tools: perf: Expose sample ID / stream ID to python scripts perf script exposes the evsel_name to python scripts as part of the data passed to the sample or tracepoint handler function, and it passes the id and stream_id to the throttled/unthrottled handler functions. This makes matching throttle events and samples difficult. To make this possible, this change exposes the sample id and stream_id values to the script. perf callchain: Use pthread keys for tls callchain_cursor Pthread keys are more portable than __thread and allow the association of a destructor with the key. Use the destructor to clean up TLS callchain cursors to aid understanding memory leaks. Committer notes: Had to fixup a series of unconverted places and also check for the return of get_tls_callchain_cursor() as it may fail and return NULL. In that unlikely case we now either print something to a file, if the caller was expecting to print a callchain, or return an error code to state that resolving the callchain isn't possible. In some cases this was made easier because thread__resolve_callchain() already can fail for other reasons, so this new one (cursor == NULL) can be added and the callers don't have to explicitely check for this new condition. Committer notes: thread->nsinfo wasn't wrapped as it is used together with nsinfo__zput(), where does a trick to set the field with a refcount being dropped to NULL, and that doesn't work well with using thread__nsinfo(thread), that loses the &thread->nsinfo pointer. perf build: Use libtraceevent from the system Remove the LIBTRACEEVENT_DYNAMIC and LIBTRACEFS_DYNAMIC make command line variables. If libtraceevent isn't installed or NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 is passed to the build, don't compile in libtraceevent and libtracefs support. This also disables CONFIG_TRACE that controls "perf trace". CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT is used to control enablement in Build/Makefiles, HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is used in C code. Without HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT tracepoints are disabled and as such the commands kmem, kwork, lock, sched and timechart are removed. The majority of commands continue to work including "perf test". Committer notes: Fixed up a tools/perf/util/Build reject and added: #include <traceevent/event-parse.h> to tools/perf/util/scripting-engines/trace-event-perl.c. Building with NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 uncovered some more build failures: - Make building of data-convert-bt.c to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y - perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += scripts/ - bpf_kwork.o needs also to be dependent on CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y - The python binding needed some fixups and util/trace-event.c can't be built and linked with the python binding shared object, so remove it in tools/perf/util/setup.py and exclude it from the list of dependencies in the python/perf.so Makefile.perf target. Building without libtraceevent-devel installed uncovered more build failures: - The python binding tools/perf/util/python.c was assuming that traceevent/parse-events.h was always available, which was the case when we defaulted to using the in-kernel tools/lib/traceevent/ files, now we need to enclose it under ifdef HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT, just like the other parts of it that deal with tracepoints. - We have to ifdef the rules in the Build files with CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y to build builtin-trace.c and tools/perf/trace/beauty/ as we only ifdef setting CONFIG_TRACE=y when setting NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 in the make command line, not when we don't detect libtraceevent-devel installed in the system. Simplification here to avoid these two ways of disabling builtin-trace.c and not having CONFIG_TRACE=y when libtraceevent-devel isn't installed is the clean way. From Athira: <quote> tools/perf/arch/powerpc/util/Build -perf-y += kvm-stat.o +perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += kvm-stat.o </quote> Then, ditto for arm64 and s390, detected by container cross build tests. - s/390 uses test__checkevent_tracepoint() that is now only available if HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is defined, enclose the callsite with ifder HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT. Also from Athira: <quote> With this change, I could successfully compile in these environment: - Without libtraceevent-devel installed - With libtraceevent-devel installed - With “make NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1” </quote> Then, finally rename CONFIG_TRACEEVENT to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT for consistency with other libraries detected in tools/perf/. perf cpumap: Give CPUs their own type A common problem is confusing CPU map indices with the CPU, by wrapping the CPU with a struct then this is avoided. This approach is similar to atomic_t. Committer notes: To make it build with BUILD_BPF_SKEL=1 these files needed the conversions to 'struct perf_cpu' usage: tools/perf/util/bpf_counter.c tools/perf/util/bpf_counter_cgroup.c tools/perf/util/bpf_ftrace.c Also perf_env__get_cpu() was removed back in "perf cpumap: Switch cpu_map__build_map to cpu function". perf script python: Allow reporting the [un]throttle PERF_RECORD_ meta event perf_events may sometimes throttle an event due to creating too many samples during a given timer tick. As of now, the perf tool will not report on throttling, which means this is a silent error. Implement a callback for the throttle and unthrottle events within the Python scripting engine, which can allow scripts to detect and report when events may have been lost due to throttling. The simplest script to report throttle events is: def throttle(*args): print("throttle" + repr(args)) def unthrottle(*args): print("unthrottle" + repr(args)) Signed-off-by: Stephen Brennan <stephen.s.brennan@oracle.com> Cc: Alexander Shishkin <alexander.shishkin@linux.intel.com> Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@redhat.com> Cc: Mark Rutland <mark.rutland@arm.com> Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Link: http://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20210901210815.133251-1-stephen.s.brennan@oracle.com Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

perf script python: Fix buffer size to report iregs in perf script Commit 48a1f565261d2ab1 ("perf script python: Add more PMU fields to event handler dict") added functionality to report fields like weight, iregs, uregs etc via perf report. That commit predefined buffer size to 512 bytes to print those fields. But in PowerPC, since we added extended regs support in: 068aeea3773a6f4c ("perf powerpc: Support exposing Performance Monitor Counter SPRs as part of extended regs") d735599a069f6936 ("powerpc/perf: Add extended regs support for power10 platform") Now iregs can carry more bytes of data and this predefined buffer size can result to data loss in perf script output. This patch resolves this issue by making the buffer size dynamic, based on the number of registers needed to print. It also changes the regs_map() return type from int to void, as it is not being used by the set_regs_in_dict(), its only caller. perf tools: Add hw_idx in struct branch_stack The low level index of raw branch records for the most recent branch can be recorded in a sample with PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_HW_INDEX branch_sample_type. Extend struct branch_stack to support it. However, if the PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_HW_INDEX is not applied, only nr and entries[] will be output by kernel. The pointer of entries[] could be wrong, since the output format is different with new struct branch_stack. Add a variable no_hw_idx in struct perf_sample to indicate whether the hw_idx is output. Add get_branch_entry() to return corresponding pointer of entries[0]. To make dummy branch sample consistent as new branch sample, add hw_idx in struct dummy_branch_stack for cs-etm and intel-pt. Apply the new struct branch_stack for synthetic events as well. Extend test case sample-parsing to support new struct branch_stack. Committer notes: Renamed get_branch_entries() to perf_sample__branch_entries() to have proper namespacing and pave the way for this to be moved to libperf, eventually. Add 'static' to that inline as it is in a header. Add 'hw_idx' to 'struct dummy_branch_stack' in cs-etm.c to fix the build on arm64. perf script python: Move dsoname code to a new function This patch creates a new function get_dsoname() and move the code which gets the dsoname string to this function. perf script python: Add addr into perf sample dict ARM CoreSight auxtrace uses 'sample->addr' to record the target address for branch instructions, so the data of 'sample->addr' is required for tracing data analysis. perf tools: Add Python 3 support Added Python 3 support while keeping Python 2.7 compatibility. Committer notes: This doesn't make it to auto detect python 3, one has to explicitely ask it to build with python 3 devel files, here are the instructions provided by Jaroslav: --- $ cp -a tools/perf tools/python3-perf $ make V=1 prefix=/usr -C tools/perf PYTHON=/usr/bin/python2 all $ make V=1 prefix=/usr -C tools/python3-perf PYTHON=/usr/bin/python3 all $ make V=1 prefix=/usr -C tools/python3-perf PYTHON=/usr/bin/python3 DESTDIR=%{buildroot} install-python_ext $ make V=1 prefix=/usr -C tools/perf PYTHON=/usr/bin/python2 DESTDIR=%{buildroot} install-python_ext --- We need to make this automatic, just like the existing tests for checking if the python2 devel files are in place, allowing the build with python3 if available, fallbacking to python2 and then just disabling it if none are available. So, using the PYTHON variable to build it using O= we get: Before this patch: $ rpm -q python3 python3-devel python3-3.6.4-7.fc27.x86_64 python3-devel-3.6.4-7.fc27.x86_64 $ rm -rf /tmp/build/perf/ ; mkdir -p /tmp/build/perf ; make O=/tmp/build/perf PYTHON=/usr/bin/python3 -C tools/perf install-bin make: Entering directory '/home/acme/git/linux/tools/perf' <SNIP> Makefile.config:670: Python 3 is not yet supported; please set Makefile.config:671: PYTHON and/or PYTHON_CONFIG appropriately. perf script python: Add script to profile and resolve physical mem type There could be different types of memory in the system. E.g normal System Memory, Persistent Memory. To understand how the workload maps to those memories, it's important to know the I/O statistics of them. Perf can collect physical addresses, but those are raw data. It still needs extra work to resolve the physical addresses. Provide a script to facilitate the physical addresses resolving and I/O statistics. Profile with MEM_INST_RETIRED.ALL_LOADS or MEM_UOPS_RETIRED.ALL_LOADS event if any of them is available. Look up the /proc/iomem and resolve the physical address. Provide memory type summary. Here is an example output: # perf script report mem-phys-addr Event: mem_inst_retired.all_loads:P Memory type count percentage ---------------------------------------- ----------- ----------- System RAM 74 53.2% Persistent Memory 55 39.6% N/A --- Changes since V2: - Apply the new license rules. - Add comments for globals Changes since V1: - Do not mix DLA and Load Latency. tools perf scripting python: clang doesn't have -spec, remove it Gcc has a -spec option to override what options to pass to cc, etc, and in some distros this is used, like in fedora, where we end up getting this passed to gcc that makes clang, that doesn't have this option to stop the build: CC /tmp/build/perf/util/scripting-engines/trace-event-python.o clang-4.0: error: argument unused during compilation: '-specs=/usr/lib/rpm/redhat/redhat-hardened-cc1' [-Werror,-Wunused-command-line-argument] So filter this out when the compiler used is clang, this way we can build the python scripting support in tools/perf/. perf script: Expose usage of the callchain db export via the python api This change allows python scripts to be able to utilize the recent changes to the db export api allowing the export of call_paths derived from sampled callchains. These call paths are also now associated with the samples from which they were derived. - This feature is enabled by setting "perf_db_export_callchains" to true - When enabled, samples that have callchain information will have the callchains exported via call_path_table - The call_path_id field is added to sample_table to enable association of samples with the corresponding callchain stored in the call paths table. A call_path_id of 0 will be exported if there is no corresponding callchain. - When "perf_db_export_callchains" and "perf_db_export_calls" are both set to True, the call path root data structure will be shared. This prevents duplicating of data and call path ids that would result from building two separate call path trees in memory. - The call_return_processor structure definition was relocated to the header file to make its contents visible to db-export.c. This enables the sharing of call path trees between the two features, as mentioned above. This change is visible to python scripts using the python db export api. The change is backwards compatible with scripts written against the previous API, assuming that the scripts model the sample_table function after the one in export-to-postgresql.py script by allowing for additional arguments to be added in the future. ie. using *x as the final argument of the sample_table function. perf tools: Refactor code to move call path handling out of thread-stack Move the call path handling code out of thread-stack.c and thread-stack.h to allow other components that are not part of thread-stack to create call paths. Summary: - Create call-path.c and call-path.h and add them to the build. - Move all call path related code out of thread-stack.c and thread-stack.h and into call-path.c and call-path.h. - A small subset of structures and functions are now visible through call-path.h, which is required for thread-stack.c to continue to compile. This change is a prerequisite for subsequent patches in this change set and by itself contains no user-visible changes. perf callchain: Start moving away from global per thread cursors The recent perf_evsel__fprintf_callchain() move to evsel.c added several new symbol requirements to the python binding, for instance: # perf test -v python 16: Try 'import perf' in python, checking link problems : --- start --- test child forked, pid 18030 Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> ImportError: /tmp/build/perf/python/perf.so: undefined symbol: callchain_cursor test child finished with -1 ---- end ---- Try 'import perf' in python, checking link problems: FAILED! # This would require linking against callchain.c to access to the global callchain_cursor variables. In order for userspace tools to parse this, it must be able to handle the __get_bitmask() call and be able to convert the data that's in the ring buffer into a nice bitmask format. The output is similar to what the kernel uses to print bitmasks, with a comma separator every 4 bytes (8 characters). This allows for cpumasks to also be saved efficiently. perf script python: Fix mem leak due to missing Py_DECREFs on dict entries We are using the Python scripting interface in perf to extract kernel events relevant for performance analysis of HPC codes. We noticed that the "perf script" call allocates a significant amount of memory (in the order of several 100 MiB) during it's run, e.g. 125 MiB for a 25 MiB input file: $> perf record -o perf.data -a -R -g fp \ -e power:cpu_frequency -e sched:sched_switch \ -e sched:sched_migrate_task -e sched:sched_process_exit \ -e sched:sched_process_fork -e sched:sched_process_exec \ -e cycles -m 4096 --freq 4000 $> /usr/bin/time perf script -i perf.data -s dummy_script.py 0.84user 0.13system 0:01.92elapsed 51%CPU (0avgtext+0avgdata 125532maxresident)k 73072inputs+0outputs (57major+33086minor)pagefaults 0swaps Upon further investigation using the valgrind massif tool, we noticed that Python objects that are created in trace-event-python.c via PyString_FromString*() (and their Integer and Long counterparts) are never free'd. The reason for this seem to be missing Py_DECREF calls on the objects that are returned by these functions and stored in the Python dictionaries. The Python dictionaries do not steal references (as opposed to Python tuples and lists) but instead add their own reference. Hence, the reference that is returned by these object creation functions is never released and the memory is leaked. (see [1,2]) The attached patch fixes this by wrapping all relevant calls to PyDict_SetItemString() and decrementing the reference counter immediately after the Python function call. This reduces the allocated memory to a reasonable amount: $> /usr/bin/time perf script -i perf.data -s dummy_script.py 0.73user 0.05system 0:00.79elapsed 99%CPU (0avgtext+0avgdata 49132maxresident)k 0inputs+0outputs (0major+14045minor)pagefaults 0swaps For comparison, with a 120 MiB input file the memory consumption reported by time drops from almost 600 MiB to 146 MiB. The patch has been tested using Linux 3.8.2 with Python 2.7.4 and Linux 3.11.6 with Python 2.7.5. Please let me know if you need any further information. perf tools: Use __maybe_used for unused variables perf defines both __used and __unused variables to use for marking unused variables. The variable __used is defined to __attribute__((__unused__)), which contradicts the kernel definition to __attribute__((__used__)) for new gcc versions. On Android, __used is also defined in system headers and this leads to warnings like: warning: '__used__' attribute ignored __unused is not defined in the kernel and is not a standard definition. If __unused is included everywhere instead of __used, this leads to conflicts with glibc headers, since glibc has a variables with this name in its headers. The best approach is to use __maybe_unused, the definition used in the kernel for __attribute__((unused)). In this way there is only one definition in perf sources (instead of 2 definitions that point to the same thing: __used and __unused) and it works on both Linux and Android. This patch simply replaces all instances of __used and __unused with __maybe_unused. perf script: Replace "struct thread" with "struct addr_location" as a parameter for "process_event()" Both perl and python script start processing events other than trace points, and it's useful to pass the resolved symbol and the dso info to the event handler in script for better analysis and statistics. Struct thread is already a member of struct addr_location, using addr_location will keep the thread info, while providing additional symbol and dso info if exist, so that the script itself doesn't need to bother to do the symbol resolving and dso searching work. perf script: Add general python handler to process non-tracepoint events This patch just follows Robert Richter's idea and the commit 37a058ea0 "perf script: Add generic perl handler to process events" to similarly add a python handler for general events other than tracepoints. For non-tracepoint events, this patch will try to find a function named "process_event" in the python script, and pass the event attribute, perf_sample, raw_data in format of raw string. And the python script can use "struct" module's unpack function to disasemble the needed info and process. perf evsel: Cache associated event_format We already lookup the associated event_format when reading the perf.data header, so that we can cache the tracepoint name in evsel->name, so do it a little further and save the event_format itself, so that we can avoid relookups in tools that need to access it. Change the tools to take the most obvious advantage, when they were using pevent_find_event directly. More work is needed for further removing the need of a pointer to pevent, such as when asking for event field values ("common_pid" and the other common fields and per event_format fields). This is something that was planned but only got actually done when Andrey Wagin needed to do this lookup at perf_tool->sample() time, when we don't have access to pevent (session->pevent) to use with pevent_find_event(). perf tools: Stop using a global trace events description list The pevent thing is per perf.data file, so I made it stop being static and become a perf_session member, so tools processing perf.data files use perf_session and _there_ we read the trace events description into session->pevent and then change everywhere to stop using that single global pevent variable and use the per session one. Note that it _doesn't_ fall backs to trace__event_id, as we're not interested at all in what is present in the /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events in the workstation doing the analysis, just in what is in the perf.data file. This patch also introduces perf_session__set_tracepoints_handlers that is the perf perf.data/session way to associate handlers to tracepoint events by resolving their IDs using the events descriptions stored in a perf.data file. Make 'perf sched' use it. perf: Have perf use the new libtraceevent.a library The event parsing code in perf was originally copied from trace-cmd but never was kept up-to-date with the changes that was done there. The trace-cmd libtraceevent.a code is much more mature than what is currently in perf. This updates the code to use wrappers to handle the calls to the new event parsing code. The new code requires a handle to be pass around, which removes the global event variables and allows more than one event structure to be read from different files (and different machines). But perf still has the old global events and the code throughout perf does not yet have a nice way to pass around a handle. A global 'pevent' has been made for perf and the old calls have been created as wrappers to the new event parsing code that uses the global pevent. With this change, perf can later incorporate the pevent handle into the perf structures and allow more than one file to be read and compared, that contains different events. perf session: Pass evsel in event_ops->sample() Resolving the sample->id to an evsel since the most advanced tools, report and annotate, and the others will too when they evolve to properly support multi-event perf.data files. Good also because it does an extra validation, checking that the ID is valid when present. When that is not the case, the overhead is just a branch + function call (perf_evlist__id2evsel). perf/scripts: Tuple was set from long in both branches in python_process_event() This is a fix to the signed/unsigned field handling in the Python scripting engine, based on a patch from Roel Kluin. Basically, Python wants to use a PyInt (which is internally a long) if it can i.e. if the value will fit into that type. If not, it stores it into a PyLong, which isn't actually a long, but an arbitrary-precision integer variable. The code below is similar to to what Python does internally, and it seems to work as expected on the x86 and x86_64 sytems I tested it on.
