vlan: move dev_put into vlan_dev_uninit Shuang Li reported an QinQ issue by simply doing: # ip link add dummy0 type dummy # ip link add link dummy0 name dummy0.1 type vlan id 1 # ip link add link dummy0.1 name dummy0.1.2 type vlan id 2 # rmmod 8021q unregister_netdevice: waiting for dummy0.1 to become free. Usage count = 1 When rmmods 8021q, all vlan devs are deleted from their real_dev's vlan grp and added into list_kill by unregister_vlan_dev(). dummy0.1 is unregistered before dummy0.1.2, as it's using for_each_netdev() in __rtnl_kill_links(). When unregisters dummy0.1, dummy0.1.2 is not unregistered in the event of NETDEV_UNREGISTER, as it's been deleted from dummy0.1's vlan grp. However, due to dummy0.1.2 still holding dummy0.1, dummy0.1 will keep waiting in netdev_wait_allrefs(), while dummy0.1.2 will never get unregistered and release dummy0.1, as it delays dev_put until calling dev->priv_destructor, vlan_dev_free(). This issue was introduced by Commit 563bcbae3ba2 ("net: vlan: fix a UAF in vlan_dev_real_dev()"), and this patch is to fix it by moving dev_put() into vlan_dev_uninit(), which is called after NETDEV_UNREGISTER event but before netdev_wait_allrefs(). net: change addr_list_lock back to static key The dynamic key update for addr_list_lock still causes troubles, for example the following race condition still exists: CPU 0: CPU 1: (RCU read lock) (RTNL lock) dev_mc_seq_show() netdev_update_lockdep_key() -> lockdep_unregister_key() -> netif_addr_lock_bh() because lockdep doesn't provide an API to update it atomically. Therefore, we have to move it back to static keys and use subclass for nest locking like before. In commit 1a33e10e4a95 ("net: partially revert dynamic lockdep key changes"), I already reverted most parts of commit ab92d68fc22f ("net: core: add generic lockdep keys"). This patch reverts the rest and also part of commit f3b0a18bb6cb ("net: remove unnecessary variables and callback"). After this patch, addr_list_lock changes back to using static keys and subclasses to satisfy lockdep. Thanks to dev->lower_level, we do not have to change back to ->ndo_get_lock_subclass(). And hopefully this reduces some syzbot lockdep noises too. In the previous patch, new {lower/upper}_level variables are added and they replace old private nest_level variable. So, this patch removes all 'nest_level' variables. In order to avoid lockdep warning, ->ndo_get_lock_subclass() was added to get lockdep subclass value, which is actually lower nested depth value. But now, they use the dynamic lockdep key to avoid lockdep warning instead of the subclass. So, this patch removes ->ndo_get_lock_subclass() callback. In the current code, these interfaces have their own lockdep class keys and these manage itself. So that there are so many duplicate code around the /driver/net and /net/. This patch adds new generic lockdep keys and some helper functions for it. This patch does below changes. a) Add lockdep class keys in struct net_device - qdisc_running, xmit, addr_list, qdisc_busylock - these keys are used as dynamic lockdep key. b) When net_device is being allocated, lockdep keys are registered. - alloc_netdev_mqs() c) When net_device is being free'd llockdep keys are unregistered. - free_netdev() d) Add generic lockdep key helper function - netdev_register_lockdep_key() - netdev_unregister_lockdep_key() - netdev_update_lockdep_key() e) Remove unnecessary generic lockdep macro and functions f) Remove unnecessary lockdep code of each interfaces. vlan: conditional inclusion of FCoE hooks to match netdevice.h and bnx2x Way back in 3c9c36bcedd426f2be2826da43e5163de61735f7 the ndo_fcoe_get_wwn pointer was switched from depending on CONFIG_FCOE to CONFIG_LIBFCOE in order to allow building FCoE support into the bnx2x driver and used by bnx2fc without including the generic software fcoe module. But, FCoE is generally used over an 802.1q VLAN, and the implementation of ndo_fcoe_get_wwn in the 8021q module was not similarly changed. The result is that if CONFIG_FCOE is disabled, then bnz2fc cannot make a call to ndo_fcoe_get_wwn through the 8021q interface to the underlying bnx2x interface. The bnx2fc driver then falls back to a potentially different mapping of Ethernet MAC to Fibre Channel WWN, creating an incompatibility with the fabric and target configurations when compared to the WWNs used by pre-boot firmware and differently-configured kernels. So make the conditional inclusion of FCoE code in 8021q match the conditional inclusion in netdevice.h Signed-off-by: Chris Leech <cleech@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: David S. If we let VLANs have the same tunnel offload capabilities as their lower device, throughput can improve significantly when CPU is limited on the transmitter side. - set NETIF_F_GSO_ENCAP_ALL bits in the VLAN 'hw_features', to ensure that 'features' will have those bits zeroed only when the lower device has no hardware support for tunnel encapsulation. - for the same reason, copy GSO-related bits of 'hw_enc_features' from lower device to VLAN, and ensure to update that value when the lower device changes its features. - set NETIF_F_HW_CSUM bit in the VLAN 'hw_enc_features' if 'real_dev' is able to compute checksums at least for a kind of packets, like done with commit 8403debeead8 ("vlan: Keep NETIF_F_HW_CSUM similar to other software devices"). netpoll: allow cleanup to be synchronous This fixes a problem introduced by: commit 2cde6acd49da ("netpoll: Fix __netpoll_rcu_free so that it can hold the rtnl lock") When using netconsole on a bond, __netpoll_cleanup can asynchronously recurse multiple times, each __netpoll_free_async call can result in more __netpoll_free_async's. This means there is now a race between cleanup_work queues on multiple netpoll_info's on multiple devices and the configuration of a new netpoll. For example if a netconsole is set to enable 0, reconfigured, and enable 1 immediately, this netconsole will likely not work. Given the reason for __netpoll_free_async is it can be called when rtnl is not locked, if it is locked, we should be able to execute synchronously. It appears to be locked everywhere it's called from. Generalize the design pattern from the teaming driver for current callers of __netpoll_free_async. net: Fix inconsistent teardown and release of private netdev state. Network devices can allocate reasources and private memory using netdev_ops->ndo_init(). However, the release of these resources can occur in one of two different places. Either netdev_ops->ndo_uninit() or netdev->destructor(). The decision of which operation frees the resources depends upon whether it is necessary for all netdev refs to be released before it is safe to perform the freeing. netdev_ops->ndo_uninit() presumably can occur right after the NETDEV_UNREGISTER notifier completes and the unicast and multicast address lists are flushed. netdev->destructor(), on the other hand, does not run until the netdev references all go away. Further complicating the situation is that netdev->destructor() almost universally does also a free_netdev(). This creates a problem for the logic in register_netdevice(). Because all callers of register_netdevice() manage the freeing of the netdev, and invoke free_netdev(dev) if register_netdevice() fails. If netdev_ops->ndo_init() succeeds, but something else fails inside of register_netdevice(), it does call ndo_ops->ndo_uninit(). But it is not able to invoke netdev->destructor(). This is because netdev->destructor() will do a free_netdev() and then the caller of register_netdevice() will do the same. However, this means that the resources that would normally be released by netdev->destructor() will not be. Over the years drivers have added local hacks to deal with this, by invoking their destructor parts by hand when register_netdevice() fails. Many drivers do not try to deal with this, and instead we have leaks. Let's close this hole by formalizing the distinction between what private things need to be freed up by netdev->destructor() and whether the driver needs unregister_netdevice() to perform the free_netdev(). netdev->priv_destructor() performs all actions to free up the private resources that used to be freed by netdev->destructor(), except for free_netdev(). netdev->needs_free_netdev is a boolean that indicates whether free_netdev() should be done at the end of unregister_netdevice(). Now, register_netdevice() can sanely release all resources after ndo_ops->ndo_init() succeeds, by invoking both ndo_ops->ndo_uninit() and netdev->priv_destructor(). And at the end of unregister_netdevice(), we invoke netdev->priv_destructor() and optionally call free_netdev(). Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

However, unlike all the othe other software devices, vlans will switch to using IP|IPV6_CSUM features, if the underlying devices uses them. In these situations, checksum offload features on the vlan device can't be controlled via ethtool. This patch makes vlans keep HW_CSUM feature if the underlying device supports checksum offloading. This makes vlan devices behave like other software devices, and restores control to the user. A side-effect is that some offload settings (typically UFO) may be enabled on the vlan device while being disabled on the HW. However, the GSO code will correctly process the packets. net/8021q: create device with all possible features in wanted_features wanted_features is a set of features which have to be enabled if a hardware allows that. Currently when a vlan device is created, its wanted_features is set to current features of its base device. The problem is that the base device can get new features and they are not propagated to vlan-s of this device. If we look at bonding devices, they doesn't have this problem and this patch suggests to fix this issue by the same way how it works for bonding devices. We meet this problem, when we try to create a vlan device over a bonding device. When a system are booting, real devices require time to be initialized, so bonding devices created without slaves, then vlan devices are created and only then ethernet devices are added to the bonding device. As a result we have vlan devices with disabled scatter-gather. * create a bonding device $ ip link add bond0 type bond $ ethtool -k bond0 | grep scatter scatter-gather: off tx-scatter-gather: off [requested on] tx-scatter-gather-fraglist: off [requested on] * create a vlan device $ ip link add link bond0 name bond0.10 type vlan id 10 $ ethtool -k bond0.10 | grep scatter scatter-gather: off tx-scatter-gather: off tx-scatter-gather-fraglist: off * Add a slave device to bond0 $ ip link set dev eth0 master bond0 And now we can see that the bond0 device has got the scatter-gather feature, but the bond0.10 hasn't got it. [root@laptop linux-task-diag]# ethtool -k bond0 | grep scatter scatter-gather: on tx-scatter-gather: on tx-scatter-gather-fraglist: on [root@laptop linux-task-diag]# ethtool -k bond0.10 | grep scatter scatter-gather: off tx-scatter-gather: off tx-scatter-gather-fraglist: off With this patch the vlan device will get all new features from the bonding device. Here is a call trace how features which are set in this patch reach dev->wanted_features. register_netdevice vlan_dev_init ... dev->hw_features = NETIF_F_HW_CSUM | NETIF_F_SG | NETIF_F_FRAGLIST | NETIF_F_GSO_SOFTWARE | NETIF_F_HIGHDMA | NETIF_F_SCTP_CRC | NETIF_F_ALL_FCOE; dev->features |= dev->hw_features; ... dev->wanted_features = dev->features & dev->hw_features; __netdev_update_features(dev); vlan_dev_fix_features ... net: remove ndo_neigh_{construct, destroy} from stacked devices In commit 18bfb924f000 ("net: introduce default neigh_construct/destroy ndo calls for L2 upper devices") we added these ndos to stacked devices such as team and bond, so that calls will be propagated to mlxsw. However, previous commit removed the reliance on these ndos and no new users of these ndos have appeared since above mentioned commit. We can therefore safely remove this dead code. vlan: use a valid default mtu value for vlan over macsec macsec can't cope with mtu frames which need vlan tag insertion, and vlan device set the default mtu equal to the underlying dev's one. By default vlan over macsec devices use invalid mtu, dropping all the large packets. This patch adds a netif helper to check if an upper vlan device needs mtu reduction. The helper is used during vlan devices initialization to set a valid default and during mtu updating to forbid invalid, too bit, mtu values. The helper currently only check if the lower dev is a macsec device, if we get more users, we need to update only the helper (possibly reserving an additional IFF bit). vlan: Propagate MAC address to VLANs The MAC address of the physical interface is only copied to the VLAN when it is first created, resulting in an inconsistency after MAC address changes of only newly created VLANs having an up-to-date MAC. The VLANs should continue inheriting the MAC address of the physical interface until the VLAN MAC address is explicitly set to any value. vlan: Add features for stacked vlan device Stacked vlan devices curretly have few features (GRO, HIGHDMA, LLTX). Since we have software fallbacks in case the NIC can not handle some features for multiple vlans, we can add the same features as the lower vlan devices for stacked vlan devices. This allows stacked vlan devices to create large (GSO) packets and not to segment packets. Those packets will be segmented by software on the real device, or even can be segmented by the NIC once TSO for multiple vlans becomes enabled by the following patches. The exception is those related to FCoE, which does not have a software fallback. Signed-off-by: Toshiaki Makita <makita.toshiaki@lab.ntt.co.jp> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

net: better IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE support Testing xmit_more support with netperf and connected UDP sockets, I found strange dst refcount false sharing. Current handling of IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE is not optimal. Dropping dst in validate_xmit_skb() is certainly too late in case packet was queued by cpu X but dequeued by cpu Y The logical point to take care of drop/force is in __dev_queue_xmit() before even taking qdisc lock. As Julian Anastasov pointed out, need for skb_dst() might come from some packet schedulers or classifiers. This patch adds new helper to cleanly express needs of various drivers or qdiscs/classifiers. Drivers that need skb_dst() in their ndo_start_xmit() should call following helper in their setup instead of the prior : dev->priv_flags &= ~IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE; -> netif_keep_dst(dev); Instead of using a single bit, we use two bits, one being eventually rebuilt in bonding/team drivers. The other one, is permanent and blocks IFF_XMIT_DST_RELEASE being rebuilt in bonding/team. Eventually, we could add something smarter later. vlan: more careful checksum features handling When combining real_dev's features and vlan_features, simple bitwise AND is used. This doesn't work well for checksum offloading features as if one set has NETIF_F_HW_CSUM and the other NETIF_F_IP_CSUM and/or NETIF_F_IPV6_CSUM, we end up with no checksum offloading. However, from the logical point of view (how can_checksum_protocol() works), NETIF_F_HW_CSUM contains the functionality of NETIF_F_IP_CSUM and NETIF_F_IPV6_CSUM so that the result should be IP/IPV6. The new function vlan_dev_get_lockdep_subkey() will return the subkey and make the vlan dev could get a suitable class key. v2->v3: According David's suggestion, I use the subclass to distinguish the lock key for vlan dev and its real dev, but it make no sense, because the difference for subclass in the lock_class_key doesn't mean that the difference class for lock_key, so I use lock_depth to distinguish the different depth for every vlan dev, the same depth of the vlan dev could have the same lock_class_key, I import the MAX_LOCK_DEPTH from the include/linux/sched.h, I think it is enough here, the lockdep should never exceed that value. v3->v4: Add a huge array of locking keys will waste static kernel memory and is not a appropriate method, we could use _nested() variants to fix the problem, calculate the depth for every vlan dev, and use the depth as the subclass for addr_lock_key. vlan: Fix header ops passthru when doing TX VLAN offload. When the vlan code detects that the real device can do TX VLAN offloads in hardware, it tries to arrange for the real device's header_ops to be invoked directly. But it does so illegally, by simply hooking the real device's header_ops up to the VLAN device. This doesn't work because we will end up invoking a set of header_ops routines which expect a device type which matches the real device, but will see a VLAN device instead. Fix this by providing a pass-thru set of header_ops which will arrange to pass the proper real device instead. To facilitate this add a dev_rebuild_header(). There are implementations which provide a ->cache and ->create but not a ->rebuild (f.e. PLIP). So we need a helper function just like dev_hard_header() to avoid crashes. Use this helper in the one existing place where the header_ops->rebuild was being invoked, the neighbour code. With lots of help from Florian Westphal. Signed-off-by: David S. net: Explicitly initialize u64_stats_sync structures for lockdep In order to enable lockdep on seqcount/seqlock structures, we must explicitly initialize any locks. The u64_stats_sync structure, uses a seqcount, and thus we need to introduce a u64_stats_init() function and use it to initialize the structure. This unfortunately adds a lot of fairly trivial initialization code to a number of drivers. But the benefit of ensuring correctness makes this worth while. Because these changes are required for lockdep to be enabled, and the changes are quite trivial, I've not yet split this patch out into 30-some separate patches, as I figured it would be better to get the various maintainers thoughts on how to best merge this change along with the seqcount lockdep enablement. netpoll: Fix __netpoll_rcu_free so that it can hold the rtnl lock __netpoll_rcu_free is used to free netpoll structures when the rtnl_lock is already held. The mechanism is used to asynchronously call __netpoll_cleanup outside of the holding of the rtnl_lock, so as to avoid deadlock. Unfortunately, __netpoll_cleanup modifies pointers (dev->np), which means the rtnl_lock must be held while calling it. Further, it cannot be held, because rcu callbacks may be issued in softirq contexts, which cannot sleep. Fix this by converting the rcu callback to a work queue that is guaranteed to get scheduled in process context, so that we can hold the rtnl properly while calling __netpoll_cleanup Tested successfully by myself. Revert "net: maintain namespace isolation between vlan and real device" This reverts commit 8a83a00b0735190384a348156837918271034144. It causes regressions for S390 devices, because it does an unconditional DST drop on SKBs for vlans and the QETH device needs the neighbour entry hung off the DST for certain things on transmit. Arnd can't remember exactly why he even needed this change. Conflicts: drivers/net/macvlan.c net/8021q/vlan_dev.c net/core/dev.c Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

vlan: Don't propagate flag changes on down interfaces. When (de)configuring a vlan interface, the IFF_ALLMULTI ans IFF_PROMISC flags are cleared or set on the underlying interface. So, if these flags are changed on a vlan interface that is not up, the flags underlying interface might be set or cleared twice. net: consolidate and fix ethtool_ops->get_settings calling This patch does several things: - introduces __ethtool_get_settings which is called from ethtool code and from drivers as well. Put ASSERT_RTNL there. - dev_ethtool_get_settings() is replaced by __ethtool_get_settings() - changes calling in drivers so rtnl locking is respected. In iboe_get_rate was previously ->get_settings() called unlocked. This fixes it. Also prb_calc_retire_blk_tmo() in af_packet.c had the same problem. Also fixed by calling __dev_get_by_index() instead of dev_get_by_index() and holding rtnl_lock for both calls. - introduces rtnl_lock in bnx2fc_vport_create() and fcoe_vport_create() so bnx2fc_if_create() and fcoe_if_create() are called locked as they are from other places. - use __ethtool_get_settings() in bonding code Signed-off-by: Jiri Pirko <jpirko@redhat.com> v2->v3: -removed dev_ethtool_get_settings() -added ASSERT_RTNL into __ethtool_get_settings() -prb_calc_retire_blk_tmo - use __dev_get_by_index() and lock around it and __ethtool_get_settings() call v1->v2: add missing export_symbol Reviewed-by: Ben Hutchings <bhutchings@solarflare.com> [except FCoE bits] Acked-by: Ralf Baechle <ralf@linux-mips.org> Signed-off-by: David S. net: remove NETIF_F_ALL_TX_OFFLOADS There is no software fallback implemented for SCTP or FCoE checksumming, and so it should not be passed on by software devices like bridge or bonding. For VLAN devices, this is different. First, the driver for underlying device should be prepared to get offloaded packets even when the feature is disabled (especially if it advertises it in vlan_features). Second, devices under VLANs do not get replaced without tearing down the VLAN first. This fixes a mess I accidentally introduced while converting bonding to ndo_fix_features. vlan_dev: VLAN 0 should be treated as "no vlan tag" (802.1p packet) - Without the 8021q module loaded in the kernel, all 802.1p packets (VLAN 0 but QoS tagging) are silently discarded (as expected, as the protocol is not loaded). - Without this patch in 8021q module, these packets are forwarded to the module, but they are discarded also if VLAN 0 is not configured, which should not be the default behaviour, as VLAN 0 is not really a VLANed packet but a 802.1p packet. Defining VLAN 0 makes it almost impossible to communicate with mixed 802.1p and non 802.1p devices on the same network due to arp table issues. - Changed logic to skip vlan specific code in vlan_skb_recv if VLAN is 0 and we have not defined a VLAN with ID 0, but we accept the packet with the encapsulated proto and pass it later to netif_rx. - In the vlan device event handler, added some logic to add VLAN 0 to HW filter in devices that support it (this prevented any traffic in VLAN 0 to reach the stack in e1000e with HW filter under 2.6.35, and probably also with other HW filtered cards, so we fix it here). - In the vlan unregister logic, prevent the elimination of VLAN 0 in devices with HW filter. - The default behaviour is to ignore the VLAN 0 tagging and accept the packet as if it was not tagged, but we can still define a VLAN 0 if desired (so it is backwards compatible). net: Get rid of rtnl_link_stats64 / net_device_stats union In commit be1f3c2c027cc5ad735df6a45a542ed1db7ec48b "net: Enable 64-bit net device statistics on 32-bit architectures" I redefined struct net_device_stats so that it could be used in a union with struct rtnl_link_stats64, avoiding the need for explicit copying or conversion between the two. However, this is unsafe because there is no locking required and no lock consistently held around calls to dev_get_stats() and use of the statistics structure it returns. In commit 28172739f0a276eb8d6ca917b3974c2edb036da3 "net: fix 64 bit counters on 32 bit arches" Eric Dumazet dealt with that problem by requiring callers of dev_get_stats() to provide storage for the result. This means that the net_device::stats64 field and the padding in struct net_device_stats are now redundant, so remove them. Update the comment on net_device_ops::ndo_get_stats64 to reflect its new usage. Change dev_txq_stats_fold() to use struct rtnl_link_stats64, since that is what all its callers are really using and it is no longer going to be compatible with struct net_device_stats. Eric Dumazet suggested the separate function for the structure conversion. net: fix 64 bit counters on 32 bit arches There is a small possibility that a reader gets incorrect values on 32 bit arches. SNMP applications could catch incorrect counters when a 32bit high part is changed by another stats consumer/provider. One way to solve this is to add a rtnl_link_stats64 param to all ndo_get_stats64() methods, and also add such a parameter to dev_get_stats(). Rule is that we are not allowed to use dev->stats64 as a temporary storage for 64bit stats, but a caller provided area (usually on stack) Old drivers (only providing get_stats() method) need no changes. include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. net: release dst entry in dev_hard_start_xmit() One point of contention in high network loads is the dst_release() performed when a transmited skb is freed. This is because NIC tx completion calls dev_kree_skb() long after original call to dev_queue_xmit(skb). CPU cache is cold and the atomic op in dst_release() stalls. On SMP, this is quite visible if one CPU is 100% handling softirqs for a network device, since dst_clone() is done by other cpus, involving cache line ping pongs. It seems right place to release dst is in dev_hard_start_xmit(), for most devices but ones that are virtual, and some exceptions. David Miller suggested to define a new device flag, set in alloc_netdev_mq() (so that most devices set it at init time), and carefuly unset in devices which dont want a NULL skb->dst in their ndo_start_xmit(). List of devices that must clear this flag is : - loopback device, because it calls netif_rx() and quoting Patrick : "ip_route_input() doesn't accept loopback addresses, so loopback packets already need to have a dst_entry attached." - appletalk/ipddp.c : needs skb->dst in its xmit function - And all devices that call again dev_queue_xmit() from their xmit function (as some classifiers need skb->dst) : bonding, vlan, macvlan, eql, ifb, hdlc_fr Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <dada1@cosmosbay.com> Signed-off-by: David S. netdev: Allocate multiple queues for TX. alloc_netdev_mq() now allocates an array of netdev_queue structures for TX, based upon the queue_count argument. Furthermore, all accesses to the TX queues are now vectored through the netdev_get_tx_queue() and netdev_for_each_tx_queue() interfaces. This makes it easy to grep the tree for all things that want to get to a TX queue of a net device. Problem spots which are not really multiqueue aware yet, and only work with one queue, can easily be spotted by grepping for all netdev_get_tx_queue() calls that pass in a zero index. vlan: avoid header copying and linearisation where possible - vlan_dev_reorder_header() is only called on the receive path after calling skb_share_check(). This means we can use skb_cow() since all we need is a writable header. - vlan_dev_hard_header() includes a work-around for some apparently broken out of tree MPLS code. The hard_header functions can expect to always have a headroom of at least there own hard_header_len available, so the reallocation check is unnecessary. - __vlan_put_tag() can use skb_cow_head() to avoid the skb_unshare() copy when the header is writable. [VLAN]: set_rx_mode support for unicast address list Reuse the existing logic for multicast list synchronization for the unicast address list. The core of dev_mc_sync/unsync are split out as __dev_addr_sync/unsync and moved from dev_mcast.c to dev.c. These are then used to implement dev_unicast_sync/unsync as well. I'm working on cleaning up Intel's FCoE stack, which generates new MAC addresses from the fibre channel device id assigned by the fabric as per the current draft specification in T11. When using such a protocol in a VLAN environment it would be nice to not always be forced into promiscuous mode, assuming the underlying Ethernet driver supports multiple unicast addresses as well. When the address differs when setting it, the real device is put in promiscous mode twice, but never taken out again. Additionally it doesn't resync when the real device's address is changed and needlessly puts it in promiscous mode when the vlan device is still down. Fix by moving address handling to vlan_dev_open/vlan_dev_stop and properly deal with address changes in the device notifier. Also switch to dev_unicast_add (which needs the exact same handling). Since the set_mac_address handler is identical to the generic ethernet one with these changes, kill it and use ether_setup(). Signed-off-by: Patrick McHardy <kaber@trash.net> Signed-off-by: David S. It also avoids races between the ioctl interface and the (upcoming) netlink interface since now all changes happen under the RTNL. As a nice side effect this greatly simplifies error handling in the helper functions and fixes a number of incorrect error codes like -EINVAL for device not found. [VLAN]: Allow VLAN interface on top of bridge interface When a VLAN interface is created on top of a bridge interface and netfilter is enabled to see the bridged packets, the packets can be corrupted when passing through the netfilter code. This is caused by the VLAN driver not setting the 'protocol' and 'nh' members of the sk_buff structure. In general, this is no problem as the VLAN interface is mostly connected to a physical ethernet interface which does not use the 'protocol' and 'nh' members. For a bridge interface, however, these members do matter. Signed-off-by: Jerome Borsboom <j.borsboom@erasmusmc.nl> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

[NET]: Replace skb_pull/skb_postpull_rcsum with skb_pull_rcsum We're now starting to have quite a number of places that do skb_pull followed immediately by an skb_postpull_rcsum. We can merge these two operations into one function with skb_pull_rcsum. This makes sense since most pull operations on receive skb's need to update the checksum. I've decided to make this out-of-line since it is fairly big and the fast path where hardware checksums are enabled need to call csum_partial anyway. Since this is a brand new function we get to add an extra check on the len argument. As it is most callers of skb_pull ignore its return value which essentially means that there is no check on the len argument. Linux-2.6.12-rc2 Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
