evm: Make it independent from 'integrity' LSM Define a new structure for EVM-specific metadata, called evm_iint_cache, and embed it in the inode security blob. Introduce evm_iint_inode() to retrieve metadata, and register evm_inode_alloc_security() for the inode_alloc_security LSM hook, to initialize the structure (before splitting metadata, this task was done by iint_init_always()). Keep the non-NULL checks after calling evm_iint_inode() except in evm_inode_alloc_security(), to take into account inodes for which security_inode_alloc() was not called. When using shared metadata, obtaining a NULL pointer from integrity_iint_find() meant that the file wasn't in the IMA policy. Now, because IMA and EVM use disjoint metadata, the EVM status has to be stored for every inode regardless of the IMA policy. Given that from now on EVM relies on its own metadata, remove the iint parameter from evm_verifyxattr(). Also, directly retrieve the iint in evm_verify_hmac(), called by both evm_verifyxattr() and evm_verify_current_integrity(), since now there is no performance penalty in retrieving EVM metadata (constant time). Replicate the management of the IMA_NEW_FILE flag, by introducing evm_post_path_mknod() and evm_file_release() to respectively set and clear the newly introduced flag EVM_NEW_FILE, at the same time IMA does. Like for IMA, select CONFIG_SECURITY_PATH when EVM is enabled, to ensure that files are marked as new. Unlike ima_post_path_mknod(), evm_post_path_mknod() cannot check if a file must be appraised. Thus, it marks all affected files. Also, it does not clear EVM_NEW_FILE depending on i_version, but that is not a problem because IMA_NEW_FILE is always cleared when set in ima_check_last_writer(). Move the EVM-specific flag EVM_IMMUTABLE_DIGSIG to security/integrity/evm/evm.h, since that definition is now unnecessary in the common integrity layer. Finally, switch to the LSM reservation mechanism for the EVM xattr, and consequently decrement by one the number of xattrs to allocate in security_inode_init_security(). evm: Move to LSM infrastructure As for IMA, move hardcoded EVM function calls from various places in the kernel to the LSM infrastructure, by introducing a new LSM named 'evm' (last and always enabled like 'ima'). The order in the Makefile ensures that 'evm' hooks are executed after 'ima' ones. Make EVM functions as static (except for evm_inode_init_security(), which is exported), and register them as hook implementations in init_evm_lsm(). Also move the inline functions evm_inode_remove_acl(), evm_inode_post_remove_acl(), and evm_inode_post_set_acl() from the public evm.h header to evm_main.c. Unlike before (see commit to move IMA to the LSM infrastructure), evm_inode_post_setattr(), evm_inode_post_set_acl(), evm_inode_post_remove_acl(), and evm_inode_post_removexattr() are not executed for private inodes. evm: Support multiple LSMs providing an xattr Currently, evm_inode_init_security() processes a single LSM xattr from the array passed by security_inode_init_security(), and calculates the HMAC on it and other inode metadata. As the LSM infrastructure now can pass to EVM an array with multiple xattrs, scan them until the terminator (xattr name NULL), and calculate the HMAC on all of them. Also, double check that the xattrs array terminator is the first non-filled slot (obtained with lsm_get_xattr_slot()). Consumers of the xattrs array, such as the initxattrs() callbacks, rely on the terminator. Finally, change the name of the lsm_xattr parameter of evm_init_hmac() to xattrs, to reflect the new type of information passed. Keep the existing behavior of including in the HMAC calculation only the first xattr provided by LSMs. Changing the evm_inode_init_security() definition requires passing the xattr array allocated by security_inode_init_security(), and the number of xattrs filled by previously invoked LSMs. Use the newly introduced lsm_get_xattr_slot() to position EVM correctly in the xattrs array, like a regular LSM, and to increment the number of filled slots. For now, the LSM infrastructure allocates enough xattrs slots to store the EVM xattr, without using the reservation mechanism. lsm,fs: fix vfs_getxattr_alloc() return type and caller error paths The vfs_getxattr_alloc() function currently returns a ssize_t value despite the fact that it only uses int values internally for return values. Fix this by converting vfs_getxattr_alloc() to return an int type and adjust the callers as necessary. As part of these caller modifications, some of the callers are fixed to properly free the xattr value buffer on both success and failure to ensure that memory is not leaked in the failure case. evm: remove evm_xattr_acl_change() The security and integrity infrastructure has dedicated hooks now so evm_xattr_acl_change() is dead code. Before this commit the callchain was: evm_protect_xattr() -> evm_xattr_change() -> evm_xattr_acl_change() where evm_protect_xattr() was hit from evm_inode_setxattr() and evm_inode_removexattr(). But now we have evm_inode_set_acl() and evm_inode_remove_acl() and have switched over the vfs to rely on the posix acl api so the code isn't hit anymore. integrity: implement get and set acl hook The current way of setting and getting posix acls through the generic xattr interface is error prone and type unsafe. The vfs needs to interpret and fixup posix acls before storing or reporting it to userspace. Various hacks exist to make this work. The code is hard to understand and difficult to maintain in it's current form. Instead of making this work by hacking posix acls through xattr handlers we are building a dedicated posix acl api around the get and set inode operations. This removes a lot of hackiness and makes the codepaths easier to maintain. A lot of background can be found in [1]. So far posix acls were passed as a void blob to the security and integrity modules. Some of them like evm then proceed to interpret the void pointer and convert it into the kernel internal struct posix acl representation to perform their integrity checking magic. This is obviously pretty problematic as that requires knowledge that only the vfs is guaranteed to have and has lead to various bugs. Add a proper security hook for setting posix acls and pass down the posix acls in their appropriate vfs format instead of hacking it through a void pointer stored in the uapi format. I spent considerate time in the security module and integrity infrastructure and audited all codepaths. EVM is the only part that really has restrictions based on the actual posix acl values passed through it (e.g., i_mode). Before this dedicated hook EVM used to translate from the uapi posix acl format sent to it in the form of a void pointer into the vfs format. This is not a good thing. Instead of hacking around in the uapi struct give EVM the posix acls in the appropriate vfs format and perform sane permissions checks that mirror what it used to to in the generic xattr hook. IMA doesn't have any restrictions on posix acls. When posix acls are changed it just wants to update its appraisal status to trigger an EVM revalidation. The removal of posix acls is equivalent to passing NULL to the posix set acl hooks. This is the same as before through the generic xattr api. acl: move idmapping handling into posix_acl_xattr_set() The uapi POSIX ACL struct passed through the value argument during setxattr() contains {g,u}id values encoded via ACL_{GROUP,USER} entries that should actually be stored in the form of k{g,u}id_t (See [1] for a long explanation of the issue.). In 0c5fd887d2bb ("acl: move idmapped mount fixup into vfs_{g,s}etxattr()") we took the mount's idmapping into account in order to let overlayfs handle POSIX ACLs on idmapped layers correctly. The fixup is currently performed directly in vfs_setxattr() which piles on top of the earlier hackiness by handling the mount's idmapping and stuff the vfs{g,u}id_t values into the uapi struct as well. While that is all correct and works fine it's just ugly. Now that we have introduced vfs_make_posix_acl() earlier move handling idmapped mounts out of vfs_setxattr() and into the POSIX ACL handler where it belongs. Note that we also need to call vfs_make_posix_acl() for EVM which interpretes POSIX ACLs during security_inode_setxattr(). Leave them a longer comment for future reference. All filesystems that support idmapped mounts via FS_ALLOW_IDMAP use the standard POSIX ACL xattr handlers and are covered by this change. This includes overlayfs which simply calls vfs_{g,s}etxattr(). The following filesystems use custom POSIX ACL xattr handlers: 9p, cifs, ecryptfs, and ntfs3 (and overlayfs but we've covered that in the paragraph above) and none of them support idmapped mounts yet. attr: port attribute changes to new types Now that we introduced new infrastructure to increase the type safety for filesystems supporting idmapped mounts port the first part of the vfs over to them. This ports the attribute changes codepaths to rely on the new better helpers using a dedicated type. Before this change we used to take a shortcut and place the actual values that would be written to inode->i_{g,u}id into struct iattr. This had the advantage that we moved idmappings mostly out of the picture early on but it made reasoning about changes more difficult than it should be. The filesystem was never explicitly told that it dealt with an idmapped mount. The transition to the value that needed to be stored in inode->i_{g,u}id appeared way too early and increased the probability of bugs in various codepaths. We know place the same value in struct iattr no matter if this is an idmapped mount or not. The vfs will only deal with type safe vfs{g,u}id_t. This makes it massively safer to perform permission checks as the type will tell us what checks we need to perform and what helpers we need to use. Fileystems raising FS_ALLOW_IDMAP can't simply write ia_vfs{g,u}id to inode->i_{g,u}id since they are different types. Instead they need to use the dedicated vfs{g,u}id_to_k{g,u}id() helpers that map the vfs{g,u}id into the filesystem. The other nice effect is that filesystems like overlayfs don't need to care about idmappings explicitly anymore and can simply set up struct iattr accordingly directly. security: pass down mount idmapping to setattr hook Before this change we used to take a shortcut and place the actual values that would be written to inode->i_{g,u}id into struct iattr. This had the advantage that we moved idmappings mostly out of the picture early on but it made reasoning about changes more difficult than it should be. The filesystem was never explicitly told that it dealt with an idmapped mount. The transition to the value that needed to be stored in inode->i_{g,u}id appeared way too early and increased the probability of bugs in various codepaths. We know place the same value in struct iattr no matter if this is an idmapped mount or not. The vfs will only deal with type safe vfs{g,u}id_t. This makes it massively safer to perform permission checks as the type will tell us what checks we need to perform and what helpers we need to use. Adapt the security_inode_setattr() helper to pass down the mount's idmapping to account for that change. fs: port to iattr ownership update helpers Earlier we introduced new helpers to abstract ownership update and remove code duplication. This converts all filesystems supporting idmapped mounts to make use of these new helpers. For now we always pass the initial idmapping which makes the idmapping functions these helpers call nops. This is done because we currently always pass the actual value to be written to i_{g,u}id via struct iattr. While this allowed us to treat the {g,u}id values in struct iattr as values that can be directly written to inode->i_{g,u}id it also increases the potential for confusion for filesystems. Now that we are have dedicated types to prevent this confusion we will ultimately only map the value from the idmapped mount into a filesystem value that can be written to inode->i_{g,u}id when the filesystem actually updates the inode. So pass down the initial idmapping until we finished that conversion at which point we pass down the mount's idmapping. No functional changes intended. Returning 0 causes the entire string to be added to init's environment strings (limited to 32 strings), unnecessarily polluting it. ima/evm: Fix type mismatch The endianness of a variable written to the measurement list cannot be determined at compile time, as it depends on the value of the ima_canonical_fmt global variable (set through a kernel option with the same name if the machine is big endian). If ima_canonical_fmt is false, the endianness of a variable is the same as the machine; if ima_canonical_fmt is true, the endianness is little endian. The warning arises due to this type of instruction: var = cpu_to_leXX(var) which tries to assign a value in little endian to a variable with native endianness (little or big endian). evm: Verify portable signatures against all protected xattrs Currently, the evm_config_default_xattrnames array contains xattr names only related to LSMs which are enabled in the kernel configuration. However, EVM portable signatures do not depend on local information and a vendor might include in the signature calculation xattrs that are not enabled in the target platform. Just including all xattrs names in evm_config_default_xattrnames is not a safe approach, because a target system might have already calculated signatures or HMACs based only on the enabled xattrs. After applying this patch, EVM would verify those signatures and HMACs with all xattrs instead. The non-enabled ones, which could possibly exist, would cause a verification error. Thus, this patch adds a new field named enabled to the xattr_list structure, which is set to true if the LSM associated to a given xattr name is enabled in the kernel configuration. The non-enabled xattrs are taken into account only in evm_calc_hmac_or_hash(), if the passed security.evm type is EVM_XATTR_PORTABLE_DIGSIG. The new function evm_protected_xattr_if_enabled() has been defined so that IMA can include all protected xattrs and not only the enabled ones in the measurement list, if the new template fields xattrnames, xattrlengths or xattrvalues have been included in the template format. evm: Allow setxattr() and setattr() for unmodified metadata With the patch to allow xattr/attr operations if a portable signature verification fails, cp and tar can copy all xattrs/attrs so that at the end of the process verification succeeds. However, it might happen that the xattrs/attrs are already set to the correct value (taken at signing time) and signature verification succeeds before the copy has completed. For example, an archive might contains files owned by root and the archive is extracted by root. Then, since portable signatures are immutable, all subsequent operations fail (e.g. fchown()), even if the operation is legitimate (does not alter the current value). This patch avoids this problem by reporting successful operation to user space when that operation does not alter the current value of xattrs/attrs. With this patch, the one that introduces evm_hmac_disabled() and the one that allows a metadata operation on the INTEGRITY_FAIL_IMMUTABLE error, EVM portable signatures can be used without disabling metadata verification (by setting EVM_ALLOW_METADATA_WRITES). Due to keeping metadata verification enabled, altering immutable metadata protected with a portable signature that was successfully verified will be denied (existing behavior). evm: Allow xattr/attr operations for portable signatures If files with portable signatures are copied from one location to another or are extracted from an archive, verification can temporarily fail until all xattrs/attrs are set in the destination. Only portable signatures may be moved or copied from one file to another, as they don't depend on system-specific information such as the inode generation. Instead portable signatures must include security.ima. Unlike other security.evm types, EVM portable signatures are also immutable. Thus, it wouldn't be a problem to allow xattr/attr operations when verification fails, as portable signatures will never be replaced with the HMAC on possibly corrupted xattrs/attrs. This patch first introduces a new integrity status called INTEGRITY_FAIL_IMMUTABLE, that allows callers of evm_verify_current_integrity() to detect that a portable signature didn't pass verification and then adds an exception in evm_protect_xattr() and evm_inode_setattr() for this status and returns 0 instead of -EPERM. evm: Introduce evm_hmac_disabled() to safely ignore verification errors When a file is being created, LSMs can set the initial label with the inode_init_security hook. If no HMAC key is loaded, the new file will have LSM xattrs but not the HMAC. It is also possible that the file remains without protected xattrs after creation if no active LSM provided it, or because the filesystem does not support them. Unfortunately, EVM will deny any further metadata operation on new files, as evm_protect_xattr() will return the INTEGRITY_NOLABEL error if protected xattrs exist without security.evm, INTEGRITY_NOXATTRS if no protected xattrs exist or INTEGRITY_UNKNOWN if xattrs are not supported. This would limit the usability of EVM when only a public key is loaded, as commands such as cp or tar with the option to preserve xattrs won't work. This patch introduces the evm_hmac_disabled() function to determine whether or not it is safe to ignore verification errors, based on the ability of EVM to calculate HMACs. If the HMAC key is not loaded, and it cannot be loaded in the future due to the EVM_SETUP_COMPLETE initialization flag, allowing an operation despite the attrs/xattrs being found invalid will not make them valid. Since the post hooks can be executed even when the HMAC key is not loaded, this patch also ensures that the EVM_INIT_HMAC initialization flag is set before the post hooks call evm_update_evmxattr(). evm: Introduce evm_revalidate_status() When EVM_ALLOW_METADATA_WRITES is set, EVM allows any operation on metadata. Its main purpose is to allow users to freely set metadata when it is protected by a portable signature, until an HMAC key is loaded. However, callers of evm_verifyxattr() are not notified about metadata changes and continue to rely on the last status returned by the function. For example IMA, since it caches the appraisal result, will not call again evm_verifyxattr() until the appraisal flags are cleared, and will grant access to the file even if there was a metadata operation that made the portable signature invalid. This patch introduces evm_revalidate_status(), which callers of evm_verifyxattr() can use in their xattr hooks to determine whether re-validation is necessary and to do the proper actions. IMA calls it in its xattr hooks to reset the appraisal flags, so that the EVM status is re-evaluated after a metadata operation. Lastly, this patch also adds a call to evm_reset_status() in evm_inode_post_setattr() to invalidate the cached EVM status after a setattr operation. evm: Execute evm_inode_init_security() only when an HMAC key is loaded evm_inode_init_security() requires an HMAC key to calculate the HMAC on initial xattrs provided by LSMs. However, it checks generically whether a key has been loaded, including also public keys, which is not correct as public keys are not suitable to calculate the HMAC. Originally, support for signature verification was introduced to verify a possibly immutable initial ram disk, when no new files are created, and to switch to HMAC for the root filesystem. By that time, an HMAC key should have been loaded and usable to calculate HMACs for new files. More recently support for requiring an HMAC key was removed from the kernel, so that signature verification can be used alone. Since this is a legitimate use case, evm_inode_init_security() should not return an error when no HMAC key has been loaded. This patch fixes this problem by replacing the evm_key_loaded() check with a check of the EVM_INIT_HMAC flag in evm_initialized. xattr: handle idmapped mounts When interacting with extended attributes the vfs verifies that the caller is privileged over the inode with which the extended attribute is associated. For posix access and posix default extended attributes a uid or gid can be stored on-disk. Let the functions handle posix extended attributes on idmapped mounts. If the inode is accessed through an idmapped mount we need to map it according to the mount's user namespace. Afterwards the checks are identical to non-idmapped mounts. This has no effect for e.g. security xattrs since they don't store uids or gids and don't perform permission checks on them like posix acls do. integrity: Introduce struct evm_xattr Even though struct evm_ima_xattr_data includes a fixed-size array to hold a SHA1 digest, most of the code ignores the array and uses the struct to mean "type indicator followed by data of unspecified size" and tracks the real size of what the struct represents in a separate length variable. The only exception to that is the EVM code, which correctly uses the definition of struct evm_ima_xattr_data. So make this explicit in the code by removing the length specification from the array in struct evm_ima_xattr_data. Also, change the name of the element from digest to data since in most places the array doesn't hold a digest. A separate struct evm_xattr is introduced, with the original definition of evm_ima_xattr_data to be used in the places that actually expect that definition, specifically the EVM HMAC code. EVM: Allow runtime modification of the set of verified xattrs Sites may wish to provide additional metadata alongside files in order to make more fine-grained security decisions[1]. The security of this is enhanced if this metadata is protected, something that EVM makes possible. However, the kernel cannot know about the set of extended attributes that local admins may wish to protect, and hardcoding this policy in the kernel makes it difficult to change over time and less convenient for distributions to enable. This patch adds a new /sys/kernel/security/integrity/evm/evm_xattrs node, which can be read to obtain the current set of EVM-protected extended attributes or written to in order to add new entries. Extending this list will not change the validity of any existing signatures provided that the file in question does not have any of the additional extended attributes - missing xattrs are skipped when calculating the EVM hash. [1] For instance, a package manager could install information about the package uploader in an additional extended attribute. Local LSM policy could then be associated with that extended attribute in order to restrict the privileges available to packages from less trusted uploaders. evm: check for remount ro in progress before writing EVM might update the evm xattr while the VFS performs a remount to readonly mode. This is not properly checked for, additionally check the s_readonly_remount superblock flag before writing. The bug can for example be observed with UBIFS. UBIFS checks the free space on the device before and after a remount. With EVM enabled the free space sometimes differs between both checks. EVM: Add support for portable signature format The EVM signature includes the inode number and (optionally) the filesystem UUID, making it impractical to ship EVM signatures in packages. This patch adds a new portable format intended to allow distributions to include EVM signatures. It is identical to the existing format but hardcodes the inode and generation numbers to 0 and does not include the filesystem UUID even if the kernel is configured to do so. Removing the inode means that the metadata and signature from one file could be copied to another file without invalidating it. This is avoided by ensuring that an IMA xattr is present during EVM validation. Portable signatures are intended to be immutable - ie, they will never be transformed into HMACs. Based on earlier work by Dmitry Kasatkin and Mikhail Kurinnoi. EVM: Allow userland to permit modification of EVM-protected metadata When EVM is enabled it forbids modification of metadata protected by EVM unless there is already a valid EVM signature. If any modification is made, the kernel will then generate a new EVM HMAC. However, this does not map well on use cases which use only asymmetric EVM signatures, as in this scenario the kernel is unable to generate new signatures. This patch extends the /sys/kernel/security/evm interface to allow userland to request that modification of these xattrs be permitted. This is only permitted if no keys have already been loaded. In this configuration, modifying the metadata will invalidate the EVM appraisal on the file in question. This allows packaging systems to write out new files, set the relevant extended attributes and then move them into place. There's also some refactoring of the use of evm_initialized in order to avoid heading down codepaths that assume there's a key available. EVM, before allowing a protected, security xattr to be written, verifies the existing 'security.evm' value is good. evm: add file system uuid to EVM hmac EVM uses the same key for all file systems to calculate the HMAC, making it possible to paste inodes from one file system on to another one, without EVM being able to detect it. To prevent such an attack, it is necessary to make the EVM HMAC file system specific. This patch uses the file system UUID, a file system unique identifier, to bind the EVM HMAC to the file system. The value inode->i_sb->s_uuid is used for the HMAC hash calculation, instead of using it for deriving the file system specific key. Initializing the key for every inode HMAC calculation is a bit more expensive operation than adding the uuid to the HMAC hash. Changing the HMAC calculation method or adding additional info to the calculation, requires existing EVM labeled file systems to be relabeled. This patch adds a Kconfig HMAC version option for backwards compatability. ima: integrity appraisal extension IMA currently maintains an integrity measurement list used to assert the integrity of the running system to a third party. The IMA-appraisal extension adds local integrity validation and enforcement of the measurement against a "good" value stored as an extended attribute 'security.ima'. The initial methods for validating 'security.ima' are hashed based, which provides file data integrity, and digital signature based, which in addition to providing file data integrity, provides authenticity. This patch creates and maintains the 'security.ima' xattr, containing the file data hash measurement. Protection of the xattr is provided by EVM, if enabled and configured. Based on policy, IMA calls evm_verifyxattr() to verify a file's metadata integrity and, assuming success, compares the file's current hash value with the one stored as an extended attribute in 'security.ima'. evm: digital signature verification support This patch adds support for digital signature verification to EVM. With this feature file metadata can be protected using digital signature instead of an HMAC. When building an image, which has to be flashed to different devices, an HMAC cannot be used to sign file metadata, because the HMAC key should be different on every device. In the case that there are no existing EVM protected xattrs, it is safe for posix acls to update the mode bits. evm: evm_verify_hmac must not return INTEGRITY_UNKNOWN If EVM is not supported or enabled, evm_verify_hmac() returns INTEGRITY_UNKNOWN, which ima_appraise_measurement() ignores and sets the appraisal status based solely on the security.ima verification. evm_verify_hmac() also returns INTEGRITY_UNKNOWN for other failures, such as temporary failures like -ENOMEM, resulting in possible attack vectors. This patch changes the default return code for temporary/unexpected failures, like -ENOMEM, from INTEGRITY_UNKNOWN to INTEGRITY_FAIL, making evm_verify_hmac() fail safe. As a result, failures need to be re-evaluated in order to catch both temporary errors, such as the -ENOMEM, as well as errors that have been resolved in fix mode. evm: re-release EVM protects a file's security extended attributes(xattrs) against integrity attacks. This patchset provides the framework and an initial method. The initial method maintains an HMAC-sha1 value across the security extended attributes, storing the HMAC value as the extended attribute 'security.evm'. Other methods of validating the integrity of a file's metadata will be posted separately (eg. EVM-digital-signatures). While this patchset does authenticate the security xattrs, and cryptographically binds them to the inode, coming extensions will bind other directory and inode metadata for more complete protection. To help simplify the review and upstreaming process, each extension will be posted separately (eg. IMA-appraisal, IMA-appraisal-directory). For a general overview of the proposed Linux integrity subsystem, refer to Dave Safford's whitepaper: http://downloads.sf.net/project/linux-ima/linux-ima/Integrity_overview.pdf. EVM depends on the Kernel Key Retention System to provide it with a trusted/encrypted key for the HMAC-sha1 operation. The key is loaded onto the root's keyring using keyctl. Until EVM receives notification that the key has been successfully loaded onto the keyring (echo 1 > <securityfs>/evm), EVM can not create or validate the 'security.evm' xattr, but returns INTEGRITY_UNKNOWN. Loading the key and signaling EVM should be done as early as possible. Normally this is done in the initramfs, which has already been measured as part of the trusted boot. For more information on creating and loading existing trusted/encrypted keys, refer to Documentation/keys-trusted-encrypted.txt. A sample dracut patch, which loads the trusted/encrypted key and enables EVM, is available from http://linux-ima.sourceforge.net/#EVM. Based on the LSMs enabled, the set of EVM protected security xattrs is defined at compile. EVM adds the following three calls to the existing security hooks: evm_inode_setxattr(), evm_inode_post_setxattr(), and evm_inode_removexattr. To initialize and update the 'security.evm' extended attribute, EVM defines three calls: evm_inode_post_init(), evm_inode_post_setattr() and evm_inode_post_removexattr() hooks. To verify the integrity of a security xattr, EVM exports evm_verifyxattr().
