1-*- text -*- 2 3Autoconf 4 5Autoconf is an extensible package of M4 macros that produce shell 6scripts to automatically configure software source code packages. 7These scripts can adapt the packages to many kinds of UNIX-like 8systems without manual user intervention. Autoconf creates a 9configuration script for a package from a template file that lists the 10operating system features that the package can use, in the form of M4 11macro calls. 12 13Producing configuration scripts using Autoconf requires GNU M4 and 14Perl. You should install GNU M4 (version 1.4.7 or later) and Perl 15(5.005_03 or later) before configuring Autoconf, so that Autoconf's 16configure script can find them. The configuration scripts produced by 17Autoconf are self-contained, so their users do not need to have 18Autoconf (or GNU M4, Perl, etc.). 19 20You can get GNU M4 1.4.7 here: 21 22ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/m4/m4-1.4.7.tar.gz 23 24The file INSTALL should be distributed with packages that use 25Autoconf-generated configure scripts and Makefiles that conform to the 26GNU coding standards. The package's README can just give an overview 27of the package, where to report bugs, and a pointer to INSTALL for 28instructions on compilation and installation. This removes the need 29to maintain many similar sets of installation instructions. 30 31Be sure to read BUGS (especially if this version is not an official 32release) and INSTALL. 33 34Mail suggestions to autoconf@gnu.org, report bugs to 35bug-autoconf@gnu.org, and submit patches to autoconf-patches@gnu.org. 36Always include the Autoconf version number, which you can get by 37running `autoconf --version'. Archives of bug-autoconf@gnu.org can be 38found in <http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-autoconf/>, and 39similarly for the other mailing lists. 40 41----- 42 43Copyright (C) 1992, 1993, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 442005, 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc. 45 46This file is part of GNU Autoconf. 47 48GNU Autoconf is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify 49it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by 50the Free Software Foundation; either version 2, or (at your option) 51any later version. 52 53GNU Autoconf is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, 54but WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY; without even the implied warranty of 55MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
