1 2CrackLib is a library containing a C function (well, lots of functions 3really, but you only need to use one of them) which may be used in a 4"passwd"-like program. 5 6The idea is simple: try to prevent users from choosing passwords that 7could be guessed by "Crack" by filtering them out, at source. 8 9CrackLib is an offshoot of the the version 5 "Crack" software, and 10contains a considerable number of ideas nicked from the new software. 11At the time of writing, Crack 5 is incomplete (still awaiting purchase 12of my home box) - but I though I could share this with you. 13 14NOTE THIS WELL: CrackLib is NOT a replacement "passwd" program. 15CrackLib is a LIBRARY. CrackLib is what trendy marketdroid types would 16probably call an "enabler". 17 18The idea is that you wire it into your _own_ "passwd" program (if you 19have source); alternatively, you wire it into something like "shadow" 20from off of the net. You can use it almost _everywhere_. 21 22FOR YOUR INFORMATION: 23 24CrackLib has been tested mostly on Suns. If you can point me at ways 25round portability problems (eg: static linking, other libraries, etc) 26I'd be most grateful. 27 28A reference copy of CrackLib (+ large dictionary) can be found via 29anonymous FTP at: 30 31 black.ox.ac.uk:~ftp/src/security/cracklib25.tar.Z 32 33 34 - alec 35
