net: usb: ax88179_178a: avoid writing the mac address before first reading After the commit d2689b6a86b9 ("net: usb: ax88179_178a: avoid two consecutive device resets"), reset operation, in which the default mac address from the device is read, is not executed from bind operation and the random address, that is pregenerated just in case, is direclty written the first time in the device, so the default one from the device is not even read. This writing is not dangerous because is volatile and the default mac address is not missed. In order to avoid this and keep the simplification to have only one reset and reduce the delays, restore the reset from bind operation and remove the reset that is commanded from open operation. The behavior is the same but everything is ready for usbnet_probe. Tested with ASIX AX88179 USB Gigabit Ethernet devices. Restore the old behavior for the rest of possible devices because I don't have the hardware to test. cc: stable@vger.kernel.org # 6.6+ Fixes: d2689b6a86b9 ("net: usb: ax88179_178a: avoid two consecutive device resets") Reported-by: Jarkko Palviainen <jarkko.palviainen@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Jose Ignacio Tornos Martinez <jtornosm@redhat.com> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20240417085524.219532-1-jtornosm@redhat.com Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org>

net: usb: ax88179_178a: avoid the interface always configured as random address After the commit d2689b6a86b9 ("net: usb: ax88179_178a: avoid two consecutive device resets"), reset is not executed from bind operation and mac address is not read from the device registers or the devicetree at that moment. Since the check to configure if the assigned mac address is random or not for the interface, happens after the bind operation from usbnet_probe, the interface keeps configured as random address, although the address is correctly read and set during open operation (the only reset now). In order to keep only one reset for the device and to avoid the interface always configured as random address, after reset, configure correctly the suitable field from the driver, if the mac address is read successfully from the device registers or the devicetree. Take into account if a locally administered address (random) was previously stored. cc: stable@vger.kernel.org # 6.6+ Fixes: d2689b6a86b9 ("net: usb: ax88179_178a: avoid two consecutive device resets") Reported-by: Dave Stevenson <dave.stevenson@raspberrypi.com> Signed-off-by: Jose Ignacio Tornos Martinez <jtornosm@redhat.com> Reviewed-by: Simon Horman <horms@kernel.org> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20240403132158.344838-1-jtornosm@redhat.com Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org>

AX88179 Gigabit Ethernet device, the following test cycle has been implemented: - power on - check logs - shutdown - after detecting the system shutdown, disconnect power - after approximately 60 seconds of sleep, power is restored Running some cycles, sometimes error logs like this appear: kernel: ax88179_178a 2-9:1.0 (unnamed net_device) (uninitialized): Failed to write reg index 0x0001: -19 kernel: ax88179_178a 2-9:1.0 (unnamed net_device) (uninitialized): Failed to read reg index 0x0001: -19 ... These failed operation are happening during ax88179_reset execution, so the initialization could not be correct. In order to avoid this, we need to increase the delay after reset and clock initial operations. By using these larger values, many cycles have been run and no failed operations appear. It would be better to check some status register to verify when the operation has finished, but I do not have found any available information (neither in the public datasheets nor in the manufacturer's driver). The only available information for the necessary delays is the maufacturer's driver (original values) but the proposed values are not enough for the tested devices. net: usb: ax88179_178a: Bind only to vendor-specific interface The Anker PowerExpand USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet adapter uses this chipset, but exposes CDC Ethernet configurations as well as the vendor specific one. This driver tries to bind by PID:VID unconditionally and ends up picking up the CDC configuration, which is supposed to be handled by the class driver. To make things even more confusing, it sees both of the CDC class interfaces and tries to bind twice, resulting in two broken Ethernet devices. Change all the ID matches to specifically match the vendor-specific interface. By default the device comes up in CDC mode and is bound by that driver (which works fine); users may switch it to the vendor interface using sysfs to set bConfigurationValue, at which point the device actually goes through a reconnect cycle and comes back as a vendor specific only device, and then this driver binds and works too. The affected device uses VID/PID 0b95:1790, but we might as well change all of them for good measure, since there is no good reason for this driver to bind to standard CDC Ethernet interfaces. v3: Added VID/PID info to commit message Signed-off-by: Hector Martin <marcan@marcan.st> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20220731072209.45504-1-marcan@marcan.st Signed-off-by: Paolo Abeni <pabeni@redhat.com>

It is "2 * packet count". Each packet have two entrys. The first have a valid value (pkt_len and AX_RXHDR_*) and the second have a dummy-header 0x80000000 (pkt_len=0 with AX_RXHDR_DROP_ERR). Why exists dummy-header for each packet?!? My guess is that this was done probably to align the entry for each packet to 64-bits and maintain compatibility with old firmware. There is also a padding (0x00000000) before the rx_hdr to align the end of rx_hdr to 64-bit. Note that packets have a alignment of 64-bits (8-bytes). This patch assumes that the dummy-header and the last padding are optional. So it preserves semantics and recognises the same valid packets as the current code. net: usb: ax88179_178a needs FLAG_SEND_ZLP The extra byte inserted by usbnet.c when (length % dev->maxpacket == 0) is causing problems to device. This patch sets FLAG_SEND_ZLP to avoid this. Tested with: 0b95:1790 ASIX Electronics Corp. AX88179 Gigabit Ethernet Problems observed: ====================================================================== 1) Using ssh/sshfs. The remote sshd daemon can abort with the message: "message authentication code incorrect" This happens because the tcp message sent is corrupted during the USB "Bulk out". The device calculate the tcp checksum and send a valid tcp message to the remote sshd. Then the encryption detects the error and aborts. 2) NETDEV WATCHDOG: ... (ax88179_178a): transmit queue 0 timed out 3) Stop normal work without any log message. The "Bulk in" continue receiving packets normally. The host sends "Bulk out" and the device responds with -ECONNRESET. (The netusb.c code tx_complete ignore -ECONNRESET) Under normal conditions these errors take days to happen and in intense usage take hours. A test with ping gives packet loss, showing that something is wrong: ping -4 -s 462 {destination} # 462 = 512 - 42 - 8 Not all packets fail. My guess is that the device tries to find another packet starting at the extra byte and will fail or not depending on the next bytes (old buffer content). ====================================================================== Signed-off-by: Jose Alonso <joalonsof@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. net: usb: ax88179_178a: Fix out-of-bounds accesses in RX fixup ax88179_rx_fixup() contains several out-of-bounds accesses that can be triggered by a malicious (or defective) USB device, in particular: - The metadata array (hdr_off..hdr_off+2*pkt_cnt) can be out of bounds, causing OOB reads and (on big-endian systems) OOB endianness flips. - A packet can overlap the metadata array, causing a later OOB endianness flip to corrupt data used by a cloned SKB that has already been handed off into the network stack. - A packet SKB can be constructed whose tail is far beyond its end, causing out-of-bounds heap data to be considered part of the SKB's data. I have tested that this can be used by a malicious USB device to send a bogus ICMPv6 Echo Request and receive an ICMPv6 Echo Reply in response that contains random kernel heap data. It's probably also possible to get OOB writes from this on a little-endian system somehow - maybe by triggering skb_cow() via IP options processing -, but I haven't tested that. ethernet: constify references to netdev->dev_addr in drivers This big patch sprinkles const on local variables and function arguments which may refer to netdev->dev_addr. Commit 406f42fa0d3c ("net-next: When a bond have a massive amount of VLANs...") introduced a rbtree for faster Ethernet address look up. To maintain netdev->dev_addr in this tree we need to make all the writes to it got through appropriate helpers. Some of the changes here are not strictly required - const is sometimes cast off but pointer is not used for writing. It seems like it's still better to add the const in case the code changes later or relevant -W flags get enabled for the build. No functional changes. net: usb: ax88179_178a: fix packet alignment padding Using a AX88179 device (0b95:1790), I see two bytes of appended data on every RX packet. For example, this 48-byte ping, using 0xff as a payload byte: 04:20:22.528472 IP 192.168.1.1 > 192.168.1.2: ICMP echo request, id 2447, seq 1, length 64 0x0000: 000a cd35 ea50 000a cd35 ea4f 0800 4500 0x0010: 0054 c116 4000 4001 f63e c0a8 0101 c0a8 0x0020: 0102 0800 b633 098f 0001 87ea cd5e 0000 0x0030: 0000 dcf2 0600 0000 0000 ffff ffff ffff 0x0040: ffff ffff ffff ffff ffff ffff ffff ffff 0x0050: ffff ffff ffff ffff ffff ffff ffff ffff 0x0060: ffff 961f Those last two bytes - 96 1f - aren't part of the original packet. In the ax88179 RX path, the usbnet rx_fixup function trims a 2-byte 'alignment pseudo header' from the start of the packet, and sets the length from a per-packet field populated by hardware. It looks like that length field *includes* the 2-byte header; the current driver assumes that it's excluded. This change trims the 2-byte alignment header after we've set the packet length, so the resulting packet length is correct. While we're moving the comment around, this also fixes the spelling of 'pseudo'. Signed-off-by: Jeremy Kerr <jk@ozlabs.org> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

net: usb: ax88179_178a: Implement ethtool_ops set_eeprom The vendor driver does upon failing to read a valid MAC address from EEPROM write the netdev's address back to EEPROM and invoking a EEPROM reload operation. Based on this we can implement the ethtool_ops set_eeprom and provide the means to populate the EEPROM from within Linux. It's worth noting that ax88179_get_eeprom() will return some default data unless the content of the EEPROM is deemed "complete", so until the EEPROM is fully populated (e.g. by running ethtool -e | ethtool -E) data written with ax88179_set_eeprom() will appear not to stick. treewide: kmalloc() -> kmalloc_array() The kmalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kmalloc_array(). This patch replaces cases of: kmalloc(a * b, gfp) with: kmalloc_array(a * b, gfp) as well as handling cases of: kmalloc(a * b * c, gfp) with: kmalloc(array3_size(a, b, c), gfp) as it's slightly less ugly than: kmalloc_array(array_size(a, b), c, gfp) This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like: kmalloc(4 * 1024, gfp) though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion. Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were dropped, since they're redundant. The tools/ directory was manually excluded, since it has its own implementation of kmalloc(). ax88179_178a: fix bonding failure The following patch fixes a bug which causes the ax88179_178a driver to be incapable of being added to a bond. When I brought up the issue with the bonding maintainers, they indicated that the real problem was with the NIC driver which must return zero for success (of setting the MAC address). I see that several other NIC drivers follow that pattern by either simply always returing zero, or by passing through a negative (error) result while rewriting any positive return code to zero. With that same philisophy applied to the ax88179_178a driver, it allows it to work correctly with the bonding driver. I believe this is suitable for queuing in -stable, as it's a small, simple, and obvious fix that corrects a defect with no other known workaround. This patch is against vanilla 3.17(.0). Revert "USBNET: ax88179_178a: enable tso if usb host supports sg dma" This reverts commit 3804fad45411b48233b48003e33a78f290d227c8. This commit, together with commit 247bf557273dd775505fb9240d2d152f4f20d304 "xhci 1.0: Limit arbitrarily-aligned scatter gather." were origially added to get xHCI 1.0 hosts and usb ethernet ax88179_178a devices working together with scatter gather. xHCI 1.0 hosts pose some requirement on how transfer buffers are aligned, setting this requirement for 1.0 hosts caused USB 3.0 mass storage devices to fail more frequently. USB 3.0 mass storage devices used to work before 3.14-rc1. Theoretically, the TD fragment rules could have caused an occasional disk glitch. Now the devices *will* fail, instead of theoretically failing. >From a user perspective, this looks like a regression; the USB device obviously fails on 3.14-rc1, and may sometimes silently fail on prior kernels. The proper soluition is to implement the TD fragment rules for xHCI 1.0 hosts, but for now, revert this patch until scatter gather can be properly supported. usbnet: remove generic hard_header_len check This patch removes a generic hard_header_len check from the usbnet module that is causing dropped packages under certain circumstances for devices that send rx packets that cross urb boundaries. One example is the AX88772B which occasionally send rx packets that cross urb boundaries where the remaining partial packet is sent with no hardware header. When the buffer with a partial packet is of less number of octets than the value of hard_header_len the buffer is discarded by the usbnet module. With AX88772B this can be reproduced by using ping with a packet size between 1965-1976. The bug has been reported here: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29082 This patch introduces the following changes: - Removes the generic hard_header_len check in the rx_complete function in the usbnet module. - Introduces a ETH_HLEN check for skbs that are not cloned from within a rx_fixup callback. - For safety a hard_header_len check is added to each rx_fixup callback function that could be affected by this change. These extra checks could possibly be removed by someone who has the hardware to test. - Removes a call to dev_kfree_skb_any() and instead utilizes the dev->done list to queue skbs for cleanup. The changes place full responsibility on the rx_fixup callback functions that clone skbs to only pass valid skbs to the usbnet_skb_return function. USBNET: ax88179_178a: enable tso if usb host supports sg dma This patch enables 'can_dma_sg' flag for ax88179_178a device if the attached host controller supports building packet from discontinuous buffers(DMA SG is possible), so TSO can be enabled and skb fragment buffers can be passed to usb stack via urb->sg directly. With the patch, system CPU utilization decreased ~50% and throughput increased by ~10% when doing iperf client test on one ARM A15 dual core board. ax88179_178a: avoid copy of tx tcp packets ax88179_tx_fixup() has quite complex code trying to push 8 bytes of control data (len/mss), but fails to do it properly for TCP packets, incurring an extra copy and point of memory allocation failure. Lets use the simple and approved way. dev->needed_headroom being 8, all frames should have 8 bytes of headroom, so the extra copy should be unlikely anyway. This patch should improve performance for TCP xmits. USBNET: centralize computing of max rx/tx qlen This patch centralizes computing of max rx/tx qlen, because: - RX_QLEN()/TX_QLEN() is called in hot path - computing depends on device's usb speed, now we have ls/fs, hs, ss, so more checks need to be involved - in fact, max rx/tx qlen should not only depend on device USB speed, but also depend on ethernet link speed, so we need to consider that in future. - if SG support is done, max tx qlen may need change too Generally, hard_mtu and rx_urb_size are changed in bind(), reset() and link_reset() callback, and change mtu network operation, this patches introduces the API of usbnet_update_max_qlen(), and calls it in above path. usbnet: do not pretend to support SG/TSO usbnet doesn't support yet SG, so drivers should not advertise SG or TSO capabilities, as they allow TCP stack to build large TSO packets that need to be linearized and might use order-5 pages. This adds an extra copy overhead and possible allocation failures. Current code ignore skb_linearize() return code so crashes are even possible. Best is to not pretend SG/TSO is supported, and add this again when/if usbnet really supports SG for devices who could get a performance gain. ax88179_178a: ASIX AX88179_178A USB 3.0/2.0 to gigabit ethernet adapter driver This is a resubmission. Added kfree() in ax88179_get_eeprom to prevent memory leakage. Modified "__le16 rxctl" to "u16 rxctl" in "struct ax88179_data" and removed pointless casts. Removed asix_init and asix_exit functions and added "module_usb_driver(ax88179_178a_driver)". Fixed endianness issue on big endian systems and verified this driver on iBook G4. Removed steps that change net->features in ax88179_set_features function. Added "const" to ethtool_ops structure and fixed the coding style of AX88179_BULKIN_SIZE array. Fixed the issue that the default MTU is not 1500. Added ax88179_change_mtu function and enabled the hardware jumbo frame function to support an MTU higher than 1500. Fixed indentation and empty line coding style errors. The _nopm version usb functions were added to access register in suspend and resume functions. Serveral variables allocted dynamically were removed and replaced by stack variables. ax88179_get_eeprom were modified from asix_get_eeprom in asix_common. This patch adds a driver for ASIX's AX88179 family of USB 3.0/2.0 to gigabit ethernet adapters. It's based on the AX88xxx driver but the usb commands used to access registers for AX88179 are completely different. This driver had been verified on x86 system with AX88179/AX88178A and Sitcomm LN-032 USB dongles. Signed-off-by: Freddy Xin <freddy@asix.com.tw> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
