mptcp: corner case locking for rx path fields initialization Most MPTCP-level related fields are under the mptcp data lock protection, but are written one-off without such lock at MPC complete time, both for the client and the server Leverage the mptcp_propagate_state() infrastructure to move such initialization under the proper lock client-wise. The server side critical init steps are done by mptcp_subflow_fully_established(): ensure the caller properly held the relevant lock, and avoid acquiring the same lock in the nested scopes. There are no real potential races, as write access to such fields is implicitly serialized by the MPTCP state machine; the primary goal is consistency. mptcp: Avoid acquiring PM lock for subflow priority changes The in-kernel path manager code for changing subflow flags acquired both the msk socket lock and the PM lock when possibly changing the "backup" and "fullmesh" flags. mptcp_pm_nl_mp_prio_send_ack() does not access anything protected by the PM lock, and it must release and reacquire the PM lock. By pushing the PM lock to where it is needed in mptcp_pm_nl_fullmesh(), the lock is only acquired when the fullmesh flag is changed and the backup flag code no longer has to release and reacquire the PM lock. The change in locking context requires the MIB update to be modified - move that to a better location instead. mptcp: clarify when options can be used RFC8684 doesn't seem to clearly specify which MPTCP options can be used together. Some options are mutually exclusive -- e.g. MP_CAPABLE and MP_JOIN --, some can be used together -- e.g. DSS + MP_PRIO --, some can but we prefer not to -- e.g. DSS + ADD_ADDR -- and some have to be used together at some points -- e.g. MP_FAIL and DSS. We need to clarify this as a base before allowing other modifications. For example, does it make sense to send a RM_ADDR with an MPC or MPJ? This remains open for possible future discussions. mptcp: do not shrink snd_nxt when recovering When recovering after a link failure, snd_nxt should not be set to a lower value. Else, update of snd_nxt is broken because: msk->snd_nxt += ret; (where ret is number of bytes sent) assumes that snd_nxt always moves forward. After reduction, its possible that snd_nxt update gets out of sync: dfrag we just sent might have had a data sequence number even past recovery_snd_nxt. This change factors the common msk state update to a helper and updates snd_nxt based on the current dfrag data sequence number. The conditional is required for the recovery phase where we may re-transmit old dfrags that are before current snd_nxt. After this change, snd_nxt only moves forward and covers all in-sequence data that was transmitted. recovery_snd_nxt is retained to detect when recovery has completed. mptcp: handle pending data on closed subflow The PM can close active subflow, e.g. due to ingress RM_ADDR option. Such subflow could carry data still unacked at the MPTCP-level, both in the write and the rtx_queue, which has never reached the other peer. Currently the mptcp-level retransmission will deliver such data, but at a very low rate (at most 1 DSM for each MPTCP rtx interval). We can speed-up the recovery a lot, moving all the unacked in the tcp write_queue, so that it will be pushed again via other subflows, at the speed allowed by them. It was then OK to enable the "fully_established" flag on the MPTCP socket. Still, best to check if the ADD_ADDR looks valid by looking if it contains an HMAC (no 'echo' bit). If an ADD_ADDR echo is received while we are not in "fully established" mode, it is strange and then we should not switch to this mode now. But that is not enough. On one hand, the path-manager has be notified the state has changed. On the other hand, the "fully_established" flag on the subflow socket should be turned on as well not to re-send the MP_CAPABLE 3rd ACK content with the next ACK. mptcp: Fix out of bounds when parsing TCP options The TCP option parser in mptcp (mptcp_get_options) could read one byte out of bounds. When the length is 1, the execution flow gets into the loop, reads one byte of the opcode, and if the opcode is neither TCPOPT_EOL nor TCPOPT_NOP, it reads one more byte, which exceeds the length of 1. This fix is inspired by commit 9609dad263f8 ("ipv4: tcp_input: fix stack out of bounds when parsing TCP options."). mptcp: validate 'id' when stopping the ADD_ADDR retransmit timer when Linux receives an echo-ed ADD_ADDR, it checks the IP address against the list of "announced" addresses. In case of a positive match, the timer that handles retransmissions is stopped regardless of the 'Address Id' in the received packet: this behaviour does not comply with RFC8684 3.4.1. mptcp: add mptcp reset option support The MPTCP reset option allows to carry a mptcp-specific error code that provides more information on the nature of a connection reset. Reset option data received gets stored in the subflow context so it can be sent to userspace via the 'subflow closed' netlink event. When a subflow is closed, the desired error code that should be sent to the peer is also placed in the subflow context structure. mptcp: fix length of MP_PRIO suboption With version 0 of the protocol it was legal to encode the 'Subflow Id' in the MP_PRIO suboption, to specify which subflow would change its 'Backup' flag. This has been removed from v1 specification: thus, according to RFC 8684 §3.3.8, the resulting 'Length' for MP_PRIO changed from 4 to 3 byte. Current Linux generates / parses MP_PRIO according to the old spec, using 'Length' equal to 4, and hardcoding 1 as 'Subflow Id'; RFC compliance can improve if we change 'Length' in other to become 3, leaving a 'Nop' after the MP_PRIO suboption. MPTCP will try to push frames on such subflow and will fail. Pending frames will be pushed only after receiving a window update on a subflow with some wspace available. Overall the above could lead to suboptimal aggregate bandwidth usage. Instead, we should try to push pending frames as soon as the subflow reaches both conditions mentioned above. We can finally enable self-tests with asymmetric links, as the above makes them finally pass. This change addresses the issue delaying the MPC socket insertion in conn_list at accept time - that is, partially reverting the blamed commit. We must additionally ensure that mptcp_pm_fully_established() happens after accept() time, or the PM will not be able to handle properly such event - conn_list could be empty otherwise. In the receive path, we check the subflow list node to ensure it is out of the listener queue. Be sure client subflows do not match transiently such condition moving them into the join list earlier at creation time. Since we now have multiple mptcp_pm_fully_established() call sites from different code-paths, said helper can now race with itself. Use an additional PM status bit to avoid multiple notifications. mptcp: use mptcp release_cb for delayed tasks We have some tasks triggered by the subflow receive path which require to access the msk socket status, specifically: mptcp_clean_una() and mptcp_push_pending() We have almost everything in place to defer to the msk release_cb such tasks when the msk sock is owned. Since the worker is no more used to clean the acked data, for fallback sockets we need to explicitly flush them. As an added bonus we can move the wake-up code in __mptcp_clean_una(), simplify a lot mptcp_poll() and move the timer update under the data lock. The worker is now used only to process and send DATA_FIN packets and do the mptcp-level retransmissions. mptcp: refine MPTCP-level ack scheduling Send timely MPTCP-level ack is somewhat difficult when the insertion into the msk receive level is performed by the worker. It needs TCP-level dup-ack to notify the MPTCP-level ack_seq increase, as both the TCP-level ack seq and the rcv window are unchanged. We can actually avoid processing incoming data with the worker, and let the subflow or recevmsg() send ack as needed. When recvmsg() moves the skbs inside the msk receive queue, the msk space is still unchanged, so tcp_cleanup_rbuf() could end-up skipping TCP-level ack generation. Anyway, when __mptcp_move_skbs() is invoked, a known amount of bytes is going to be consumed soon: we update rcv wnd computation taking them in account. Additionally we need to explicitly trigger tcp_cleanup_rbuf() when recvmsg() consumes a significant amount of the receive buffer. mptcp: send out dedicated ADD_ADDR packet When ADD_ADDR suboption includes an IPv6 address, the size is 28 octets. It will not fit when other MPTCP suboptions are included in this packet, e.g. DSS. So here we send out an ADD_ADDR dedicated packet to carry only ADD_ADDR suboption, no other MPTCP suboptions. In mptcp_pm_announce_addr, we check whether this is an IPv6 ADD_ADDR. If it is, we set the flag MPTCP_ADD_ADDR_IPV6 to true. Then we call mptcp_pm_nl_add_addr_send_ack to sent out a new pure ACK packet. In mptcp_established_options_add_addr, we check whether this is a pure ACK packet for ADD_ADDR. If it is, we drop all other MPTCP suboptions in this packet, only put ADD_ADDR suboption in it. crypto: sha - split sha.h into sha1.h and sha2.h Currently <crypto/sha.h> contains declarations for both SHA-1 and SHA-2, and <crypto/sha3.h> contains declarations for SHA-3. This organization is inconsistent, but more importantly SHA-1 is no longer considered to be cryptographically secure. So to the extent possible, SHA-1 shouldn't be grouped together with any of the other SHA versions, and usage of it should be phased out. Therefore, split <crypto/sha.h> into two headers <crypto/sha1.h> and <crypto/sha2.h>, and make everyone explicitly specify whether they want the declarations for SHA-1, SHA-2, or both. This avoids making the SHA-1 declarations visible to files that don't want anything to do with SHA-1. It also prepares for potentially moving sha1.h into a new insecure/ or dangerous/ directory. mptcp: refactor shutdown and close We must not close the subflows before all the MPTCP level data, comprising the DATA_FIN has been acked at the MPTCP level, otherwise we could be unable to retransmit as needed. __mptcp_wr_shutdown() shutdown is responsible to check for the correct status and close all subflows. Is called by the output path after spooling any data and at shutdown/close time. In a similar way, __mptcp_destroy_sock() is responsible to clean-up the MPTCP level status, and is called when the msk transition to TCP_CLOSE. The protocol level close() does not force anymore the TCP_CLOSE status, but orphan the msk socket and all the subflows. Orphaned msk sockets are forciby closed after a timeout or when all MPTCP-level data is acked. There is a caveat about keeping the orphaned subflows around: the TCP stack can asynchronusly call tcp_cleanup_ulp() on them via tcp_close(). To prevent accessing freed memory on later MPTCP level operations, the msk acquires a reference to each subflow socket and prevent subflow_ulp_release() from releasing the subflow context before __mptcp_destroy_sock(). The additional subflow references are released by __mptcp_done() and the async ULP release is detected checking ULP ops. If such field has been already cleared by the ULP release path, the dangling context is freed directly by __mptcp_done(). mptcp: Use full MPTCP-level disconnect state machine RFC 8684 appendix D describes the connection state machine for MPTCP. This patch implements the DATA_FIN / DATA_ACK exchanges and MPTCP-level socket state changes described in that appendix, rather than simply sending DATA_FIN along with TCP FIN when disconnecting subflows. DATA_FIN is now sent and acknowledged before shutting down the subflows. Received DATA_FIN information (if not part of a data packet) is written to the MPTCP socket when the incoming DSS option is parsed by the subflow, and the MPTCP worker is scheduled to process the flag. DATA_FIN received as part of a full DSS mapping will be handled when the mapping is processed. The DATA_FIN is acknowledged by the worker if the reader is caught up. If there is still data to be moved to the MPTCP-level queue, ack_seq will be incremented to account for the DATA_FIN when it reaches the end of the stream and a DATA_ACK will be sent to the peer. mptcp: fix DSS map generation on fin retransmission The RFC 8684 mandates that no-data DATA FIN packets should carry a DSS with 0 sequence number and data len equal to 1. Currently, on FIN retransmission we re-use the existing mapping; if the previous fin transmission was part of a partially acked data packet, we could end-up writing in the egress packet a non-compliant DSS. mptcp: Use 32-bit DATA_ACK when possible RFC8684 allows to send 32-bit DATA_ACKs as long as the peer is not sending 64-bit data-sequence numbers. The 64-bit DSN is only there for extreme scenarios when a very high throughput subflow is combined with a long-RTT subflow such that the high-throughput subflow wraps around the 32-bit sequence number space within an RTT of the high-RTT subflow. It is thus a rare scenario and we should try to use the 32-bit DATA_ACK instead as long as possible. It allows to reduce the TCP-option overhead by 4 bytes, thus makes space for an additional SACK-block. Instead we move the MPTCP option parsing into the already existing mptcp ingress hook, so that we need to clear the fields in a single place. This allows us dropping an MPTCP hook from the TCP code and removing the quite large mptcp_options_received from the tcp_sock struct. On the flip side, the MPTCP sockets will traverse the option space twice (in tcp_parse_option() and in mptcp_incoming_options(). That looks acceptable: we already do that for syn and 3rd ack packets, plain TCP socket will benefit from it, and even MPTCP sockets will experience better code locality, reducing the jumps between TCP and MPTCP code. v1 -> v2: - rebased on current '-net' tree Fixes: 648ef4b88673 ("mptcp: Implement MPTCP receive path") Signed-off-by: Paolo Abeni <pabeni@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: David S. mptcp: Add handling of outgoing MP_JOIN requests Subflow creation may be initiated by the path manager when the primary connection is fully established and a remote address has been received via ADD_ADDR. Create an in-kernel sock and use kernel_connect() to initiate connection. Passive sockets can't acquire the mptcp socket lock at subflow creation time, so an additional list protected by a new spinlock is used to track the MPJ subflows. Such list is spliced into conn_list tail every time the msk socket lock is acquired, so that it will not interfere with data flow on the original connection. Data flow and connection failover not addressed by this commit. mptcp: Add path manager interface Add enough of a path manager interface to allow sending of ADD_ADDR when an incoming MPTCP connection is created. Capable of sending only a single IPv4 ADD_ADDR option. The 'pm_data' element of the connection sock will need to be expanded to handle multiple interfaces and IPv6. Partial processing of the incoming ADD_ADDR is included so the path manager notification of that event happens at the proper time, which involves validating the incoming address information. This is a skeleton interface definition for events generated by MPTCP. mptcp: always include dack if possible. Currently passive MPTCP socket can skip including the DACK option - if the peer sends data before accept() completes. The above happens because the msk 'can_ack' flag is set only after the accept() call. Such missing DACK option may cause - as per RFC spec - unwanted fallback to TCP. This change addresses the issue using the key material available in the current subflow, if any, to create a suitable dack option when msk ack seq is not yet available. v1 -> v2: - adavance the generated ack after the initial MPC packet Fixes: d22f4988ffec ("mptcp: process MP_CAPABLE data option") Signed-off-by: Paolo Abeni <pabeni@redhat.com> Reviewed-by: Mat Martineau <mathew.j.martineau@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: David S. mptcp: Only send DATA_FIN with final mapping When a DATA_FIN is sent in a MPTCP DSS option that contains a data mapping, the DATA_FIN consumes one byte of space in the mapping. In this case, the DATA_FIN should only be included in the DSS option if its sequence number aligns with the end of the mapped data. Otherwise the subflow can send an incorrect implicit sequence number for the DATA_FIN, and the DATA_ACK for that sequence number would not close the MPTCP-level connection correctly. mptcp: process MP_CAPABLE data option This patch implements the handling of MP_CAPABLE + data option, as per RFC 6824 bis / RFC 8684: MPTCP v1. On the server side we can receive the remote key after that the connection is established. We need to explicitly track the 'missing remote key' status and avoid emitting a mptcp ack until we get such info. When a late/retransmitted/OoO pkt carrying MP_CAPABLE[+data] option is received, we have to propagate the mptcp seq number info to the msk socket. To avoid ABBA locking issue, explicitly check for that in recvmsg(), where we own msk and subflow sock locks. The above also means that an established mp_capable subflow - still waiting for the remote key - can be 'downgraded' to plain TCP. Such change could potentially block a reader waiting for new data forever - as they hook to msk, while later wake-up after the downgrade will be on subflow only. The above issue is not handled here, we likely have to get rid of msk->fallback to handle that cleanly. Signed-off-by: Christoph Paasch <cpaasch@apple.com> Signed-off-by: David S. mptcp: parse and emit MP_CAPABLE option according to v1 spec This implements MP_CAPABLE options parsing and writing according to RFC 6824 bis / RFC 8684: MPTCP v1. Local key is sent on syn/ack, and both keys are sent on 3rd ack. MP_CAPABLE messages len are updated accordingly. We need the skbuff to correctly emit the above, so we push the skbuff struct as an argument all the way from tcp code to the relevant mptcp callbacks. When processing incoming MP_CAPABLE + data, build a full blown DSS-like map info, to simplify later processing. On child socket creation, we need to record the remote key, if available. mptcp: Implement MPTCP receive path Parses incoming DSS options and populates outgoing MPTCP ACK fields. MPTCP fields are parsed from the TCP option header and placed in an skb extension, allowing the upper MPTCP layer to access MPTCP options after the skb has gone through the TCP stack. The subflow implements its own data_ready() ops, which ensures that the pending data is in sequence - according to MPTCP seq number - dropping out-of-seq skbs. The DATA_READY bit flag is set if this is the case. This allows the MPTCP socket layer to determine if more data is available without having to consult the individual subflows. It additionally validates the current mapping and propagates EoF events to the connection socket. mptcp: Write MPTCP DSS headers to outgoing data packets Per-packet metadata required to write the MPTCP DSS option is written to the skb_ext area. One write to the socket may contain more than one packet of data, which is copied to page fragments and mapped in to MPTCP DSS segments with size determined by the available page fragments and the maximum mapping length allowed by the MPTCP specification. If do_tcp_sendpages() splits a DSS segment in to multiple skbs, that's ok - the later skbs can either have duplicated DSS mapping information or none at all, and the receiver can handle that. The current implementation uses the subflow frag cache and tcp sendpages to avoid excessive code duplication. More work is required to ensure that it works correctly under memory pressure and to support MPTCP-level retransmissions. The MPTCP DSS checksum is not yet implemented.
