soundwire: bus: introduce controller_id The existing SoundWire support misses a clear Controller/Manager hiearchical definition to deal with all variants across SOC vendors. a) Intel platforms have one controller with 4 or more Managers. b) AMD platforms have two controllers with one Manager each, but due to BIOS issues use two different link_id values within the scope of a single controller. c) QCOM platforms have one or more controller with one Manager each. This patch adds a 'controller_id' which can be set by higher levels. If assigned to -1, the controller_id will be set to the system-unique IDA-assigned bus->id. The main change is that the bus->id is no longer used for any device name, which makes the definition completely predictable and not dependent on any enumeration order. The bus->id is only used to insert the Managers in the stream rt context. soundwire: bus: improve error handling for clock stop prepare/deprepare The same logic is used for clock stop prepare and deprepare, and having different logs for the two steps helps identify problems. In addition, when the "NotFinished" bit remains set, the error handling is not quite right: a) for the clock stop prepare, the error is handled at the caller level, and the error is ignored: there's no good reason to prevent the pm_runtime suspend from happening. Throwing an error that is later ignored is confusing. b) for the clock stop deprepare, the error is ignored in bus.c and a dev_warn() log shown. Throwing an error is also alarming users for no good reason. For both cases, demoting the error to dev_dbg() makes more sense. soundwire: bus: Allow SoundWire peripherals to register IRQ handlers Currently the in-band alerts for SoundWire peripherals can only be communicated to the driver through the interrupt_callback function. This however is slightly inconvenient for devices that wish to share IRQ handling code between SoundWire and I2C/SPI, the later would normally register an IRQ handler with the IRQ subsystem. However there is no reason the SoundWire in-band IRQs can not also be communicated as an actual IRQ to the driver. Add support for SoundWire peripherals to register a normal IRQ handler to receive SoundWire in-band alerts, allowing code to be shared across control buses. Note that we allow users to use both the interrupt_callback and the IRQ handler, this is useful for devices which must clear additional chip specific SoundWire registers that are not a part of the normal IRQ flow, or the SoundWire specification. soundwire: fix enumeration completion The soundwire subsystem uses two completion structures that allow drivers to wait for soundwire device to become enumerated on the bus and initialised by their drivers, respectively. The code implementing the signalling is currently broken as it does not signal all current and future waiters and also uses the wrong reinitialisation function, which can potentially lead to memory corruption if there are still waiters on the queue. Not signalling future waiters specifically breaks sound card probe deferrals as codec drivers can not tell that the soundwire device is already attached when being reprobed. Some codec runtime PM implementations suffer from similar problems as waiting for enumeration during resume can also timeout despite the device already having been enumerated. soundwire: bus: add new manager callback to deal with peripheral enumeration When a peripheral reports as ATTACHED, the manager may need to follow a programming sequence, e.g. to assign DMA resources and/or assign a command queue for that peripheral. This patch adds an optional callback, which will be invoked every time the peripheral attaches. This might be overkill in some scenarios, and one could argue that this should be invoked only on the first attachment. The bus does not however track this first attachment with any existing state-mirroring variable, and using dev_num_sticky would not work across suspend-resume cycles. soundwire: bus: Don't filter slave alerts It makes sense to have only a single point responsible for ensuring that all currently pending IRQs are handled. The current code in sdw_handle_slave_alerts confusingly splits this process in two. This code will loop until the asserted IRQs are cleared but it will only handle IRQs that were already asserted when it was called. This means the caller must also loop (either manually, or through its IRQ mechanism) until the IRQs are all handled. It makes sense to either do all the looping in sdw_handle_slave_alerts or do no looping there and let the host controller repeatedly call it until things are handled. There are realistically two sensible host controllers, those that will generate an IRQ when the alert status changes and those that will generate an IRQ continuously whilst the alert status is high. The current code will work fine for the second of those systems but not the first with out additional looping in the host controller. Removing the code that filters out new IRQs whilst the handler is running enables both types of host controller to be supported and simplifies the code. The code will still only loop up to SDW_READ_INTR_CLEAR_RETRY times, so it shouldn't be possible for it to get completely stuck handling IRQs forever, and if you are generating IRQs faster than you can handle them you likely have bigger problems anyway. This fixes an issue on the Cadence SoundWire IP, which only generates IRQs on an alert status change, where an alert which arrives whilst another alert is being handled will never be handled and will block all future alerts from being handled. soundwire: bus: Fix unbalanced pm_runtime_put() causing usage count underflow This reverts commit 443a98e649b4 ("soundwire: bus: use pm_runtime_resume_and_get()") Change calls to pm_runtime_resume_and_get() back to pm_runtime_get_sync(). This fixes a usage count underrun caused by doing a pm_runtime_put() even though pm_runtime_resume_and_get() returned an error. The three affected functions ignore -EACCES error from trying to get pm_runtime, and carry on, including a put at the end of the function. But pm_runtime_resume_and_get() does not increment the usage count if it returns an error. So in the -EACCES case you must not call pm_runtime_put(). The documentation for pm_runtime_get_sync() says: "Consider using pm_runtime_resume_and_get() ... as this is likely to result in cleaner code." In this case I don't think it results in cleaner code because the pm_runtime_put() at the end of the function would have to be conditional on the return value from pm_runtime_resume_and_get() at the top of the function. pm_runtime_get_sync() doesn't have this problem because it always increments the count, so always needs a put. The code can just flow through and do the pm_runtime_put() unconditionally. soundwire: bus: Update sdw_nread/nwrite_no_pm to handle page boundaries Currently issuing a sdw_nread/nwrite_no_pm across a page boundary will silently fail to write correctly as nothing updates the page registers, meaning the same page of the chip will get rewritten with each successive page of data. As the sdw_msg structure contains page information it seems reasonable that a single sdw_msg should always be within one page. It is also mostly simpler to handle the paging at the bus level rather than each master having to handle it in their xfer_msg callback. As such add handling to the bus code to split up a transfer into multiple sdw_msg's when they go across page boundaries. If no device was actually programmed with an ID there won't be a new ATTACHED indication. This can lead to the status of other peripherals not being handled. The status passed to sdw_handle_slave_status() is obviously always from a point of time in the past, and may indicate accumulated unhandled events (depending how the bus manager operates). It's possible that a device ID is reprogrammed but the last PING status captured state just before that, when it was still reporting on ID #0. Then sdw_handle_slave_status() is called with this PING info, just before a new PING status is available showing it now on its new ID. So sdw_handle_slave_status() will receive a phantom report of a device on #0, but it will not find one. soundwire: bus: Don't re-enumerate before status is UNATTACHED Don't re-enumerate a peripheral on #0 until we have seen and handled an UNATTACHED notification for that peripheral. Without this, it is possible for the UNATTACHED status to be missed and so the slave->status remains at ATTACHED. If slave->status never changes to UNATTACHED the child driver will never be notified of the UNATTACH, and the code in sdw_handle_slave_status() will skip the second part of enumeration because the slave->status has not changed. This scenario can happen because PINGs are handled in a workqueue function which is working from a snapshot of an old PING, and there is no guarantee when this function will run. A peripheral could report attached in the PING being handled by sdw_handle_slave_status(), but has since reverted to device #0 and is then found in the loop in sdw_program_device_num(). Previously the code would not have updated slave->status to UNATTACHED because it had not yet handled a PING where that peripheral had UNATTACHED. This situation happens fairly frequently with multiple peripherals on a bus that are intentionally reset (for example after downloading firmware). soundwire: bus: Don't lose unattach notifications Ensure that if sdw_handle_slave_status() sees a peripheral has dropped off the bus it reports it to the client driver. If there are any devices reporting on address 0 it bails out after programming the device IDs. So it never reaches the second loop that calls sdw_update_slave_status(). If the missing device is one that is now showing as unenumerated it has been given a device ID so will report as attached next time sdw_handle_slave_status() runs. With the previous code the client driver would only see another ATTACHED notification because the UNATTACHED state was lost when sdw_handle_slave_status() bailed out after programming the device ID. This shows up most when the peripheral has to be reset after downloading updated firmware and there are multiple of these peripherals on the bus. They will all return to unenumerated state after the reset, and then there is a mix of unattached, attached and unenumerated PING states from the peripherals, as each is reset and they reboot. soundwire: bus: allow device number to be unique at system level The SoundWire specification allows the device number to be allocated at will. When a system includes multiple SoundWire links, the device number scope is limited to the link to which the device is attached. However, for integration/debug it can be convenient to have a unique device number across the system. This patch adds a 'dev_num_ida_min' field at the bus level, which when set will be used to allocate an IDA. The allocation happens when a hardware device reports as ATTACHED. If any error happens during the enumeration, the allocated IDA is not freed - the device number will be reused if/when the device re-joins the bus. The IDA is only freed when the Linux device is unregistered. soundwire: revisit driver bind/unbind and callbacks In the SoundWire probe, we store a pointer from the driver ops into the 'slave' structure. This can lead to kernel oopses when unbinding codec drivers, e.g. with the following sequence to remove machine driver and codec driver. /sbin/modprobe -r snd_soc_sof_sdw /sbin/modprobe -r snd_soc_rt711 The full details can be found in the BugLink below, for reference the two following examples show different cases of driver ops/callbacks being invoked after the driver .remove(). kernel: BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000150 kernel: Workqueue: events cdns_update_slave_status_work [soundwire_cadence] kernel: RIP: 0010:mutex_lock+0x19/0x30 kernel: Call Trace: kernel: ? sdw_handle_slave_status+0x426/0xe00 [soundwire_bus 94ff184bf398570c3f8ff7efe9e32529f532e4ae] kernel: ? newidle_balance+0x26a/0x400 kernel: ? cdns_update_slave_status_work+0x1e9/0x200 [soundwire_cadence 1bcf98eebe5ba9833cd433323769ac923c9c6f82] kernel: BUG: unable to handle page fault for address: ffffffffc07654c8 kernel: Workqueue: pm pm_runtime_work kernel: RIP: 0010:sdw_bus_prep_clk_stop+0x6f/0x160 [soundwire_bus] kernel: Call Trace: kernel: <TASK> kernel: sdw_cdns_clock_stop+0xb5/0x1b0 [soundwire_cadence 1bcf98eebe5ba9833cd433323769ac923c9c6f82] kernel: intel_suspend_runtime+0x5f/0x120 [soundwire_intel aca858f7c87048d3152a4a41bb68abb9b663a1dd] kernel: ? dpm_sysfs_remove+0x60/0x60 This was not detected earlier in Intel tests since the tests first remove the parent PCI device and shut down the bus. The sequence above is a corner case which keeps the bus operational but without a driver bound. While trying to solve this kernel oopses, it became clear that the existing SoundWire bus does not deal well with the unbind case. Commit 528be501b7d4a ("soundwire: sdw_slave: add probe_complete structure and new fields") added a 'probed' status variable and a 'probe_complete' struct completion. This status is however not reset on remove and likewise the 'probe complete' is not re-initialized, so the bind/unbind/bind test cases would fail. The timeout used before the 'update_status' callback was also a bad idea in hindsight, there should really be no timing assumption as to if and when a driver is bound to a device. An initial draft was based on device_lock() and device_unlock() was tested. This proved too complicated, with deadlocks created during the suspend-resume sequences, which also use the same device_lock/unlock() as the bind/unbind sequences. On a CometLake device, a bad DSDT/BIOS caused spurious resumes and the use of device_lock() caused hangs during suspend. After multiple weeks or testing and painful reverse-engineering of deadlocks on different devices, we looked for alternatives that did not interfere with the device core. A bus notifier was used successfully to keep track of DRIVER_BOUND and DRIVER_UNBIND events. This solved the bind-unbind-bind case in tests, but it can still be defeated with a theoretical corner case where the memory is freed by a .remove while the callback is in use. The notifier only helps make sure the driver callbacks are valid, but not that the memory allocated in probe remains valid while the callbacks are invoked. This patch suggests the introduction of a new 'sdw_dev_lock' mutex protecting probe/remove and all driver callbacks. Since this mutex is 'local' to SoundWire only, it does not interfere with existing locks and does not create deadlocks. In addition, this patch removes the 'probe_complete' completion, instead we directly invoke the 'update_status' from the probe routine. That removes any sort of timing dependency and a much better support for the device/driver model, the driver could be bound before the bus started, or eons after the bus started and the hardware would be properly initialized in all cases. soundwire: bus: pm_runtime_request_resume on peripheral attachment In typical use cases, the peripheral becomes pm_runtime active as a result of the ALSA/ASoC framework starting up a DAI. The parent/child hierarchy guarantees that the manager device will be fully resumed beforehand. There is however a corner case where the manager device may become pm_runtime active, but without ALSA/ASoC requesting any functionality from the peripherals. In this case, the hardware peripheral device will report as ATTACHED and its initialization routine will be executed. If this initialization routine initiates any sort of deferred processing, there is a possibility that the manager could suspend without the peripheral suspend sequence being invoked: from the pm_runtime framework perspective, the peripheral is *already* suspended. To avoid such disconnects between hardware state and pm_runtime state, this patch adds an asynchronous pm_request_resume() upon successful attach/initialization which will result in the proper resume/suspend sequence to be followed on the peripheral side. soundwire: bus: handle -ENODATA errors in clock stop/start sequences If a device lost sync and can no longer ACK a command, it may not be able to enter a lower-power state but it will still be able to resync when the clock restarts. In those cases, we want to continue with the clock stop sequence. This patch modifies the behavior during clock stop sequences to only log errors unrelated to -ENODATA/Command_Ignored. The flow is also modified so that loops continue to prepare/deprepare other devices even when one seems to have lost sync. When resuming the clocks, all issues are logged with a dev_warn(), previously only some of them were checked. This is the only part that now differs between the clock stop entry and clock stop exit sequences: while we don't want to stop the suspend flow, we do want information on potential issues while resuming, as they may have ripple effects. For consistency the log messages are also modified to be unique and self-explanatory. Errors in sdw_slave_clk_stop_callback() were removed, they are now handled in the caller. soundwire: bus: fix confusion on device used by pm_runtime Intel stress-tests routinely report IO timeouts and invalid power management transitions. Upon further analysis, we seem to be using the wrong devices in pm_runtime calls. Before reading and writing registers, we first need to make sure the Slave is fully resumed. The existing code attempts to do such that, however because of a confusion dating from 2017 and copy/paste, we end-up resuming the parent only instead of resuming the codec device. This can lead to accesses to the Slave registers while the bus is still being configured and the Slave not enumerated, and as a result IO errors occur. This is a classic problem, similar confusions happened for HDaudio between bus and codec device, leading to power management issues. Fix by using the relevant device for all uses of pm_runtime functions. soundwire: bus: add comments to explain interrupt loop filter The interrupt handling in SoundWire requires software to re-read the interrupt status after clearing an interrupt. In case the interrupt is still outstanding, the code in bus.c will loop a number of times, however that loop is limited to the interrupts detected in the first read. This strategy helps meet SoundWire requirements without remaining forever in an interrupt handler. Add a couple of comments to document this design. soundwire: SDCA: detect sdca_cascade interrupt The SoundWire 1.2 specification defines an "SDCA cascade" bit which handles a logical OR of all SDCA interrupt sources (up to 30 defined). Due to limitations of the addressing space, this bit is located in the SDW_DP0_INT register when DP0 is used, or alternatively in the DP0_SDCA_Support_INTSTAT register when DP0 is not used. To allow for both cases to be handled, this bit will be checked in the main device-level interrupt handling code. This will result in the register being read twice if DP0 is enabled, but it's not clear how to optimize this case. It's also more logical to deal with this interrupt at the device than the port level, this bit is really not DP0 specific and its location in the DP0_INTSTAT bit is only due to the lack of free space in SCP_INTSTAT_1. The SDCA_Cascade bit cannot be masked or cleared, so the interrupt handling only forwards the detection to the Slave driver, which will deal with reading the relevant SDCA status bits and clearing them. The bus driver only signals the detection. The communication with the Slave driver is based on the same interrupt callback, with only an extension to provide the status of the sdca_cascade bit. soundwire: bus: filter-out unwanted interrupt reports Unlike the traditional usage, in the SoundWire specification the interrupt masks only gate the propagation of an interrupt condition to the PING frame status. They do not gate the changes of the INT_STAT registers, which will happen regardless of the mask settings. See Figure 116 of the SoundWire 1.2 specification for an in-depth description of the interrupt model. When the bus driver reads the SCP_INT1_STAT register, it will retrieve all the interrupt status, including for the mask fields that were not explicitly set. For example, even if the PARITY mask is not set, the PARITY error status will be reported if an implementation-defined interrupt for jack detection is enabled and occurs. Filtering undesired interrupt reports and handling has to be implemented in software. This patch enables this filtering for the INT1_IMPL_DEF, PARITY and BUS_CLASH interrupt sources. ASoC/soundwire: bus: use property to set interrupt masks Add a slave-level property and program the SCP_INT1_MASK as desired by the codec driver. Since there is no DisCo property this has to be an implementation-specific firmware property or hard-coded in the driver. soundwire: bus_type: add sdw_master_device support In the existing SoundWire code, Master Devices are not explicitly represented - only SoundWire Slave Devices are exposed (the use of capital letters follows the SoundWire specification conventions). With the existing code, the bus is handled without using a proper device, and bus->dev typically points to a platform device. The right thing to do as discussed in multiple reviews is use a device for each bus. The sdw_master_device addition is done with minimal internal plumbing and not exposed externally. The existing API based on sdw_bus_master_add() and sdw_bus_master_delete() will deal with the sdw_master_device life cycle, which minimizes changes to existing drivers. soundwire: bus: fix io error when processing alert event There are two types of io errors when processing alert event. a) the Master detects an ALERT status for e.g. a jack event and invokes the implementation-defined function in the Slave driver to check the jack status. At this time the codec is just suspended, so io registers can't be accessed. b) when waking up from clock stop mode1 state, where the bus needs a complete re-enumeration, Slave registers can't be accessed until the enumeration is complete. This patch resumes the Slave device and waits for initialization complete when processing slave alert event, so that registers on the Slave can be accessed without timeouts or io errors. soundwire: bus: add helper to clear Slave status to UNATTACHED When resuming with a bus reset, we need to re-enumerate and restart from UNATTACHED. The helper added in this patch helps implement a more robust state machine avoiding race conditions on resume. The unattach request is stored and will be used by Slave drivers, if needed: Intel validation exposed a corner case where the Slave device may transition to D3 when streaming stops, but streaming restarts before the Master transitions to D3. In that case, the Slave status was not cleared as UNATTACHED by the Master resuming, and the wait_for_completion will time out. When the slave resumes, it can check if a Master-initiated re-enumeration and initialization took place and skip the wait_for_completion() if there is no reason to wait. soundwire: bus: fix race condition with initialization_complete signaling Waiting for the enumeration to be complete may not be enough for a Slave driver, there is a possible race condition between resume operations and initializations handled in an interrupt thread, which can results in settings not being fully restored after system or pm_runtime resume. This patch builds on the changes added for enumeration_complete, init_completion() is called when the Slave device becomes UNATTACHED, as done with enumeration_complete. The difference with the enumeration_complete case is that complete() is signaled after the Slave device is fully initialized after the .update_status() callback is called. A Slave device driver can decide to wait on either of the two complete() cases, depending on its initialization code and requirements. soundwire: bus: fix race condition with probe_complete signaling The driver probe takes care of basic initialization and is invoked when a Slave becomes attached, after a match between the Slave DevID registers and ACPI/DT entries. The update_status callback is invoked when a Slave state changes, e.g. when it is assigned a non-zero Device Number and it reports with an ATTACHED/ALERT state. The state change detection is usually hardware-based and based on the SoundWire frame rate (e.g. double-digit microseconds) while the probe is a pure software operation, which may involve a kernel module load. In corner cases, it's possible that the state changes before the probe completes. This patch suggests the use of wait_for_completion to avoid races on startup, so that the update_status callback does not rely on invalid pointers/data structures. soundwire: rename/clarify MIPI DisCo properties The existing definitions are ambiguous and possibly misleading. For DP0, 'flow-control' is only relevant for the BRA protocol and should not be confused with async modes explicitly not supported for DP0, add prefix to follow MIPI DisCo definition The use of 'device_interrupts' is also questionable. The MIPI SoundWire spec defines Slave-, DP0- and DPN-level implementation-defined interrupts. Using the 'device' prefix in the last two cases is misleading, not only is the term 'device' overloaded but these properties are only valid at the DP0 and DPn levels. Rename to follow the MIPI definitions, no need to be creative here. Signed-off-by: Pierre-Louis Bossart <pierre-louis.bossart@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Vinod Koul <vkoul@kernel.org>

soundwire: fix sign extension when shifting buf[2] 24 places The buf[2] left shift by 24 bits is promoted to int (32 bit signed) and then signed-extended to unsigned long long. Hence if the upper bit to buf[2] is set then all the upper bits of addr end up as 1. Fix this by casting it to u64 before shifting it. Also replace the unsigned long long casts to u64 casts to match the same type of addr. soundwire: Add MIPI DisCo property helpers MIPI Discovery And Configuration (DisCo) Specification for SoundWire specifies properties to be implemented for SoundWire Masters and Slaves. The DisCo spec doesn't mandate these properties. However, SDW bus cannot work without knowing these values. The helper functions read the Master and Slave properties. Implementers of Master or Slave drivers can use any of the below three mechanisms: a) Use these APIs here as .read_prop() callback for Master and Slave b) Implement own methods and set those as .read_prop(), but invoke APIs in this file for generic read and override the values with platform specific data c) Implement ones own methods which do not use anything provided here Signed-off-by: Sanyog Kale <sanyog.r.kale@intel.com> Reviewed-by: Philippe Ombredanne <pombredanne@nexb.com> Acked-By: Pierre-Louis Bossart <pierre-louis.bossart@linux.intel.com> Reviewed-by: Takashi Iwai <tiwai@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Vinod Koul <vinod.koul@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>
