SUNRPC: Fix a slow server-side memory leak with RPC-over-TCP Jan Schunk reports that his small NFS servers suffer from memory exhaustion after just a few days. A bisect shows that commit e18e157bb5c8 ("SUNRPC: Send RPC message on TCP with a single sock_sendmsg() call") is the first bad commit. That commit assumed that sock_sendmsg() releases all the pages in the underlying bio_vec array, but the reality is that it doesn't. svc_xprt_release() releases the rqst's response pages, but the record marker page fragment isn't one of those, so it is never released. This is a narrow fix that can be applied to stable kernels. A more extensive fix is in the works. SUNRPC: remove printk when back channel request not found If the client interface is down, or there is a network partition between the client and server that prevents the callback request to reach the client, TCP on the server will keep re-transmitting the callback for about ~9 minutes before giving up and closing the connection. If the connection between the client and the server is re-established before the connection is closed and after the callback timed out (9 secs) then the re-transmitted callback request will arrive at the client. When the server receives the reply of the callback, receive_cb_reply prints the "Got unrecognized reply..." message in the system log since the callback request was already removed from the server xprt's recv_queue. Even though this scenario has no effect on the server operation, a malfunctioning or malicious client can fill up the server's system log. SUNRPC: Reduce thread wake-up rate when receiving large RPC messages With large NFS WRITE requests on TCP, I measured 5-10 thread wake- ups to receive each request. This is because the socket layer calls ->sk_data_ready() frequently, and each call triggers a thread wake-up. Each recvmsg() seems to pull in less than 100KB. Have the socket layer hold ->sk_data_ready() calls until the full incoming message has arrived to reduce the wake-up rate. Signed-off-by: Chuck Lever <chuck.lever@oracle.com>

SUNRPC: Convert svc_udp_sendto() to use the per-socket bio_vec array Commit da1661b93bf4 ("SUNRPC: Teach server to use xprt_sock_sendmsg for socket sends") modified svc_udp_sendto() to use xprt_sock_sendmsg() because we originally believed xprt_sock_sendmsg() would be needed for TLS support. That does not actually appear to be the case. In addition, the linkage between the client and server send code has been a bit of a maintenance headache because of the distinct ways that the client and server handle memory allocation. Going forward, eventually the XDR layer will deal with its buffers in the form of bio_vec arrays, so convert this function accordingly. Signed-off-by: Chuck Lever <chuck.lever@oracle.com>

SUNRPC: Send RPC message on TCP with a single sock_sendmsg() call There is now enough infrastructure in place to combine the stream record marker into the biovec array used to send each outgoing RPC message on TCP. The whole message can be more efficiently sent with a single call to sock_sendmsg() using a bio_vec iterator. Note that this also helps with RPC-with-TLS: the TLS implementation can now clearly see where the upper layer message boundaries are. Before, it would send each component of the xdr_buf (record marker, head, page payload, tail) in separate TLS records. SUNRPC: always free ctxt when freeing deferred request Since the ->xprt_ctxt pointer was added to svc_deferred_req, it has not been sufficient to use kfree() to free a deferred request. We may need to free the ctxt as well. As freeing the ctxt is all that ->xpo_release_rqst() does, we repurpose it to explicit do that even when the ctxt is not stored in an rqst. So we now have ->xpo_release_ctxt() which is given an xprt and a ctxt, which may have been taken either from an rqst or from a dreq. The caller is now responsible for clearing that pointer after the call to ->xpo_release_ctxt. We also clear dr->xprt_ctxt when the ctxt is moved into a new rqst when revisiting a deferred request. This ensures there is only one pointer to the ctxt, so the risk of double freeing in future is reduced. The new code in svc_xprt_release which releases both the ctxt and any rq_deferred depends on this. The negative is first type promoted to u32 so it becomes a high positive then it is promoted to long and it stays positive. Fix this by casting "err" directly to long. SUNRPC: Move svc_xprt_received() call sites Currently, XPT_BUSY is not cleared until xpo_recvfrom returns. That effectively blocks the receipt and handling of the next RPC message until the current one has been taken off the transport. This strict ordering is a requirement for socket transports. For our kernel RPC/RDMA transport implementation, however, dequeuing an ingress message is nothing more than a list_del(). The transport can safely be marked un-busy as soon as that is done. To keep the changes simpler, this patch just moves the svc_xprt_received() call site from svc_handle_xprt() into the transports, so that the actual optimization can be done in a subsequent patch. SUNRPC: Fix NFS READs that start at non-page-aligned offsets Anj Duvnjak reports that the Kodi.tv NFS client is not able to read video files from a v5.10.11 Linux NFS server. The new sendpage-based TCP sendto logic was not attentive to non- zero page_base values. nfsd_splice_read() sets that field when a READ payload starts in the middle of a page. The Linux NFS client rarely emits an NFS READ that is not page- aligned. All of my testing so far has been with Linux clients, so I missed this one. Reported-by: A. SUNRPC: Handle TCP socket sends with kernel_sendpage() again Daire Byrne reports a ~50% aggregrate throughput regression on his Linux NFS server after commit da1661b93bf4 ("SUNRPC: Teach server to use xprt_sock_sendmsg for socket sends"), which replaced kernel_send_page() calls in NFSD's socket send path with calls to sock_sendmsg() using iov_iter. Investigation showed that tcp_sendmsg() was not using zero-copy to send the xdr_buf's bvec pages, but instead was relying on memcpy. This means copying every byte of a large NFS READ payload. It looks like TLS sockets do indeed support a ->sendpage method, so it's really not necessary to use xprt_sock_sendmsg() to support TLS fully on the server. A mechanical reversion of da1661b93bf4 is not possible at this point, but we can re-implement the server's TCP socket sendmsg path using kernel_sendpage(). SUNRPC: Refactor svc_recvfrom() This function is not currently "generic" so remove the documenting comment and rename it appropriately. Its internals are converted to use bio_vecs for reading from the transport socket. In existing typical sunrpc uses of bio_vecs, the bio_vec array is allocated dynamically. Here, instead, an array of bio_vecs is added to svc_rqst. The lifetime of this array can be greater than one call to xpo_recvfrom(): - Multiple calls to xpo_recvfrom() might be needed to read an RPC message completely. - At some later point, rq_arg.bvecs will point to this array and it will carry the received message into svc_process(). I also expect that a future optimization will remove either the rq_vec or rq_pages array in favor of rq_bvec, thus conserving the size of struct svc_rqst. SUNRPC: Move xpt_mutex into socket xpo_sendto methods It appears that the RPC/RDMA transport does not need serialization of calls to its xpo_sendto method. Move the mutex into the socket methods that still need that serialization. Tail latencies are unambiguously better with this patch applied. fio randrw 8KB 70/30 on NFSv3, smaller numbers are better: clat percentiles (usec): With xpt_mutex: r | 99.99th=[ 8848] w | 99.99th=[ 9634] Without xpt_mutex: r | 99.99th=[ 8586] w | 99.99th=[ 8979] Serializing the construction of RPC/RDMA transport headers is not really necessary at this point, because the Linux NFS server implementation never changes its credit grant on a connection. If that should change, then svc_rdma_sendto will need to serialize access to the transport's credit grant fields. nfsd: Fix NFSv4 READ on RDMA when using readv svcrdma expects that the payload falls precisely into the xdr_buf page vector. This does not seem to be the case for nfsd4_encode_readv(). This code is called only when fops->splice_read is missing or when RQ_SPLICE_OK is clear, so it's not a noticeable problem in many common cases. Add new transport method: ->xpo_read_payload so that when a READ payload does not fit exactly in rq_res's page vector, the XDR encoder can inform the RPC transport exactly where that payload is, without the payload's XDR pad. That way, when a Write chunk is present, the transport knows what byte range in the Reply message is supposed to be matched with the chunk. Note that the Linux NFS server implementation of NFS/RDMA can currently handle only one Write chunk per RPC-over-RDMA message. This simplifies the implementation of this fix. sock: Make sock->sk_stamp thread-safe Al Viro mentioned (Message-ID <20170626041334.GZ10672@ZenIV.linux.org.uk>) that there is probably a race condition lurking in accesses of sk_stamp on 32-bit machines. sock->sk_stamp is of type ktime_t which is always an s64. On a 32 bit architecture, we might run into situations of unsafe access as the access to the field becomes non atomic. Use seqlocks for synchronization. This allows us to avoid using spinlocks for readers as readers do not need mutual exclusion. Another approach to solve this is to require sk_lock for all modifications of the timestamps. The current approach allows for timestamps to have their own lock: sk_stamp_lock. This allows for the patch to not compete with already existing critical sections, and side effects are limited to the paths in the patch. The addition of the new field maintains the data locality optimizations from commit 9115e8cd2a0c ("net: reorganize struct sock for better data locality") Note that all the instances of the sk_stamp accesses are either through the ioctl or the syscall recvmsg. sunrpc: use-after-free in svc_process_common() if node have NFSv41+ mounts inside several net namespaces it can lead to use-after-free in svc_process_common() svc_process_common() /* Setup reply header */ rqstp->rq_xprt->xpt_ops->xpo_prep_reply_hdr(rqstp); <<< HERE svc_process_common() can use incorrect rqstp->rq_xprt, its caller function bc_svc_process() takes it from serv->sv_bc_xprt. The problem is that serv is global structure but sv_bc_xprt is assigned per-netnamespace. According to Trond, the whole "let's set up rqstp->rq_xprt for the back channel" is nothing but a giant hack in order to work around the fact that svc_process_common() uses it to find the xpt_ops, and perform a couple of (meaningless for the back channel) tests of xpt_flags. All we really need in svc_process_common() is to be able to run rqstp->rq_xprt->xpt_ops->xpo_prep_reply_hdr() Bruce J Fields points that this xpo_prep_reply_hdr() call is an awfully roundabout way just to do "svc_putnl(resv, 0);" in the tcp case. This patch does not initialiuze rqstp->rq_xprt in bc_svc_process(), now it calls svc_process_common() with rqstp->rq_xprt = NULL. To adjust reply header svc_process_common() just check rqstp->rq_prot and calls svc_tcp_prep_reply_hdr() for tcp case. To handle rqstp->rq_xprt = NULL case in functions called from svc_process_common() patch intruduces net namespace pointer svc_rqst->rq_bc_net and adjust SVC_NET() definition. Some other function was also adopted to properly handle described case. iov_iter: Separate type from direction and use accessor functions In the iov_iter struct, separate the iterator type from the iterator direction and use accessor functions to access them in most places. Convert a bunch of places to use switch-statements to access them rather then chains of bitwise-AND statements. This makes it easier to add further iterator types. Also, this can be more efficient as to implement a switch of small contiguous integers, the compiler can use ~50% fewer compare instructions than it has to use bitwise-and instructions. Further, cease passing the iterator type into the iterator setup function. The iterator function can set that itself. Only the direction is required. sunrpc: Save remote presentation address in svc_xprt for trace events TP_printk defines a format string that is passed to user space for converting raw trace event records to something human-readable. My user space's printf (Oracle Linux 7), however, does not have a %pI format specifier. The result is that what is supposed to be an IP address in the output of "trace-cmd report" is just a string that says the field couldn't be displayed. To fix this, adopt the same approach as the client: maintain a pre- formated presentation address for occasions when %pI is not available. The location of the trace_svc_send trace point is adjusted so that rqst->rq_xprt is not NULL when the trace event is recorded. Signed-off-by: Chuck Lever <chuck.lever@oracle.com> Signed-off-by: J. net: make getname() functions return length rather than use int* parameter Changes since v1: Added changes in these files: drivers/infiniband/hw/usnic/usnic_transport.c drivers/staging/lustre/lnet/lnet/lib-socket.c drivers/target/iscsi/iscsi_target_login.c drivers/vhost/net.c fs/dlm/lowcomms.c fs/ocfs2/cluster/tcp.c security/tomoyo/network.c Before: All these functions either return a negative error indicator, or store length of sockaddr into "int *socklen" parameter and return zero on success. "int *socklen" parameter is awkward. For example, if caller does not care, it still needs to provide on-stack storage for the value it does not need. None of the many FOO_getname() functions of various protocols ever used old value of *socklen. They always just overwrite it. This change drops this parameter, and makes all these functions, on success, return length of sockaddr. It's always >= 0 and can be differentiated from an error. Tests in callers are changed from "if (err)" to "if (err < 0)", where needed. rpc_sockname() lost "int buflen" parameter, since its only use was to be passed to kernel_getsockname() as &buflen and subsequently not used in any way. net: sunrpc: svcsock: fix NULL-pointer exception While running nfs/connectathon tests kernel NULL-pointer exception has been observed due to races in svcsock.c. Race is appear when kernel accepts connection by kernel_accept (which creates new socket) and start queuing ingress packets to new socket. This happens in ksoftirq context which could run concurrently on a different core while new socket setup is not done yet. The fix is to re-order socket user data init sequence and add write/read barrier calls to be sure that we got proper values for callback pointers before actually calling them. Test results: nfs/connectathon reports '0' failed tests for about 200+ iterations. lib/vsprintf.c: remove %Z support Now that %z is standartised in C99 there is no reason to support %Z. Unlike %L it doesn't even make format strings smaller. Use BUILD_BUG_ON in a couple ATM drivers. In case anyone didn't notice lib/vsprintf.o is about half of SLUB which is in my opinion is quite an achievement. Hopefully this patch inspires someone else to trim vsprintf.c more. sunrpc: flag transports as having congestion control NFSv4 requires a transport protocol with congestion control in most cases. On an IP network, that means that NFSv4 over UDP should be forbidden. The situation with RDMA is a bit more nuanced, but most RDMA transports are suitable for this. For now, we assume that all RDMA transports are suitable, but we may need to revise that at some point. ktime: Get rid of the union ktime is a union because the initial implementation stored the time in scalar nanoseconds on 64 bit machine and in a endianess optimized timespec variant for 32bit machines. The Y2038 cleanup removed the timespec variant and switched everything to scalar nanoseconds. The union remained, but become completely pointless. Get rid of the union and just keep ktime_t as simple typedef of type s64. The conversion was done with coccinelle and some manual mopping up. udp: do fwd memory scheduling on dequeue A new argument is added to __skb_recv_datagram to provide an explicit skb destructor, invoked under the receive queue lock. The UDP protocol uses such argument to perform memory reclaiming on dequeue, so that the UDP protocol does not set anymore skb->desctructor. Instead explicit memory reclaiming is performed at close() time and when skbs are removed from the receive queue. The in kernel UDP protocol users now need to call a skb_recv_udp() variant instead of skb_recv_datagram() to properly perform memory accounting on dequeue. Overall, this allows acquiring only once the receive queue lock on dequeue. Tested using pktgen with random src port, 64 bytes packet, wire-speed on a 10G link as sender and udp_sink as the receiver, using an l4 tuple rxhash to stress the contention, and one or more udp_sink instances with reuseport. nr sinks vanilla patched 1 440 560 3 2150 2300 6 3650 3800 9 4450 4600 12 6250 6450 v1 -> v2: - do rmem and allocated memory scheduling under the receive lock - do bulk scheduling in first_packet_length() and in udp_destruct_sock() - avoid the typdef for the dequeue callback Suggested-by: Eric Dumazet <edumazet@google.com> Acked-by: Hannes Frederic Sowa <hannes@stressinduktion.org> Signed-off-by: Paolo Abeni <pabeni@redhat.com> Acked-by: Eric Dumazet <edumazet@google.com> Signed-off-by: David S. The culprit appears to be the test at the end of svc_tcp_init, which checks if the newly created socket is in the TCP_ESTABLISHED state, and immediately closes it if not. The evidence appears to suggest that the socket might still be in the SYN_RECV state at this time. The fix is to check for both states, and then to add a check in svc_tcp_state_change() to ensure we don't close the socket when it transitions into TCP_ESTABLISHED. SUNRPC: Change TCP socket space reservation The current server rpc tcp code attempts to predict how much writeable socket space will be available to a given RPC call before accepting it for processing. On a 40GigE network, we've found this throttles individual clients long before the network or disk is saturated. The server may handle more clients easily, but the bandwidth of individual clients is still artificially limited. Instead of trying (and failing) to predict how much writeable socket space will be available to the RPC call, just fall back to the simple model of deferring processing until the socket is uncongested. This may increase the risk of fast clients starving slower clients; in such cases, the previous patch allows setting a hard per-connection limit. NFSD: Ignore client's source port on RDMA transports An NFS/RDMA client's source port is meaningless for RDMA transports. The transport layer typically sets the source port value on the connection to a random ephemeral port. Currently, NFS server administrators must specify the "insecure" export option to enable clients to access exports via RDMA. But this means NFS clients can access such an export via IP using an ephemeral port, which may not be desirable. This patch eliminates the need to specify the "insecure" export option to allow NFS/RDMA clients access to an export. net: Fix use after free by removing length arg from sk_data_ready callbacks. Several spots in the kernel perform a sequence like: skb_queue_tail(&sk->s_receive_queue, skb); sk->sk_data_ready(sk, skb->len); But at the moment we place the SKB onto the socket receive queue it can be consumed and freed up. So this skb->len access is potentially to freed up memory. Furthermore, the skb->len can be modified by the consumer so it is possible that the value isn't accurate. And finally, no actual implementation of this callback actually uses the length argument. And since nobody actually cared about it's value, lots of call sites pass arbitrary values in such as '0' and even '1'. So just remove the length argument from the callback, that way there is no confusion whatsoever and all of these use-after-free cases get fixed as a side effect. Based upon a patch by Eric Dumazet and his suggestion to audit this issue tree-wide. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

nfsd: check passed socket's net matches NFSd superblock's one There could be a case, when NFSd file system is mounted in network, different to socket's one, like below: "ip netns exec" creates new network and mount namespace, which duplicates NFSd mount point, created in init_net context. And thus NFS server stop in nested network context leads to RPCBIND client destruction in init_net. Then, on NFSd start in nested network context, rpc.nfsd process creates socket in nested net and passes it into "write_ports", which leads to RPCBIND sockets creation in init_net context because of the same reason (NFSd monut point was created in init_net context). An attempt to register passed socket in nested net leads to panic, because no RPCBIND client present in nexted network namespace. This patch add check that passed socket's net matches NFSd superblock's one. And returns -EINVAL error to user psace otherwise. v2: Put socket on exit. ipv6: make lookups simpler and faster TCP listener refactoring, part 4 : To speed up inet lookups, we moved IPv4 addresses from inet to struct sock_common Now is time to do the same for IPv6, because it permits us to have fast lookups for all kind of sockets, including upcoming SYN_RECV. Getting IPv6 addresses in TCP lookups currently requires two extra cache lines, plus a dereference (and memory stall). inet6_sk(sk) does the dereference of inet_sk(__sk)->pinet6 This patch is way bigger than its IPv4 counter part, because for IPv4, we could add aliases (inet_daddr, inet_rcv_saddr), while on IPv6, it's not doable easily. inet6_sk(sk)->daddr becomes sk->sk_v6_daddr inet6_sk(sk)->rcv_saddr becomes sk->sk_v6_rcv_saddr And timewait socket also have tw->tw_v6_daddr & tw->tw_v6_rcv_saddr at the same offset. We get rid of INET6_TW_MATCH() as INET6_MATCH() is now the generic macro. Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <edumazet@google.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

NFSD/sunrpc: avoid deadlock on TCP connection due to memory pressure. Since we enabled auto-tuning for sunrpc TCP connections we do not guarantee that there is enough write-space on each connection to queue a reply. If memory pressure causes the window to shrink too small, the request throttling in sunrpc/svc will not accept any requests so no more requests will be handled. Even when pressure decreases the window will not grow again until data is sent on the connection. This means we get a deadlock: no requests will be handled until there is more space, and no space will be allocated until a request is handled. This can be simulated by modifying svc_tcp_has_wspace to inflate the number of byte required and removing the 'svc_sock_setbufsize' calls in svc_setup_socket. I found that multiplying by 16 was enough to make the requirement exceed the default allocation. With this modification in place: mount -o vers=3,proto=tcp 127.0.0.1:/home /mnt would block and eventually time out because the nfs server could not accept any requests. This patch relaxes the request throttling to always allow at least one request through per connection. It does this by checking both sk_stream_min_wspace() and xprt->xpt_reserved are zero. The first is zero when the TCP transmit queue is empty. The second is zero when there are no RPC requests being processed. When both of these are zero the socket is idle and so one more request can safely be allowed through. Applying this patch allows the above mount command to succeed cleanly. Tracing shows that the allocated write buffer space quickly grows and after a few requests are handled, the extra tests are no longer needed to permit further requests to be processed. The main purpose of request throttling is to handle the case when one client is slow at collecting replies and the send queue gets full of replies that the client hasn't acknowledged (at the TCP level) yet. As we only change behaviour when the send queue is empty this main purpose is still preserved. Reported-by: Ben Myers <bpm@sgi.com> Signed-off-by: NeilBrown <neilb@suse.de> Signed-off-by: J. svcrpc: don't error out on small tcp fragment Though clients we care about mostly don't do this, it is possible for rpc requests to be sent in multiple fragments. Here we have a sanity check to ensure that the final received rpc isn't too small--except that the number we're actually checking is the length of just the final fragment, not of the whole rpc. svcrpc: support multiple-fragment rpc's Over TCP, RPC's are preceded by a single 4-byte field telling you how long the rpc is (in bytes). The spec also allows you to send an RPC in multiple such records (the high bit of the length field is used to tell you whether this is the final record). We've survived for years without supporting this because in practice the clients we care about don't use it. But the userland rpc libraries do, and every now and then an experimental client will run into this. (Most recently I noticed it while trying to write a pynfs check.) sunrpc: centralise most calls to svc_xprt_received svc_xprt_received must be called when ->xpo_recvfrom has finished receiving a message, so that the XPT_BUSY flag will be cleared and if necessary, requeued for further work. This call is currently made in each ->xpo_recvfrom function, often from multiple different points. In each case it is the earliest point on a particular path where it is known that the protection provided by XPT_BUSY is no longer needed. However there are (still) some error paths which do not call svc_xprt_received, and requiring each ->xpo_recvfrom to make the call does not encourage robustness. So: move the svc_xprt_received call to be made just after the call to ->xpo_recvfrom(), and move it of the various ->xpo_recvfrom methods. This means that it may not be called at the earliest possible instant, but this is unlikely to be a measurable performance issue. Note that there are still other calls to svc_xprt_received as it is also needed when an xprt is newly created. Signed-off-by: NeilBrown <neilb@suse.de> Signed-off-by: J. nfsd: ensure sockets are closed on error One the changes in commit d7979ae4a "svc: Move close processing to a single place" is: err_delete: - svc_delete_socket(svsk); + set_bit(SK_CLOSE, &svsk->sk_flags); return -EAGAIN; This is insufficient. The recvfrom methods must always call svc_xprt_received on completion so that the socket gets re-queued if there is any more work to do. This particular path did not make that call because it actually destroyed the svsk, making requeue pointless. When the svc_delete_socket was change to just set a bit, we should have added a call to svc_xprt_received, This is the problem that b0401d7253 attempted to fix, incorrectly. Signed-off-by: J. SUNRPC: Fix the TCP server's send buffer accounting Currently, the sunrpc server is refusing to allow us to process new RPC calls if the TCP send buffer is 2/3 full, even if we do actually have enough free space to guarantee that we can send another request. The following patch fixes svc_tcp_has_wspace() so that we only stop processing requests if we know that the socket buffer cannot possibly fit another reply. It also fixes the tcp write_space() callback so that we only clear the SOCK_NOSPACE flag when the TCP send buffer is less than 2/3 full. This should ensure that the send window will grow as per the standard TCP socket code. Signed-off-by: Trond Myklebust <Trond.Myklebust@netapp.com> Signed-off-by: J. SUNRPC: Fix error return value of svc_addr_len() The svc_addr_len() helper function returns -EAFNOSUPPORT if it doesn't recognize the address family of the passed-in socket address. However, the return type of this function is size_t, which means -EAFNOSUPPORT is turned into a very large positive value in this case. The check in svc_udp_recvfrom() to see if the return value is less than zero therefore won't work at all. Additionally, handle_connect_req() passes this value directly to memset(). This could cause memset() to clobber a large chunk of memory if svc_addr_len() has returned an error. Currently the address family of these addresses, however, is known to be supported long before handle_connect_req() is called, so this isn't a real risk. Change the error return value of svc_addr_len() to zero, which fits in the range of size_t, and is safer to pass to memset() directly. SUNRPC: Pass a family argument to svc_register() The sv_family field is going away. Instead of using sv_family, have the svc_register() function take a protocol family argument. Since this argument represents a protocol family, and not an address family, this argument takes an int, as this is what is passed to sock_create_kern(). Also make sure svc_register's helpers are checking for PF_FOO instead of AF_FOO. The value of [AP]F_FOO are equivalent; this is simply a symbolic change to reflect the semantics of the value stored in that variable. sock_create_kern() should return EPFNOSUPPORT if the passed-in protocol family isn't supported, but it uses EAFNOSUPPORT for this case. We will stick with that tradition here, as svc_register() is called by the RPC server in the same path as sock_create_kern(). svcrpc: take advantage of tcp autotuning Allow the NFSv4 server to make use of TCP autotuning behaviour, which was previously disabled by setting the sk_userlocks variable. Set the receive buffers to be big enough to receive the whole RPC request, and set this for the listening socket, not the accept socket. Remove the code that readjusts the receive/send buffer sizes for the accepted socket. Previously this code was used to influence the TCP window management behaviour, which is no longer needed when autotuning is enabled. This can improve IO bandwidth on networks with high bandwidth-delay products, where a large tcp window is required. It also simplifies performance tuning, since getting adequate tcp buffers previously required increasing the number of nfsd threads. SUNRPC: Set V6ONLY socket option for RPC listener sockets My plan is to use an AF_INET listener on systems that support only IPv4, and an AF_INET6 listener on systems that can support IPv6. Incoming IPv4 packets will be posted to an AF_INET6 listener with a mapped IPv4 address. Max Matveev <makc@sgi.com> says: Creating a single listener can be dangerous - if net.ipv6.bindv6only is enabled then it's possible to create another listener in v4 namespace on the same port and steal the traffic from the "unifed" listener. You need to disable V6ONLY explicitly via a sockopt to stop that. Set appropriate socket option on RPC server listener sockets to prevent this. Wrap buffers used for rpc debug printks into RPC_IFDEBUG Sorry for the noise, but here's the v3 of this compilation fix :) There are some places, which declare the char buf[...] on the stack to push it later into dprintk(). Since the dprintk sometimes (if the CONFIG_SYSCTL=n) becomes an empty do { } while (0) stub, these buffers cause gcc to produce appropriate warnings. Wrap these buffers with RPC_IFDEBUG macro, as Trond proposed, to compile them out when not needed. Signed-off-by: Pavel Emelyanov <xemul@openvz.org> Acked-by: J. svc: Move the sockaddr information to svc_xprt This patch moves the transport sockaddr to the svc_xprt structure. Convenience functions are added to set and get the local and remote addresses of a transport from the transport provider as well as determine the length of a sockaddr. A transport is responsible for setting the xpt_local and xpt_remote addresses in the svc_xprt structure as part of transport creation and xpo_accept processing. This cannot be done in a generic way and in fact varies between TCP, UDP and RDMA. A set of xpo_ functions (e.g. getlocalname, getremotename) could have been added but this would have resulted in additional caching and copying of the addresses around. Note that the xpt_local address should also be set on listening endpoints; for TCP/RDMA this is done as part of endpoint creation. For connected transports like TCP and RDMA, the addresses never change and can be set once and copied into the rqstp structure for each request. For UDP, however, the local and remote addresses may change for each request. In this case, the address information is obtained from the UDP recvmsg info and copied into the rqstp structure from there. A svc_xprt_local_port function was also added that returns the local port given a transport. This is used by svc_create_xprt when returning the port associated with a newly created transport, and later when creating a generic find transport service to check if a service is already listening on a given port. svc: Add xpo_accept transport function Previously, the accept logic looked into the socket state to determine whether to call accept or recv when data-ready was indicated on an endpoint. Since some transports don't use sockets, this logic now uses a flag bit (SK_LISTENER) to identify listening endpoints. A transport function (xpo_accept) allows each transport to define its own accept processing. A transport's initialization logic is reponsible for setting the SK_LISTENER bit. I didn't see any way to do this in transport independent logic since the passive side of a UDP connection doesn't listen and always recv's. In the svc_recv function, if the SK_LISTENER bit is set, the transport xpo_accept function is called to handle accept processing. Note that all functions are defined even if they don't make sense for a given transport. For example, accept doesn't mean anything for UDP. The function is defined anyway and bug checks if called. The UDP transport should never set the SK_LISTENER bit. rpc: fix garbage in printk in svc_tcp_accept() we upgraded the kernel of a nfs-server from 2.6.17.11 to 2.6.22.6. Since then we get the message lockd: too many open TCP sockets, consider increasing the number of nfsd threads lockd: last TCP connect from ^\\236^\É^D These random characters in the second line are caused by a bug in svc_tcp_accept. (Note: there are two previous __svc_print_addr(sin, buf, sizeof(buf)) calls in this function, either of which would initialize buf correctly; but both are inside "if"'s and are not necessarily executed. This is less obvious in the second case, which is inside a dprintk(), which is a macro which expands to an if statement.) Correctly close old nfsd/lockd sockets. Commit aaf68cfbf2241d24d46583423f6bff5c47e088b3 added a bias to sk_inuse, so this test for an unused socket now fails. So no sockets get closed because they are old (they might get closed if the client closed them). This bug has existed since 2.6.21-rc1. Thanks to Wolfgang Walter for finding and reporting the bug. knfsd: simplify a 'while' condition in svcsock.c This while loop has an overly complex condition, which performs a couple of assignments. This hurts readability. We don't really need a loop at all. We can just return -EAGAIN and (providing we set SK_DATA), the function will be called again. So discard the loop, make the complex conditional become a few clear function calls, and hopefully improve readability. [NET]: convert network timestamps to ktime_t We currently use a special structure (struct skb_timeval) and plain 'struct timeval' to store packet timestamps in sk_buffs and struct sock. This has some drawbacks : - Fixed resolution of micro second. - Waste of space on 64bit platforms where sizeof(struct timeval)=16 I suggest using ktime_t that is a nice abstraction of high resolution time services, currently capable of nanosecond resolution. As sizeof(ktime_t) is 8 bytes, using ktime_t in 'struct sock' permits a 8 byte shrink of this structure on 64bit architectures. Some other structures also benefit from this size reduction (struct ipq in ipv4/ip_fragment.c, struct frag_queue in ipv6/reassembly.c, ...) Once this ktime infrastructure adopted, we can more easily provide nanosecond resolution on top of it. (ioctl SIOCGSTAMPNS and/or SO_TIMESTAMPNS/SCM_TIMESTAMPNS) Note : this patch includes a bug correction in compat_sock_get_timestamp() where a "err = 0;" was missing (so this syscall returned -ENOENT instead of 0) Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <dada1@cosmosbay.com> CC: Stephen Hemminger <shemminger@linux-foundation.org> CC: John find <linux.kernel@free.fr> Signed-off-by: David S. [PATCH] knfsd: fix recently introduced problem with shutting down a busy NFS server When the last thread of nfsd exits, it shuts down all related sockets. It currently uses svc_close_socket to do this, but that only is immediately effective if the socket is not SK_BUSY. If the socket is busy - i.e. if a request has arrived that has not yet been processes - svc_close_socket is not effective and the shutdown process spins. So create a new svc_force_close_socket which removes the SK_BUSY flag is set and then calls svc_close_socket. Also change some open-codes loops in svc_destroy to use list_for_each_entry_safe. [PATCH] knfsd: use recv_msg to get peer address for NFSD instead of code-copying The sunrpc server code needs to know the source and destination address for UDP packets so it can reply properly. It currently copies code out of the network stack to pick the pieces out of the skb. This is ugly and causes compile problems with the IPv6 stuff. So, rip that out and use recv_msg instead. This is a much cleaner interface, but has a slight cost in that the checksum is now checked before the copy, so we don't benefit from doing both at the same time. This can probably be fixed. [PATCH] knfsd: fix a race in closing NFSd connections If you lose this race, it can iput a socket inode twice and you get a BUG in fs/inode.c When I added the option for user-space to close a socket, I added some cruft to svc_delete_socket so that I could call that function when closing a socket per user-space request. This was the wrong thing to do. I should have just set SK_CLOSE and let normal mechanisms do the work. Not only wrong, but buggy. The locking is all wrong and it openned up a race where-by a socket could be closed twice. So this patch: Introduces svc_close_socket which sets SK_CLOSE then either leave the close up to a thread, or calls svc_delete_socket if it can get SK_BUSY. Adds a bias to sk_busy which is removed when SK_DEAD is set, This avoid races around shutting down the socket. Changes several 'spin_lock' to 'spin_lock_bh' where the _bh was missing. [PATCH] knfsd: fix an NFSD bug with full sized, non-page-aligned reads NFSd assumes that largest number of pages that will be needed for a request+response is 2+N where N pages is the size of the largest permitted read/write request. The '2' are 1 for the non-data part of the request, and 1 for the non-data part of the reply. However, when a read request is not page-aligned, and we choose to use ->sendfile to send it directly from the page cache, we may need N+1 pages to hold the whole reply. This can overflow and array and cause an Oops. This patch increases size of the array for holding pages by one and makes sure that entry is NULL when it is not in use. [PATCH] sunrpc: fix refcounting problems in rpc servers A recent patch fixed a problem which would occur when the refcount on an auth_domain reached zero. This problem has not been reported in practice despite existing in two major kernel releases because the refcount can never reach zero. This patch fixes the problems that stop the refcount reaching zero. 1/ We were adding to the refcount when inserting in the hash table, but only removing from the hashtable when the refcount reached zero. Obviously it never would. So don't count the implied reference of being in the hash table. 2/ There are two paths on which a socket can be destroyed. One called svcauth_unix_info_release(). The other didn't. So when the other was taken, we can lose a reference to an ip_map which in-turn holds a reference to an auth_domain So unify the exit paths into svc_sock_put. This highlights the fact that svc_delete_socket has slightly odd semantics - it does not drop a reference but probably should. Fixing this need a bit more thought and testing. [PATCH] knfsd: fix race that can disable NFS server This patch is suitable for just about any 2.6 kernel. It should go in 2.6.19 and 2.6.18.2 and possible even the .17 and .16 stable series. This is a long standing bug that seems to have only recently become apparent, presumably due to increasing use of NFS over TCP - many distros seem to be making it the default. The SK_CONN bit gets set when a listening socket may be ready for an accept, just as SK_DATA is set when data may be available. It is entirely possible for svc_tcp_accept to be called with neither of these set. It doesn't happen often but there is a small race in svc_sock_enqueue as SK_CONN and SK_DATA are tested outside the spin_lock. They could be cleared immediately after the test and before the lock is gained. This normally shouldn't be a problem. The sockets are non-blocking so trying to read() or accept() when ther is nothing to do is not a problem. However: svc_tcp_recvfrom makes the decision "Should I accept() or should I read()" based on whether SK_CONN is set or not. This usually works but is not safe. The decision should be based on whether it is a TCP_LISTEN socket or a TCP_CONNECTED socket. [PATCH] knfsd: tidy up up meaning of 'buffer size' in nfsd/sunrpc There is some confusion about the meaning of 'bufsz' for a sunrpc server. In some cases it is the largest message that can be sent or received. In other cases it is the largest 'payload' that can be included in a NFS message. In either case, it is not possible for both the request and the reply to be this large. One of the request or reply may only be one page long, which fits nicely with NFS. So we remove 'bufsz' and replace it with two numbers: 'max_payload' and 'max_mesg'. Max_payload is the size that the server requests. It is used by the server to check the max size allowed on a particular connection: depending on the protocol a lower limit might be used. max_mesg is the largest single message that can be sent or received. It is calculated as the max_payload, rounded up to a multiple of PAGE_SIZE, and with PAGE_SIZE added to overhead. Only one of the request and reply may be this size. The other must be at most one page. Cc: Greg Banks <gnb@sgi.com> Cc: "J. [PATCH] knfsd: knfsd: cache ipmap per TCP socket Speed up high call-rate workloads by caching the struct ip_map for the peer on the connected struct svc_sock instead of looking it up in the ip_map cache hashtable on every call. This helps workloads using AUTH_SYS authentication over TCP. Testing was on a 4 CPU 4 NIC Altix using 4 IRIX clients, each with 16 synthetic client threads simulating an rsync (i.e. recursive directory listing) workload reading from an i386 RH9 install image (161480 regular files in 10841 directories) on the server. That tree is small enough to fill in the server's RAM so no disk traffic was involved. This setup gives a sustained call rate in excess of 60000 calls/sec before being CPU-bound on the server. Profiling showed strcmp(), called from ip_map_match(), was taking 4.8% of each CPU, and ip_map_lookup() was taking 2.9%. This patch drops both contribution into the profile noise. Note that the above result overstates this value of this patch for most workloads. The synthetic clients are all using separate IP addresses, so there are 64 entries in the ip_map cache hash. Because the kernel measured contained the bug fixed in commit commit 1f1e030bf75774b6a283518e1534d598e14147d4 and was running on 64bit little-endian machine, probably all of those 64 entries were on a single chain, thus increasing the cost of ip_map_lookup(). With a modern kernel you would need more clients to see the same amount of performance improvement. This patch has helped to scale knfsd to handle a deployment with 2000 NFS clients. [PATCH] knfsd: Avoid excess stack usage in svc_tcp_recvfrom .. by allocating the array of 'kvec' in 'struct svc_rqst'. As we plan to increase RPCSVC_MAXPAGES from 8 upto 256, we can no longer allocate an array of this size on the stack. So we allocate it in 'struct svc_rqst'. However svc_rqst contains (indirectly) an array of the same type and size (actually several, but they are in a union). So rather than waste space, we move those arrays out of the separately allocated union and into svc_rqst to share with the kvec moved out of svc_tcp_recvfrom (various arrays are used at different times, so there is no conflict). [PATCH] knfsd: Replace two page lists in struct svc_rqst with one We are planning to increase RPCSVC_MAXPAGES from about 8 to about 256. This means we need to be a bit careful about arrays of size RPCSVC_MAXPAGES. struct svc_rqst contains two such arrays. However the there are never more that RPCSVC_MAXPAGES pages in the two arrays together, so only one array is needed. The two arrays are for the pages holding the request, and the pages holding the reply. Instead of two arrays, we can simply keep an index into where the first reply page is. This patch also removes a number of small inline functions that probably server to obscure what is going on rather than clarify it, and opencode the needed functionality. Also remove the 'rq_restailpage' variable as it is *always* 0. i.e. if the response 'xdr' structure has a non-empty tail it is always in the same pages as the head. check counters are initilised and incr properly check for consistant usage of ++ etc maybe extra some inlines for common approach general review Signed-off-by: Neil Brown <neilb@suse.de> Cc: Magnus Maatta <novell@kiruna.se> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

[PATCH] knfsd: call lockd_down when closing a socket via a write to nfsd/portlist The refcount that nfsd holds on lockd is based on the number of open sockets. [PATCH] knfsd: make rpc threads pools numa aware Actually implement multiple pools. On NUMA machines, allocate a svc_pool per NUMA node; on SMP a svc_pool per CPU; otherwise a single global pool. Enqueue sockets on the svc_pool corresponding to the CPU on which the socket bh is run (i.e. the NIC interrupt CPU). Threads have their cpu mask set to limit them to the CPUs in the svc_pool that owns them. This is the patch that allows an Altix to scale NFS traffic linearly beyond 4 CPUs and 4 NICs. [PATCH] knfsd: split svc_serv into pools Split out the list of idle threads and pending sockets from svc_serv into a new svc_pool structure, and allocate a fixed number (in this patch, 1) of pools per svc_serv. The new structure contains a lock which takes over several of the duties of svc_serv->sv_lock, which is now relegated to protecting only sv_tempsocks, sv_permsocks, and sv_tmpcnt in svc_serv. The point is to move the hottest fields out of svc_serv and into svc_pool, allowing a following patch to arrange for a svc_pool per NUMA node or per CPU. [PATCH] knfsd: move tempsock aging to a timer Following are 11 patches from Greg Banks which combine to make knfsd more Numa-aware. They reduce hitting on 'global' data structures, and create some data-structures that can be node-local. knfsd threads are bound to a particular node, and the thread to handle a new request is chosen from the threads that are attach to the node that received the interrupt. The distribution of threads across nodes can be controlled by a new file in the 'nfsd' filesystem, though the default approach of an even spread is probably fine for most sites. Some (old) numbers that show the efficacy of these patches: N == number of NICs == number of CPUs == nmber of clients. Number of NUMA nodes == N/2 N Throughput, MiB/s CPU usage, % (max=N*100) Before After Before After --- ------ ---- ----- ----- 4 312 435 350 228 6 500 656 501 418 8 562 804 690 589 This patch: Move the aging of RPC/TCP connection sockets from the main svc_recv() loop to a timer which uses a mark-and-sweep algorithm every 6 minutes. This reduces the amount of work that needs to be done in the main RPC loop and the length of time we need to hold the (effectively global) svc_serv->sv_lock. [PATCH] Keep nfsd from exiting when seeing recv() errors I submitted this one previously - svc_tcp_recvfrom currently returns any errors to the caller, including ECONNRESET and the like. This is something svc_recv isn't able to deal with: len = svsk->sk_recvfrom(rqstp); [...] if (len == 0 || len == -EAGAIN) { [...] return -EAGAIN; } [...] return len; The nfsd main loop will exit when it sees an error code other than EAGAIN. The following patch fixes this problem svc_recv is not equipped to deal with error codes other than EAGAIN, and will propagate anything else (such as ECONNRESET) up to nfsd, causing it to exit. [NET]: move struct proto_ops to const I noticed that some of 'struct proto_ops' used in the kernel may share a cache line used by locks or other heavily modified data. (default linker alignement is 32 bytes, and L1_CACHE_LINE is 64 or 128 at least) This patch makes sure a 'struct proto_ops' can be declared as const, so that all cpus can share all parts of it without false sharing. This is not mandatory : a driver can still use a read/write structure if it needs to (and eventually a __read_mostly) I made a global stubstitute to change all existing occurences to make them const. This should reduce the possibility of false sharing on SMP, and speedup some socket system calls. Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <dada1@cosmosbay.com> Signed-off-by: David S.
