refactored things, the variable name reuse mypy hated is gone.

Note: mypy complains we don't annotate the types the unused args in our
signal handler. That's silly.
But to make it happy, I've copy-pasted an appropriate annotation from

The same dependency needs to be propagated here to make it work correctly
with CONFIG_THERMAL=m and SCSI_CXGB4_ISCSI=y. That change by itself causes
another problem with a circular dependency, as we use 'select NETDEVICES'.
This is something we really should not do anyway, as a driver symbol should
never select another major subsystem, so let's turn that into a 'depends
on'. I don't see any downsides of that, as NETDEVICES is only disabled in
rather obscure cases that are not relevant to the users of cxgb4i.

arch/powerpc/platforms/ps3/repository.c:106:2: error: 'strncpy'
output truncated before terminating nul copying 8 bytes from a
string of the same length [-Werror=stringop-truncation]
strncpy((char *)&n, text, 8);

Fix it by using memcpy(). To make that safe we need to ensure the
destination is pre-zeroed. Use kzalloc() in the nvram code and
initialise the u64 to zero in the ps3 code.

The compiler might optimize a call/ret combination by making it a jmp.
However the thread-stack does not presently cater for that, so that such
control flow is not visible in the call graph. Make it visible by
recording on the stack a branch to the start of a different symbol.
Note, that means when a ret pops the stack, all jmps must be popped off
first.

Emulates the cmpxchg_local by disabling interrupts around variable modification.
This is not reentrant wrt NMIs and MCEs. It is only protected against normal
interrupts, but this is enough for architectures without such interrupt sources
or if used in a context where the data is not shared with such handlers.

It can be used as a fallback for architectures lacking a real cmpxchg
instruction.

For architectures that have a real cmpxchg but does not have NMIs or MCE,
testing which of the generic vs architecture specific cmpxchg is the fastest
should be done.

asm-generic/cmpxchg.h defines a cmpxchg that uses cmpxchg_local. It is meant to
be used as a cmpxchg fallback for architectures that do not support SMP.

* Patch series comments

Using cmpxchg_local shows a performance improvements of the fast path goes from
a 66% speedup on a Pentium 4 to a 14% speedup on AMD64.
