perf jevents: Drop or simplify small integer values Prior to this patch '0' would be dropped as the config values default to 0. Some json values are hex and the string '0' wouldn't match '0x0' as zero. Add a more robust is_zero test to drop these event terms. When encoding numbers as hex, if the number is between 0 and 9 inclusive then don't add a 0x prefix. Update test expectations for these changes. On x86 this reduces the event/metric C string by 58,411 bytes. perf jevents: Use "default_core" for events with no Unit The JSON Unit field encodes the name of the PMU to match the events to. When no name is given it has meant the "cpu" core PMU except for tests. On ARM, Intel hybrid and s390 the core PMU is named differently which means that using "cpu" for this case causes the events not to get matched to the PMU. Introduce a new "default_core" string for this case and in the pmu__name_match force all core PMUs to match this name. perf jevents: Group events by PMU Prior to this change a cpuid would map to a list of events where the PMU would be encoded alongside the event information. This change breaks apart each group of events so that there is a group per PMU. A new table is added with the PMU's name and the list of events, the original table now holding an array of these per PMU tables. These changes are to make it easier to get per PMU information about events, rather than the current approach of scanning all events. perf parse-events: Avoid scanning PMUs before parsing The event parser needs to handle two special cases: 1) legacy events like L1-dcache-load-miss. These event names don't appear in JSON or sysfs, and lookup tables are used for the config value. 2) raw events where 'r0xead' is the same as 'read' unless the PMU has an event called 'read' in which case the event has priority. The previous parser to handle these cases would scan all PMUs for components of event names. These components would then be used to classify in the lexer whether the token should be part of a legacy event, a raw event or an event. The grammar would handle legacy event tokens or recombining the tokens back into a regular event name. The code wasn't PMU specific and had issues around events like AMD's branch-brs that would fail to parse as it expects brs to be a suffix on a legacy event style name: $ perf stat -e branch-brs true event syntax error: 'branch-brs' \___ parser error This change removes processing all PMUs by using the lexer in the form of a regular expression matcher. The lexer will return the token for the longest matched sequence of characters, and in the event of a tie the first. The legacy events are a fixed number of regular expressions, and by matching these before a name token its possible to generate an accurate legacy event token with everything else matching as a name. Because of the lexer change the handling of hyphens in the grammar can be removed as hyphens just become a part of the name. To handle raw events and terms the parser is changed to defer trying to evaluate whether something is a raw event until the PMU is known in the grammar. Once the PMU is known, the events of the PMU can be scanned for the 'read' style problem. A new term type is added for these raw terms, used to enable deferring the evaluation. While this change is large, it has stats of: 170 insertions(+), 436 deletions(-) the bulk of the change is deleting the old approach. It isn't possible to break apart the code added due to the dependencies on how the parts of the parsing work. perf jevents: Generate metrics and events as separate tables Turn a perf json event into an event, metric or both. This reduces the number of events needed to scan to find an event or metric. As events no longer need the relatively seldom used metric fields, 4 bytes is saved per event. This reduces the big C string's size by 335kb (14.8%) on x86. Note, for the test PMU architecture pme_test_soc_cpu is renamed pmu_events__test_soc_cpu for consistency with the event vs metric naming convention. perf pmu-events: Remove now unused event and metric variables Previous changes separated the uses of pmu_event and pmu_metric, however, both structures contained all the variables of event and metric. This change removes the event variables from metric and the metric variables from event. Note, this change removes the setting of evsel's metric_name/expr as these fields are no longer part of struct pmu_event. The metric remains but is no longer implicitly requested when the event is. This impacts a few Intel uncore events, however, as the ScaleUnit is shared by the event and the metric this utility is questionable. Also the MetricNames look broken (contain spaces) in some cases and when trying to use the functionality with '-e' the metrics fail but regular metrics with '-M' work. For example, on SkylakeX '-M' works: ``` $ perf stat -M LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE -a sleep 1 Performance counter stats for 'system wide': 0 UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART2 # 57896.0 Bytes LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE (49.84%) 7,174 UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART1 (49.85%) 0 UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART3 (50.16%) 63 UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART0 (50.15%) 1.004576381 seconds time elapsed ``` whilst the event '-e' version is broken even with --group/-g (fwiw, we should also remove -g [1]): ``` $ perf stat -g -e LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE -g -a sleep 1 Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART2 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART1 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART3 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART0 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART2 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART1 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART3 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART0 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART2 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART1 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART3 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART0 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART2 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART1 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART3 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART0 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART2 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART1 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART3 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART0 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART2 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART1 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART3 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Add UNC_IIO_DATA_REQ_OF_CPU.MEM_WRITE.PART0 event to groups to get metric expression for LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE Performance counter stats for 'system wide': 27,316 Bytes LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE 1.004505469 seconds time elapsed ``` The code also carries warnings where the user is supposed to select events for metrics [2] but given the lack of use of such a feature, let's clean the code and just remove. libbpf: Hashmap interface update to allow both long and void* keys/values An update for libbpf's hashmap interface from void* -> void* to a polymorphic one, allowing both long and void* keys and values. This simplifies many use cases in libbpf as hashmaps there are mostly integer to integer. Perf copies hashmap implementation from libbpf and has to be updated as well. Changes to libbpf, selftests/bpf and perf are packed as a single commit to avoid compilation issues with any future bisect. Polymorphic interface is acheived by hiding hashmap interface functions behind auxiliary macros that take care of necessary type casts, for example: #define hashmap_cast_ptr(p) \ ({ \ _Static_assert((p) == NULL || sizeof(*(p)) == sizeof(long),\ #p " pointee should be a long-sized integer or a pointer"); \ (long *)(p); \ }) bool hashmap_find(const struct hashmap *map, long key, long *value); #define hashmap__find(map, key, value) \ hashmap_find((map), (long)(key), hashmap_cast_ptr(value)) - hashmap__find macro casts key and value parameters to long and long* respectively - hashmap_cast_ptr ensures that value pointer points to a memory of appropriate size. This hack was suggested by Andrii Nakryiko in [1]. This is a follow up for [2]. perf test: Avoid sysfs state affecting fake events Icelake has a slots event, on my Skylakex I have CPU events in sysfs of topdown-slots-issued and topdown-total-slots. Legacy event parsing would try to use '-' to separate parts of an event and so perf_pmu__parse_init sets 'slots' to be a PMU_EVENT_SYMBOL_SUFFIX2. As such parsing the slots event for a fake PMU fails as a PMU_EVENT_SYMBOL_SUFFIX2 isn't made into the PE_PMU_EVENT_FAKE token. Resolve this issue by test initializing the PMU parsing state before every parse. This must be done every parse as the state is removes after each parse_events. For some metrics this can yield negative values that are clipped to zero, and then cause divide by zero failures. perf metric: Encode and use metric-id as qualifier For a metric like IPC a group of events like {instructions, cycles}:W would be formed. If the events names were changed in parsing then the metric expression parser would fail to find them. This change makes the event encoding be something like: {instructions/metric-id=instructions/, cycles/metric-id=cycles/} and then uses the evsel's stable metric-id value to locate the events. This fixes the case that an event is restricted to user because of the paranoia setting: $ echo 2 > /proc/sys/kernel/perf_event_paranoid $ perf stat -M IPC /bin/true Performance counter stats for '/bin/true': 150,298 inst_retired.any:u # 0.77 IPC 187,095 cpu_clk_unhalted.thread:u 0.002042731 seconds time elapsed 0.000000000 seconds user 0.002377000 seconds sys Adding the metric-id as a qualifier has a complication in that qualifiers will become embedded in qualifiers. For example, msr/tsc/ could become msr/tsc,metric-id=msr/tsc// which will fail parse-events. To solve this problem the metric is encoded and decoded for the metric-id with !<num> standing in for an encoded value. Previously ! wasn't parsed. With this msr/tsc/ becomes msr/tsc,metric-id=msr!3tsc!3/ The metric expression parser is changed so that @ isn't changed to /, instead this is done when the ID is encoded for parse events. metricgroup__add_metric_non_group() and metricgroup__add_metric_weak_group() need to inject the metric-id qualifier, so to avoid repetition they are merged into a single metricgroup__build_event_string with error codes more rigorously checked. stat-shadow's prepare_metric() uses the metric-id to match the metricgroup code. As "metric-id=..." is added to all events, it is adding during testing with the fake PMU. This complicates pmu_str_check code as PE_PMU_EVENT_FAKE won't match as part of a configuration. The testing fake PMU case is fixed so that if a known qualifier with an ! is parsed then it isn't reported as a fake PMU. This is sufficient to pass all testing but it and the original mechanism are somewhat brittle. Rather than add more arguments to the bison parser, add runtime to the context. Fix call sites not to pass a value. The runtime value is defaulted to 0, which is arbitrary. In some places this replaces a value of 1, which was also arbitrary. This shouldn't affect anything other than PPC. perf test: Fix metric parsing test Commit e1c92a7fbbc5 ("perf tests: Add another metric parsing test") add another test for metric parsing. The test goes through all metrics compiled for arch within pmu events and try to parse them. Right now this test is failing in powerpc machine. Result in power9 platform: [command]# ./perf test 10 10: PMU events : 10.1: PMU event table sanity : Ok 10.2: PMU event map aliases : Ok 10.3: Parsing of PMU event table metrics : Skip (some metrics failed) 10.4: Parsing of PMU event table metrics with fake PMUs : FAILED! Issue is we are passing different runtime parameter value in "expr__find_other" and "expr__parse" function which is called from function `metric_parse_fake`. And because of this parsing of hv-24x7 metrics is failing. perf tests: Add another metric parsing test The test goes through all metrics compiled for arch within pmu events and try to parse them. perf expr: Migrate expr ids table to a hashmap Use a hashmap between a char* string and a double* value. While bpf's hashmap entries are size_t in size, we can't guarantee sizeof(size_t) >= sizeof(double). Avoid a memory allocation when gathering ids by making 0.0 a special value encoded as NULL. Original map suggestion by Andi Kleen: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20200224210308.GQ160988@tassilo.jf.intel.com/ and seconded by Jiri Olsa: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20200423112915.GH1136647@krava/ Committer notes: There are fixes that need to land upstream before we can use libbpf's headers, for now use our copy unconditionally, since the data structures at this point are exactly the same, no problem. When the fixes for libbpf's hashmap land upstream, we can fix this up. Testing it: Building with LIBBPF=1, i.e. the default: $ perf -vv | grep -i bpf bpf: [ on ] # HAVE_LIBBPF_SUPPORT $ nm ~/bin/perf | grep -i libbpf_ | wc -l 39 $ nm ~/bin/perf | grep -i hashmap_ | wc -l 17 $ Explicitely building without LIBBPF: $ perf -vv | grep -i bpf bpf: [ OFF ] # HAVE_LIBBPF_SUPPORT $ $ nm ~/bin/perf | grep -i libbpf_ | wc -l 0 $ nm ~/bin/perf | grep -i hashmap_ | wc -l 9 $ Signed-off-by: Ian Rogers <irogers@google.com> Tested-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Cc: Adrian Hunter <adrian.hunter@intel.com> Cc: Alexander Shishkin <alexander.shishkin@linux.intel.com> Cc: Alexei Starovoitov <ast@kernel.org> Cc: Andi Kleen <ak@linux.intel.com> Cc: Andrii Nakryiko <andriin@fb.com> Cc: Cong Wang <xiyou.wangcong@gmail.com> Cc: Daniel Borkmann <daniel@iogearbox.net> Cc: Jin Yao <yao.jin@linux.intel.com> Cc: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@redhat.com> Cc: John Fastabend <john.fastabend@gmail.com> Cc: John Garry <john.garry@huawei.com> Cc: Kajol Jain <kjain@linux.ibm.com> Cc: Kan Liang <kan.liang@linux.intel.com> Cc: Kim Phillips <kim.phillips@amd.com> Cc: Leo Yan <leo.yan@linaro.org> Cc: Mark Rutland <mark.rutland@arm.com> Cc: Martin KaFai Lau <kafai@fb.com> Cc: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: Song Liu <songliubraving@fb.com> Cc: Stephane Eranian <eranian@google.com> Cc: Yonghong Song <yhs@fb.com> Cc: bpf@vger.kernel.org Cc: kp singh <kpsingh@chromium.org> Cc: netdev@vger.kernel.org Link: http://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20200515221732.44078-8-irogers@google.com Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>

perf test: Improve pmu event metric testing Break pmu-events test into 2 and add a test to verify that all pmu metric expressions simply parse. Try to parse all metric ids/events, skip/warn if metrics for the current architecture fail to parse. To support warning for a skip, and an ability for a subtest to describe why it skips. Tested on power9, skylakex, haswell, broadwell, westmere, sandybridge and ivybridge. May skip/warn on other architectures if metrics are invalid. In particular s390 is untested, but its expressions are trivial. The untested architectures with expressions are power8, cascadelakex, tremontx, skylake, jaketown, ivytown and variants of haswell and broadwell. v3. addresses review comments from John Garry <john.garry@huawei.com>, Jiri Olsa <jolsa@redhat.com> and Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@kernel.org>. v2. changes the commit message as event parsing errors no longer cause the test to fail. Committer notes: Check the return value of strtod() to fix the build in systems where that function is declared with attribute warn_unused_result. perf test: Test pmu-events aliases Add creating event aliases to the pmu-events test. So currently we verify that the generated pmu-events.c is as expected for some test events. Now test that we generate aliases as expected for those events during normal operation. For that, we cycle through each HW PMU in the system, and use the test events to create aliases, and verify those against known, expected values. For core PMUs, we should create an alias for every event in test_cpu_events[]. However, for uncore PMUs, they need to be matched by the pmu_event.pmu member, so use test_uncore_events[]; so check the match beforehand with pmu_uncore_alias_match().
