Re-implement the nfc_llcp_find_local(). The current version does not grab the reference when getting the local from the linked list. For example, the llcp_sock_bind() gets the reference like below: // llcp_sock_bind() local = nfc_llcp_find_local(dev); // A ..... \ | raceable ..... / llcp_sock->local = nfc_llcp_local_get(local); // B There is an apparent race window that one can drop the reference and free the local object fetched in (A) before (B) gets the reference. 2. Some callers of the nfc_llcp_find_local() do not grab the reference at all. For example, the nfc_genl_llc_{{get/set}_params/sdreq} functions. We add the nfc_llcp_local_put() for them. Moreover, we add the necessary error handling function to put the reference. 3. Add the nfc_llcp_remove_local() helper. The local object is removed from the linked list in local_release() when all reference is gone. This patch removes it when nfc_llcp_unregister_device() is called. Therefore, every caller of nfc_llcp_find_local() will get a reference even when the nfc_llcp_unregister_device() is called. This promises no use-after-free for the local object is ever possible. nfc: fix memory leak of se_io context in nfc_genl_se_io The callback context for sending/receiving APDUs to/from the selected secure element is allocated inside nfc_genl_se_io and supposed to be eventually freed in se_io_cb callback function. However, there are several error paths where the bwi_timer is not charged to call se_io_cb later, and the cb_context is leaked. The patch proposes to free the cb_context explicitly on those error paths. At the moment we can't simply check 'dev->ops->se_io()' return value as it may be negative in both cases: when the timer was charged and was not. genetlink: start to validate reserved header bytes We had historically not checked that genlmsghdr.reserved is 0 on input which prevents us from using those precious bytes in the future. One use case would be to extend the cmd field, which is currently just 8 bits wide and 256 is not a lot of commands for some core families. To make sure that new families do the right thing by default put the onus of opting out of validation on existing families. NFC: netlink: fix sleep in atomic bug when firmware download timeout There are sleep in atomic bug that could cause kernel panic during firmware download process. The root cause is that nlmsg_new with GFP_KERNEL parameter is called in fw_dnld_timeout which is a timer handler. The call trace is shown below: BUG: sleeping function called from invalid context at include/linux/sched/mm.h:265 Call Trace: kmem_cache_alloc_node __alloc_skb nfc_genl_fw_download_done call_timer_fn __run_timers.part.0 run_timer_softirq __do_softirq ... The nlmsg_new with GFP_KERNEL parameter may sleep during memory allocation process, and the timer handler is run as the result of a "software interrupt" that should not call any other function that could sleep. This patch changes allocation mode of netlink message from GFP_KERNEL to GFP_ATOMIC in order to prevent sleep in atomic bug. netlink: make validation more configurable for future strictness We currently have two levels of strict validation: 1) liberal (default) - undefined (type >= max) & NLA_UNSPEC attributes accepted - attribute length >= expected accepted - garbage at end of message accepted 2) strict (opt-in) - NLA_UNSPEC attributes accepted - attribute length >= expected accepted Split out parsing strictness into four different options: * TRAILING - check that there's no trailing data after parsing attributes (in message or nested) * MAXTYPE - reject attrs > max known type * UNSPEC - reject attributes with NLA_UNSPEC policy entries * STRICT_ATTRS - strictly validate attribute size The default for future things should be *everything*. The current *_strict() is a combination of TRAILING and MAXTYPE, and is renamed to _deprecated_strict(). The current regular parsing has none of this, and is renamed to *_parse_deprecated(). Additionally it allows us to selectively set one of the new flags even on old policies. Notably, the UNSPEC flag could be useful in this case, since it can be arranged (by filling in the policy) to not be an incompatible userspace ABI change, but would then going forward prevent forgetting attribute entries. Similar can apply to the POLICY flag. We end up with the following renames: * nla_parse -> nla_parse_deprecated * nla_parse_strict -> nla_parse_deprecated_strict * nlmsg_parse -> nlmsg_parse_deprecated * nlmsg_parse_strict -> nlmsg_parse_deprecated_strict * nla_parse_nested -> nla_parse_nested_deprecated * nla_validate_nested -> nla_validate_nested_deprecated Using spatch, of course: @@ expression TB, MAX, HEAD, LEN, POL, EXT; @@ -nla_parse(TB, MAX, HEAD, LEN, POL, EXT) +nla_parse_deprecated(TB, MAX, HEAD, LEN, POL, EXT) @@ expression NLH, HDRLEN, TB, MAX, POL, EXT; @@ -nlmsg_parse(NLH, HDRLEN, TB, MAX, POL, EXT) +nlmsg_parse_deprecated(NLH, HDRLEN, TB, MAX, POL, EXT) @@ expression NLH, HDRLEN, TB, MAX, POL, EXT; @@ -nlmsg_parse_strict(NLH, HDRLEN, TB, MAX, POL, EXT) +nlmsg_parse_deprecated_strict(NLH, HDRLEN, TB, MAX, POL, EXT) @@ expression TB, MAX, NLA, POL, EXT; @@ -nla_parse_nested(TB, MAX, NLA, POL, EXT) +nla_parse_nested_deprecated(TB, MAX, NLA, POL, EXT) @@ expression START, MAX, POL, EXT; @@ -nla_validate_nested(START, MAX, POL, EXT) +nla_validate_nested_deprecated(START, MAX, POL, EXT) @@ expression NLH, HDRLEN, MAX, POL, EXT; @@ -nlmsg_validate(NLH, HDRLEN, MAX, POL, EXT) +nlmsg_validate_deprecated(NLH, HDRLEN, MAX, POL, EXT) For this patch, don't actually add the strict, non-renamed versions yet so that it breaks compile if I get it wrong. Also, while at it, make nla_validate and nla_parse go down to a common __nla_validate_parse() function to avoid code duplication. Ultimately, this allows us to have very strict validation for every new caller of nla_parse()/nlmsg_parse() etc as re-introduced in the next patch, while existing things will continue to work as is. netlink: make nla_nest_start() add NLA_F_NESTED flag Even if the NLA_F_NESTED flag was introduced more than 11 years ago, most netlink based interfaces (including recently added ones) are still not setting it in kernel generated messages. Without the flag, message parsers not aware of attribute semantics (e.g. wireshark dissector or libmnl's mnl_nlmsg_fprintf()) cannot recognize nested attributes and won't display the structure of their contents. Unfortunately we cannot just add the flag everywhere as there may be userspace applications which check nlattr::nla_type directly rather than through a helper masking out the flags. Therefore the patch renames nla_nest_start() to nla_nest_start_noflag() and introduces nla_nest_start() as a wrapper adding NLA_F_NESTED. The calls which add NLA_F_NESTED manually are rewritten to use nla_nest_start(). Except for changes in include/net/netlink.h, the patch was generated using this semantic patch: @@ expression E1, E2; @@ -nla_nest_start(E1, E2) +nla_nest_start_noflag(E1, E2) @@ expression E1, E2; @@ -nla_nest_start_noflag(E1, E2 | NLA_F_NESTED) +nla_nest_start(E1, E2) Signed-off-by: Michal Kubecek <mkubecek@suse.cz> Acked-by: Jiri Pirko <jiri@mellanox.com> Acked-by: David Ahern <dsahern@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. genetlink: make policy common to family Since maxattr is common, the policy can't really differ sanely, so make it common as well. The only user that did in fact manage to make a non-common policy is taskstats, which has to be really careful about it (since it's still using a common maxattr!). This is no longer supported, but we can fake it using pre_doit. This reduces the size of e.g. nl80211.o (which has lots of commands): text data bss dec hex filename 398745 14323 2240 415308 6564c net/wireless/nl80211.o (before) 397913 14331 2240 414484 65314 net/wireless/nl80211.o (after) -------------------------------- -832 +8 0 -824 Which is obviously just 8 bytes for each command, and an added 8 bytes for the new policy pointer. I'm not sure why the ops list is counted as .text though. Most of the code transformations were done using the following spatch: @ops@ identifier OPS; expression POLICY; @@ struct genl_ops OPS[] = { ..., { - .policy = POLICY, }, ... }; @@ identifier ops.OPS; expression ops.POLICY; identifier fam; expression M; @@ struct genl_family fam = { .ops = OPS, .maxattr = M, + .policy = POLICY, ... }; This also gets rid of devlink_nl_cmd_region_read_dumpit() accessing the cb->data as ops, which we want to change in a later genl patch. Therefore we should only subtract size of genetlink header and netlink message header, not user header. This also means we don't need to pass the pointer to genetlink family and the same is true for genl_dump_check_consistent() which is the only caller of genlmsg_nlhdr(). NFC: Add NFC_CMD_DEACTIVATE_TARGET support Once an NFC target (i.e., a tag) is found, it remains active until there is a failure reading or writing it (often caused by the target moving out of range). While the target is active, the NFC adapter and antenna must remain powered. This wastes power when the target remains in range but the client application no longer cares whether it is there or not. To mitigate this, add a new netlink command that allows userspace to deactivate an active target. When issued, this command will cause the NFC subsystem to act as though the target was moved out of range. Once the command has been executed, the client application can power off the NFC adapter to reduce power consumption. netlink: make nlmsg_end() and genlmsg_end() void Contrary to common expectations for an "int" return, these functions return only a positive value -- if used correctly they cannot even return 0 because the message header will necessarily be in the skb. This makes the very common pattern of if (genlmsg_end(...) < 0) { ... } be a whole bunch of dead code. Many places also simply do return nlmsg_end(...); and the caller is expected to deal with it. This also commonly (at least for me) causes errors, because it is very common to write if (my_function(...)) /* error condition */ and if my_function() does "return nlmsg_end()" this is of course wrong. Additionally, there's not a single place in the kernel that actually needs the message length returned, and if anyone needs it later then it'll be very easy to just use skb->len there. Remove this, and make the functions void. This removes a bunch of dead code as described above. The patch adds lines because I did - return nlmsg_end(...); + nlmsg_end(...); + return 0; I could have preserved all the function's return values by returning skb->len, but instead I've audited all the places calling the affected functions and found that none cared. A few places actually compared the return value with <= 0 in dump functionality, but that could just be changed to < 0 with no change in behaviour, so I opted for the more efficient version. One instance of the error I've made numerous times now is also present in net/phonet/pn_netlink.c in the route_dumpit() function - it didn't check for <0 or <=0 and thus broke out of the loop every single time. I've preserved this since it will (I think) have caused the messages to userspace to be formatted differently with just a single message for every SKB returned to userspace. It's possible that this isn't needed for the tools that actually use this, but I don't even know what they are so couldn't test that changing this behaviour would be acceptable. genetlink: make multicast groups const, prevent abuse Register generic netlink multicast groups as an array with the family and give them contiguous group IDs. Then instead of passing the global group ID to the various functions that send messages, pass the ID relative to the family - for most families that's just 0 because the only have one group. This avoids the list_head and ID in each group, adding a new field for the mcast group ID offset to the family. At the same time, this allows us to prevent abusing groups again like the quota and dropmon code did, since we can now check that a family only uses a group it owns. genetlink: only pass array to genl_register_family_with_ops() As suggested by David Miller, make genl_register_family_with_ops() a macro and pass only the array, evaluating ARRAY_SIZE() in the macro, this is a little safer. The openvswitch has some indirection, assing ops/n_ops directly in that code. This might ultimately just assign the pointers in the family initializations, saving the struct genl_family_and_ops and code (once mcast groups are handled differently.)
