parisc: Remove 64bit access on 32bit machines The parisc was using some readq/writeq accessors without special considerations as to what will happen on 32bit CPUs if you do this. Maybe we have been lucky that it "just worked" on 32bit due to the compiler behaviour, or the code paths were never executed. dma-mapping: add a new dma_alloc_pages API This API is the equivalent of alloc_pages, except that the returned memory is guaranteed to be DMA addressable by the passed in device. The implementation will also be used to provide a more sensible replacement for DMA_ATTR_NON_CONSISTENT flag. Additionally dma_alloc_noncoherent is switched over to use dma_alloc_pages as its backend. dma-mapping: introduce dma_get_seg_boundary_nr_pages() We found that callers of dma_get_seg_boundary mostly do an ALIGN with page mask and then do a page shift to get number of pages: ALIGN(boundary + 1, 1 << shift) >> shift However, the boundary might be as large as ULONG_MAX, which means that a device has no specific boundary limit. So either "+ 1" or passing it to ALIGN() would potentially overflow. According to kernel defines: #define ALIGN_MASK(x, mask) (((x) + (mask)) & ~(mask)) #define ALIGN(x, a) ALIGN_MASK(x, (typeof(x))(a) - 1) We can simplify the logic here into a helper function doing: ALIGN(boundary + 1, 1 << shift) >> shift = ALIGN_MASK(b + 1, (1 << s) - 1) >> s = {[b + 1 + (1 << s) - 1] & ~[(1 << s) - 1]} >> s = [b + 1 + (1 << s) - 1] >> s = [b + (1 << s)] >> s = (b >> s) + 1 This patch introduces and applies dma_get_seg_boundary_nr_pages() as an overflow-free helper for the dma_get_seg_boundary() callers to get numbers of pages. parisc: Remove 32-bit DMA enforcement from sba_iommu This breaks booting from sata_sil24 with the recent DMA change. According to James Bottomley this was in to improve performance by kicking the device into 32 bit descriptors, which are usually more efficient, especially with older dual descriptor format cards like we have on parisc systems. Remove it for now to make DMA working again. parisc: don't set ARCH_NO_COHERENT_DMA_MMAP parisc is the only architecture that sets ARCH_NO_COHERENT_DMA_MMAP when an MMU is enabled. AFAIK this is because parisc CPUs use VIVT caches, which means exporting normally cachable memory to userspace is relatively dangrous due to cache aliasing. But normally cachable memory is only allocated by dma_alloc_coherent on parisc when using the sba_iommu or ccio_iommu drivers, so just remove the .mmap implementation for them so that we don't have to set ARCH_NO_COHERENT_DMA_MMAP, which I plan to get rid of. So remove the defaults if these methods are not wired up, but instead wire up the default implementations for all safe instances. parisc: Use lpa instruction to load physical addresses in driver code Most I/O in the kernel is done using the kernel offset mapping. However, there is one API that uses aliased kernel address ranges: > The final category of APIs is for I/O to deliberately aliased address > ranges inside the kernel. Such aliases are set up by use of the > vmap/vmalloc API. Since kernel I/O goes via physical pages, the I/O > subsystem assumes that the user mapping and kernel offset mapping are > the only aliases. This isn't true for vmap aliases, so anything in > the kernel trying to do I/O to vmap areas must manually manage > coherency. It must do this by flushing the vmap range before doing > I/O and invalidating it after the I/O returns. For this reason, we should use the hardware lpa instruction to load the physical address of kernel virtual addresses in the driver code. I believe we only use the vmap/vmalloc API with old PA 1.x processors which don't have a sba, so we don't hit this problem. Tested on c3750, c8000 and rp3440. parisc: Use implicit space register selection for loading the coherence index of I/O pdirs We only support I/O to kernel space. Using %sr1 to load the coherence index may be racy unless interrupts are disabled. This patch changes the code used to load the coherence index to use implicit space register selection. This saves one instruction and eliminates the race. Tested on rp3440, c8000 and c3750. parisc: Add alternative coding infrastructure This patch adds the necessary code to patch a running kernel at runtime to improve performance. The current implementation offers a few optimizations variants: - When running a SMP kernel on a single UP processor, unwanted assembler statements like locking functions are overwritten with NOPs. When multiple instructions shall be skipped, one branch instruction is used instead of multiple nop instructions. - In the UP case, some pdtlb and pitlb instructions are patched to become pdtlb,l and pitlb,l which only flushes the CPU-local tlb entries instead of broadcasting the flush to other CPUs in the system and thus may improve performance. - fic and fdc instructions are skipped if no I- or D-caches are installed. This should speed up qemu emulation and cacheless systems. - If no cache coherence is needed for IO operations, the relevant fdc and sync instructions in the sba and ccio drivers are replaced by nops. - On systems which share I- and D-TLBs and thus don't have a seperate instruction TLB, the pitlb instruction is replaced by a nop. Live-patching is done early in the boot process, just after having run the system inventory. No drivers are running and thus no external interrupts should arrive. dma-mapping: use unsigned long for dma_attrs The dma-mapping core and the implementations do not change the DMA attributes passed by pointer. Thus the pointer can point to const data. However the attributes do not have to be a bitfield. Instead unsigned long will do fine: 1. This is just simpler. Both in terms of reading the code and setting attributes. Instead of initializing local attributes on the stack and passing pointer to it to dma_set_attr(), just set the bits. 2. It brings safeness and checking for const correctness because the attributes are passed by value. parisc: fix partly 16/64k PAGE_SIZE boot This patch fixes partly PAGE_SIZEs of 16K or 64K by adjusting the assembler PTE lookup code and the assembler TEMPALIAS code. Furthermore some data alignments for PAGE_SIZE have been limited to 4K (or less) to not waste too much memory with greater page sizes. As a side note, the palo loader can (currently) only handle up to 10 ELF segments which is fixed with tighter aligning as well. My testings indicated that the ldci command in the sba iommu coding needed adjustment by the PAGE_SHIFT value and that the I/O PDIR Page size was only set to 4K for my machine (C3000). All this fixes partly the boot, but there are still quite some caching problems left. Examples are e.g. the symbios logic driver which is failing: sym0: <896> rev 0x7 at pci 0000:00:0f.0 irq 69 sym0: PA-RISC Firmware, ID 7, Fast-40, SE, parity checking CACHE TEST FAILED: DMA error (dstat=0x81).sym0: CACHE INCORRECTLY CONFIGURED. and the tulip network driver which doesn't seem to work correctly either: Sending BOOTP requests .net eth0: Setting full-duplex based on MII#1 link partner capability of 05e1 ..... timed out! [PATCH] mark struct file_operations const 5 Many struct file_operations in the kernel can be "const". Marking them const moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential dirty data. In addition it'll catch accidental writes at compile time to these shared resources. [PARISC] Document that we tolerate "Relaxed Ordering" This means "DMA Read returns" can bypass "MMIO Writes". Violating the PCI specs in this case improves outbound DMA "flows" and is currently not required by any drivers. This is NOT a new behavior. Previous chipsets did this already and I believe ZX1 PDC was already setting this for hpux. I just want to further document the behavior. Ie the SBA could pick up a stale entry if the write happened to hit the SBA before the cacheline was flushed from the cache. Long term, I think I want to make this a compile time flag. Developement tree should enable anal pdir checking by default and Debian can disable it with either a CONFIG option or one-line patch. fdc/sync options can only negatively affect performance though I haven't measure how much yet. If someone can run netperf TCP_RR across gige and compare -pa1 and -pa2, that would be sufficient. Cleaned up the use of "fdc" to make sure it's using "kernel" space id (specify sr0 but maps to sr4-7). It seems a bit fragile to assume "sr1" gets loaded with KERNEL_SPACE which is how the code works today. Tested on 32 and 64-bit SMP kernels on j6k. Kudos to jejb for quickly spotting that bug. o jejb also noted SBA should *always* reject DMA masks > 32-bits since DMA-mapping.txt indicates caller should try again with 32-bits. o off-by-one error when comparing the mask to IOVA space size. Linux-2.6.12-rc2 Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
