net: phy: Micrel KSZ8061: fix errata solution not taking effect problem KSZ8061 needs to write to a MMD register at driver initialization to fix an errata. This worked in 5.0 kernel but not in newer kernels. The issue is the main phylib code no longer resets PHY at the very beginning. Calling phy resuming code later will reset the chip if it is already powered down at the beginning. This wipes out the MMD register write. Solution is to implement a phy resume function for KSZ8061 to take care of this problem. It has been seen that once the system gets out of sleep mode, the interrupt status has the value 0x400 meaning that the PHY detected that the link was in low power. And there are 2 events (EVENT_A and EVENT_B) but these events are hardcoded to the GPIO 0 and GPIO 1. These events are used to generate period signals. It is possible to configure the length, the start time and the period of the signal by configuring the event. These events are generated by comparing the target time with the PHC time. In case the PHC time is changed to a value bigger than the target time + reload time, then it would generate only 1 event and then it would stop because target time + reload time is smaller than PHC time. Therefore it is required to change also the target time every time when the PHC is changed. The same will apply also when the PHC time is changed to a smaller value. After the 1-step is configured, then if 2-step is configured then the 1-step would be still configured because it is not clearing the flag. So the sync frames will still have origin timestamps set. net: phy: micrel: populate .soft_reset for KSZ9131 The RZ/G3S SMARC Module has 2 KSZ9131 PHYs. In this setup, the KSZ9131 PHY is used with the ravb Ethernet driver. It has been discovered that when bringing the Ethernet interface down/up continuously, e.g., with the following sh script: $ while :; do ifconfig eth0 down; ifconfig eth0 up; done the link speed and duplex are wrong after interrupting the bring down/up operation even though the Ethernet interface is up. To recover from this state the following configuration sequence is necessary (executed manually): $ ifconfig eth0 down $ ifconfig eth0 up The behavior has been identified also on the Microchip SAMA7G5-EK board which runs the macb driver and uses the same PHY. The order of PHY-related operations in ravb_open() is as follows: ravb_open() -> ravb_phy_start() -> ravb_phy_init() -> of_phy_connect() -> phy_connect_direct() -> phy_attach_direct() -> phy_init_hw() -> phydev->drv->soft_reset() phydev->drv->config_init() phydev->drv->config_intr() phy_resume() kszphy_resume() The order of PHY-related operations in ravb_close is as follows: ravb_close() -> phy_stop() -> phy_suspend() -> kszphy_suspend() -> genphy_suspend() // set BMCR_PDOWN bit in MII_BMCR In genphy_suspend() setting the BMCR_PDWN bit in MII_BMCR switches the PHY to Software Power-Down (SPD) mode (according to the KSZ9131 datasheet). Thus, when opening the interface after it has been previously closed (via ravb_close()), the phydev->drv->config_init() and phydev->drv->config_intr() reach the KSZ9131 PHY driver via the ksz9131_config_init() and kszphy_config_intr() functions. KSZ9131 specifies that the MII management interface remains operational during SPD (Software Power-Down), but (according to manual): - Only access to the standard registers (0 through 31) is supported. - Access to MMD address spaces other than MMD address space 1 is possible if the spd_clock_gate_override bit is set. - Access to MMD address space 1 is not possible. The spd_clock_gate_override bit is not used in the KSZ9131 driver. ksz9131_config_init() configures RGMII delay, pad skews and LEDs by accessesing MMD registers other than those in address space 1. The datasheet for the KSZ9131 does not specify what happens if registers from an unsupported address space are accessed while the PHY is in SPD. To fix the issue the .soft_reset method has been instantiated for KSZ9131, too. This resets the PHY to the default state before doing any configurations to it, thus switching it out of SPD. net: Change the API of PHY default timestamp to MAC Change the API to select MAC default time stamping instead of the PHY. Indeed the PHY is closer to the wire therefore theoretically it has less delay than the MAC timestamping but the reality is different. Due to lower time stamping clock frequency, latency in the MDIO bus and no PHC hardware synchronization between different PHY, the PHY PTP is often less precise than the MAC. The exception is for PHY designed specially for PTP case but these devices are not very widespread. For not breaking the compatibility I introduce a default_timestamp flag in phy_device that is set by the phy driver to know we are using the old API behavior. The phy_set_timestamp function is called at each call of phy_attach_direct. In case of MAC driver using phylink this function is called when the interface is turned up. Then if the interface goes down and up again the last choice of timestamp will be overwritten by the default choice. A solution could be to cache the timestamp status but it can bring other issues. In case of SFP, if we change the module, it doesn't make sense to blindly re-set the timestamp back to PHY, if the new module has a PHY with mediocre timestamping capabilities. Previously, link partners like "ASIX AX88772B" with KSZ8873 could fall back to 10Mbit instead of configured 100Mbit. The issue arises as KSZ886X PHY continues sending Fast Link Pulses (FLPs) even with autonegotiation off, misleading link partners in autoneg mode, leading to incorrect link speed detection. Now, when autonegotiation is disabled, the driver sets the link state forcefully using KSZ886X_CTRL_FORCE_LINK bit. Moreover, the in-register disablement of MMD_DEVICE_ID_EEE_ADV.MMD_EEE_ADV MMD register is removed, as this code is both; now executed too late (after previous rework of the PHY and DSA for KSZ switches) and not required as setting all members of eee_broken_modes bit field prevents the KSZ9477 from advertising EEE. net: micrel: Change to receive timestamp in the frame for lan8841 Currently for each timestamp frame, the SW needs to go and read the received timestamp over the MDIO bus. But the HW has the capability to store the received nanoseconds part and the least significant two bits of the seconds in the reserved field of the PTP header. In this way we could save few MDIO transactions (actually a little more transactions because the access to the PTP registers are indirect) for each received frame. Instead of reading the rest of seconds part of the timestamp of the frame using MDIO transactions schedule PTP worker thread to read the seconds part every 500ms and then for each of the received frames use this information. Because if for example running with 512 frames per second, there is no point to read 512 times the second part. Doing all these changes will give a great CPU usage performance. Running ptp4l with logSyncInterval of -9 will give a ~60% CPU improvement. net: phy: micrel: Move KSZ9477 errata fixes to PHY driver The ksz9477 DSA switch driver is currently updating some MMD registers on the internal port PHYs to address some chip errata. However, these errata are really a property of the PHY itself, not the switch they are part of, so this is kind of a layering violation. It makes more sense for these writes to be done inside the driver which binds to the PHY and not the driver for the containing device. This also addresses some issues where the ordering of when these writes are done may have been incorrect, causing the link to erratically fail to come up at the proper speed or at all. Doing this in the PHY driver during config_init ensures that they happen before anything else tries to change the state of the PHY on the port. The new code also ensures that autonegotiation is disabled during the register writes and re-enabled afterwards, as indicated by the latest version of the errata documentation from Microchip. It is possible to assigned the 2 events to any of the GPIOs, but a GPIO can have only 1 event at a time. These events are used to generate periodic signals. It is possible to configure the length, the start time and the period of the signal by configuring the event. Currently the SW uses only EVENT_A to generate the perout. These events are generated by comparing the target time with the PHC time. In case the PHC time is changed to a value bigger than the target time + reload time, then it would generate only 1 event and then it would stop because target time + reload time is small than PHC time. Therefore it is required to change also the target time every time when the PHC is changed. The same will apply also when the PHC time is changed to a smaller value. net: phy: micrel: correct KSZ9131RNX EEE capabilities and advertisement The KSZ9131RNX incorrectly shows EEE capabilities in its registers. This inconsistency causes PHYlib to assume there is no EEE support, preventing control over EEE advertisement, which is enabled by default. This patch resolves the issue by utilizing the ksz9477_get_features() function to correctly set the EEE capabilities for the KSZ9131RNX. net: phy: micrel: Change handler interrupt for lan8814 The lan8814 represents a package of 4 PHYs. All of them are sharing the same interrupt line. So when a link was going down/up or a frame was timestamped, then the interrupt handler of all the PHYs was called. Which is all fine and expected but the problem is the way the handler interrupt works. Basically if one of the PHYs timestamp a frame, then all the other 3 PHYs were polling the status of the interrupt until that PHY actually cleared the interrupt by reading the timestamp. The reason of polling was in case another PHY was also timestamping a frame at the same time, it could miss this interrupt. But this is not the right approach, because it is the interrupt controller who needs to call the interrupt handlers again if the interrupt line is still active. Therefore change this such when the interrupt handler is called check only if the interrupt is for itself, otherwise just exit. In this way save CPU usage. net: phy: micrel: use kszphy_suspend()/kszphy_resume for irq aware devices On a setup with KSZ9131 and MACB drivers it happens on suspend path, from time to time, that the PHY interrupt arrives after PHY and MACB were suspended (PHY via genphy_suspend(), MACB via macb_suspend()). In this case the phy_read() at the beginning of kszphy_handle_interrupt() will fail (as MACB driver is suspended at this time) leading to phy_error() being called and a stack trace being displayed on console. To solve this .suspend/.resume functions for all KSZ devices implementing .handle_interrupt were replaced with kszphy_suspend()/kszphy_resume() which disable/enable interrupt before/after calling genphy_suspend()/genphy_resume(). The fix has been adapted for all KSZ devices which implements .handle_interrupt but it has been tested only on KSZ9131. phy: micrel: ksz8041nl: do not use power down mode Some Micrel KSZ8041NL PHY chips exhibit continuous RX errors after using the power down mode bit (0.11). If the PHY is taken out of power down mode in a certain temperature range, the PHY enters a weird state which leads to continuously reporting RX errors. In that state, the MAC is not able to receive or send any Ethernet frames and the activity LED is constantly blinking. Since Linux is using the suspend callback when the interface is taken down, ending up in that state can easily happen during a normal startup. Micrel confirmed the issue in errata DS80000700A [*], caused by abnormal clock recovery when using power down mode. Even the latest revision (A4, Revision ID 0x1513) seems to suffer that problem, and according to the errata is not going to be fixed. Remove the suspend/resume callback to avoid using the power down mode completely. Some network card drivers will overwrite the port to twisted pair or fiber, though. Even worse, the MDI/MDIX setting is only used by ethtool if the port is twisted pair. Set the port to PORT_TP by default because most PHY drivers are copper ones. If there is fibre support and it is enabled, the PHY driver will set it to PORT_FIBRE. It supports transmission and reception of data on standard CAT-5, as well as CAT-5e and CAT-6, unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cables. LAN8814 supports industry-standard QSGMII (Quad Serial Gigabit Media Independent Interface) and Q-USGMII (Quad Universal Serial Gigabit Media Independent Interface) providing chip-to-chip connection to four Gigabit Ethernet MACs using a single serialized link (differential pair) in each direction. The LAN8814 SKU supports high-accuracy timestamping functions to support IEEE-1588 solutions using Microchip Ethernet switches, as well as customer solutions based on SoCs and FPGAs. The LAN8804 SKU has same features as that of LAN8814 SKU except that it does not support 1588, SyncE, or Q-USGMII with PCH/MCH. net: phy: micrel: add phy-mode support for the KSZ9031 PHY Add support for following phy-modes: rgmii, rgmii-id, rgmii-txid, rgmii-rxid. This PHY has an internal RX delay of 1.2ns and no delay for TX. The pad skew registers allow to set the total TX delay to max 1.38ns and the total RX delay to max of 2.58ns (configurable 1.38ns + build in 1.2ns) and a minimal delay of 0ns. According to the RGMII v1.3 specification the delay provided by PCB traces should be between 1.5ns and 2.0ns. The RGMII v2.0 allows to provide this delay by MAC or PHY. So, we configure this PHY to the best values we can get by this HW: TX delay to 1.38ns (max supported value) and RX delay to 1.80ns (best calculated delay) The phy-modes can still be fine tuned/overwritten by *-skew-ps device tree properties described in: Documentation/devicetree/bindings/net/micrel-ksz90x1.txt Signed-off-by: Oleksij Rempel <o.rempel@pengutronix.de> Reviewed-by: Philippe Schenker <philippe.schenker@toradex.com> Reviewed-by: Andrew Lunn <andrew@lunn.ch> Signed-off-by: David S. net: phy: micrel: kszphy_resume(): add delay after genphy_resume() before accessing PHY registers After the power-down bit is cleared, the chip internally triggers a global reset. According to the KSZ9031 documentation, we have to wait at least 1ms for the reset to finish. If the chip is accessed during reset, read will return 0xffff, while write will be ignored. Depending on the system performance and MDIO bus speed, we may or may not run in to this issue. This bug was discovered on an iMX6QP system with KSZ9031 PHY and attached PHY interrupt line. If IRQ was used, the link status update was lost. In polling mode, the link status update was always correct. The investigation showed, that during a read-modify-write access, the read returned 0xffff (while the chip was still in reset) and corresponding write hit the chip _after_ reset and triggered (due to the 0xffff) another reset in an undocumented bit (register 0x1f, bit 1), resulting in the next write being lost due to the new reset cycle. This patch fixes the issue by adding a 1...2 ms sleep after the genphy_resume(). net: phy: micrel: Discern KSZ8051 and KSZ8795 PHYs The KSZ8051 PHY and the KSZ8794/KSZ8795/KSZ8765 switch share exactly the same PHY ID. Since KSZ8051 is higher in the ksphy_driver[] list of PHYs in the micrel PHY driver, it is used even with the KSZ87xx switch. This is wrong, since the KSZ8051 configures registers of the PHY which are not present on the simplified KSZ87xx switch PHYs and misconfigures other registers of the KSZ87xx switch PHYs. Fortunatelly, it is possible to tell apart the KSZ8051 PHY from the KSZ87xx switch by checking the Basic Status register Bit 0, which is read-only and indicates presence of the Extended Capability Registers. The KSZ8051 PHY has those registers while the KSZ87xx switch does not. This patch implements simple check for the presence of this bit for both the KSZ8051 PHY and KSZ87xx switch, to let both use the correct PHY driver instance. net: phy: Micrel KSZ8061: link failure after cable connect With Micrel KSZ8061 PHY, the link may occasionally not come up after Ethernet cable connect. The vendor's (Microchip, former Micrel) errata sheet 80000688A.pdf descripes the problem and possible workarounds in detail, see below. The batch implements workaround 1, which permanently fixes the issue. DESCRIPTION Link-up may not occur properly when the Ethernet cable is initially connected. This issue occurs more commonly when the cable is connected slowly, but it may occur any time a cable is connected. This issue occurs in the auto-negotiation circuit, and will not occur if auto-negotiation is disabled (which requires that the two link partners be set to the same speed and duplex). END USER IMPLICATIONS When this issue occurs, link is not established. Subsequent cable plug/unplaug cycle will not correct the issue. WORk AROUND There are four approaches to work around this issue: 1. This issue can be prevented by setting bit 15 in MMD device address 1, register 2, prior to connecting the cable or prior to setting the Restart Auto-negotiation bit in register 0h. The MMD registers are accessed via the indirect access registers Dh and Eh, or via the Micrel EthUtil utility as shown here: . if using the EthUtil utility (usually with a Micrel KSZ8061 Evaluation Board), type the following commands: > address 1 > mmd 1 > iw 2 b61a . Alternatively, write the following registers to write to the indirect MMD register: Write register Dh, data 0001h Write register Eh, data 0002h Write register Dh, data 4001h Write register Eh, data B61Ah 2. The issue can be avoided by disabling auto-negotiation in the KSZ8061, either by the strapping option, or by clearing bit 12 in register 0h. Care must be taken to ensure that the KSZ8061 and the link partner will link with the same speed and duplex. Note that the KSZ8061 defaults to full-duplex when auto-negotiation is off, but other devices may default to half-duplex in the event of failed auto-negotiation. 3. The issue can be avoided by connecting the cable prior to powering-up or resetting the KSZ8061, and leaving it plugged in thereafter. 4. If the above measures are not taken and the problem occurs, link can be recovered by setting the Restart Auto-Negotiation bit in register 0h, or by resetting or power cycling the device. Reset may be either hardware reset or software reset (register 0h, bit 15). PLAN This errata will not be corrected in the future revision. net/phy: micrel: configure intterupts after autoneg workaround The commit ("net/phy: micrel: Add workaround for bad autoneg") fixes an autoneg failure case by resetting the hardware. This turns off intterupts. Things will work themselves out if the phy polls, as it will figure out it's state during a poll. However if the phy uses only intterupts, the phy will stall, since interrupts are off. This patch fixes the issue by calling config_intr after resetting the phy. net: phy: phy drivers should not set SUPPORTED_[Asym_]Pause Instead of having individual PHY drivers set the SUPPORTED_Pause and SUPPORTED_Asym_Pause flags, phylib itself should set those flags, unless there is a hardware erratum or other special case. During autonegotiation, the PHYs will determine whether to enable pause frame support. Pause frames are a feature that is supported by the MAC. It is the MAC that generates the frames and that processes them. The PHY can only be configured to allow them to pass through. This commit also effectively reverts the recently applied c7a61319 ("net: phy: dp83848: Support ethernet pause frames"). So the new process is: 1) Unless the PHY driver overrides it, phylib sets the SUPPORTED_Pause and SUPPORTED_AsymPause bits in phydev->supported. This indicates that the PHY supports pause frames. 2) The MAC driver checks phydev->supported before it calls phy_start(). If (SUPPORTED_Pause | SUPPORTED_AsymPause) is set, then the MAC driver sets those bits in phydev->advertising, if it wants to enable pause frame support. 3) When the link state changes, the MAC driver checks phydev->pause and phydev->asym_pause, If the bits are set, then it enables the corresponding features in the MAC. The algorithm is: if (phydev->pause) The MAC should be programmed to receive and honor pause frames it receives, i.e. enable receive flow control. if (phydev->pause != phydev->asym_pause) The MAC should be programmed to transmit pause frames when needed, i.e. enable transmit flow control. However, if a cable is plugged at boot, because auto negociation is already enabled at the time we get the first interrupt, the phy is already running. But the state machine then switches from PHY_UP to PHY_AN and calls phy_start_aneg(). phy_start_aneg() will not do anything because aneg is already enabled on the phy. It will then wait for a interrupt before going further. This interrupt will never happen unless the cable is unplugged and then replugged. It was working properly before 321beec5047a (net: phy: Use interrupts when available in NOLINK state) because switching to NOLINK meant starting polling the phy, even if IRQ were enabled. Center the FLP timing at 16ms to help avoid intermittent link failures. >From the KSZ9031RNX and KSZ9031MNX data sheets revision 2.2, section "Auto-Negotiation Timing": The KSZ9031[RNX or MNX] Fast Link Pulse (FLP) burst-to-burst transmit timing for Auto-Negotiation defaults to 8ms. IEEE 802.3 Standard specifies this timing to be 16ms +/-8ms. Some PHY link partners need to receive the FLP with 16ms centered timing; otherwise, there can be intermittent link failures and long link-up times. The PHY data sheet recommends configuring the FLP burst registers after power-up/reset and immediately thereafter restarting auto-negotiation, so we center the FLP timing at 16ms and then restart auto-negotiation in the config_init for KSZ9031. Add a new device-tree property "micrel,rmii-reference-clock-select-25-mhz" to describe this. Signed-off-by: Johan Hovold <johan@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

net: phy: micrel: add generic clock-mode-select support Add generic RMII-Reference-Clock-Select support. Several Micrel PHY have an RMII-Reference-Clock-Select bit to select 25 MHz or 50 MHz clock mode. Recently, support for configuring this through device tree for KSZ8021 and KSZ8031 was added. Generalise this support so that it can be configured for other PHY types as well. Note that some PHY revisions (of the same type) has this bit inverted. This should be either configurable through a new device-tree property, or preferably, determined based on PHY ID if possible. Also note that this removes support for setting 25 MHz mode from board files which was also added by the above mentioned commit 45f56cb82e45 ("net/phy: micrel: Add clock support for KSZ8021/KSZ8031"). phy/micrel: KSZ8031RNL RMII clock reconfiguration bug Bug: Unable to send and receive Ethernet packets with Micrel PHY. Affected devices: KSZ8031RNL (commercial temp) KSZ8031RNLI (industrial temp) Description: PHY device is correctly detected during probe. PHY power-up default is 25MHz crystal clock input and output 50MHz RMII clock to MAC. Reconfiguration of PHY to input 50MHz RMII clock from MAC causes PHY to become unresponsive if clock source is changed after Operation Mode Strap Override (OMSO) register setup. Cause: Long lead times on parts where clock setup match circuit design forces the usage of similar parts with wrong default setup. Solution: Swapped KSZ8031 register setup and added phy_write return code validation. Tested with Freescale i.MX28 Fast Ethernet Controler (fec).
