fbdev/intelfb: Remove driver From looking at the PCI IDs, every device supported by intelfb is also supported by i915. Anyone still using intelfb should please move on to i915, which does everything intelfb does but better. Removing intelfb is motivated by the driver's excessive use of the global screen_info state. The state belongs to architecture and firmware code; device drivers should not attempt to access it. But fixing intelfb would require a significant change in the driver's probing logic. As intelfb has been obsolete for nearly 2 decades, it is probably not worth the effort. Let's just remove it. Also remove the related documentation. fbdev: amba-clcd: Delete the old CLCD driver We have managed to ascertain that all users of the old FBDEV code that are out of tree are now gone. The new DRM driver can be found in drivers/gpu/drm/pl111/. The remaining out of tree user was the ARM FVP emulation platform, running Android. Thanks to changes in Android versions 13 and 14, Android can now use the DRM driver when being emulated under FVP. Some final patches are being put in place to make it fully featured. This is essentially a revert of the partial revert in commit 112c35237c72 ("Partially revert "video: fbdev: amba-clcd: Retire elder CLCD driver"") Signed-off-by: Linus Walleij <linus.walleij@linaro.org> Signed-off-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de>

vga16fb: drop powerpc support I noticed that commit 0db5b61e0dc07 ("fbdev/vga16fb: Create EGA/VGA devices in sysfb code") broke vga16fb on non-x86 platforms, because the sysfb code never creates a vga-framebuffer device when screen_info.orig_video_isVGA is set to '1' instead of VIDEO_TYPE_VGAC. However, it turns out that the only architecture that has allowed building vga16fb in the past 20 years is powerpc, and this only worked on two 32-bit platforms and never on 64-bit powerpc. The last machine that actually used this was removed in linux-3.10, so this is all dead code and can be removed. The big-endian support in vga16fb.c could also be removed, but I'd just leave this in place. Setting all callbacks in all drivers explicitly will allow to make the I/O helpers optional. This benefits systems that do not use these functions. No functional changes. arch: Remove Itanium (IA-64) architecture The Itanium architecture is obsolete, and an informal survey [0] reveals that any residual use of Itanium hardware in production is mostly HP-UX or OpenVMS based. The use of Linux on Itanium appears to be limited to enthusiasts that occasionally boot a fresh Linux kernel to see whether things are still working as intended, and perhaps to churn out some distro packages that are rarely used in practice. None of the original companies behind Itanium still produce or support any hardware or software for the architecture, and it is listed as 'Orphaned' in the MAINTAINERS file, as apparently, none of the engineers that contributed on behalf of those companies (nor anyone else, for that matter) have been willing to support or maintain the architecture upstream or even be responsible for applying the odd fix. The Intel firmware team removed all IA-64 support from the Tianocore/EDK2 reference implementation of EFI in 2018. (Itanium is the original architecture for which EFI was developed, and the way Linux supports it deviates significantly from other architectures.) Some distros, such as Debian and Gentoo, still maintain [unofficial] ia64 ports, but many have dropped support years ago. While the argument is being made [1] that there is a 'for the common good' angle to being able to build and run existing projects such as the Grid Community Toolkit [2] on Itanium for interoperability testing, the fact remains that none of those projects are known to be deployed on Linux/ia64, and very few people actually have access to such a system in the first place. Even if there were ways imaginable in which Linux/ia64 could be put to good use today, what matters is whether anyone is actually doing that, and this does not appear to be the case. There are no emulators widely available, and so boot testing Itanium is generally infeasible for ordinary contributors. GCC still supports IA-64 but its compile farm [3] no longer has any IA-64 machines. GLIBC would like to get rid of IA-64 [4] too because it would permit some overdue code cleanups. In summary, the benefits to the ecosystem of having IA-64 be part of it are mostly theoretical, whereas the maintenance overhead of keeping it supported is real. So let's rip off the band aid, and remove the IA-64 arch code entirely. This follows the timeline proposed by the Debian/ia64 maintainer [5], which removes support in a controlled manner, leaving IA-64 in a known good state in the most recent LTS release. Other projects will follow once the kernel support is removed. fbdev/hyperv_fb: Use fb_ops helpers for deferred I/O Generate callback functions for struct fb_ops with the fbdev macro FB_GEN_DEFAULT_DEFERRED_IOMEM_OPS(). Initialize struct fb_ops to the generated functions with fbdev initializer macros. The hyperv_fb driver is incomplete in its handling of deferred I/O and damage framebuffers. Write operations do no trigger damage handling. Fixing this is beyond the scope of this patch. Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Cc: "K. Y. fbdev: Split frame buffer support in FB and FB_CORE symbols Currently the CONFIG_FB option has to be enabled even if no legacy fbdev drivers are needed (e.g: only to have support for framebuffer consoles). The DRM subsystem has a fbdev emulation layer, but depends on CONFIG_FB and so it can only be enabled if that dependency is enabled as well. That means fbdev drivers have to be explicitly disabled if users want to enable CONFIG_FB, only to use fbcon and/or the DRM fbdev emulation layer. This patch introduces a non-visible CONFIG_FB_CORE symbol that could be enabled just to have core support needed for CONFIG_DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION, allowing CONFIG_FB to be disabled (and automatically disabling all the fbdev drivers). Nothing from fb_backlight.o and fbmon.o is used by the DRM fbdev emulation layer so these two objects can be compiled out when CONFIG_FB is disabled. fbdev: Make support for userspace interfaces configurable Add Kconfig option CONFIG_FB_DEVICE and make the virtual fbdev device optional. If the new option has not been selected, fbdev does not create files in devfs, sysfs or procfs. Most modern Linux systems run a DRM-based graphics stack that uses the kernel's framebuffer console, but has otherwise deprecated fbdev support. Yet fbdev userspace interfaces are still present. The option makes it possible to use the fbdev subsystem as console implementation without support for userspace. This closes potential entry points to manipulate kernel or I/O memory via framebuffers. It also prevents the execution of driver code via ioctl or sysfs, both of which might allow malicious software to exploit bugs in the fbdev code. A small number of fbdev drivers require struct fbinfo.dev to be initialized, usually for the support of sysfs interface. Make these drivers depend on FB_DEVICE. They can later be fixed if necessary. v3: * effect -> affect in Kconfig help (Daniel) v2: * set FB_DEVICE default to y (Geert) * comment on {get,put}_device() (Sam) * Kconfig fixes (Sam) * add TODO item about FB_DEVICE dependencies (Sam) Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Acked-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org> Reviewed-by: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20230613110953.24176-39-tzimmermann@suse.de

fbdev: Add support for the nomodeset kernel parameter Support the kernel's nomodeset parameter for all PCI-based fbdev drivers that use aperture helpers to remove other, hardware-agnostic graphics drivers. The parameter is a simple way of using the firmware-provided scanout buffer if the hardware's native driver is broken. The same effect could be achieved with per-driver options, but the importance of the graphics output for many users makes a single, unified approach worthwhile. With nomodeset specified, the fbdev driver module will not load. This unifies behavior with similar DRM drivers. In DRM helpers, modules first check the nomodeset parameter before registering the PCI driver. As fbdev has no such module helpers, we have to modify each driver individually. The name 'nomodeset' is slightly misleading, but has been chosen for historical reasons. Several drivers implemented it before it became a general option for DRM. So keeping the existing name was preferred over introducing a new one. v2: * print a warning if a driver does not init (Helge) * wrap video_firmware_drivers_only() in helper Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Reviewed-by: Javier Martinez Canillas <javierm@redhat.com> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20221111133024.9897-3-tzimmermann@suse.de

drm/ofdrm: Add ofdrm for Open Firmware framebuffers Open Firmware provides basic display output via the 'display' node. DT platform code already provides a device that represents the node's framebuffer. Add a DRM driver for the device. The display mode and color format is pre-initialized by the system's firmware. Runtime modesetting via DRM is not possible. The display is useful during early boot stages or as error fallback. Similar functionality is already provided by fbdev's offb driver, which is insufficient for modern userspace. The old driver includes support for BootX device tree, which can be found on old 32-bit PowerPC Macintosh systems. If these are still in use, the functionality can be added to ofdrm or implemented in a new driver. As with simpledrm, the fbdev driver cannot be selected if ofdrm is already enabled. Two notable points about the driver: * Reading the framebuffer aperture from the device tree is not reliable on all systems. Ofdrm takes the heuristics and a comment from offb to pick the correct range. * No resource management may be tied to the underlying PCI device. Otherwise the handover to the native driver will fail with a resource conflict. PCI management is therefore done as part of the platform device's cleanup. The driver has been tested on qemu's ppc64le emulation. The device hand-over has been tested with bochs. v5: * use drm_atomic_helper_check_crtc_primary_plane() v4: * set preferred depth to the correct value * set bpp value for console emulation * output scanout-buffer parameters with drm_dbg() v3: * reintegrate FWFB helpers into ofdrm * use damage iterator * sync GEM BOs with drm_gem_fb_{begin,end}_cpu_access() * fix various atomic_check helpers * remove CRTC atomic_{enable,disable} (Javier) * compute stride with drm_format_info_min_pitch() (Daniel) v2: * removed simple-pipe helpers * built driver on top of FWFB helpers * merged all init code into single function * make PCI support optional (Michal) * support COMPILE_TEST (Javier) Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Reviewed-by: Javier Martinez Canillas <javierm@redhat.com> convert Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20221011150712.3928-2-tzimmermann@suse.de

fbdev: simplefb: fix Kconfig dependencies Configurations with both CONFIG_FB_SIMPLE=y and CONFIG_DRM_SIMPLEDRM=m are allowed by Kconfig because the 'depends on !DRM_SIMPLEDRM' dependency does not disallow FB_SIMPLE as long as SIMPLEDRM is not built-in. This can however result in a build failure when cfb_fillrect() etc are then also in loadable modules: x86_64-linux-ld: drivers/video/fbdev/simplefb.o:(.rodata+0x1f8): undefined reference to `cfb_fillrect' x86_64-linux-ld: drivers/video/fbdev/simplefb.o:(.rodata+0x200): undefined reference to `cfb_copyarea' x86_64-linux-ld: drivers/video/fbdev/simplefb.o:(.rodata+0x208): undefined reference to `cfb_imageblit' To work around this, change FB_SIMPLE to be a 'tristate' symbol, which still allows both to be =m together, but not one of them to be =y if the other one is =m. If a distro kernel picks this configuration, it can be determined by local policy which of the two modules gets loaded. The 'of_chosen' export is needed as this is the first loadable module referencing it. Alternatively, the Kconfig dependency could be changed to 'depends on DRM_SIMPLEDRM=n', which would forbid the configuration with both drivers. tgafb: clarify dependencies The TGA boards were based on the DECchip 21030 PCI graphics accelerator used mainly for alpha, and existed in a TURBOchannel (TC) version for the DECstation (MIPS) workstations. However, the config option for the TGA code is a bit confused, and says depends on FB && (ALPHA || TC) because people didn't really want to enable the option for random PCI environments, so the "ALPHA" stands in for that case (while the TC case is then the MIPS DECstation case). So that config dependency is kind of a mixture of architecture and bus choices. But it's incorrect, in that there were non-PCI-based alpha hardware, and then the driver just causes warnings: drivers/video/fbdev/tgafb.c:1532:13: error: ‘tgafb_unregister’ defined but not used [-Werror=unused-function] 1532 | static void tgafb_unregister(struct device *dev) | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ drivers/video/fbdev/tgafb.c:1387:12: error: ‘tgafb_register’ defined but not used [-Werror=unused-function] 1387 | static int tgafb_register(struct device *dev) | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~ so let's make the config option dependencies a bit more explict: depends on FB depends on PCI || TC depends on ALPHA || TC where that first "FB" is the software configuration dependency, the second "PCI || TC" is the hardware bus dependency, while that final "ALPHA || TC" dependency is the "don't bother asking except for these situations. We could make that third case have "COMPILE_TEST" as an option, and mark the register/unregister functions as __maybe_unused, but I'm not sure it's really worth it. drm: Add simpledrm driver The simpledrm driver is a DRM driver for simple-framebuffer framebuffers as provided by the kernel's boot code. This driver enables basic graphical output on many different graphics devices that are provided by the platform (e.g., EFI, VESA, embedded framebuffers). With the kernel's simple-framebuffer infrastructure, the kernel receives a pre-configured framebuffer from the system (i.e., firmware, boot loader). It creates a platform device to which simpledrm attaches. The system's framebuffer consists of a memory range, size and format. Based on these values, simpledrm creates a DRM devices. No actual modesetting is possible. A firmware framebuffer might also be specified via device-tree files. If no device platform data is given, try the DT device node. Make sure required hardware clocks and regulators are enabled while the firmware framebuffer is in use. The basic code has been taken from the simplefb driver and adapted to DRM. Clocks are released automatically via devres helpers. The drivers displays a console on simpledrm's framebuffer. The default framebuffer format is being used. v4: * disable simplefb if simpledrm has been selected (Maxime) v3: * add disable function that clears screen to black (Daniel) * set shadow buffering only for fbdev emulation * set platform-driver data during device creation v2: * rename driver to simpledrm * add dri-devel to MAINTAINERS entry * put native format first in primary-plane format list (Daniel) * inline simplekms_device_cleanup() (Daniel) * use helpers for shadow-buffered planes * fix whitespace errors * add Device Tree match table * clean-up parser wrappers * use strscpy() Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Reviewed-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch> # fbdev support Acked-by: Maxime Ripard <maxime@cerno.tech> Tested-by: nerdopolis <bluescreen_avenger@verizon.net> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20210430105840.30515-5-tzimmermann@suse.de Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20210430105840.30515-6-tzimmermann@suse.de Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20210430105840.30515-7-tzimmermann@suse.de Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20210430105840.30515-8-tzimmermann@suse.de Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20210430105840.30515-9-tzimmermann@suse.de

Partially revert "video: fbdev: amba-clcd: Retire elder CLCD driver" Also partially revert the follow-up change "drm: pl111: Absorb the external register header". This reverts the parts of commits 7e4e589db76a3cf4c1f534eb5a09cc6422766b93 and 0fb8125635e8eb5483fb095f98dcf0651206a7b8 that touch paths outside of drivers/gpu/drm/pl111. The fbdev driver is used by Android's FVP configuration. Using the DRM driver together with DRM's fbdev emulation results in a failure to boot Android. The root cause is that Android's generic fbdev userspace driver relies on the ability to set the pixel format via FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO, which is not supported by fbdev emulation. There have been other less critical behavioral differences identified between the fbdev driver and the DRM driver with fbdev emulation. The DRM driver exposes different values for the panel's width, height and refresh rate, and the DRM driver fails a FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO syscall with yres_virtual greater than the maximum supported value instead of letting the syscall succeed and setting yres_virtual based on yres. video: hyperv: hyperv_fb: Use physical memory for fb on HyperV Gen 1 VMs. On Hyper-V, Generation 1 VMs can directly use VM's physical memory for their framebuffers. This can improve the efficiency of framebuffer and overall performence for VM. The physical memory assigned to framebuffer must be contiguous. We use CMA allocator to get contiguouse physicial memory when the framebuffer size is greater than 4MB. For size under 4MB, we use alloc_pages to achieve this. To enable framebuffer memory allocation from CMA, supply a kernel parameter to give enough space to CMA allocator at boot time. For example: cma=130m This gives 130MB memory to CAM allocator that can be allocated to framebuffer. If this fails, we fall back to the old way of using mmio for framebuffer. video: hyperv: hyperv_fb: Support deferred IO for Hyper-V frame buffer driver Without deferred IO support, hyperv_fb driver informs the host to refresh the entire guest frame buffer at fixed rate, e.g. at 20Hz, no matter there is screen update or not. This patch supports deferred IO for screens in graphics mode and also enables the frame buffer on-demand refresh. The highest refresh rate is still set at 20Hz. Currently Hyper-V only takes a physical address from guest as the starting address of frame buffer. This implies the guest must allocate contiguous physical memory for frame buffer. In addition, Hyper-V Gen 2 VMs only accept address from MMIO region as frame buffer address. Due to these limitations on Hyper-V host, we keep a shadow copy of frame buffer in the guest. This means one more copy of the dirty rectangle inside guest when doing the on-demand refresh. This can be optimized in the future with help from host. For now the host performance gain from deferred IO outweighs the shadow copy impact in the guest. powerpc, fbdev: Use NV_CMODE and NV_VMODE only when CONFIG_PPC32 && CONFIG_PPC_PMAC && CONFIG_NVRAM This patch addresses inconsistencies in Mac framebuffer drivers and their use of Kconfig symbols relating to NVRAM, so PPC64 can use CONFIG_NVRAM. The defined(CONFIG_NVRAM) condition is replaced with the weaker IS_REACHABLE(CONFIG_NVRAM) condition, like atari_scsi. Macintosh framebuffer drivers use default settings for color mode and video mode that are found in NVRAM. On PCI Macs, MacOS stores display settings in the Name Registry (NR) partition in NVRAM*. On NuBus Macs, there is no NR partition and MacOS stores display mode settings in PRAM**. Early-model Macs are the ones most likely to benefit from these settings, since they are more likely to have a fixed-frequency monitor connected to the built-in framebuffer device. Moreover, a single NV_CMODE value and a single NV_VMODE value provide for only one display. The NV_CMODE and NV_VMODE constants are apparently offsets into the NR partition for Old World machines. This also suggests that these defaults are not useful on later models. The NR partition seems to be optional on New World machines. CONFIG_NVRAM cannot be enabled on PPC64 at present. It is safe to say that NVRAM support in PowerMac fbdev drivers is only applicable to CONFIG_PPC32 so make this condition explicit. This means matroxfb driver won't crash on PPC64 when CONFIG_NVRAM becomes available there. For imsttfb, add the missing CONFIG_NVRAM test to prevent a build failure, since PPC64 does not implement nvram_read_byte(). Also add a missing machine_is(powermac) check. Change the inconsistent dependency on CONFIG_PPC and the matching #ifdef tests to CONFIG_PPC_PMAC. For valkyriefb, to improve clarity and consistency with the other PowerMac fbdev drivers, test for CONFIG_PPC_PMAC instead of !CONFIG_MAC. Remove a bogus comment regarding PRAM. * See GetPreferredConfiguration and SavePreferredConfiguration in "Designing PCI Cards and Drivers for Power Macintosh Computers". ** See SetDefaultMode and GetDefaultMode in "Designing Cards and Drivers for the Macintosh Family". fbdev: fix broken menu dependencies The framebuffer options and devices menu is unintentionally split or broken because some items in it do not depend on FB (including several under omap and mmp). Fix this by moving FB_CMDLINE, FB_NOTIFY, and FB_CLPS711X_OLD to just before the FB Kconfig symbol definition and by moving the omap, omap2, and mmp menus to last, following FB_SM712. xen kconfig: don't "select INPUT_XEN_KBDDEV_FRONTEND" The Xen framebuffer driver selects the xen keyboard driver, so the latter will be built-in if XEN_FBDEV_FRONTEND=y. However, when CONFIG_INPUT is a loadable module, this configuration cannot work. On mainline kernels, the symbol will be enabled but not used, while in combination with a patch I have to detect such useless configurations, we get the expected link failure: drivers/input/built-in.o: In function `xenkbd_remove': xen-kbdfront.c:(.text+0x2f0): undefined reference to `input_unregister_device' xen-kbdfront.c:(.text+0x30e): undefined reference to `input_unregister_device' This removes the extra "select", as it just causes more trouble than it helps. In theory, some defconfig file might break if it has XEN_FBDEV_FRONTEND in it but not INPUT_XEN_KBDDEV_FRONTEND. The Kconfig fragment we ship in the kernel (kernel/configs/xen.config) however already enables both, and anyone using an old .config file would keep having both enabled. video: mx3fb: always enable BACKLIGHT_LCD_SUPPORT Commit 7edaa761ee81b ("video: mx3fb: Add backlight control support") changed the mx3fb driver so it always selects the BACKLIGHT_CLASS_DEVICE symbol, but that is hidden behind BACKLIGHT_LCD_SUPPORT in Kconfig, so we get a Kconfig warning for multi_v5_defconfig, which doesn't have that: Warning: (DRM_RADEON && DRM_NOUVEAU && DRM_I915 && DRM_GMA500 && DRM_SHMOBILE && DRM_TILCDC && FB_BACKLIGHT && FB_MX3 && USB_APPLEDISPLAY && FB_OLPC_DCON && ASUS_LAPTOP && SONY_LAPTOP && THINKPAD_ACPI && EEEPC_LAPTOP && ACPI_CMPC && SAMSUNG_Q10) selects BACKLIGHT_CLASS_DEVICE which has unmet direct dependencies (HAS_IOMEM && BACKLIGHT_LCD_SUPPORT) This makes sure we always enable both symbols together for mx3fb, like we do for the other drivers that can't be built without backlight support. video: fix up versatile CLCD helper move commit 11c32d7b6274cb0f ("video: move Versatile CLCD helpers") moved files out of the plat-versatile directory but in the process got a few of the dependencies wrong: - If CONFIG_FB is not set, the file no longer gets built, resulting in a link error - If CONFIG_FB or CONFIG_FB_ARMCLCD are disabled, we also get a Kconfig warning for incorrect dependencies due to the symbol being 'select'ed from the platform Kconfig. - When the file is not built, we also get a link error for missing symbols. video/nuc900: allow modular build The frame buffer core may be a loadable module, and in this case, the nuc900 driver cannot be built-in. Turning it into a tristate option lets Kconfig work out the dependency and avoid broken builds. video: sh_mobile_lcdcfb depends on meram The sh_mobile_lcdcfb driver calls interfaces provided by the corresponding "meram" helper. This fails if meram is a module but lcdcfb is built-in. To work around it, this uses special Kconfig magic to only allow lcdcfb to be built if a) both are modules, b) meram is built-in, or c) meram is disabled and the helpers stubbed out Changing meram from 'y' to 'm' now forces clcd to be a module as well, which seems to be the desired behavior. video: move fbdev to drivers/video/fbdev The drivers/video directory is a mess. It contains generic video related files, directories for backlight, console, linux logo, lots of fbdev device drivers, fbdev framework files. Make some order into the chaos by creating drivers/video/fbdev directory, and move all fbdev related files there. No functionality is changed, although I guess it is possible that some subtle Makefile build order related issue could be created by this patch.
