It's 19the underlying XML parser for the open source Mozilla project, Perl's 20
XML::Parser
, Python's
xml.parsers.expat
, and 21other open-source XML parsers.
22 23
This library is the creation of James Clark, who's also given us 24groff (an nroff look-alike), Jade (an implemention of ISO's DSSSL 25stylesheet language for SGML), XP (a Java XML parser package), XT (a 26Java XSL engine). James was also the technical lead on the XML 27Working Group at W3C that produced the XML specification.
28 29
This is free software, licensed under the <a 30href="../COPYING">MIT/X Consortium license. You register callback (or 137handler) functions with the parser and then start feeding it the 138document. As the parser recognizes parts of the document, it will 139call the appropriate handler for that part (if you've registered one.) 140The document is fed to the parser in pieces, so you can start parsing 141before you have all the document. This also allows you to parse really 142huge documents that won't fit into memory.
143 144
Expat can be intimidating due to the many kinds of handlers and 145options you can set. But you only need to learn four functions in 146order to do 90% of what you'll want to do with it:
147 148
149 150

<a href= "#XML_ParserCreate" 151 >XML_ParserCreate

152
Create a new parser object.
153 154

<a href= "#XML_SetElementHandler" 155 >XML_SetElementHandler

156
Set handlers for start and end tags.
157 158

<a href= "#XML_SetCharacterDataHandler" 159 >XML_SetCharacterDataHandler

160
Set handler for text.
161 162

<a href= "#XML_Parse" 163 >XML_Parse

164
Pass a buffer full of document to the parser
165
166 167
These functions and others are described in the <a 168href="#reference">reference part of this document. The reference 169section also describes in detail the parameters passed to the 170different types of handlers.
171 172
Let's look at a very simple example program that only uses 3 of the 173above functions (it doesn't need to set a character handler.) The 174program outline.c prints an 175element outline, indenting child elements to distinguish them from the 176parent element that contains them. The start handler does all the 177work. It prints two indenting spaces for every level of ancestor 178elements, then it prints the element and attribute 179information. Finally it increments the global
Depth
180variable.
181 182
183int Depth; 184 185void 186start(void *data, const char *el, const char **attr) { 187 int i; 188 189 for (i = 0; i < Depth; i++) 190 printf(" "); 191 192 printf("%s", el); 193 194 for (i = 0; attr[i]; i += 2) { 195 printf(" %s='%s'", attr[i], attr[i + 1]); 196 } 197 198 printf("\n"); 199 Depth++; 200} /* End of start handler */ 201
202 203
The end tag simply does the bookkeeping work of decrementing 204
Depth
.
205
206void 207end(void *data, const char *el) { 208 Depth--; 209} /* End of end handler */ 210
211 212
After creating the parser, the main program just has the job of 213shoveling the document to the parser so that it can do its work.
214 215
216
Building and Installing Expat
217 218
The Expat distribution comes as a compressed (with GNU gzip) tar 219file. You may download the latest version from <a href= 220"http://sourceforge.net/projects/expat/" >Source Forge. After 221unpacking this, cd into the directory. Then follow either the Win32 222directions or Unix directions below.
223 224
Building under Win32
225 226
If you're using the GNU compiler under cygwin, follow the Unix 227directions in the next section. Otherwise if you have Microsoft's 228Developer Studio installed, then from Windows Explorer double-click on 229"expat.dsp" in the lib directory and build and install in the usual 230manner.
231 232
Alternatively, you may download the Win32 binary package that 233contains the "expat.h" include file and a pre-built DLL.
234 235
Building under Unix (or GNU)
236 237
First you'll need to run the configure shell script in order to 238configure the Makefiles and headers for your system.
239 240
If you're happy with all the defaults that configure picks for you, 241and you have permission on your system to install into /usr/local, you 242can install Expat with this sequence of commands:
243 244
245 ./configure 246 make 247 make install 248
249 250
There are some options that you can provide to this script, but the 251only one we'll mention here is the
--prefix
option. You 252can find out all the options available by running configure with just 253the
--help
option.
254 255
By default, the configure script sets things up so that the library 256gets installed in
/usr/local/lib
and the associated 257header file in
/usr/local/include
. But if you were to 258give the option,
--prefix=/home/me/mystuff
, then the 259library and header would get installed in 260
/home/me/mystuff/lib
and 261
/home/me/mystuff/include
respectively.
262 263
264
Using Expat
265 266
Compiling and Linking Against Expat
267 268
Unless you installed Expat in a location not expected by your 269compiler and linker, all you have to do to use Expat in your programs 270is to include the Expat header (
#include <expat.h>
) 271in your files that make calls to it and to tell the linker that it 272needs to link against the Expat library. On Unix systems, this would 273usually be done with the
-lexpat
argument. Otherwise, 274you'll need to tell the compiler where to look for the Expat header 275and the linker where to find the Expat library. You may also need to 276take steps to tell the operating system where to find this libary at 277run time.
278 279
On a Unix-based system, here's what a Makefile might look like when 280Expat is installed in a standard location:
281 282
283CC=cc 284LDFLAGS= 285LIBS= -lexpat 286xmlapp: xmlapp.o 287 $(CC) $(LDFLAGS) -o xmlapp xmlapp.o $(LIBS) 288
289 290
If you installed Expat in, say,
/home/me/mystuff
, then 291the Makefile would look like this:
292 293
294CC=cc 295CFLAGS= -I/home/me/mystuff/include 296LDFLAGS= 297LIBS= -L/home/me/mystuff/lib -lexpat 298xmlapp: xmlapp.o 299 $(CC) $(LDFLAGS) -o xmlapp xmlapp.o $(LIBS) 300
301 302
You'd also have to set the environment variable 303
LD_LIBRARY_PATH
to
/home/me/mystuff/lib
(or 304to
${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}:/home/me/mystuff/lib
if 305LD_LIBRARY_PATH already has some directories in it) in order to run 306your application.
307 308
Expat Basics
309 310
As we saw in the example in the overview, the first step in parsing 311an XML document with Expat is to create a parser object. There are <a 312href="#creation">three functions in the Expat API for creating a 313parser object. However, only two of these (
<a href= 314"#XML_ParserCreate" >XML_ParserCreate
and
<a href= 315"#XML_ParserCreateNS" >XML_ParserCreateNS
) can be used for 316constructing a parser for a top-level document. The object returned 317by these functions is an opaque pointer (i.e. "expat.h" declares it as 318void *) to data with further internal structure. In order to free the 319memory associated with this object you must call
<a href= 320"#XML_ParserFree" >XML_ParserFree
. Note that if you have 321provided any user data that gets stored in the 322parser, then your application is responsible for freeing it prior to 323calling
XML_ParserFree
.
324 325
The objects returned by the parser creation functions are good for 326parsing only one XML document or external parsed entity. If your 327application needs to parse many XML documents, then it needs to create 328a parser object for each one. The best way to deal with this is to 329create a higher level object that contains all the default 330initialization you want for your parser objects.
331 332
Walking through a document hierarchy with a stream oriented parser 333will require a good stack mechanism in order to keep track of current 334context. For instance, to answer the simple question, "What element 335does this text belong to?" requires a stack, since the parser may have 336descended into other elements that are children of the current one and 337has encountered this text on the way out.
338 339
The things you're likely to want to keep on a stack are the 340currently opened element and it's attributes. You push this 341information onto the stack in the start handler and you pop it off in 342the end handler.
343 344
For some tasks, it is sufficient to just keep information on what 345the depth of the stack is (or would be if you had one.) The outline 346program shown above presents one example. Another such task would be 347skipping over a complete element. When you see the start tag for the 348element you want to skip, you set a skip flag and record the depth at 349which the element started. When the end tag handler encounters the 350same depth, the skipped element has ended and the flag may be 351cleared. If you follow the convention that the root element starts at 3521, then you can use the same variable for skip flag and skip 353depth.
354 355
356void 357init_info(Parseinfo *info) { 358 info->skip = 0; 359 info->depth = 1; 360 /* Other initializations here */ 361} /* End of init_info */ 362 363void 364rawstart(void *data, const char *el, const char **attr) { 365 Parseinfo *inf = (Parseinfo *) data; 366 367 if (! inf->skip) { 368 if (should_skip(inf, el, attr)) { 369 inf->skip = inf->depth; 370 } 371 else 372 start(inf, el, attr); /* This does rest of start handling */ 373 } 374 375 inf->depth++; 376} /* End of rawstart */ 377 378void 379rawend(void *data, const char *el) { 380 Parseinfo *inf = (Parseinfo *) data; 381 382 inf->depth--; 383 384 if (! inf->skip) 385 end(inf, el); /* This does rest of end handling */ 386 387 if (inf->skip == inf->depth) 388 inf->skip = 0; 389} /* End rawend */ 390
391 392
Notice in the above example the difference in how depth is 393manipulated in the start and end handlers. The end tag handler should 394be the mirror image of the start tag handler. This is necessary to 395properly model containment. Since, in the start tag handler, we 396incremented depth after the main body of start tag code, then 397in the end handler, we need to manipulate it before the main 398body. If we'd decided to increment it first thing in the start 399handler, then we'd have had to decrement it last thing in the end 400handler.
401 402
Communicating between handlers
403 404
In order to be able to pass information between different handlers 405without using globals, you'll need to define a data structure to hold 406the shared variables. You can then tell Expat (with the
<a href= 407"#XML_SetUserData" >XML_SetUserData
function) to pass a 408pointer to this structure to the handlers. This is typically the first 409argument received by most handlers.
410 411
XML Version
412 413
Expat is an XML 1.0 parser, and as such never complains based on 414the value of the
version
pseudo-attribute in the XML 415declaration, if present.
416 417
If an application needs to check the version number (to support 418alternate processing), it should use the
<a href= 419"#XML_SetXmlDeclHandler" >XML_SetXmlDeclHandler
function to 420set a handler that uses the information in the XML declaration to 421determine what to do. This example shows how to check that only a 422version number of
"1.0"
is accepted:
423 424
425static int wrong_version; 426static XML_Parser parser; 427 428static void 429xmldecl_handler(void *userData, 430 const XML_Char *version, 431 const XML_Char *encoding, 432 int standalone) 433{ 434 static const XML_Char Version_1_0[] = {'1', '.', '0', 0}; 435 436 int i; 437 438 for (i = 0; i < (sizeof(Version_1_0) / sizeof(Version_1_0[0])); ++i) { 439 if (version[i] != Version_1_0[i]) { 440 wrong_version = 1; 441 /* also clear all other handlers: */ 442 XML_SetCharacterDataHandler(parser, NULL); 443 ... 444 return; 445 } 446 } 447 ... 448} 449
450 451
Namespace Processing
452 453
When the parser is created using the
<a href= 454"#XML_ParserCreateNS" >XML_ParserCreateNS
, function, Expat 455performs namespace processing. Under namespace processing, Expat 456consumes
xmlns
and
xmlns:...
attributes, 457which declare namespaces for the scope of the element in which they 458occur. This means that your start handler will not see these 459attributes. Your application can still be informed of these 460declarations by setting namespace declaration handlers with <a href= 461"#XML_SetNamespaceDeclHandler" 462>
XML_SetNamespaceDeclHandler
.
463 464
Element type and attribute names that belong to a given namespace 465are passed to the appropriate handler in expanded form. By default 466this expanded form is a concatenation of the namespace URI, the 467separator character (which is the 2nd argument to
<a href= 468"#XML_ParserCreateNS" >XML_ParserCreateNS
), and the local 469name (i.e. the part after the colon). Names with undeclared prefixes 470are passed through to the handlers unchanged, with the prefix and 471colon still attached. Unprefixed attribute names are never expanded, 472and unprefixed element names are only expanded when they are in the 473scope of a default namespace.
474 475
However if
<a href= "XML_SetReturnNSTriplet" 476>XML_SetReturnNSTriplet
has been called with a non-zero 477
do_nst
parameter, then the expanded form for names with 478an explicit prefix is a concatenation of: URI, separator, local name, 479separator, prefix.
480 481
You can set handlers for the start of a namespace declaration and 482for the end of a scope of a declaration with the
<a href= 483"#XML_SetNamespaceDeclHandler" >XML_SetNamespaceDeclHandler
484function. The StartNamespaceDeclHandler is called prior to the start 485tag handler and the EndNamespaceDeclHandler is called before the 486corresponding end tag that ends the namespace's scope. The namespace 487start handler gets passed the prefix and URI for the namespace. For a 488default namespace declaration (xmlns='...'), the prefix will be null. 489The URI will be null for the case where the default namespace is being 490unset. The namespace end handler just gets the prefix for the closing 491scope.
492 493
These handlers are called for each declaration. So if, for 494instance, a start tag had three namespace declarations, then the 495StartNamespaceDeclHandler would be called three times before the start 496tag handler is called, once for each declaration.
497 498
Character Encodings
499 500
While XML is based on Unicode, and every XML processor is required 501to recognized UTF-8 and UTF-16 (1 and 2 byte encodings of Unicode), 502other encodings may be declared in XML documents or entities. For the 503main document, an XML declaration may contain an encoding 504declaration:
505
506 507
508 509
External parsed entities may begin with a text declaration, which 510looks like an XML declaration with just an encoding declaration:
511
512 513
514 515
With Expat, you may also specify an encoding at the time of 516creating a parser. This is useful when the encoding information may 517come from a source outside the document itself (like a higher level 518protocol.)
519 520
There are four built-in encodings 521in Expat:
522
523
UTF-8
524
UTF-16
525
ISO-8859-1
526
US-ASCII
527
528 529
Anything else discovered in an encoding declaration or in the 530protocol encoding specified in the parser constructor, triggers a call 531to the
UnknownEncodingHandler
. This handler gets passed 532the encoding name and a pointer to an
XML_Encoding
data 533structure. Your handler must fill in this structure and return 534
XML_STATUS_OK
if it knows how to deal with the 535encoding. Otherwise the handler should return 536
XML_STATUS_ERROR
. The handler also gets passed a pointer 537to an optional application data structure that you may indicate when 538you set the handler.
539 540
Expat places restrictions on character encodings that it can 541support by filling in the
XML_Encoding
structure. 542include file:
543
544
Every ASCII character that can appear in a well-formed XML document 545must be represented by a single byte, and that byte must correspond to 546it's ASCII encoding (except for the characters $@\^'{}~)
547
Characters must be encoded in 4 bytes or less.
548
All characters encoded must have Unicode scalar values less than or 549equal to 65535 (0xFFFF)This does not apply to the built-in support 550for UTF-16 and UTF-8
551
No character may be encoded by more that one distinct sequence of 552bytes
553
554 555

XML_Encoding
contains an array of integers that 556correspond to the 1st byte of an encoding sequence. If the value in 557the array for a byte is zero or positive, then the byte is a single 558byte encoding that encodes the Unicode scalar value contained in the 559array. A -1 in this array indicates a malformed byte. If the value is 560-2, -3, or -4, then the byte is the beginning of a 2, 3, or 4 byte 561sequence respectively. Multi-byte sequences are sent to the convert 562function pointed at in the
XML_Encoding
structure. This 563function should return the Unicode scalar value for the sequence or -1 564if the sequence is malformed.
565 566
One pitfall that novice Expat users are likely to fall into is that 567although Expat may accept input in various encodings, the strings that 568it passes to the handlers are always encoded in UTF-8 or UTF-16 569(depending on how Expat was compiled). Your application is responsible 570for any translation of these strings into other encodings.
571 572
Handling External Entity References
573 574
Expat does not read or parse external entities directly. Note that 575any external DTD is a special case of an external entity. If you've 576set no
ExternalEntityRefHandler
, then external entity 577references are silently ignored. Otherwise, it calls your handler with 578the information needed to read and parse the external entity.
579 580
Your handler isn't actually responsible for parsing the entity, but 581it is responsible for creating a subsidiary parser with
<a href= 582"#XML_ExternalEntityParserCreate" 583>XML_ExternalEntityParserCreate
that will do the job. This 584returns an instance of
XML_Parser
that has handlers and 585other data structures initialized from the parent parser. You may then 586use
XML_Parse
or
<a 587href= "#XML_ParseBuffer">XML_ParseBuffer
calls against this 588parser. Since external entities my refer to other external entities, 589your handler should be prepared to be called recursively.
590 591
Parsing DTDs
592 593
In order to parse parameter entities, before starting the parse, 594you must call
<a href= "#XML_SetParamEntityParsing" 595>XML_SetParamEntityParsing
with one of the following 596arguments:
597
598

XML_PARAM_ENTITY_PARSING_NEVER

599
Don't parse parameter entities or the external subset
600

XML_PARAM_ENTITY_PARSING_UNLESS_STANDALONE

601
Parse parameter entites and the external subset unless 602
standalone
was set to "yes" in the XML declaration.
603

XML_PARAM_ENTITY_PARSING_ALWAYS

604
Always parse parameter entities and the external subset
605
606 607
In order to read an external DTD, you also have to set an external 608entity reference handler as described above.
609 610
611 612 613
Expat Reference
614 615
Parser Creation
616 617
618XML_Parser 619XML_ParserCreate(const XML_Char *encoding); 620
621
622Construct a new parser.
