This is just the conversion to struct mnt_idmap. Currently we still pass around the plain namespace that was attached to a mount. This is in general pretty convenient but it makes it easy to conflate namespaces that are relevant on the filesystem with namespaces that are relevent on the mount level. Especially for non-vfs developers without detailed knowledge in this area this can be a potential source for bugs. Once the conversion to struct mnt_idmap is done all helpers down to the really low-level helpers will take a struct mnt_idmap argument instead of two namespace arguments. This way it becomes impossible to conflate the two eliminating the possibility of any bugs. All of the vfs and all filesystems only operate on struct mnt_idmap. fs: rename current get acl method The current way of setting and getting posix acls through the generic xattr interface is error prone and type unsafe. The vfs needs to interpret and fixup posix acls before storing or reporting it to userspace. Various hacks exist to make this work. The code is hard to understand and difficult to maintain in it's current form. Instead of making this work by hacking posix acls through xattr handlers we are building a dedicated posix acl api around the get and set inode operations. This removes a lot of hackiness and makes the codepaths easier to maintain. A lot of background can be found in [1]. The current inode operation for getting posix acls takes an inode argument but various filesystems (e.g., 9p, cifs, overlayfs) need access to the dentry. In contrast to the ->set_acl() inode operation we cannot simply extend ->get_acl() to take a dentry argument. The ->get_acl() inode operation is called from: acl_permission_check() -> check_acl() -> get_acl() which is part of generic_permission() which in turn is part of inode_permission(). Both generic_permission() and inode_permission() are called in the ->permission() handler of various filesystems (e.g., overlayfs). So simply passing a dentry argument to ->get_acl() would amount to also having to pass a dentry argument to ->permission(). We should avoid this unnecessary change. So instead of extending the existing inode operation rename it from ->get_acl() to ->get_inode_acl() and add a ->get_acl() method later that passes a dentry argument and which filesystems that need access to the dentry can implement instead of ->get_inode_acl(). Filesystems like cifs which allow setting and getting posix acls but not using them for permission checking during lookup can simply not implement ->get_inode_acl(). fs: make helpers idmap mount aware Extend some inode methods with an additional user namespace argument. A filesystem that is aware of idmapped mounts will receive the user namespace the mount has been marked with. This can be used for additional permission checking and also to enable filesystems to translate between uids and gids if they need to. We have implemented all relevant helpers in earlier patches. As requested we simply extend the exisiting inode method instead of introducing new ones. This is a little more code churn but it's mostly mechanical and doesnt't leave us with additional inode methods. jffs2: use 64-bit intermediate timestamps The VFS now uses timespec64 timestamps consistently, but jffs2 still converts them to 32-bit numbers on the storage medium. As the helper functions for the conversion (get_seconds() and timespec_to_timespec64()) are now deprecated, let's change them over to the more modern replacements. This keeps the traditional interpretation of those values, where the on-disk 32-bit numbers are taken to be negative numbers, i.e. dates before 1970, on 32-bit machines, but future numbers past 2038 on 64-bit machines. The change was made with the help of the following cocinelle script. This catches about 80% of the changes. All the header file and logic changes are included in the first 5 rules. do d_instantiate/unlock_new_inode combinations safely For anything NFS-exported we do _not_ want to unlock new inode before it has grown an alias; original set of fixes got the ordering right, but missed the nasty complication in case of lockdep being enabled - unlock_new_inode() does lockdep_annotate_inode_mutex_key(inode) which can only be done before anyone gets a chance to touch ->i_mutex. Unfortunately, flipping the order and doing unlock_new_inode() before d_instantiate() opens a window when mkdir can race with open-by-fhandle on a guessed fhandle, leading to multiple aliases for a directory inode and all the breakage that follows from that. Correct solution: a new primitive (d_instantiate_new()) combining these two in the right order - lockdep annotate, then d_instantiate(), then the rest of unlock_new_inode(). All combinations of d_instantiate() with unlock_new_inode() should be converted to that. With sb->s_xattr == NULL, the generic_{get,set,remove}xattr functions produce the same result as setting the {get,set,remove}xattr inode operations to NULL, so there is no need for these macros. vfs: make the string hashes salt the hash We always mixed in the parent pointer into the dentry name hash, but we did it late at lookup time. It turns out that we can simplify that lookup-time action by salting the hash with the parent pointer early instead of late. A few other users of our string hashes also wanted to mix in their own pointers into the hash, and those are updated to use the same mechanism. Hash users that don't have any particular initial salt can just use the NULL pointer as a no-salt. VFS: (Scripted) Convert S_ISLNK/DIR/REG(dentry->d_inode) to d_is_*(dentry) Convert the following where appropriate: (1) S_ISLNK(dentry->d_inode) to d_is_symlink(dentry). (2) S_ISREG(dentry->d_inode) to d_is_reg(dentry). (3) S_ISDIR(dentry->d_inode) to d_is_dir(dentry). This is actually more complicated than it appears as some calls should be converted to d_can_lookup() instead. The difference is whether the directory in question is a real dir with a ->lookup op or whether it's a fake dir with a ->d_automount op. In some circumstances, we can subsume checks for dentry->d_inode not being NULL into this, provided we the code isn't in a filesystem that expects d_inode to be NULL if the dirent really *is* negative (ie. if we're going to use d_inode() rather than d_backing_inode() to get the inode pointer). Note that the dentry type field may be set to something other than DCACHE_MISS_TYPE when d_inode is NULL in the case of unionmount, where the VFS manages the fall-through from a negative dentry to a lower layer. In such a case, the dentry type of the negative union dentry is set to the same as the type of the lower dentry. However, if you know d_inode is not NULL at the call site, then you can use the d_is_xxx() functions even in a filesystem. There is one further complication: a 0,0 chardev dentry may be labelled DCACHE_WHITEOUT_TYPE rather than DCACHE_SPECIAL_TYPE. Strictly, this was intended for special directory entry types that don't have attached inodes. fs/vfs/security: pass last path component to LSM on inode creation SELinux would like to implement a new labeling behavior of newly created inodes. We currently label new inodes based on the parent and the creating process. This new behavior would also take into account the name of the new object when deciding the new label. This is not the (supposed) full path, just the last component of the path. This is very useful because creating /etc/shadow is different than creating /etc/passwd but the kernel hooks are unable to differentiate these operations. We currently require that userspace realize it is doing some difficult operation like that and than userspace jumps through SELinux hoops to get things set up correctly. This patch does not implement new behavior, that is obviously contained in a seperate SELinux patch, but it does pass the needed name down to the correct LSM hook. [JFFS2] Tidy up fix for ACL/permissions problem. [In commit 9ed437c50d89eabae763dd422579f73fdebf288d we fixed a problem with standard permissions on newly-created inodes, when POSIX ACLs are enabled. This cleans it up...] The attached patch separate jffs2_init_acl() into two parts. The one is jffs2_init_acl_pre() called from jffs2_new_inode(). It compute ACL oriented inode->i_mode bits, and allocate in-memory ACL objects associated with the new inode just before when inode meta infomation is written to the medium. The other is jffs2_init_acl_post() called from jffs2_symlink(), jffs2_mkdir(), jffs2_mknod() and jffs2_do_create(). It actually writes in-memory ACL objects into the medium next to the success of writing meta-information. In the current implementation, we have to write a same inode meta infomation twice when inode->i_mode is updated by the default ACL. However, we can avoid the behavior by putting an updated i_mode before it is written at first, as jffs2_init_acl_pre() doing. [JFFS2] Tidy up licensing/copyright boilerplate. In particular, remove the bit in the LICENCE file about contacting Red Hat for alternative arrangements. Their errant IS department broke that arrangement a long time ago -- the policy of collecting copyright assignments from contributors came to an end when the plug was pulled on the servers hosting the project, without notice or reason. We do still dual-license it for use with eCos, with the GPL+exception licence approved by the FSF as being GPL-compatible. It's just that nobody has the right to license it differently. Presumably these includes were once needed for macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the course of cleaning it up. To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble. Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha, arm, i386, ia64, mips, powerpc, and x86_64 with allnoconfig, defconfig, allmodconfig, and allyesconfig as well as a few randconfigs on x86_64 and all configs in arch/arm/configs on arm. I also checked that no new warnings were introduced by the patch (actually, some warnings are removed that were emitted by unnecessarily included header files). Marking them const moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential dirty data. In addition it'll catch accidental writes at compile time to these shared resources. [PATCH] r/o bind mounts: unlink: monitor i_nlink When a filesystem decrements i_nlink to zero, it means that a write must be performed in order to drop the inode from the filesystem. We're shortly going to have keep filesystems from being remounted r/o between the time that this i_nlink decrement and that write occurs. So, add a little helper function to do the decrements. We'll tie into it in a bit to note when i_nlink hits zero. [JFFS2] Support new device nodes Device node major/minor numbers are just stored in the payload of a single data node. Just extend that to 4 bytes and use new_encode_dev() for it. We only use the 4-byte format if we _need_ to, if !old_valid_dev(foo). This preserves backwards compatibility with older code as much as possible. If we do make devices with major or minor numbers above 255, and then mount the file system with the old code, it'll just read the first two bytes and get the numbers wrong. [JFFS2][XATTR] XATTR support on JFFS2 (version. 5) This attached patches provide xattr support including POSIX-ACL and SELinux support on JFFS2 (version.5). There are some significant differences from previous version posted at last December. The biggest change is addition of EBS(Erase Block Summary) support. Currently, both kernel and usermode utility (sumtool) can recognize xattr nodes which have JFFS2_NODETYPE_XATTR/_XREF nodetype. In addition, some bugs are fixed. - A potential race condition was fixed. - Unexpected fail when updating a xattr by same name/value pair was fixed. - A bug when removing xattr name/value pair was fixed. The fundamental structures (such as using two new nodetypes and exclusion mechanism by rwsem) are unchanged. But most of implementation were reviewed and updated if necessary. Espacially, we had to change several internal implementations related to load_xattr_datum() to avoid a potential race condition. [JFFS2] Add erase block summary support (mount time improvement) The goal of summary is to speed up the mount time. Erase block summary (EBS) stores summary information at the end of every (closed) erase block. It is no longer necessary to scan all nodes separetly (and read all pages of them) just read this "small" summary, where every information is stored which is needed at mount time. This summary information is stored in a JFFS2_FEATURE_RWCOMPAT_DELETE. During the mount process if there is no summary info the orignal scan process will be executed. EBS works with NAND and NOR flashes, too. There is a user space tool called sumtool to generate this summary information for a JFFS2 image. [JFFS2] Use f->target instead of f->dents for symlink target JFFS2 uses f->dents to store the pointer to the symlink target string (in case the inode is symlink). This is somewhat ugly to use the same field for different reasons. Introduce distinct field f->target for this purpose. Note, f->fragtree, f->dents, f->target may probably be put in a union. Linux-2.6.12-rc2 Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
