributes syscall to go with this. =============== NEW SYSTEM CALL =============== The new system call is: int ret = statx(int dfd, const char *filename, unsigned int flags, unsigned int mask, struct statx *buffer); The dfd, filename and flags parameters indicate the file to query, in a similar way to fstatat(). There is no equivalent of lstat() as that can be emulated with statx() by passing AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW in flags. There is also no equivalent of fstat() as that can be emulated by passing a NULL filename to statx() with the fd of interest in dfd. Whether or not statx() synchronises the attributes with the backing store can be controlled by OR'ing a value into the flags argument (this typically only affects network filesystems): (1) AT_STATX_SYNC_AS_STAT tells statx() to behave as stat() does in this respect. (2) AT_STATX_FORCE_SYNC will require a network filesystem to synchronise its attributes with the server - which might require data writeback to occur to get the timestamps correct. (3) AT_STATX_DONT_SYNC will suppress synchronisation with the server in a network filesystem. The resulting values should be considered approximate. mask is a bitmask indicating the fields in struct statx that are of interest to the caller. The user should set this to STATX_BASIC_STATS to get the basic set returned by stat(). It should be noted that asking for more information may entail extra I/O operations. buffer points to the destination for the data. This must be 256 bytes in size. ====================== MAIN ATTRIBUTES RECORD ====================== The following structures are defined in which to return the main attribute set: struct statx_timestamp { __s64 tv_sec; __s32 tv_nsec; __s32 __reserved; }; struct statx { __u32 stx_mask; __u32 stx_blksize; __u64 stx_attributes; __u32 stx_nlink; __u32 stx_uid; __u32 stx_gid; __u16 stx_mode; __u16 __spare0[1]; __u64 stx_ino; __u64 stx_size; __u64 stx_blocks; __u64 __spare1[1]; struct statx_timestamp stx_atime; struct statx_timestamp stx_btime; struct statx_timestamp stx_ctime; struct statx_timestamp stx_mtime; __u32 stx_rdev_major; __u32 stx_rdev_minor; __u32 stx_dev_major; __u32 stx_dev_minor; __u64 __spare2[14]; }; The defined bits in request_mask and stx_mask are: STATX_TYPE Want/got stx_mode & S_IFMT STATX_MODE Want/got stx_mode & ~S_IFMT STATX_NLINK Want/got stx_nlink STATX_UID Want/got stx_uid STATX_GID Want/got stx_gid STATX_ATIME Want/got stx_atime{,_ns} STATX_MTIME Want/got stx_mtime{,_ns} STATX_CTIME Want/got stx_ctime{,_ns} STATX_INO Want/got stx_ino STATX_SIZE Want/got stx_size STATX_BLOCKS Want/got stx_blocks STATX_BASIC_STATS [The stuff in the normal stat struct] STATX_BTIME Want/got stx_btime{,_ns} STATX_ALL [All currently available stuff] stx_btime is the file creation time, stx_mask is a bitmask indicating the data provided and __spares*[] are where as-yet undefined fields can be placed. Note that times will be negative if before 1970; in such a case, the nanosecond fields will also be negative if not zero. The bits defined in the stx_attributes field convey information about a file, how it is accessed, where it is and what it does. The following attributes map to FS_*_FL flags and are the same numerical value: STATX_ATTR_COMPRESSED File is compressed by the fs STATX_ATTR_IMMUTABLE File is marked immutable STATX_ATTR_APPEND File is append-only STATX_ATTR_NODUMP File is not to be dumped STATX_ATTR_ENCRYPTED File requires key to decrypt in fs Within the kernel, the supported flags are listed by: KSTAT_ATTR_FS_IOC_FLAGS [Are any other IOC flags of sufficient general interest to be exposed through this interface?] New flags include: STATX_ATTR_AUTOMOUNT Object is an automount trigger These are for the use of GUI tools that might want to mark files specially, depending on what they are. Fields in struct statx come in a number of classes: (0) stx_dev_*, stx_blksize. These are local system information and are always available. (1) stx_mode, stx_nlinks, stx_uid, stx_gid, stx_[amc]time, stx_ino, stx_size, stx_blocks. These will be returned whether the caller asks for them or not. The corresponding bits in stx_mask will be set to indicate whether they actually have valid values. If the caller didn't ask for them, then they may be approximated. For example, NFS won't waste any time updating them from the server, unless as a byproduct of updating something requested. If the values don't actually exist for the underlying object (such as UID or GID on a DOS file), then the bit won't be set in the stx_mask, even if the caller asked for the value. In such a case, the returned value will be a fabrication. Note that there are instances where the type might not be valid, for instance Windows reparse points. (2) stx_rdev_*. This will be set only if stx_mode indicates we're looking at a blockdev or a chardev, otherwise will be 0. (3) stx_btime. Similar to (1), except this will be set to 0 if it doesn't exist. ======= TESTING ======= The following test program can be used to test the statx system call: samples/statx/test-statx.c Just compile and run, passing it paths to the files you want to examine. The result of this behaviour is that the ->release() function is called on every close and that results in XFS truncating speculative preallocation beyond the EOF. This has an adverse effect on file layout when multiple files are being written at the same time - they interleave their extents and can result in severe fragmentation. To avoid this problem, keep track of ->release calls made on a dirty inode. For most cases, an inode is only going to be opened once for writing and then closed again during it's lifetime in cache. Hence if there are multiple ->release calls when the inode is dirty, there is a good chance that the inode is being accessed by the NFS server. Hence set a flag the first time ->release is called while there are delalloc blocks still outstanding on the inode. If this flag is set when ->release is next called, then do no truncate away the speculative preallocation - leave it there so that subsequent writes do not need to reallocate the delalloc space. This will prevent interleaving of extents of different inodes written concurrently to the same AG. If we get this wrong, it is not a big deal as we truncate speculative allocation beyond EOF anyway in xfs_inactive() when the inode is thrown out of the cache. The bmbt buffers are marked as ordered so they do not have to be physically logged in the transaction. This use of ordered buffers is not safe as bmbt buffers may have been previously physically logged. The bmbt owner change algorithm needs to be updated to physically log buffers that are already dirty when/if they are encountered. This means that an extent swap will eventually require multiple rolling transactions to handle large btrees. In addition, all inode related changes must be logged before the bmbt owner change scan begins and can roll the transaction for the first time to preserve fs consistency via log recovery. In preparation for such fixes to the bmbt owner change algorithm, refactor the bmbt scan out of the extent fork swap code to the last operation before the transaction is committed. Update xfs_swap_extent_forks() to only set the inode log flags when an owner change scan is necessary. Update xfs_swap_extents() to trigger the owner change based on the inode log flags. Note that since the owner change now occurs after the extent fork swap, the inode btrees must be fixed up with the inode number of the current inode (similar to log recovery). When the in-core inode fork on the temporary inode used by xfs_fsr was originally set up during the extent swap, we mistakenly looked at di_nextents to determine whether all extents fit inline, but this misses extents generated by speculative preallocation; we should be using if_bytes instead. This mistake corrupts the in-memory inode, and code in xfs_iext_remove_inline eventually gets bad inputs, causing it to memmove and memset incorrect ranges; this became apparent because the two values in ifp->if_u2.if_inline_ext[1] contained what should have been in d_ops and i_itemp; they were memmoved due to incorrect array indexing and then the original locations were zeroed with memset, again due to an array overrun. Fix this by properly using i_df.if_bytes to determine the number of extents, not di_nextents. Thanks to dchinner for looking at this with me and spotting the root cause. If the extent free fails (e.g., due to unrelated fs corruption), the transaction is cancelled, though it might not be dirtied at the time. If this is the case, the EFD does not abort and thus does not release the EFI. This can lead to hangs as the EFI pins the AIL. Update xlog_recover_process_efi() to log the EFD in the transaction before xfs_free_extent() errors are handled to ensure the transaction is dirty, aborts the EFD and releases the EFI on error. Since this is a requirement for EFD processing (and consistent with xfs_bmap_finish()), update the EFD logging helper to do the extent free and unconditionally log the EFD. This encodes the required EFD logging behavior into the helper and reduces the likelihood of errors down the road. Because the checks in libxfs are more stringent than the ones in the ioctl, it's possible for a live system to set inode flags that immediately result in corruption warnings. Specifically, it's possible to set an extent size hint on an rtinherit directory without checking if the hint is aligned to the realtime extent size, which makes no sense since that combination is used only to seed new realtime files. Just return the EAGAIN error and handle that error in the callers. This means we can remove the not_init parameter from xfs_bmap_select_minlen(), too, because the use of not_init there is pessimistic. If we can't read the agf, it won't increase blen. The only time we actually care whether we checked all the AGFs for contiguous free space is when the best length is less than the minimum allocation length. If not_init is set, then we ignore blen and set the minimum alloc length to the absolute minimum, not the best length we know already is present. However, if blen is less than the minimum we're going to ignore it anyway, regardless of whether we scanned all the AGFs or not. Hence not_init can go away, because we only use if blen is good from the scanned AGs otherwise we ignore it altogether and use minlen. Files with huge data forks (and in the future, the realtime rmap btree) will require the ability to support many more levels than a per-AG btree cursor, which means that we're going to create per-btree type cursor caches to conserve memory for the more common case. Note that a subsequent patch actually introduces dynamic cursor heights. This one merely rearranges the structure to prepare for that. Signed-off-by: Darrick J.
