perf tools: Try chroot'ed filename when opening dso/symbol Currently it doesn't handle tasks in chroot properly. As filenames in MMAP records base on their root directory, it's different than what perf tool can see from outside. Add filename_with_chroot() helper to deal with those cases. The function returns a new filename only if it's in a different root directory. Since it needs to access /proc for the process, it only works until the task exits. With this change, I can see symbols in my program like below. # perf record -o- chroot myroot myprog 3 | perf report -i- ... # # Overhead Command Shared Object Symbol # ........ ....... ................. ............................. # 99.83% myprog myprog [.] loop 0.04% chroot [kernel.kallsyms] [k] fxregs_fixup 0.04% chroot [kernel.kallsyms] [k] rsm_load_seg_32 ... perf tools: Support CAP_PERFMON capability Extend error messages to mention CAP_PERFMON capability as an option to substitute CAP_SYS_ADMIN capability for secure system performance monitoring and observability operations. Make perf_event_paranoid_check() and __cmd_ftrace() to be aware of CAP_PERFMON capability. CAP_PERFMON implements the principle of least privilege for performance monitoring and observability operations (POSIX IEEE 1003.1e 2.2.2.39 principle of least privilege: A security design principle that states that a process or program be granted only those privileges (e.g., capabilities) necessary to accomplish its legitimate function, and only for the time that such privileges are actually required) For backward compatibility reasons access to perf_events subsystem remains open for CAP_SYS_ADMIN privileged processes but CAP_SYS_ADMIN usage for secure perf_events monitoring is discouraged with respect to CAP_PERFMON capability. License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. perf tools: Provide mutex wrappers for pthreads rwlocks Andi reported a performance drop in single threaded perf tools such as 'perf script' due to the growing number of locks being put in place to allow for multithreaded tools, so wrap the POSIX threads rwlock routines with the names used for such kinds of locks in the Linux kernel and then allow for tools to ask for those locks to be used or not. I.e. a tool may have a multithreaded phase and then switch to single threaded, like the upcoming patches for the synthesizing of PERF_RECORD_{FORK,MMAP,etc} for pre-existing processes to then switch to single threaded mode in 'perf top'. The init routines will not be conditional, this way starting as single threaded to then move to multi threaded mode should be possible. perf tools: Fix kernel version error in ubuntu On ubuntu the internal kernel version code is different from what can be retrived from uname: $ uname -r 4.4.0-47-generic $ cat /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build/include/generated/uapi/linux/version.h #define LINUX_VERSION_CODE 263192 #define KERNEL_VERSION(a,b,c) (((a) << 16) + ((b) << 8) + (c)) $ cat /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build/include/generated/utsrelease.h #define UTS_RELEASE "4.4.0-47-generic" #define UTS_UBUNTU_RELEASE_ABI 47 $ cat /proc/version_signature Ubuntu 4.4.0-47.68-generic 4.4.24 The macro LINUX_VERSION_CODE is set to 4.4.24 (263192 == 0x40418), but `uname -r` reports 4.4.0. This mismatch causes LINUX_VERSION_CODE macro passed to BPF script become an incorrect value, results in magic failure in BPF loading: $ sudo ./buildperf/perf record -e ./tools/perf/tests/bpf-script-example.c ls event syntax error: './tools/perf/tests/bpf-script-example.c' \___ Failed to load program for unknown reason According to Ubuntu document (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/FAQ), the correct kernel version can be retrived through /proc/version_signature, which is ubuntu specific. This patch checks the existance of /proc/version_signature, and returns version number through parsing this file instead of uname. Version string is untouched (value returns from uname) because `uname -r` is required to be consistence with path of kbuild directory in /lib/module. Committer notes: Fixed the max_lat_at bug introduced by Namhyung's original patch, as pointed out by Joonwoo, and made it a function following the scnprintf() model, i.e. returning the number of bytes formatted, and receiving as the first parameter the object from where the data to the formatting is obtained, renaming it from: char *timestamp_in_usec(char *bf, size_t size, u64 timestamp) to int timestamp__scnprintf_usec(u64 timestamp, char *bf, size_t size) Reported-by: Joonwoo Park <joonwoop@codeaurora.org> Signed-off-by: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Cc: David Ahern <dsahern@gmail.com> Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <a.p.zijlstra@chello.nl> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20161024020246.14928-3-namhyung@kernel.org Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

perf tools: Avoid possible race condition in copyfile() Use unique temporary files when copying to buildid dir to prevent races in case multiple instances are trying to copy same file. This is done by - creating template in form <path>/.<filename>.XXXXXX where the suffix is used by mkstemp() to create unique file - change file mode - copy content - if successful link temp file to target file - unlink temp file At this point the only file left at target path should be the desired one either created by us or other instance if we raced. This should also prevent not yet fully copied files to be visible to to other perf instances that could try to parse them. On top of that slow_copyfile no longer needs to deal with file mode when creating file since temporary file is already created and mode is set. Succesfully tested by myself by running perf record, archive and reading the data on other system and by running perf buildid-cache on perf binary itself. I also did revert fix from 0635b0f that to exposes previously fixed race with EEXIST and recreator test passed sucessfully. perf callchain: Move callchain_param to util object in to fix python test In following commit we changed the location of callchains data: 72a128aa083a7f4cc4f800718aaae05d9c698e26 perf tools: Move callchain config from record_opts to callchain_param Now all callchains stuff stays in callchain_param struct, which adds its dependency for evsel.c object and breaks python perf.so usage (unresolved callchain_param). Moving callchain_param into callchain.c and adding it into python-ext-sources unleash just another dependency hell, so I ended up adding callchain_param into util.c for now. perf tools: Convert to BACKTRACE_SUPPORT For building perf without stack backtrace debug, we can set NO_BACKTRACE=1 as a argument of make. It then defines NO_BACKTRACE macro for C code to do the proper handling. However it usually used in a negative semantics - e.g. #ifndef - so we saw double negations which can be misleading. Convert it to a positive form to make it more readable and add _SUPPORT suffix for consistency. perf tools: add NO_BACKTRACE for application self-debugging perf has support for self-debugging by defining dump_stack function. This function uses backtrace and backtrace_symbols functions defined as GNU extensions. In Android, bionic does not offer support for these functions and compilation will fail with the following error: target C: libperf <= tools/perf/util/util.c tools/perf/util/util.c:4:22: fatal error: execinfo.h: No such file or directory compilation terminated. Add a compile-time option (NO_BACKTRACE) to enable or disable self-debugging functionality in perf. This can also help in debugging since it offers the possibility to turn on/off printing the backtrace. perf report: Report number of events, not samples Number of samples is meaningless after we switched to auto-freq, so report the number of events, i.e. not the sum of the different periods, but the number PERF_RECORD_SAMPLE emitted by the kernel. While doing this I noticed that naming "count" to the sum of all the event periods can be confusing, so rename it to .period, just like in struct sample.data, so that we become more consistent. This helps with the next step, that was to record in struct hist_entry the number of sample events for each instance, we need that because we use it to generate the number of events when applying filters to the tree of hist entries like it is being done in the TUI report browser. perf: Fix implicit declaration of getline in util.c getline() is considered as undeclared in util/util.c because it includes string.h, that in turn includes stdio.h, without having defined _GNU_SOURCE. But util.c also includes util.h that handles the _GNU_SOURCE and all the needed inclusions already. Let's include only util.h and sys/mman.h which is the only one header not handled by util.h This fixes the following build error: util/util.c: In function 'slow_copyfile': util/util.c:49: erreur: implicit declaration of function 'getline' util/util.c:49: erreur: nested extern declaration of 'getline' Signed-off-by: Frederic Weisbecker <fweisbec@gmail.com> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Cc: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org> LKML-Reference: <1263648075-3858-1-git-send-regression-fweisbec@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu>

perf record: Introduce a symtab cache Now a cache will be created in a ~/.debug debuginfo like hierarchy, so that at the end of a 'perf record' session all the binaries (with build-ids) involved get collected and indexed by their build-ids, so that perf report can find them. This is interesting when developing software where you want to do a 'perf diff' with the previous build and opens avenues for lots more interesting tools, like a 'perf diff --graph' that takes more than two binaries into account. Tunables for collecting just the symtabs can be added if one doesn't want to have the full binary, but having the full binary allows things like 'perf rerecord' or other tools that can re-run the tests by having access to the exact binary in some perf.data file, so it may well be interesting to keep the full binary there. Space consumption is minimised by trying to use hard links, a 'perf cache' tool to manage the space used, a la ccache is required to purge older entries. With this in place it will be possible also to introduce new commands, 'perf archive' and 'perf restore' (or some more suitable and future proof names) to create a cpio/tar file with the perf data and the files in the cache that _had_ perf hits of interest. There are more aspects to polish, like finding the right vmlinux file to cache, etc, but this is enough for a first step.
