virtio: store owner from modules with register_virtio_driver() Modules registering driver with register_virtio_driver() might forget to set .owner field. i2c-virtio.c for example has it missing. The field is used by some other kernel parts for reference counting (try_module_get()), so it is expected that drivers will set it. Solve the problem by moving this task away from the drivers to the core virtio code, just like we did for platform_driver in commit 9447057eaff8 ("platform_device: use a macro instead of platform_driver_register"). virtio: reenable config if freezing device failed Currently, we don't reenable the config if freezing the device failed. For example, virtio-mem currently doesn't support suspend+resume, and trying to freeze the device will always fail. Afterwards, the device will no longer respond to resize requests, because it won't get notified about config changes. Let's fix this by re-enabling the config if freezing fails. virtio: replace restricted mem access flag with callback Instead of having a global flag to require restricted memory access for all virtio devices, introduce a callback which can select that requirement on a per-device basis. For convenience add a common function returning always true, which can be used for use cases like SEV. Per default use a callback always returning false. virtio: disable notification hardening by default We try to harden virtio device notifications in 8b4ec69d7e09 ("virtio: harden vring IRQ"). It works with the assumption that the driver or core can properly call virtio_device_ready() at the right place. Unfortunately, this seems to be not true and uncover various bugs of the existing drivers, mainly the issue of using virtio_device_ready() incorrectly. So let's add a Kconfig option and disable it by default. It gives us time to fix the drivers and then we can consider re-enabling it. virtio: harden vring IRQ This is a rework on the previous IRQ hardening that is done for virtio-pci where several drawbacks were found and were reverted: 1) try to use IRQF_NO_AUTOEN which is not friendly to affinity managed IRQ that is used by some device such as virtio-blk 2) done only for PCI transport The vq->broken is re-used in this patch for implementing the IRQ hardening. The vq->broken is set to true during both initialization and reset. And the vq->broken is set to false in virtio_device_ready(). Then vring_interrupt() can check and return when vq->broken is true. And in this case, switch to return IRQ_NONE to let the interrupt core aware of such invalid interrupt to prevent IRQ storm. The reason of using a per queue variable instead of a per device one is that we may need it for per queue reset hardening in the future. Note that the hardening is only done for vring interrupt since the config interrupt hardening is already done in commit 22b7050a024d7 ("virtio: defer config changed notifications"). But the method that is used by config interrupt can't be reused by the vring interrupt handler because it uses spinlock to do the synchronization which is expensive. virtio: acknowledge all features before access The feature negotiation was designed in a way that makes it possible for devices to know which config fields will be accessed by drivers. This is broken since commit 404123c2db79 ("virtio: allow drivers to validate features") with fallout in at least block and net. We have a partial work-around in commit 2f9a174f918e ("virtio: write back F_VERSION_1 before validate") which at least lets devices find out which format should config space have, but this is a partial fix: guests should not access config space without acknowledging features since otherwise we'll never be able to change the config space format. To fix, split finalize_features from virtio_finalize_features and call finalize_features with all feature bits before validation, and then - if validation changed any bits - once again after. Since virtio_finalize_features no longer writes out features rename it to virtio_features_ok - since that is what it does: checks that features are ok with the device. As a side effect, this also reduces the amount of hypervisor accesses - we now only acknowledge features once unless we are clearing any features when validating (which is uncommon). IRC I think that this was more or less always the intent in the spec but unfortunately the way the spec is worded does not say this explicitly, I plan to address this at the spec level, too. virtio: write back F_VERSION_1 before validate The virtio specification virtio-v1.1-cs01 states: "Transitional devices MUST detect Legacy drivers by detecting that VIRTIO_F_VERSION_1 has not been acknowledged by the driver." This is exactly what QEMU as of 6.1 has done relying solely on VIRTIO_F_VERSION_1 for detecting that. However, the specification also says: "... the driver MAY read (but MUST NOT write) the device-specific configuration fields to check that it can support the device ..." before setting FEATURES_OK. In that case, any transitional device relying solely on VIRTIO_F_VERSION_1 for detecting legacy drivers will return data in legacy format. In particular, this implies that it is in big endian format for big endian guests. This naturally confuses the driver which expects little endian in the modern mode. It is probably a good idea to amend the spec to clarify that VIRTIO_F_VERSION_1 can only be relied on after the feature negotiation is complete. Before validate callback existed, config space was only read after FEATURES_OK. However, we already have two regressions, so let's address this here as well. The regressions affect the VIRTIO_NET_F_MTU feature of virtio-net and the VIRTIO_BLK_F_BLK_SIZE feature of virtio-blk for BE guests when virtio 1.0 is used on both sides. The latter renders virtio-blk unusable with DASD backing, because things simply don't work with the default. See Fixes tags for relevant commits. For QEMU, we can work around the issue by writing out the feature bits with VIRTIO_F_VERSION_1 bit set. We (ab)use the finalize_features config op for this. This isn't enough to address all vhost devices since these do not get the features until FEATURES_OK, however it looks like the affected devices actually never handled the endianness for legacy mode correctly, so at least that's not a regression. No devices except virtio net and virtio blk seem to be affected. Long term the right thing to do is to fix the hypervisors. bus: Make remove callback return void The driver core ignores the return value of this callback because there is only little it can do when a device disappears. This is the final bit of a long lasting cleanup quest where several buses were converted to also return void from their remove callback. Additionally some resource leaks were fixed that were caused by drivers returning an error code in the expectation that the driver won't go away. With struct bus_type::remove returning void it's prevented that newly implemented buses return an ignored error code and so don't anticipate wrong expectations for driver authors. virtio: hint if callbacks surprisingly might sleep A virtio transport is free to implement some of the callbacks in virtio_config_ops in a matter that they cannot be called from atomic context (e.g. virtio-ccw, which maps a lot of the callbacks to channel I/O, which is an inherently asynchronous mechanism). This can be very surprising for developers using the much more common virtio-pci transport, just to find out that things break when used on s390. The documentation for virtio_config_ops now contains a comment explaining this, but it makes sense to add a might_sleep() annotation to various wrapper functions in the virtio core to avoid surprises later. In order to do this we need to essentially run the freeze()/restore() code path. virtio: fix memory leak of virtio ida cache layers The virtio core uses a static ida named virtio_index_ida for assigning index numbers to virtio devices during registration. The ida core may allocate some internal idr cache layers and an ida bitmap upon any ida allocation, and all these layers are truely freed only upon the ida destruction. The virtio_index_ida is not destroyed at present, leading to a memory leak when using the virtio core as a module and atleast one virtio device is registered and unregistered. [SCSI] virtio-scsi: Add vdrv->scan for post VIRTIO_CONFIG_S_DRIVER_OK LUN scanning This patch changes virtio-scsi to use a new virtio_driver->scan() callback so that scsi_scan_host() can be properly invoked once virtio_dev_probe() has set add_status(dev, VIRTIO_CONFIG_S_DRIVER_OK) to signal active virtio-ring operation, instead of from within virtscsi_probe(). This fixes a bug where SCSI LUN scanning for both virtio-scsi-raw and virtio-scsi/tcm_vhost setups was happening before VIRTIO_CONFIG_S_DRIVER_OK had been set, causing VIRTIO_SCSI_S_BAD_TARGET to occur. This fixes a bug with virtio-scsi/tcm_vhost where LUN scan was not detecting LUNs. Tested with virtio-scsi-raw + virtio-scsi/tcm_vhost w/ IBLOCK on 3.5-rc2 code. virtio: fix id_matching for virtio drivers This bug never appeared, since all current virtio drivers use VIRTIO_DEV_ANY_ID for the vendor field. If a real vendor would be used, the check in virtio_id_match is wrong - it returns 0 if id->vendor == dev->id.vendor. virtio: meet virtio spec by finalizing features before using device Virtio devices are supposed to negotiate features before they start using the device, but the current code doesn't do this. This is because the driver's probe() function invariably has to add buffers to a virtqueue, or probe the disk (virtio_blk). This currently doesn't matter since no existing backend is strict about the feature negotiation. But it's possible to imagine a future feature which completely changes how a device operates: in this case, we'd need to acknowledge it before using the device. virtio: struct device - replace bus_id with dev_name(), dev_set_name() This patch is part of a larger patch series which will remove the "char bus_id[20]" name string from struct device. The device name is managed in the kobject anyway, and without any size limitation, and just needlessly copied into "struct device". To set and read the device name dev_name(dev) and dev_set_name(dev) must be used. If your code uses static kobjects, which it shouldn't do, "const char *init_name" can be used to statically provide the name the registered device should have. At registration time, the init_name field is cleared, to enforce the use of dev_name(dev) to access the device name at a later time. We need to get rid of all occurrences of bus_id in the entire tree to be able to enable the new interface. Please apply this patch, and possibly convert any remaining remaining occurrences of bus_id. We want to submit a patch to -next, which will remove bus_id from "struct device", to find the remaining pieces to convert, and finally switch over to the new api, which will remove the 20 bytes array and does no longer have a size limitation. virtio: set device index in common code. Anthony Liguori points out that three different transports use the virtio code, but each one keeps its own counter to set the virtio_device's index field. In theory (though not in current practice) this means that names could be duplicated, and that risk grows as more transports are created. So we move the selection of the unique virtio_device.index into the common code in virtio.c, which has the side-benefit of removing duplicate code. The only complexity is that lguest and S/390 use the index to uniquely identify the device in case of catastrophic failure before register_virtio_device() is called: now we use the offset within the descriptor page as a unique identifier for the printks. virtio: explicit advertisement of driver features A recent proposed feature addition to the virtio block driver revealed some flaws in the API: in particular, we assume that feature negotiation is complete once a driver's probe function returns. There is nothing in the API to require this, however, and even I didn't notice when it was violated. So instead, we require the driver to specify what features it supports in a table, we can then move the feature negotiation into the virtio core. The intersection of device and driver features are presented in a new 'features' bitmap in the struct virtio_device. Note that this highlights the difference between Linux unsigned-long bitmaps where each unsigned long is in native endian, and a straight-forward little-endian array of bytes. Drivers can still remove feature bits in their probe routine if they really have to. virtio: reset function A reset function solves three problems: 1) It allows us to renegotiate features, eg. if we want to upgrade a guest driver without rebooting the guest. 2) It gives us a clean way of shutting down virtqueues: after a reset, we know that the buffers won't be used by the host, and 3) It helps the guest recover from messed-up drivers. So we remove the ->shutdown hook, and the only way we now remove feature bits is via reset. We leave it to the driver to do the reset before it deletes queues: the balloon driver, for example, needs to chat to the host in its remove function. virtio: simplify config mechanism. Previously we used a type/len pair within the config space, but this seems overkill. We now simply define a structure which represents the layout in the config space: the config space can now only be extended at the end. The main driver-visible changes: 1) We indicate what fields are present with an explicit feature bit. 2) Virtqueues are explicitly numbered, and not in the config space. Virtio interface This attempts to implement a "virtual I/O" layer which should allow common drivers to be efficiently used across most virtual I/O mechanisms. It will no-doubt need further enhancement. The virtio drivers add buffers to virtio queues; as the buffers are consumed the driver "interrupt" callbacks are invoked. There is also a generic implementation of config space which drivers can query to get setup information from the host.
