ipvs: Remove {Enter,Leave}Function Remove EnterFunction and LeaveFunction. These debugging macros seem well past their use-by date. And seem to have little value these days. Removing them allows some trivial cleanup of some exit paths for some functions. These are also included in this patch. There is likely scope for further cleanup of both debugging and unwind paths. But let's leave that for another day. Only intended to change debug output, and only when CONFIG_IP_VS_DEBUG is enabled. Compile tested only. ipvs: add rcu protection to stats In preparation to using RCU locking for the list with estimators, make sure the struct ip_vs_stats are released after RCU grace period by using RCU callbacks. This affects ipvs->tot_stats where we can not use RCU callbacks for ipvs, so we use allocated struct ip_vs_stats_rcu. For services and dests we force RCU callbacks for all cases. netfilter: use actual socket sk rather than skb sk when routing harder If netfilter changes the packet mark when mangling, the packet is rerouted using the route_me_harder set of functions. Prior to this commit, there's one big difference between route_me_harder and the ordinary initial routing functions, described in the comment above __ip_queue_xmit(): /* Note: skb->sk can be different from sk, in case of tunnels */ int __ip_queue_xmit(struct sock *sk, struct sk_buff *skb, struct flowi *fl, That function goes on to correctly make use of sk->sk_bound_dev_if, rather than skb->sk->sk_bound_dev_if. And indeed the comment is true: a tunnel will receive a packet in ndo_start_xmit with an initial skb->sk. It will make some transformations to that packet, and then it will send the encapsulated packet out of a *new* socket. That new socket will basically always have a different sk_bound_dev_if (otherwise there'd be a routing loop). So for the purposes of routing the encapsulated packet, the routing information as it pertains to the socket should come from that socket's sk, rather than the packet's original skb->sk. For that reason __ip_queue_xmit() and related functions all do the right thing. One might argue that all tunnels should just call skb_orphan(skb) before transmitting the encapsulated packet into the new socket. But tunnels do *not* do this -- and this is wisely avoided in skb_scrub_packet() too -- because features like TSQ rely on skb->destructor() being called when that buffer space is truely available again. Calling skb_orphan(skb) too early would result in buffers filling up unnecessarily and accounting info being all wrong. Instead, additional routing must take into account the new sk, just as __ip_queue_xmit() notes. So, this commit addresses the problem by fishing the correct sk out of state->sk -- it's already set properly in the call to nf_hook() in __ip_local_out(), which receives the sk as part of its normal functionality. So we make sure to plumb state->sk through the various route_me_harder functions, and then make correct use of it following the example of __ip_queue_xmit(). ipvs: queue delayed work to expire no destination connections if expire_nodest_conn=1 When expire_nodest_conn=1 and a destination is deleted, IPVS does not expire the existing connections until the next matching incoming packet. If there are many connection entries from a single client to a single destination, many packets may get dropped before all the connections are expired (more likely with lots of UDP traffic). An optimization can be made where upon deletion of a destination, IPVS queues up delayed work to immediately expire any connections with a deleted destination. This ensures any reused source ports from a client (within the IPVS timeouts) are scheduled to new real servers instead of silently dropped. ipvs: allow connection reuse for unconfirmed conntrack YangYuxi is reporting that connection reuse is causing one-second delay when SYN hits existing connection in TIME_WAIT state. Such delay was added to give time to expire both the IPVS connection and the corresponding conntrack. This was considered a rare case at that time but it is causing problem for some environments such as Kubernetes. As nf_conntrack_tcp_packet() can decide to release the conntrack in TIME_WAIT state and to replace it with a fresh NEW conntrack, we can use this to allow rescheduling just by tuning our check: if the conntrack is confirmed we can not schedule it to different real server and the one-second delay still applies but if new conntrack was created, we are free to select new real server without any delays. ipvs: fix dependency on nf_defrag_ipv6 ipvs relies on nf_defrag_ipv6 module to manage IPv6 fragmentation, but lacks proper Kconfig dependencies and does not explicitly request defrag features. As a result, if netfilter hooks are not loaded, when IPv6 fragmented packet are handled by ipvs only the first fragment makes through. When ipvs receives new packets and cannot find an ipvs connection, it will create a new connection, then if the dest is unavailable (i.e. IP_VS_DEST_F_AVAILABLE), the packet will be dropped sliently. But if the dropped packet is the first packet of this connection, the connection control timer never has a chance to start and the ipvs connection cannot be released. Now it is possible estimation_timer (timer), a stats reader, to interrupt the local client in the middle of write_seqcount_{begin,end} sequence leading to loop (DEADLOCK). net: Convert ipvs_core_ops These pernet_operations register and unregister nf hooks, /proc entries, sysctl, percpu statistics. There are several global lists, and the only list modified without exclusive locks is ip_vs_conn_tab in ip_vs_conn_flush(). We iterate the list and force the timers expire at the moment. Since there were possible several timer expirations before this patch, and since they are safe, the patch does not invent new parallelism of their destruction. ipvs: SNAT packet replies only for NATed connections We do not check if packet from real server is for NAT connection before performing SNAT. This causes problems for setups that use DR/TUN and allow local clients to access the real server directly, for example: - local client in director creates IPVS-DR/TUN connection CIP->VIP and the request packets are routed to RIP. Talks are finished but IPVS connection is not expired yet. - second local client creates non-IPVS connection CIP->RIP with same reply tuple RIP->CIP and when replies are received on LOCAL_IN we wrongly assign them for the first client connection because RIP->CIP matches the reply direction. As result, IPVS SNATs replies for non-IPVS connections. The problem is more visible to local UDP clients but in rare cases it can happen also for TCP or remote clients when the real server sends the reply traffic via the director. So, better to be more precise for the reply traffic. As replies are not expected for DR/TUN connections, better to not touch them. There are 2 reasons to do so: 1) This field is really an index into an zero based array and thus is unsigned entity. Using negative value is out-of-bound access by definition. 2) On x86_64 unsigned 32-bit data which are mixed with pointers via array indexing or offsets added or subtracted to pointers are preffered to signed 32-bit data. "int" being used as an array index needs to be sign-extended to 64-bit before being used. void f(long *p, int i) { g(p[i]); } roughly translates to movsx rsi, esi mov rdi, [rsi+...] call g MOVSX is 3 byte instruction which isn't necessary if the variable is unsigned because x86_64 is zero extending by default. Now, there is net_generic() function which, you guessed it right, uses "int" as an array index: static inline void *net_generic(const struct net *net, int id) { ... ptr = ng->ptr[id - 1]; ... } And this function is used a lot, so those sign extensions add up. Patch snipes ~1730 bytes on allyesconfig kernel (without all junk messing with code generation): add/remove: 0/0 grow/shrink: 70/598 up/down: 396/-2126 (-1730) Unfortunately some functions actually grow bigger. This is a semmingly random artefact of code generation with register allocator being used differently. gcc decides that some variable needs to live in new r8+ registers and every access now requires REX prefix. ipvs: update real-server binding of outgoing connections in SIP-pe Previous patch that introduced handling of outgoing packets in SIP persistent-engine did not call ip_vs_check_template() in case packet was matching a connection template. Assumption was that real-server was healthy, since it was sending a packet just in that moment. There are however real-server fault conditions requiring that association between call-id and real-server (represented by connection template) gets updated. Here is an example of the sequence of events: 1) RS1 is a back2back user agent that handled call-id1 and call-id2 2) RS1 is down and was marked as unavailable 3) new message from outside comes to IPVS with call-id1 4) IPVS reschedules the message to RS2, which becomes new call handler 5) RS2 forwards the message outside, translating call-id1 to call-id2 6) inside pe->conn_out() IPVS matches call-id2 with existing template 7) IPVS does not change association call-id2 <-> RS1 8) new message comes from client with call-id2 9) IPVS reschedules the message to a real-server potentially different from RS2, which is now the correct destination This patch introduces ip_vs_check_template() call in the handling of outgoing packets for SIP-pe. And also introduces a second optional argument for ip_vs_check_template() that allows to check if dest associated to a connection template is the same dest that was identified as the source of the packet. This is to change the real-server bound to a particular call-id independently from its availability status: the idea is that it's more reliable, for in->out direction (where internal network can be considered trusted), to always associate a call-id with the last real-server that used it in one of its messages. Think about above sequence of events where, just after step 5, RS1 returns instead to be available. Comparison of dests is done by simply comparing pointers to struct ip_vs_dest; there should be no cases where struct ip_vs_dest keeps its memory address, but represent a different real-server in terms of ip-address / port. ipvs: make drop_entry protection effective for SIP-pe DoS protection policy that deletes connections to avoid out of memory is currently not effective for SIP-pe plus OPS-mode for two reasons: 1) connection templates (holding SIP call-id) are always skipped in ip_vs_random_dropentry() 2) in_pkts counter (used by drop_entry algorithm) is not incremented for connection templates This patch addresses such problems with the following changes: a) connection templates associated (via their dest) to virtual-services configured in OPS mode are included in ip_vs_random_dropentry() monitoring. This applies to SIP-pe over UDP (which requires OPS mode), but is more general principle: when OPS is controlled by templates memory can be used only by templates themselves, since OPS conns are deleted after packet is forwarded. b) OPS connections, if controlled by a template, cause increment of in_pkts counter of their template. This is already happening but only in case director is in master-slave mode (see ip_vs_sync_conn()). ipvs: handle connections started by real-servers When using LVS-NAT and SIP persistence-egine over UDP, the following limitations are present with current implementation: 1) To actually have load-balancing based on Call-ID header, you need to use one-packet-scheduling mode. But with one-packet-scheduling the connection is deleted just after packet is forwarded, so SIP responses coming from real-servers do not match any connection and SNAT is not applied. 2) If you do not use "-o" option, IPVS behaves as normal UDP load balancer, so different SIP calls (each one identified by a different Call-ID) coming from the same ip-address/port go to the same real-server. So basically you don’t have load-balancing based on Call-ID as intended. 3) Call-ID is not learned when a new SIP call is started by a real-server (inside-to-outside direction), but only in the outside-to-inside direction. This would be a general problem for all SIP servers acting as Back2BackUserAgent. This patch aims to solve problems 1) and 3) while keeping OPS mode mandatory for SIP-UDP, so that 2) is not a problem anymore. The basic mechanism implemented is to make packets, that do not match any existent connection but come from real-servers, create new connections instead of let them pass without any effect. When such packets pass through ip_vs_out(), if their source ip address and source port match a configured real-server, a new connection is automatically created in the same way as it would have happened if the packet had come from outside-to-inside direction. A new connection template is created too if the virtual-service is persistent and there is no matching connection template found. The new connection automatically created, if the service had "-o" option, is an OPS connection that lasts only the time to forward the packet, just like it happens on the ingress side. The main part of this mechanism is implemented inside a persistent-engine specific callback (at the moment only SIP persistent engine exists) and is triggered only for UDP packets, since connection oriented protocols, by using different set of ports (typically ephemeral ports) to open new outgoing connections, should not need this feature. The following requisites are needed for automatic connection creation; if any is missing the packet simply goes the same way as before. a) virtual-service is not fwmark based (this is because fwmark services do not store address and port of the virtual-service, required to build the connection data). b) virtual-service and real-servers must not have been configured with omitted port (this is again to have all data to create the connection). ipvs: drop first packet to redirect conntrack Jiri Bohac is reporting for a problem where the attempt to reschedule existing connection to another real server needs proper redirect for the conntrack used by the IPVS connection. For example, when IPVS connection is created to NAT-ed real server we alter the reply direction of conntrack. If we later decide to select different real server we can not alter again the conntrack. And if we expire the old connection, the new connection is left without conntrack. So, the only way to redirect both the IPVS connection and the Netfilter's conntrack is to drop the SYN packet that hits existing connection, to wait for the next jiffie to expire the old connection and its conntrack and to rely on client's retransmission to create new connection as usually. Jiri Bohac provided a fix that drops all SYNs on rescheduling, I extended his patch to do such drops only for connections that use conntrack. Here is the original report from Jiri Bohac: Since commit dc7b3eb900aa ("ipvs: Fix reuse connection if real server is dead"), new connections to dead servers are redistributed immediately to new servers. The old connection is expired using ip_vs_conn_expire_now() which sets the connection timer to expire immediately. However, before the timer callback, ip_vs_conn_expire(), is run to clean the connection's conntrack entry, the new redistributed connection may already be established and its conntrack removed instead. Fix this by dropping the first packet of the new connection instead, like we do when the destination server is not available. The timer will have deleted the old conntrack entry long before the first packet of the new connection is retransmitted. ipvs: Don't protect ip_vs_addr_is_unicast with CONFIG_SYSCTL I arranged the code so that the compiler can remove the unecessary bits in ip_vs_leave when CONFIG_SYSCTL is unset, and removed an explicit CONFIG_SYSCTL. Unfortunately when rebasing my work on top of that of Alex Gartrell I missed the fact that the newly added function ip_vs_addr_is_unicast was surrounded by CONFIG_SYSCTL. So remove the now unnecessary CONFIG_SYSCTL guards around ip_vs_addr_is_unicast. It is causing build failures today when CONFIG_SYSCTL is not selected and any self respecting compiler will notice that sysctl_cache_bypass is always false without CONFIG_SYSCTL and not include the logic from the function ip_vs_addr_is_unicast in the compiled code. ipvs: fix crash if scheduler is changed I overlooked the svc->sched_data usage from schedulers when the services were converted to RCU in 3.10. Now the rare ipvsadm -E command can change the scheduler but due to the reverse order of ip_vs_bind_scheduler and ip_vs_unbind_scheduler we provide new sched_data to the old scheduler resulting in a crash. To fix it without changing the scheduler methods we have to use synchronize_rcu() only for the editing case. It means all svc->scheduler readers should expect a NULL value. To avoid breakage for the service listing and ipvsadm -R we can use the "none" name to indicate that scheduler is not assigned, a state when we drop new connections. ipvs: allow rescheduling of new connections when port reuse is detected Currently, when TCP/SCTP port reusing happens, IPVS will find the old entry and use it for the new one, behaving like a forced persistence. But if you consider a cluster with a heavy load of small connections, such reuse will happen often and may lead to a not optimal load balancing and might prevent a new node from getting a fair load. This patch introduces a new sysctl, conn_reuse_mode, that allows controlling how to proceed when port reuse is detected. The default value will allow rescheduling of new connections only if the old entry was in TIME_WAIT state for TCP or CLOSED for SCTP. ipvs: rerouting to local clients is not needed anymore commit f5a41847acc5 ("ipvs: move ip_route_me_harder for ICMP") from 2.6.37 introduced ip_route_me_harder() call for responses to local clients, so that we can provide valid rt_src after SNAT. It was used by TCP to provide valid daddr for ip_send_reply(). After commit 0a5ebb8000c5 ("ipv4: Pass explicit daddr arg to ip_send_reply()." from 3.0 this rerouting is not needed anymore and should be avoided, especially in LOCAL_IN. This issue does not occur with smaller packets than MTU (where fragmentation does not happen) </example> As was discussed previously, the only correct solution seems to be to use reassembled skb instead of separete frags. Doing this has positive side effects in reducing sk_buff by one pointer (nfct_reasm) and also the reams dances in ipvs and conntrack can be removed. Future plan is to remove net/ipv6/netfilter/nf_conntrack_reasm.c entirely and use code in net/ipv6/reassembly.c instead. ipvs: make the service replacement more robust commit 578bc3ef1e473a ("ipvs: reorganize dest trash") added IP_VS_DEST_STATE_REMOVING flag and RCU callback named ip_vs_dest_wait_readers() to keep dests and services after removal for at least a RCU grace period. But we have the following corner cases: - we can not reuse the same dest if its service is removed while IP_VS_DEST_STATE_REMOVING is still set because another dest removal in the first grace period can not extend this period. It can happen when ipvsadm -C && ipvsadm -R is used. - dest->svc can be replaced but ip_vs_in_stats() and ip_vs_out_stats() have no explicit read memory barriers when accessing dest->svc. It can happen that dest->svc was just freed (replaced) while we use it to update the stats. We solve the problems as follows: - IP_VS_DEST_STATE_REMOVING is removed and we ensure a fixed idle period for the dest (IP_VS_DEST_TRASH_PERIOD). idle_start will remember when for first time after deletion we noticed dest->refcnt=0. Later, the connections can grab a reference while in RCU grace period but if refcnt becomes 0 we can safely free the dest and its svc. - dest->svc becomes RCU pointer. As result, we add explicit RCU locking in ip_vs_in_stats() and ip_vs_out_stats(). - __ip_vs_unbind_svc is renamed to __ip_vs_svc_put(), it now can free the service immediately or after a RCU grace period. dest->svc is not set to NULL anymore. As result, unlinked dests and their services are freed always after IP_VS_DEST_TRASH_PERIOD period, unused services are freed after a RCU grace period. ipvs: optimize dst usage for real server Currently when forwarding requests to real servers we use dst_lock and atomic operations when cloning the dst_cache value. As the dst_cache value does not change most of the time it is better to use RCU and to lock dst_lock only when we need to replace the obsoleted dst. For this to work we keep dst_cache in new structure protected by RCU. For packets to remote real servers we will use noref version of dst_cache, it will be valid while we are in RCU read-side critical section because now dst_release for replaced dsts will be invoked after the grace period. Packets to local real servers that are passed to local stack with NF_ACCEPT need a dst clone. ipvs: add backup_only flag to avoid loops Dmitry Akindinov is reporting for a problem where SYNs are looping between the master and backup server when the backup server is used as real server in DR mode and has IPVS rules to function as director. Even when the backup function is enabled we continue to forward traffic and schedule new connections when the current master is using the backup server as real server. While this is not a problem for NAT, for DR and TUN method the backup server can not determine if a request comes from client or from director. To avoid such loops add new sysctl flag backup_only. It can be needed for DR/TUN setups that do not need backup and director function at the same time. When the backup function is enabled we stop any forwarding and pass the traffic to the local stack (real server mode). The flag disables the director function when the backup function is enabled. For setups that enable backup function for some virtual services and director function for other virtual services there should be another more complex solution to support DR/TUN mode, may be to assign per-virtual service syncid value, so that we can differentiate the requests. ipvs: API change to avoid rescan of IPv6 exthdr Reduce the number of times we scan/skip the IPv6 exthdrs. This patch contains a lot of API changes. This is done, to avoid repeating the scan of finding the IPv6 headers, via ipv6_find_hdr(), which is called by ip_vs_fill_iph_skb(). Finding the IPv6 headers is done as early as possible, and passed on as a pointer "struct ip_vs_iphdr *" to the affected functions. This patch reduce/removes 19 calls to ip_vs_fill_iph_skb(). Notice, I have choosen, not to change the API of function pointer "(*schedule)" (in struct ip_vs_scheduler) as it can be used by external schedulers, via {un,}register_ip_vs_scheduler. Only 4 out of 10 schedulers use info from ip_vs_iphdr*, and when they do, they are only interested in iph->{s,d}addr. ipvs: Complete IPv6 fragment handling for IPVS IPVS now supports fragmented packets, with support from nf_conntrack_reasm.c Based on patch from: Hans Schillstrom. IPVS do like conntrack i.e. use the skb->nfct_reasm (i.e. when all fragments is collected, nf_ct_frag6_output() starts a "re-play" of all fragments into the interrupted PREROUTING chain at prio -399 (NF_IP6_PRI_CONNTRACK_DEFRAG+1) with nfct_reasm pointing to the assembled packet.) Notice, module nf_defrag_ipv6 must be loaded for this to work. Report unhandled fragments, and recommend user to load nf_defrag_ipv6. To handle fw-mark for fragments. Add a new IPVS hook into prerouting chain at prio -99 (NF_IP6_PRI_NAT_DST+1) to catch fragments, and copy fw-mark info from the first packet with an upper layer header. IPv6 fragment handling should be the last thing on the IPVS IPv6 missing support list. ipvs: Fix faulty IPv6 extension header handling in IPVS IPv6 packets can contain extension headers, thus its wrong to assume that the transport/upper-layer header, starts right after (struct ipv6hdr) the IPv6 header. IPVS uses this false assumption, and will write SNAT & DNAT modifications at a fixed pos which will corrupt the message. To fix this, proper header position must be found before modifying packets. Introducing ip_vs_fill_iph_skb(), which uses ipv6_find_hdr() to skip the exthdrs. It finds (1) the transport header offset, (2) the protocol, and (3) detects if the packet is a fragment. Note, that fragments in IPv6 is represented via an exthdr. Thus, this is detected while skipping through the exthdrs. This patch depends on commit 84018f55a: "netfilter: ip6_tables: add flags parameter to ipv6_find_hdr()" This also adds a dependency to ip6_tables. Originally based on patch from: Hans Schillstrom kABI notes: Changing struct ip_vs_iphdr is a potential minor kABI breaker, because external modules can be compiled with another version of this struct. This should not matter, as they would most-likely be using a compiled-in version of ip_vs_fill_iphdr(). When recompiled, they will notice ip_vs_fill_iphdr() no longer exists, and they have to used ip_vs_fill_iph_skb() instead. ipvs: implement passive PMTUD for IPIP packets IPVS is missing the logic to update PMTU in routing for its IPIP packets. We monitor the dst_mtu and can return FRAG_NEEDED messages but if the tunneled packets get ICMP error we can not rely on other traffic to save the lowest MTU. The following patch adds ICMP handling for IPIP packets in incoming direction, from some remote host to our local IP used as saddr in the outer header. By this way we can forward any related ICMP traffic if it is for IPVS TUN connection. For the special case of PMTUD we update the routing and if client requested DF we can forward the error. To properly update the routing we have to bind the cached route (dest->dst_cache) to the selected saddr because ipv4_update_pmtu uses saddr for dst lookup. Add IP_VS_RT_MODE_CONNECT flag to force such binding with second route. Update ip_vs_tunnel_xmit to provide IP_VS_RT_MODE_CONNECT and change the code to copy DF. For now we prefer not to force PMTU discovery (outer DF=1) because we don't have configuration option to enable or disable PMTUD. As we do not keep any packets to resend, we prefer not to play games with packets without DF bit because the sender is not informed when they are rejected. Also, change ops->update_pmtu to be called only for local clients because there is no point to update MTU for input routes, in our case skb->dst->dev is lo. ipvs: reduce sync rate with time thresholds Add two new sysctl vars to control the sync rate with the main idea to reduce the rate for connection templates because currently it depends on the packet rate for controlled connections. This mechanism should be useful also for normal connections with high traffic. sync_refresh_period: in seconds, difference in reported connection timer that triggers new sync message. It can be used to avoid sync messages for the specified period (or half of the connection timeout if it is lower) if connection state is not changed from last sync. sync_retries: integer, 0..3, defines sync retries with period of sync_refresh_period/8. Useful to protect against loss of sync messages. Allow sysctl_sync_threshold to be used with sysctl_sync_period=0, so that only single sync message is sent if sync_refresh_period is also 0. Add new field "sync_endtime" in connection structure to hold the reported time when connection expires. The 2 lowest bits will represent the retry count. ipvs: fix matching of fwmark templates during scheduling Commit f11017ec2d1859c661f4e2b12c4a8d250e1f47cf (2.6.37) moved the fwmark variable in subcontext that is invalidated before reaching the ip_vs_ct_in_get call. As vaddr is provided as pointer in the param structure make sure the fwmark variable is in same context. As the fwmark templates can not be matched, more and more template connections are created and the controlled connections can not go to single real server. ipvs: restore support for iptables SNAT Fix the IPVS priority in LOCAL_IN hook, so that SNAT target in POSTROUTING is supported for IPVS traffic as in 2.6.36 where it worked depending on module load order. Before 2.6.37 we used priority 100 in LOCAL_IN to process remote requests. We used the same priority as iptables SNAT and if IPVS handlers are installed before SNAT handlers we supported SNAT in POSTROUTING for the IPVS traffic. If SNAT is installed before IPVS, the netfilter handlers are before IPVS and netfilter checks the NAT table twice for the IPVS requests: once in LOCAL_IN where IPS_SRC_NAT_DONE is set and second time in POSTROUTING where the SNAT rules are ignored because IPS_SRC_NAT_DONE was already set in LOCAL_IN. But in 2.6.37 we changed the IPVS priority for LOCAL_IN with the goal to be unique (101) forgetting the fact that for IPVS traffic we should not walk both LOCAL_IN and POSTROUTING nat tables. So, change the priority for processing remote IPVS requests from 101 to 99, i.e. before NAT_SRC (100) because we prefer to support SNAT in POSTROUTING instead of LOCAL_IN. It also moves the priority for IPVS replies from 99 to 98. Use constants instead of magic numbers at these places. For ICMP in FORWARD hook just restrict the rt_mode for NAT to disable LOCALNODE. All other modes do not allow IP_VS_RT_MODE_RDR, so we should be safe with the ICMP forwarding. Using cp->daddr as replacement for rt_dst is safe for all modes except BYPASS, even when cp->dest is NULL because it is cp->daddr that is used to assign cp->dest for sync-ed connections. I tried an approach of breaking the now #ifdef'ed portions out into a separate function. However this appeared to grow the compiled code on x86_64 by about 200 bytes in the case where CONFIG_SYSCTL is defined. The net struct is 0xa40 in size ( a little bit smaller for 32 bit arch:s) and cache-line aligned, so a ptr >> 5 might be a more clever solution ? All lookups where net is compared uses net_eq() which returns 1 when netns is disabled, and the compiler seems to do something clever in that case. ip_vs_conn_fill_param() have *net as first param now. ipvs: changes for local client This patch deals with local client processing. Prefer LOCAL_OUT hook for scheduling connections from local clients. LOCAL_IN is still supported if the packets are not marked as processed in LOCAL_OUT. The idea to process requests in LOCAL_OUT is to alter conntrack reply before it is confirmed at POST_ROUTING. If the local requests are processed in LOCAL_IN the conntrack can not be updated and matching by state is impossible. Add the following handlers: - ip_vs_reply[46] at LOCAL_IN:99 to process replies from remote real servers to local clients. Now when both replies from remote real servers (ip_vs_reply*) and local real servers (ip_vs_local_reply*) are handled it is safe to remove the conn_out_get call from ip_vs_in because it does not support related ICMP packets. - ip_vs_local_request[46] at LOCAL_OUT:-98 to process requests from local client Handling in LOCAL_OUT causes some changes: - as skb->dev, skb->protocol and skb->pkt_type are not defined in LOCAL_OUT make sure we set skb->dev before calling icmpv6_send, prefer skb_dst(skb) for struct net and remove the skb->protocol checks from TUN transmitters. ipvs: changes for local real server This patch deals with local real servers: - Add support for DNAT to local address (different real server port). It needs ip_vs_out hook in LOCAL_OUT for both families because skb->protocol is not set for locally generated packets and can not be used to set 'af'. - Skip packets in ip_vs_in marked with skb->ipvs_property because ip_vs_out processing can be executed in LOCAL_OUT but we still have the conn_out_get check in ip_vs_in. - Ignore packets with inet->nodefrag from local stack - Require skb_dst(skb) != NULL because we use it to get struct net - Add support for changing the route to local IPv4 stack after DNAT depending on the source address type. Local client sets output route and the remote client sets input route. It looks like IPv6 does not need such rerouting because the replies use addresses from initial incoming header, not from skb route. - All transmitters now have strict checks for the destination address type: redirect from non-local address to local real server requires NAT method, local address can not be used as source address when talking to remote real server. - Now LOCALNODE is not set explicitly as forwarding method in real server to allow the connections to provide correct forwarding method to the backup server. Not sure if this breaks tools that expect to see 'Local' real server type. If needed, this can be supported with new flag IP_VS_DEST_F_LOCAL. Now it should be possible connections in backup that lost their fwmark information during sync to be forwarded properly to their daddr, even if it is local address in the backup server. By this way backup could be used as real server for DR or TUN, for NAT there are some restrictions because tuple collisions in conntracks can create problems for the traffic. - Call ip_vs_dst_reset when destination is updated in case some real server IP type is changed between local and remote. ipvs: do not schedule conns from real servers This patch is needed to avoid scheduling of packets from local real server when we add ip_vs_in in LOCAL_OUT hook to support local client. Currently, when ip_vs_in can not find existing connection it tries to create new one by calling ip_vs_schedule. The default indication from ip_vs_schedule was if connection was scheduled to real server. If real server is not available we try to use the bypass forwarding method or to send ICMP error. But in some cases we do not want to use the bypass feature. So, add flag 'ignored' to indicate if the scheduler ignores this packet. Make sure we do not create new connections from replies. We can hit this problem for persistent services and local real server when ip_vs_in is added to LOCAL_OUT hook to handle local clients. Also, make sure ip_vs_schedule ignores SYN packets for Active FTP DATA from local real server. The FTP DATA connection should be created on SYN+ACK from client to assign correct connection daddr. ipvs: netfilter connection tracking changes Add more code to IPVS to work with Netfilter connection tracking and fix some problems. - Allow IPVS to be compiled without connection tracking as in 2.6.35 and before. This can avoid keeping conntracks for all IPVS connections because this costs memory. ip_vs_ftp still depends on connection tracking and NAT as implemented for 2.6.36. - Add sysctl var "conntrack" to enable connection tracking for all IPVS connections. For loaded IPVS directors it needs tuning of nf_conntrack_max limit. - Add IP_VS_CONN_F_NFCT connection flag to request the connection to use connection tracking. This allows user space to provide this flag, for example, in dest->conn_flags. This can be useful to request connection tracking per real server instead of forcing it for all connections with the "conntrack" sysctl. This flag is set currently only by ip_vs_ftp and of course by "conntrack" sysctl. - Add ip_vs_nfct.c file to hold all connection tracking code, by this way main code should not depend of netfilter conntrack support. - Return back the ip_vs_post_routing handler as in 2.6.35 and use skb->ipvs_property=1 to allow IPVS to work without connection tracking Connection tracking: - most of the code is already in 2.6.36-rc - alter conntrack reply tuple for LVS-NAT connections when first packet from client is forwarded and conntrack state is NEW or RELATED. Additionally, alter reply for RELATED connections from real server, again for packet in original direction. - add IP_VS_XMIT_TUNNEL to confirm conntrack (without altering reply) for LVS-TUN early because we want to call nf_reset. It is needed because we add IPIP header and the original conntrack should be preserved, not destroyed. The transmitted IPIP packets can reuse same conntrack, so we do not set skb->ipvs_property. - try to destroy conntrack when the IPVS connection is destroyed. It is not fatal if conntrack disappears before that, it depends on the used timers. The problem is that nf_conntrack_ftp.c:help() tries to create the same expectation later in POST_ROUTING and drops the packet with "dropping packet" message after failure in nf_ct_expect_related. - Change ip_vs_update_conntrack to alter the conntrack for related connections from real server. If we do not alter the reply in this direction the next packet from client sent to vport 20 comes as NEW connection. We alter it but may be some collision happens for both conntracks and the second conntrack gets destroyed immediately. The connection stucks too. IPVS: one-packet scheduling Allow one-packet scheduling for UDP connections. When the fwmark-based or normal virtual service is marked with '-o' or '--ops' options all connections are created only to schedule one packet. Useful to schedule UDP packets from same client port to different real servers. Recommended with RR or WRR schedulers (the connections are not visible with ipvsadm -L). include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. ipvs: fix synchronization on connection close commit 9d3a0de makes slaves expire as they would do on the master with much shorter timeouts. But it introduces another problem: When we close a connection, on master server the connection became CLOSE_WAIT/TIME_WAIT, it was synced to slaves, but if master is finished within it's timeouts (CLOSE), it will not be synced to slaves. Then slaves will be kept on CLOSE_WAIT/TIME_WAIT until timeout reaches. Thus we should also sync with CLOSE. IPVS: Add handling of incoming ICMPV6 messages Add handling of incoming ICMPv6 messages. This follows the handling of IPv4 ICMP messages. Amongst ther things this problem allows IPVS to behave sensibly when an ICMPV6_PKT_TOOBIG message is received: This message is received when a realserver sends a packet >PMTU to the client. The hop on this path with insufficient MTU will generate an ICMPv6 Packet Too Big message back to the VIP. The LVS server receives this message, but the call to the function handling this has been missing. Thus, IPVS fails to forward the message to the real server, which then does not adjust the path MTU. This patch adds the missing call to ip_vs_in_icmp_v6() in ip_vs_in() to handle this situation. Thanks to Rob Gallagher from HEAnet for reporting this issue and for testing this patch in production (with direct routing mode). ipvs: Fix IPv4 FWMARK virtual services This fixes the use of fwmarks to denote IPv4 virtual services which was unfortunately broken as a result of the integration of IPv6 support into IPVS, which was included in 2.6.28. The problem arises because fwmarks are stored in the 4th octet of a union nf_inet_addr .all, however in the case of IPv4 only the first octet, corresponding to .ip, is assigned and compared. In other words, using .all = { 0, 0, 0, htonl(svc->fwmark) always results in a value of 0 (32bits) being stored for IPv4. This means that one fwmark can be used, as it ends up being mapped to 0, but things break down when multiple fwmarks are used, as they all end up being mapped to 0. As fwmarks are 32bits a reasonable fix seems to be to just store the fwmark in .ip, and comparing and storing .ip when fwmarks are used. This patch makes the assumption that in calls to ip_vs_ct_in_get() and ip_vs_sched_persist() if the proto parameter is IPPROTO_IP then we are dealing with an fwmark. I believe this is valid as ip_vs_in() does fairly strict filtering on the protocol and IPPROTO_IP should not be used in these calls unless explicitly passed when making these calls for fwmarks in ip_vs_sched_persist().
