bpfilter: remove bpfilter

bpfilter was supposed to convert iptables filtering rules into
BPF programs on the fly, from the kernel, through a usermode
helper. The base code for the UMH was introduced in 2018, and
couple of attempts (2, 3) tried to introduce the BPF program
generate features but were abandoned.

bpfilter now sits in a kernel tree unused and unusable, occasionally
causing confusion amongst Linux users (4, 5).

As bpfilter is now developed in a dedicated repository on GitHub (6),
it was suggested a couple of times this year (LSFMM/BPF 2023,
LPC 2023) to remove the deprecated kernel part of the project. This
is the purpose of this patch.

bpftool: Use "fallthrough;" keyword instead of comments

After using "__fallthrough;" in a switch/case block in bpftool's
btf_dumper.c [0], and then turning it into a comment [1] to prevent a
merge conflict in linux-next when the keyword was changed into just
"fallthrough;" [2], we can now drop the comment and use the new keyword,
no underscores.

Also update the other occurrence of "/* fallthrough */" in bpftool.

bpftool: JIT limited misreported as negative value on aarch64

On aarch64, "bpftool feature" reports an incorrect BPF JIT limit:

$ sudo /sbin/bpftool feature
Scanning system configuration...

JIT compiler is enabled
JIT compiler hardening is disabled
JIT compiler kallsyms exports are enabled for root
skipping kernel config, can't open file: No such file or directory
Global memory limit for JIT compiler for unprivileged users is -201326592 bytes

This is because /proc/sys/net/core/bpf_jit_limit reports

$ sudo cat /proc/sys/net/core/bpf_jit_limit
68169519595520

...and an int is assumed in read_procfs(). Change read_procfs()
to return a long to avoid negative value reporting.

bpftool: Rename "bpftool feature list" into "... feature list_builtins"

To make it more explicit that the features listed with "bpftool feature
list" are known to bpftool, but not necessary available on the system
(as opposed to the probed features), rename the "feature list" command
into "feature list_builtins".

Note that "bpftool feature list" still works as before given that we
recognise arguments from their prefixes; but the real name of the
subcommand, in particular as displayed in the man page or the
interactive help, will now include "_builtins".

Since we update the bash completion accordingly, let's also take this
chance to redirect error output to /dev/null in the completion script,
to avoid displaying unexpected error messages when users attempt to
tab-complete.

bpftool: Add feature list (prog/map/link/attach types, helpers)

Add a "bpftool feature list" subcommand to list BPF "features".
Contrarily to "bpftool feature probe", this is not about the features
available on the system. Instead, it lists all features known to bpftool
from compilation time; in other words, all program, map, attach, link
types known to the libbpf version in use, and all helpers found in the
UAPI BPF header.

The first use case for this feature is bash completion: running the
command provides a list of types that can be used to produce the list of
candidate map types, for example.

Now that bpftool uses "standard" names provided by libbpf for the
program, map, link, and attach types, having the ability to list these
types and helpers could also be useful in scripts to loop over existing
items.

Sample output:

Revert "bpftool: Use libbpf 1.0 API mode instead of RLIMIT_MEMLOCK"

This reverts commit a777e18f1bcd32528ff5dfd10a6629b655b05eb8.

In commit a777e18f1bcd ("bpftool: Use libbpf 1.0 API mode instead of
RLIMIT_MEMLOCK"), we removed the rlimit bump in bpftool, because the
kernel has switched to memcg-based memory accounting. Thanks to the
LIBBPF_STRICT_AUTO_RLIMIT_MEMLOCK, we attempted to keep compatibility
with other systems and ask libbpf to raise the limit for us if
necessary.

How do we know if memcg-based accounting is supported? There is a probe
in libbpf to check this. But this probe currently relies on the
availability of a given BPF helper, bpf_ktime_get_coarse_ns(), which
landed in the same kernel version as the memory accounting change. This
works in the generic case, but it may fail, for example, if the helper
function has been backported to an older kernel. This has been observed
for Google Cloud's Container-Optimized OS (COS), where the helper is
available but rlimit is still in use. The probe succeeds, the rlimit is
not raised, and probing features with bpftool, for example, fails.

A patch was submitted [0] to update this probe in libbpf, based on what
the cilium/ebpf Go library does [1]. It would lower the soft rlimit to
0, attempt to load a BPF object, and reset the rlimit. But it may induce
some hard-to-debug flakiness if another process starts, or the current
application is killed, while the rlimit is reduced, and the approach was
discarded.

As a workaround to ensure that the rlimit bump does not depend on the
availability of a given helper, we restore the unconditional rlimit bump
in bpftool for now.

bpftool: Output message if no helpers found in feature probing

Currently in libbpf, we have hardcoded program types that are not
supported for helper function probing (e.g. tracing, ext, lsm).
Due to this (and other legitimate failures), bpftool feature probe returns
empty for those program type helper functions.

Instead of implying to the user that there are no helper functions
available for a program type, we output a message to the user explaining
that helper function probing failed for that program type.

bpftool: Adjust for error codes from libbpf probes

Originally [1], libbpf's (now deprecated) probe functions returned a bool
to acknowledge support but the new APIs return an int with a possible
negative error code to reflect probe failure. This change decides for
bpftool to declare maps and helpers are not available on probe failures.

We have switched to memcg-based memory accouting and thus the rlimit is
not needed any more. LIBBPF_STRICT_AUTO_RLIMIT_MEMLOCK was introduced in
libbpf for backward compatibility, so we can use it instead now.

libbpf_set_strict_mode always return 0, so we don't need to check whether
the return value is 0 or not.

bpftool: Restore support for BPF offload-enabled feature probing

Commit 1a56c18e6c2e4e74 ("bpftool: Stop supporting BPF offload-enabled
feature probing") removed the support to probe for BPF offload features.
This is still something that is useful for NFP NIC that can support
offloading of BPF programs.

The reason for the dropped support was that libbpf starting with v1.0
would drop support for passing the ifindex to the BPF prog/map/helper
feature probing APIs. In order to keep this useful feature for NFP
restore the functionality by moving it directly into bpftool.

The code restored is a simplified version of the code that existed in
libbpf which supposed passing the ifindex. The simplification is that it
only targets the cases where ifindex is given and call into libbpf for
the cases where it's not.

Before restoring support for probing offload features:

bpftool: Probe for instruction set extensions

This patch introduces new probes to check whether the kernel supports
instruction set extensions v2 and v3. The first introduced eBPF
instructions BPF_J{LT,LE,SLT,SLE} in commit 92b31a9af73b ("bpf: add
BPF_J{LT,LE,SLT,SLE} instructions"). The second introduces 32-bit
variants of all jump instructions in commit 092ed0968bb6 ("bpf:
verifier support JMP32").

These probes are useful for userspace BPF projects that want to use newer
instruction set extensions on newer kernels, to reduce the programs'
sizes or their complexity. LLVM already provides an mcpu=probe option to
automatically probe the kernel and select the newest-supported
instruction set extension. That is however not flexible enough for all
use cases. For example, in Cilium, we only want to use the v3
instruction set extension on v5.10+, even though it is supported on all
kernels v5.1+.

bpftool: Probe for bounded loop support

This patch introduces a new probe to check whether the verifier supports
bounded loops as introduced in commit 2589726d12a1 ("bpf: introduce
bounded loops"). This patch will allow BPF users such as Cilium to probe
for loop support on startup and only unconditionally unroll loops on
older kernels.

The results are displayed as part of the miscellaneous section, as shown
below.

bpftool: Refactor misc. feature probe

There is currently a single miscellaneous feature probe,
HAVE_LARGE_INSN_LIMIT, to check for the 1M instructions limit in the
verifier. Subsequent patches will add additional miscellaneous probes,
which follow the same pattern at the existing probe. This patch
therefore refactors the probe to avoid code duplication in subsequent
patches.

The BPF program type and the checked error numbers in the
HAVE_LARGE_INSN_LIMIT probe are changed to better generalize to other
probes. The feature probe retains its current behavior despite those
changes.

tools: bpftool: Update and synchronise option list in doc and help msg

All bpftool commands support the options for JSON output and debug from
libbpf. In addition, some commands support additional options
corresponding to specific use cases.

The list of options described in the man pages for the different
commands are not always accurate. The messages for interactive help are
mostly limited to HELP_SPEC_OPTIONS, and are even less representative of
the actual set of options supported for the commands.

Let's update the lists:

- HELP_SPEC_OPTIONS is modified to contain the "default" options (JSON
and debug), and to be extensible (no ending curly bracket).
- All commands use HELP_SPEC_OPTIONS in their help message, and then
complete the list with their specific options.
- The lists of options in the man pages are updated.
- The formatting of the list for bpftool.rst is adjusted to match
formatting for the other man pages. This is for consistency, and also
because it will be helpful in a future patch to automatically check
that the files are synchronised.

tools, bpftool: Skip type probe if name is not found

For probing program and map types, bpftool loops on type values and uses
the relevant type name in prog_type_name[] or map_type_name[]. To ensure
the name exists, we exit from the loop if we go over the size of the
array.

However, this is not enough in the case where the arrays have "holes" in
them, program or map types for which they have no name, but not at the
end of the list. This is currently the case for BPF_PROG_TYPE_LSM, not
known to bpftool and which name is a null string. When probing for
features, bpftool attempts to strlen() that name and segfaults.

Let's fix it by skipping probes for "unknown" program and map types,
with an informational message giving the numeral value in that case.

tools, bpftool: Make capability check account for new BPF caps

Following the introduction of CAP_BPF, and the switch from CAP_SYS_ADMIN
to other capabilities for various BPF features, update the capability
checks (and potentially, drops) in bpftool for feature probes. Because
bpftool and/or the system might not know of CAP_BPF yet, some caution is
necessary:

- If compiled and run on a system with CAP_BPF, check CAP_BPF,
CAP_SYS_ADMIN, CAP_PERFMON, CAP_NET_ADMIN.

- Guard against CAP_BPF being undefined, to allow compiling bpftool from
latest sources on older systems. If the system where feature probes
are run does not know of CAP_BPF, stop checking after CAP_SYS_ADMIN,
as this should be the only capability required for all the BPF
probing.

- If compiled from latest sources on a system without CAP_BPF, but later
executed on a newer system with CAP_BPF knowledge, then we only test
CAP_SYS_ADMIN. Some probes may fail if the bpftool process has
CAP_SYS_ADMIN but misses the other capabilities. The alternative would
be to redefine the value for CAP_BPF in bpftool, but this does not
look clean, and the case sounds relatively rare anyway.

Note that libcap offers a cap_to_name() function to retrieve the name of
a given capability (e.g. "cap_sys_admin"). We do not use it because
deriving the names from the macros looks simpler than using
cap_to_name() (doing a strdup() on the string) + cap_free() + handling
the case of failed allocations, when we just want to use the name of the
capability in an error message.

The checks when compiling without libcap (i.e. root versus non-root) are
unchanged.

v2:
- Do not allocate cap_list dynamically.
- Drop BPF-related capabilities when running with "unprivileged", even
if we didn't have the full set in the first place (in v1, we would
skip dropping them in that case).
- Keep track of what capabilities we have, print the names of the
missing ones for privileged probing.
- Attempt to drop only the capabilities we actually have.
- Rename a couple variables.

tools, bpftool: Clean subcommand help messages

This is a clean-up for the formatting of the do_help functions for
bpftool's subcommands. The following fixes are included:

- Do not use argv[-2] for "iter" help message, as the help is shown by
default if no "iter" action is selected, resulting in messages looking
like "./bpftool bpftool pin...".

- Do not print unused HELP_SPEC_PROGRAM in help message for "bpftool
link".

- Andrii used argument indexing to avoid having multiple occurrences of
bin_name and argv[-2] in the fprintf() for the help message, for
"bpftool gen" and "bpftool link". Let's reuse this for all other help
functions. We can remove up to thirty arguments for the "bpftool map"
help message.

- Harmonise all functions, e.g. use ending quotes-comma on a separate
line.

bpf, bpftool: Allow probing for CONFIG_HZ from kernel config

In Cilium we've recently switched to make use of bpf_jiffies64() for
parts of our tc and XDP datapath since bpf_ktime_get_ns() is more
expensive and high-precision is not needed for our timeouts we have
anyway. Our agent has a probe manager which picks up the json of
bpftool's feature probe and we also use the macro output in our C
programs e.g. to have workarounds when helpers are not available on
older kernels.

Extend the kernel config info dump to also include the kernel's
CONFIG_HZ, and rework the probe_kernel_image_config() for allowing a
macro dump such that CONFIG_HZ can be propagated to BPF C code as a
simple define if available via config. Latter allows to have _compile-
time_ resolution of jiffies <-> sec conversion in our code since all
are propagated as known constants.

Given we cannot generally assume availability of kconfig everywhere,
we also have a kernel hz probe [0] as a fallback. Potentially, bpftool
could have an integrated probe fallback as well, although to derive it,
we might need to place it under 'bpftool feature probe full' or similar
given it would slow down the probing process overall. Yet 'full' doesn't
fit either for us since we don't want to pollute the kernel log with
warning messages from bpf_probe_write_user() and bpf_trace_printk() on
agent startup; I've left it out for the time being.

bpftool, and we could imagine building the tool without checks on

packaging/embedding of bpftool.

tools: bpftool: Allow unprivileged users to probe features

There is demand for a way to identify what BPF helper functions are
available to unprivileged users. To do so, allow unprivileged users to
run "bpftool feature probe" to list BPF-related features. This will only
show features accessible to those users, and may not reflect the full
list of features available (to administrators) on the system.

To avoid the case where bpftool is inadvertently run as non-root and
would list only a subset of the features supported by the system when it
would be expected to list all of them, running as unprivileged is gated
behind the "unprivileged" keyword passed to the command line. When used
by a privileged user, this keyword allows to drop the CAP_SYS_ADMIN and
to list the features available to unprivileged users. Note that this
addsd a dependency on libpcap for compiling bpftool.

Note that there is no particular reason why the probes were restricted
to root, other than the fact I did not need them for unprivileged and
did not bother with the additional checks at the time probes were added.

tools: bpftool: For "feature probe" define "full_mode" bool as global

The "full_mode" variable used for switching between full or partial
feature probing (i.e. with or without probing helpers that will log
warnings in kernel logs) was piped from the main do_probe() function
down to probe_helpers_for_progtype(), where it is needed.

Define it as a global variable: the calls will be more readable, and if
other similar flags were to be used in the future, we could use global
variables as well instead of extending again the list of arguments with
new flags.

bpftool: Use consistent include paths for libbpf

Fix bpftool to include libbpf header files with the bpf/ prefix, to be
consistent with external users of the library. Also ensure that all
includes of exported libbpf header files (those that are exported on 'make
install' of the library) use bracketed includes instead of quoted.

To make sure no new files are introduced that doesn't include the bpf/
prefix in its include, remove tools/lib/bpf from the include path entirely,
and use tools/lib instead.

tools: bpftool: fix reading from /proc/config.gz

/proc/config has never existed as far as I can see, but /proc/config.gz
is present on Arch Linux. Add support for decompressing config.gz using
zlib which is a mandatory dependency of libelf anyway. Replace existing
stdio functions with gzFile operations since the latter transparently
handles uncompressed and gzip-compressed files.

tools: bpftool: add probes for a network device

bpftool gained support for probing the current system in order to see
what program and map types, and what helpers are available on that
system. This patch adds the possibility to pass an interface index to
libbpf (and hence to the kernel) when trying to load the programs or to
create the maps, in order to see what items a given network device can
support.

A new keyword "dev <ifname>" can be used as an alternative to "kernel"
to indicate that the given device should be tested. If no target ("dev"
or "kernel") is specified bpftool defaults to probing the kernel.

As the target is a network device, /proc/ parameters and kernel
configuration are NOT dumped. Availability of the bpf() syscall is
still probed, so we can return early if that syscall is not usable
(since there is no point in attempting the remaining probes in this
case).

Among the program types, only the ones that can be offloaded are probed.
All map types are probed, as there is no specific rule telling which one
could or could not be supported by a device in the future. All helpers
are probed (but only for offload-able program types).

Caveat: as bpftool does not attempt to attach programs to the device at
the moment, probes do not entirely reflect what the device accepts:
typically, for Netronome's nfp, results will announce that TC cls
offload is available even if support has been deactivated (with e.g.
ethtool -K eth1 hw-tc-offload off).

v2:
- All helpers are probed, whereas previous version would only probe the
ones compatible with an offload-able program type. This is because we
do not keep a default compatible program type for each helper anymore.

Make bpftool able to dump a subset of the parameters collected by
probing the system as a listing of C-style #define macros, so that
external projects can reuse the result of this probing and build
BPF-based project in accordance with the features available on the
system.

The new "macros" keyword is used to select this output. An additional
"prefix" keyword is added so that users can select a custom prefix for
macro names, in order to avoid any namespace conflict.

probes to test the availability of the different eBPF helper functions

For each known program type, all known helpers are tested, in order to

tools: bpftool: add probes for kernel configuration options

Add probes to dump a number of options set (or not set) for compiling
the kernel image. These parameters provide information about what BPF
components should be available on the system. A number of them are not
directly related to eBPF, but are in fact used in the kernel as
conditions on which to compile, or not to compile, some of the eBPF
helper functions.

Add a set of probes to dump the eBPF-related parameters available from
/proc/: availability of bpf() syscall for unprivileged users,
JIT compiler status and hardening status, kallsyms exports status.

tools: bpftool: add basic probe capability, probe syscall availability

Add a new component and command for bpftool, in order to probe the
system to dump a set of eBPF-related parameters so that users can know
what features are available on the system.

Parameters are dumped in plain or JSON output (with -j/-p options).

The current patch introduces probing of one simple parameter:
availability of the bpf() system call. Later commits
will add other probes.

The optional "kernel" keyword enforces probing of the current system,
which is the only possible behaviour at this stage. It can be safely
omitted.

The feature comes with the relevant man page, but bash completion will
come in a dedicated commit.

v3:
- Do not probe kernel version. Contrarily to what is written below for
v2, we can have the kernel version retrieved in libbpf instead of
bpftool (in the patch adding probing for program types).

v2:
- Remove C-style macros output from this patch.
- Even though kernel version is no longer needed for testing kprobes
availability, note that we still collect it in this patch so that
bpftool gets able to probe (in next patches) older kernels as well.
