Issue description and patch: IPSTATS_MIB_OUTPKTS("OutRequests") is counted with IPSTATS_MIB_OUTOCTETS ("OutOctets") in ip_finish_output2(). According to RFC 4293, it is "OutOctets" counted with "OutTransmits" but not "OutRequests". "OutRequests" does not include any datagrams counted in "ForwDatagrams". ipSystemStatsOutOctets OBJECT-TYPE DESCRIPTION "The total number of octets in IP datagrams delivered to the lower layers for transmission. Octets from datagrams counted in ipIfStatsOutTransmits MUST be counted here. ipSystemStatsOutRequests OBJECT-TYPE DESCRIPTION "The total number of IP datagrams that local IP user- protocols (including ICMP) supplied to IP in requests for transmission. Note that this counter does not include any datagrams counted in ipSystemStatsOutForwDatagrams. So do patch to define IPSTATS_MIB_OUTPKTS to "OutTransmits" and add IPSTATS_MIB_OUTREQUESTS for "OutRequests". Add IPSTATS_MIB_OUTREQUESTS counter in __ip_local_out() for ipv4 and add IPSTATS_MIB_OUT counter in ip6_finish_output2() for ipv6. icmp: Add counters for rate limits There are multiple ICMP rate limiting mechanisms: * Global limits: net.ipv4.icmp_msgs_burst/icmp_msgs_per_sec * v4 per-host limits: net.ipv4.icmp_ratelimit/ratemask * v6 per-host limits: net.ipv6.icmp_ratelimit/ratemask However, when ICMP output is limited, there is no way to tell which limit has been hit or even if the limits are responsible for the lack of ICMP output. Add counters for each of the cases above. As we are within local_bh_disable(), use the __INC stats variant. Example output: # nstat -sz "*RateLimit*" IcmpOutRateLimitGlobal 134 0.0 IcmpOutRateLimitHost 770 0.0 Icmp6OutRateLimitHost 84 0.0 Signed-off-by: Jamie Bainbridge <jamie.bainbridge@gmail.com> Suggested-by: Abhishek Rawal <rawal.abhishek92@gmail.com> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/273b32241e6b7fdc5c609e6f5ebc68caf3994342.1674605770.git.jamie.bainbridge@gmail.com Signed-off-by: Paolo Abeni <pabeni@redhat.com>

net: clean up snmp stats code commit 8f0ea0fe3a036a47767f9c80e (snmp: reduce percpu needs by 50%) reduced snmp array size to 1, so technically it doesn't have to be an array any more. What's more, after the following commit: commit 933393f58fef9963eac61db8093689544e29a600 Date: Thu Dec 22 11:58:51 2011 -0600 percpu: Remove irqsafe_cpu_xxx variants We simply say that regular this_cpu use must be safe regardless of preemption and interrupt state. That has no material change for x86 and s390 implementations of this_cpu operations. However, arches that do not provide their own implementation for this_cpu operations will now get code generated that disables interrupts instead of preemption. probably no arch wants to have SNMP_ARRAY_SZ == 2. At least after almost 3 years, no one complains. So, just convert the array to a single pointer and remove snmp_mib_init() and snmp_mib_free() as well. ipv6: reduce percpu needs for icmpv6msg mibs Reading /proc/net/snmp6 on a machine with a lot of cpus is very expensive (can be ~88000 us). This is because ICMPV6MSG MIB uses 4096 bytes per cpu, and folding values for all possible cpus can read 16 Mbytes of memory (32MBytes on non x86 arches) ICMP messages are not considered as fast path on a typical server, and eventually few cpus handle them anyway. We can afford an atomic operation instead of using percpu data. This saves 4096 bytes per cpu and per network namespace. Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <eric.dumazet@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. ipv6: reduce per device ICMP mib sizes ipv6 has per device ICMP SNMP counters, taking too much space because they use percpu storage. needed size per device is : (512+4)*sizeof(long)*number_of_possible_cpus*2 On a 32bit kernel, 16 possible cpus, this wastes more than 64kbytes of memory per ipv6 enabled network device, taken in vmalloc pool. Since ICMP messages are rare, just use shared counters (atomic_long_t) Per network space ICMP counters are still using percpu memory, we might also convert them to shared counters in a future patch. snmp: 64bit ipstats_mib for all arches /proc/net/snmp and /proc/net/netstat expose SNMP counters. Width of these counters is either 32 or 64 bits, depending on the size of "unsigned long" in kernel. This means user program parsing these files must already be prepared to deal with 64bit values, regardless of user program being 32 or 64 bit. This patch introduces 64bit snmp values for IPSTAT mib, where some counters can wrap pretty fast if they are 32bit wide. # netstat -s|egrep "InOctets|OutOctets" InOctets: 244068329096 OutOctets: 244069348848 Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <eric.dumazet@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. First, udplite is of such small cost, and it is a core protocol just like TCP and normal UDP are. We spent enormous amounts of effort to make udplite share as much code with core UDP as possible. All of that work is less valuable if we're just going to slap a config option on udplite support. It is also causing build failures, as reported on linux-next, showing that the changeset was not tested very well. In fact, this is the second build failure resulting from the udplite change. Finally, the config options provided was a bool, instead of a modular option. Meaning the udplite code does not even get build tested by allmodconfig builds, and furthermore the user is not presented with a reasonable modular build option which is particularly needed by distribution vendors. [NET]: Define infrastructure to keep 'inuse' changes in an efficent SMP/NUMA way. "struct proto" currently uses an array stats[NR_CPUS] to track change on 'inuse' sockets per protocol. If NR_CPUS is big, this means we use a big memory area for this. Moreover, all this memory area is located on a single node on NUMA machines, increasing memory pressure on the boot node. In this patch, I tried to : - Keep a fast !CONFIG_SMP implementation - Keep a fast CONFIG_SMP implementation for often used protocols (tcp,udp,raw,...) - Introduce a NUMA efficient implementation Some helper macros are defined in include/net/sock.h These macros take into account CONFIG_SMP If a "struct proto" is declared without using DEFINE_PROTO_INUSE / REF_PROTO_INUSE macros, it will automatically use a default implementation, using a dynamically allocated percpu zone. This default implementation will be NUMA efficient, but might use 32/64 bytes per possible cpu because of current alloc_percpu() implementation. However it still should be better than previous implementation based on stats[NR_CPUS] field. When a "struct proto" is changed to use the new macros, we use a single static "int" percpu variable, lowering the memory and cpu costs, still preserving NUMA efficiency. Like with the previous patch this mostly consists of hunks like - write_lock(&ipfrag_lock); + write_lock(&ip4_frags.lock); To address the issue with exporting the number of queues and the amount of memory occupied by queues outside the .c file they are declared in, I introduce a couple of helpers. This table includes entries for both IPv4 and IPv6, and requires counting of all ICMP types, whether or not the machine implements the type. These patches "remove" (but not really) the existing counters, and replace them with the ICMPMsgStats tables for v4 and v6. It includes the named counters in the /proc places they were, but gets the values for them from the new tables. It also counts packets generated from raw socket output (e.g., OutEchoes, MLD queries, RA's from radvd, etc). Changes: 1) create icmpmsg_statistics mib 2) create icmpv6msg_statistics mib 3) modify existing counters to use these 4) modify /proc/net/snmp to add "IcmpMsg" with all ICMP types listed by number for easy SNMP parsing 5) modify /proc/net/snmp printing for "Icmp" to get the named data from new counters. [NET]: Make /proc/net per network namespace This patch makes /proc/net per network namespace. It modifies the global variables proc_net and proc_net_stat to be per network namespace. The proc_net file helpers are modified to take a network namespace argument, and all of their callers are fixed to pass &init_net for that argument. This ensures that all of the /proc/net files are only visible and usable in the initial network namespace until the code behind them has been updated to be handle multiple network namespaces. Making /proc/net per namespace is necessary as at least some files in /proc/net depend upon the set of network devices which is per network namespace, and even more files in /proc/net have contents that are relevant to a single network namespace. [IPV6]: Track device renames in snmp6. When network device's are renamed, the IPV6 snmp6 code gets confused. It doesn't track name changes so it will OOPS when network device's are removed. [IPV6]: Consolidate common SNMP code This patch moves the non-proc SNMP code into addrconf.c and reuses IPv4 SNMP code where applicable. As a result we can skip proc.o if /proc is disabled. Note that I've made a number of functions static since they're only used by addrconf.c for now. If they ever get used elsewhere we can always remove the static. [PATCH] remove many unneeded #includes of sched.h After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes. There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the course of cleaning it up. To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble. Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha, arm, i386, ia64, mips, powerpc, and x86_64 with allnoconfig, defconfig, allmodconfig, and allyesconfig as well as a few randconfigs on x86_64 and all configs in arch/arm/configs on arm. I also checked that no new warnings were introduced by the patch (actually, some warnings are removed that were emitted by unnecessarily included header files). [PATCH] mark struct file_operations const 7 Many struct file_operations in the kernel can be "const". Marking them const moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential dirty data. In addition it'll catch accidental writes at compile time to these shared resources. [NET]: Supporting UDP-Lite (RFC 3828) in Linux This is a revision of the previously submitted patch, which alters the way files are organized and compiled in the following manner: * UDP and UDP-Lite now use separate object files * source file dependencies resolved via header files net/ipv{4,6}/udp_impl.h * order of inclusion files in udp.c/udplite.c adapted accordingly [NET/IPv4]: Support for the UDP-Lite protocol (RFC 3828) This patch adds support for UDP-Lite to the IPv4 stack, provided as an extension to the existing UDPv4 code: * generic routines are all located in net/ipv4/udp.c * UDP-Lite specific routines are in net/ipv4/udplite.c * MIB/statistics support in /proc/net/snmp and /proc/net/udplite * shared API with extensions for partial checksum coverage [NET/IPv6]: Extension for UDP-Lite over IPv6 It extends the existing UDPv6 code base with support for UDP-Lite in the same manner as per UDPv4. In particular, * UDPv6 generic and shared code is in net/ipv6/udp.c * UDP-Litev6 specific extensions are in net/ipv6/udplite.c * MIB/statistics support in /proc/net/snmp6 and /proc/net/udplite6 * support for IPV6_ADDRFORM * aligned the coding style of protocol initialisation with af_inet6.c * made the error handling in udpv6_queue_rcv_skb consistent; to return `-1' on error on all error cases * consolidation of shared code [NET]: UDP-Lite Documentation and basic XFRM/Netfilter support The UDP-Lite patch further provides * API documentation for UDP-Lite * basic xfrm support * basic netfilter support for IPv4 and IPv6 (LOG target) Signed-off-by: Gerrit Renker <gerrit@erg.abdn.ac.uk> Signed-off-by: David S. [PATCH] for_each_possible_cpu: network codes for_each_cpu() actually iterates across all possible CPUs. We've had mistakes in the past where people were using for_each_cpu() where they should have been iterating across only online or present CPUs. This is inefficient and possibly buggy. We're renaming for_each_cpu() to for_each_possible_cpu() to avoid this in the future. This patch replaces for_each_cpu with for_each_possible_cpu under /net Signed-off-by: KAMEZAWA Hiroyuki <kamezawa.hiroyu@jp.fujitsu.com> Acked-by: "David S. [PATCH] percpu data: only iterate over possible CPUs percpu_data blindly allocates bootmem memory to store NR_CPUS instances of cpudata, instead of allocating memory only for possible cpus. As a preparation for changing that, we need to convert various 0 -> NR_CPUS loops to use for_each_cpu(). (The above only applies to users of asm-generic/percpu.h. powerpc has gone it alone and is presently only allocating memory for present CPUs, so it's currently corrupting memory). [NET]: Wider use of for_each_*cpu() In 'net' change the explicit use of for-loops and NR_CPUS into the general for_each_cpu() or for_each_online_cpu() constructs, as appropriate. This widens the scope of potential future optimizations of the general constructs, as well as takes advantage of the existing optimizations of first_cpu() and next_cpu(), which is advantageous when the true CPU count is much smaller than NR_CPUS. Linux-2.6.12-rc2 Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
