block: use the holder as indication for exclusive opens The current interface for exclusive opens is rather confusing as it requires both the FMODE_EXCL flag and a holder. Remove the need to pass FMODE_EXCL and just key off the exclusive open off a non-NULL holder. For blkdev_put this requires adding the holder argument, which provides better debug checking that only the holder actually releases the hold, but at the same time allows removing the now superfluous mode argument. NULL/0 can be passed, both for the passthrough case on a raw request_queue and to temporarily avoid refactoring some nasty code. Also move the gfp_mask argument after the nr_vecs argument for a much more logical calling convention matching what most of the kernel does. treewide: remove editor modelines and cruft The section "19) Editor modelines and other cruft" in Documentation/process/coding-style.rst clearly says, "Do not include any of these in source files." I recently receive a patch to explicitly add a new one. Let's do treewide cleanups, otherwise some people follow the existing code and attempt to upstream their favoriate editor setups. It is even nicer if scripts/checkpatch.pl can check it. If we like to impose coding style in an editor-independent manner, I think editorconfig (patch [1]) is a saner solution. ocfs2: further debugfs cleanups There is no need to check return value of debugfs_create functions, but the last sweep through ocfs missed a number of places where this was happening. There is also no need to save the individual dentries for the debugfs files, as everything is can just be removed at once when the directory is removed. By getting rid of the file dentries for the debugfs entries, a bit of local memory can be saved as well. ocfs: no need to check return value of debugfs_create functions When calling debugfs functions, there is no need to ever check the return value. The function can work or not, but the code logic should never do something different based on this. Also, because there is no need to save the file dentry, remove all of the variables that were being saved, and just recursively delete the whole directory when shutting down, saving a lot of logic and local variables. ocfs2: revert "ocfs2/o2hb: check len for bio_add_page() to avoid getting incorrect bio" This reverts commit ba16ddfbeb9d ("ocfs2/o2hb: check len for bio_add_page() to avoid getting incorrect bio"). In my testing, this patch introduces a problem that mkfs can't have slots more than 16 with 4k block size. And the original logic is safe actually with the situation it mentions so revert this commit. block: replace bi_bdev with a gendisk pointer and partitions index This way we don't need a block_device structure to submit I/O. The block_device has different life time rules from the gendisk and request_queue and is usually only available when the block device node is open. Other callers need to explicitly create one (e.g. the lightnvm passthrough code, or the new nvme multipathing code). For the actual I/O path all that we need is the gendisk, which exists once per block device. But given that the block layer also does partition remapping we additionally need a partition index, which is used for said remapping in generic_make_request. Note that all the block drivers generally want request_queue or sometimes the gendisk, so this removes a layer of indirection all over the stack. ocfs2: o2hb: revert hb threshold to keep compatible Configfs is the interface for ocfs2-tools to set configure to kernel and $configfs_dir/cluster/$clustername/heartbeat/dead_threshold is the one used to configure heartbeat dead threshold. Kernel has a default value of it but user can set O2CB_HEARTBEAT_THRESHOLD in /etc/sysconfig/o2cb to override it. Commit 45b997737a80 ("ocfs2/cluster: use per-attribute show and store methods") changed heartbeat dead threshold name while ocfs2-tools did not, so ocfs2-tools won't set this configurable and the default value is always used. So revert it. ktime: Get rid of the union ktime is a union because the initial implementation stored the time in scalar nanoseconds on 64 bit machine and in a endianess optimized timespec variant for 32bit machines. The Y2038 cleanup removed the timespec variant and switched everything to scalar nanoseconds. The union remained, but become completely pointless. Get rid of the union and just keep ktime_t as simple typedef of type s64. The conversion was done with coccinelle and some manual mopping up. Like for iscsi device, stroage is made offline when session timeout, and this will make all io return -EIO. For this case, nodes shouldn't do negotiate timeout but should fence self. ocfs2: o2hb: add negotiate timer This series of patches is to fix the issue that when storage down, all nodes will fence self due to write timeout. With this patch set, all nodes will keep going until storage back online, except if the following issue happens, then all nodes will do as before to fence self. 1. io error got 2. network between nodes down 3. nodes panic This patch (of 6): When storage down, all nodes will fence self due to write timeout. The negotiate timer is designed to avoid this, with it node will wait until storage up again. Negotiate timer working in the following way: 1. The timer expires before write timeout timer, its timeout is half of write timeout now. It is re-queued along with write timeout timer. If expires, it will send NEGO_TIMEOUT message to master node(node with lowest node number). This message does nothing but marks a bit in a bitmap recording which nodes are negotiating timeout on master node. 2. If storage down, nodes will send this message to master node, then when master node finds its bitmap including all online nodes, it sends NEGO_APPROVL message to all nodes one by one, this message will re-queue write timeout timer and negotiate timer. For any node doesn't receive this message or meets some issue when handling this message, it will be fenced. If storage up at any time, o2hb_thread will run and re-queue all the timer, nothing will be affected by these two steps. mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macros PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. This promise never materialized. And unlikely will. We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case, especially on the border between fs and mm. Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much breakage to be doable. Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are not. I'll fix them manually in a separate patch. ocfs2/cluster: replace the interrupt safe spinlocks with common ones There actually no hardware or software interrupts in the context which using o2hb_live_lock, so we don't need to worry about race conditions caused by irq/softirq with spinlock held. Turning off irq is not good for system performance after all. Just replace them with a non interrupt safe function. ocfs2: fix race between mount and delete node/cluster There is a race case between mount and delete node/cluster, which will lead o2hb_thread to malfunctioning dead loop. o2hb_thread { o2nm_depend_this_node(); <<<<<< race window, node may have already been deleted, and then enter the loop, o2hb thread will be malfunctioning because of no configured nodes found. while (!kthread_should_stop() && !reg->hr_unclean_stop && !reg->hr_aborted_start) { } So check the return value of o2nm_depend_this_node() is needed. If node has been deleted, do not enter the loop and let mount fail. ocfs2: use 64bit variables to track heartbeat time o2hb_elapsed_msecs computes the time taken for a disk heartbeat. 'struct timeval' variables are used to store start and end times. On 32-bit systems, the 'tv_sec' component of 'struct timeval' will overflow in year 2038 and beyond. This patch solves the overflow with the following: 1. Replace o2hb_elapsed_msecs using 'ktime_t' values to measure start and end time, and built-in function 'ktime_ms_delta' to compute the elapsed time. ktime_get_real() is used since the code prints out the wallclock time. 2. Changes format string to print time as a single 64-bit nanoseconds value ("%lld") instead of seconds and microseconds. This simplifies the code since converting ktime_t to that format would need expensive computation. However, the debug log string is less readable than the previous format. block: add a bi_error field to struct bio Currently we have two different ways to signal an I/O error on a BIO: (1) by clearing the BIO_UPTODATE flag (2) by returning a Linux errno value to the bi_end_io callback The first one has the drawback of only communicating a single possible error (-EIO), and the second one has the drawback of not beeing persistent when bios are queued up, and are not passed along from child to parent bio in the ever more popular chaining scenario. Having both mechanisms available has the additional drawback of utterly confusing driver authors and introducing bugs where various I/O submitters only deal with one of them, and the others have to add boilerplate code to deal with both kinds of error returns. So add a new bi_error field to store an errno value directly in struct bio and remove the existing mechanisms to clean all this up. Revert "ocfs2: incorrect check for debugfs returns" This reverts commit e2ac55b6a8e337fac7cc59c6f452caac92ab5ee6. Huang Ying reports that this causes a hang at boot with debugfs disabled. It is true that the debugfs error checks are kind of confusing, and this code certainly merits more cleanup and thinking about it, but there's something wrong with the trivial "check not just for NULL, but for error pointers too" patch. Yes, with debugfs disabled, we will end up setting the o2hb_debug_dir pointer variable to an error pointer (-ENODEV), and then continue as if everything was fine. But since debugfs is disabled, all the _users_ of that pointer end up being compiled away, so even though the pointer can not be dereferenced, that's still fine. So it's confusing and somewhat questionable, but the "more correct" error checks end up causing more trouble than they fix. ocfs2: incorrect check for debugfs returns debugfs_create_dir and debugfs_create_file may return -ENODEV when debugfs is not configured, so the return value should be checked against ERROR_VALUE as well, otherwise the later dereference of the dentry pointer would crash the kernel. This patch tries to solve this problem by fixing certain checks. However, I have that found other call sites are protected by #ifdef CONFIG_DEBUG_FS. In current implementation, if CONFIG_DEBUG_FS is defined, then the above two functions will never return any ERROR_VALUE. So another possibility to fix this is to surround all the buggy checks/functions with the same #ifdef CONFIG_DEBUG_FS. But I'm not sure if this would break any functionality, as only OCFS2_FS_STATS declares dependency on DEBUG_FS. ocfs2: replace strnicmp with strncasecmp The kernel used to contain two functions for length-delimited, case-insensitive string comparison, strnicmp with correct semantics and a slightly buggy strncasecmp. The latter is the POSIX name, so strnicmp was renamed to strncasecmp, and strnicmp made into a wrapper for the new strncasecmp to avoid breaking existing users. To allow the compat wrapper strnicmp to be removed at some point in the future, and to avoid the extra indirection cost, do s/strnicmp/strncasecmp/g. ocfs2: fix deadlock between o2hb thread and o2net_wq The following case may lead to o2net_wq and o2hb thread deadlock on o2hb_callback_sem. Currently there are 2 nodes say N1, N2 in the cluster. And N2 down, at the same time, N3 tries to join the cluster. So N1 will handle node down (N2) and join (N3) simultaneously. o2hb o2net_wq ->o2hb_do_disk_heartbeat ->o2hb_check_slot ->o2hb_run_event_list ->o2hb_fire_callbacks ->down_write(&o2hb_callback_sem) ->o2net_hb_node_down_cb ->flush_workqueue(o2net_wq) ->o2net_process_message ->dlm_query_join_handler ->o2hb_check_node_heartbeating ->o2hb_fill_node_map ->down_read(&o2hb_callback_sem) No need to take o2hb_callback_sem in dlm_query_join_handler, o2hb_live_lock is enough to protect live node map. So the following tiny race case may happen in a multi-volumes mounted environment: o2hb-vol1 o2hb-vol2 1) o2hb_shutdown_slot allocate local event1 2) queue_node_event add event1 to global o2hb_node_events 3) o2hb_shutdown_slot allocate local event2 4) queue_node_event add event2 to global o2hb_node_events 5) o2hb_run_event_list delete event1 from o2hb_node_events 6) o2hb_run_event_list event1 empty, return 7) o2hb_shutdown_slot event1 lifecycle ends 8) o2hb_fire_callbacks event1 is already *invalid* This patch lets it wait on o2hb_callback_sem when another thread is firing callbacks. And for performance consideration, we only call o2hb_run_event_list when there is an event queued. Volume A Volume B already Mounted. Unmounting, call o2hb_heartbeat_group_drop_item() -> config_item_put(item) set reg(A)->item.ci_name to NULL in function config_item_cleanup(). begin mounting, call o2hb_region_pin() and tranverse all regions. When reading reg(A)->item.ci_name, it causes NULL pointer dereference. call o2hb_region_release() and del reg(A) from list. So we should skip accessing regions that is going to release when tranverse o2hb_all_regions. ocfs2/cluster: Abort heartbeat start on hard-ro devices Currently if the heartbeat device is hard-ro, the o2hb thread keeps chugging along and dumping errors along the way. The user needs to manually stop the heartbeat. The patch addresses this shortcoming by adding a limit to the number of times the hb thread will iterate in an unsteady state. ocfs2/cluster: Increase the live threshold for global heartbeat We have seen isolated cases (very few, I might add) of o2hb not detecting all live nodes on startup. One plausible reasoning for it is that other node had a hb io delay at the same time. The live threshold set at 2 (as low as it can be) could be increased to ameliorate the situation. But increasing the threshold directly affects mount time. Currently it takes around 5 secs to mount a volume in o2cb cluster with local heartbeat. Increasing the threshold will make mounts even slower. As the issue itself is rare, we have left things as they are for the local heartbeat mode. However we can improve the situation for global heartbeat mode as in that mode, we start the heartbeat much before the mount. This patch doubles the live threshold for the start of the first region in global heartbeat mode. Addresses internal Oracle bug#10635585. But because it is added in so many functions, if we enable it, the system logs get filled up quickly and cause too much I/O. So actually no one can open it for a production system or even for a test. This patch just try to remove it or change it. So: 1. if all the error paths already use mlog_errno, it is just removed. Otherwise, it will be replaced by mlog_errno. 2. if it is used to print some return value, it is replaced with mlog(0,...). mlog_exit_ptr is changed to mlog(0. Pinning disallows a region to be cleanly stopped as long as it has an active dependent user (read o2dlm). In local heartbeat mode, the region uuid matching the domain name is pinned as long as the o2dlm domain is active. In global heartbeat mode, all regions are pinned as long as there is atleast one dependent user and the region count is 3 or less. All regions are unpinned if the number of dependent users is zero or region count is greater than 3. block: make blkdev_get/put() handle exclusive access Over time, block layer has accumulated a set of APIs dealing with bdev open, close, claim and release. * blkdev_get/put() are the primary open and close functions. * bd_claim/release() deal with exclusive open. * open/close_bdev_exclusive() are combination of open and claim and the other way around, respectively. * bd_link/unlink_disk_holder() to create and remove holder/slave symlinks. * open_by_devnum() wraps bdget() + blkdev_get(). The interface is a bit confusing and the decoupling of open and claim makes it impossible to properly guarantee exclusive access as in-kernel open + claim sequence can disturb the existing exclusive open even before the block layer knows the current open if for another exclusive access. Reorganize the interface such that, * blkdev_get() is extended to include exclusive access management. @holder argument is added and, if is @FMODE_EXCL specified, it will gain exclusive access atomically w.r.t. other exclusive accesses. * blkdev_put() is similarly extended. It now takes @mode argument and if @FMODE_EXCL is set, it releases an exclusive access. Also, when the last exclusive claim is released, the holder/slave symlinks are removed automatically. * bd_claim/release() and close_bdev_exclusive() are no longer necessary and either made static or removed. * bd_link_disk_holder() remains the same but bd_unlink_disk_holder() is no longer necessary and removed. * open_bdev_exclusive() becomes a simple wrapper around lookup_bdev() and blkdev_get(). It also has an unexpected extra bdev_read_only() test which probably should be moved into blkdev_get(). * open_by_devnum() is modified to take @holder argument and pass it to blkdev_get(). Most of bdev open/close operations are unified into blkdev_get/put() and most exclusive accesses are tested atomically at the open time (as it should). This cleans up code and removes some, both valid and invalid, but unnecessary all the same, corner cases. open_bdev_exclusive() and open_by_devnum() can use further cleanup - rename to blkdev_get_by_path() and blkdev_get_by_devt() and drop special features. Well, let's leave them for another day. Most conversions are straight-forward. drbd conversion is a bit more involved as there was some reordering, but the logic should stay the same. include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. With SATA 4KB drives coming out that will no longer be the case. The sector size will be 4KB but the logical block size will remain 512-bytes. configfs: Allow ->make_item() and ->make_group() to return detailed errors. The configfs operations ->make_item() and ->make_group() currently return a new item/group. A return of NULL signifies an error. Because of this, -ENOMEM is the only return code bubbled up the stack. Multiple folks have requested the ability to return specific error codes when these operations fail. This patch adds that ability by changing the ->make_item/group() ops to return ERR_PTR() values. These errors are bubbled up appropriately. NULL returns are changed to -ENOMEM for compatibility. Also updated are the in-kernel users of configfs. Use helpers to obtain task pid in printks The task_struct->pid member is going to be deprecated, so start using the helpers (task_pid_nr/task_pid_vnr/task_pid_nr_ns) in the kernel. The first thing to start with is the pid, printed to dmesg - in this case we may safely use task_pid_nr(). Besides, printks produce more (much more) than a half of all the explicit pid usage. Drop 'size' argument from bio_endio and bi_end_io As bi_end_io is only called once when the reqeust is complete, the 'size' argument is now redundant. Remove it. ocfs2: Wake up a starting region if it gets killed in the background. Tell o2cb_region_dev_write() to wake up if rmdir(2) happens on the heartbeat region while it is starting up. Then o2hb_region_dev_write() can check to see if it is alive and act accordingly. This prevents a hang (not being woken) and a crash (if it's woken by a signal). ocfs2: Depend on configfs heartbeat items. ocfs2 mounts require a heartbeat region. Use the new configfs_depend_item() facility to actually depend on them so they can't go away from under us. First, teach cluster/nodemanager.c to depend an item on the o2cb subsystem. Then teach o2hb_register_callbacks to take a UUID and depend on the appropriate region. [PATCH] ocfs2 heartbeat: clean up bio submission code As was already pointed out Mathieu Avila on Thu, 07 Sep 2006 03:15:25 -0700 that OCFS2 is expecting bio_add_page() to add pages to BIOs in an easily predictable manner. That is not true, especially for devices with own merge_bvec_fn(). Therefore OCFS2's heartbeat code is very likely to fail on such devices. Move the bio_put() call into the bio's bi_end_io() function. This makes the whole idea of trying to predict the behaviour of bio_add_page() unnecessary.
