KVM: selftests: randomize which pages are written vs read Randomize which pages are written vs read using the random number generator. Change the variable wr_fract and associated function calls to write_percent that now operates as a percentage from 0 to 100 where X means each page has an X% chance of being written. Change the -f argument to -w to reflect the new variable semantics. Keep the same default of 100% writes. Population always uses 100% writes to ensure all memory is actually populated and not just mapped to the zero page. The prevents expensive copy-on-write faults from occurring during the dirty memory iterations below, which would pollute the performance results. KVM: selftests: Allowing running dirty_log_perf_test on specific CPUs Add a command line option, -c, to pin vCPUs to physical CPUs (pCPUs), i.e. to force vCPUs to run on specific pCPUs. Requirement to implement this feature came in discussion on the patch "Make page tables for eager page splitting NUMA aware" https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/YuhPT2drgqL+osLl@google.com/ This feature is useful as it provides a way to analyze performance based on the vCPUs and dirty log worker locations, like on the different NUMA nodes or on the same NUMA nodes. To keep things simple, implementation is intentionally very limited, either all of the vCPUs will be pinned followed by an optional main thread or nothing will be pinned. KVM: selftests: Add an option to run vCPUs while disabling dirty logging Add a command line option to dirty_log_perf_test to run vCPUs for the entire duration of disabling dirty logging. By default, the test stops running runs vCPUs before disabling dirty logging, which is faster but less interesting as it doesn't stress KVM's handling of contention between page faults and the zapping of collapsible SPTEs. Enabling the flag also lets the user verify that KVM is indeed rebuilding zapped SPTEs as huge pages by checking KVM's pages_{1g,2m,4k} stats. Without vCPUs to fault in the zapped SPTEs, the stats will show that KVM is zapping pages, but they never show whether or not KVM actually allows huge pages to be recreated. Note! Enabling the flag can _significantly_ increase runtime, especially if the thread that's disabling dirty logging doesn't have a dedicated pCPU, e.g. if all pCPUs are used to run vCPUs. selftests: KVM: Don't leak GIC FD across dirty log test iterations dirty_log_perf_test instantiates a VGICv3 for the guest (if supported by hardware) to reduce the overhead of guest exits. However, the test does not actually close the GIC fd when cleaning up the VM between test iterations, meaning that the VM is never actually destroyed in the kernel. While this is generally a bad idea, the bug was detected from the kernel spewing about duplicate debugfs entries as subsequent VMs happen to reuse the same FD even though the debugfs directory is still present. Abstract away the notion of setup/cleanup of the GIC FD from the test by creating arch-specific helpers for test setup/cleanup. Close the GIC FD on VM cleanup and do nothing for the other architectures. KVM: selftests: Move vcpu_args_set into perf_test_util perf_test_util is used to set up KVM selftests where vCPUs touch a region of memory. The guest code is implemented in perf_test_util.c (not the calling selftests). The guest code requires a 1 parameter, the vcpuid, which has to be set by calling vcpu_args_set(vm, vcpu_id, 1, vcpu_id). Today all of the selftests that use perf_test_util are making this call. Instead, perf_test_util should just do it. This will save some code but more importantly prevents mistakes since totally non-obvious that this needs to be called and failing to do so results in vCPUs not accessing the right regions of memory. KVM: selftests: Add option to overlap vCPU memory access Add an option to overlap the ranges of memory each vCPU accesses instead of partitioning them. This option will increase the probability of multiple vCPUs faulting on the same page at the same time, and causing interesting races, if there are bugs in the page fault handler or elsewhere in the kernel. KVM: selftests: Avoid flooding debug log while populating memory Peter Xu pointed out that a log message printed while waiting for the memory population phase of the dirty_log_perf_test will flood the debug logs as there is no delay after printing the message. KVM: selftests: Introduce the dirty log perf test The dirty log perf test will time verious dirty logging operations (enabling dirty logging, dirtying memory, getting the dirty log, clearing the dirty log, and disabling dirty logging) in order to quantify dirty logging performance. This test can be used to inform future performance improvements to KVM's dirty logging infrastructure. This series was tested by running the following invocations on an Intel Skylake machine: dirty_log_perf_test -b 20m -i 100 -v 64 dirty_log_perf_test -b 20g -i 5 -v 4 dirty_log_perf_test -b 4g -i 5 -v 32 demand_paging_test -b 20m -v 64 demand_paging_test -b 20g -v 4 demand_paging_test -b 4g -v 32 All behaved as expected.
