net: ena: Fix incorrect descriptor free behavior ENA has two types of TX queues: - queues which only process TX packets arriving from the network stack - queues which only process TX packets forwarded to it by XDP_REDIRECT or XDP_TX instructions The ena_free_tx_bufs() cycles through all descriptors in a TX queue and unmaps + frees every descriptor that hasn't been acknowledged yet by the device (uncompleted TX transactions). The function assumes that the processed TX queue is necessarily from the first category listed above and ends up using napi_consume_skb() for descriptors belonging to an XDP specific queue. This patch solves a bug in which, in case of a VF reset, the descriptors aren't freed correctly, leading to crashes. net: ena: Wrong missing IO completions check order Missing IO completions check is called every second (HZ jiffies). This commit fixes several issues with this check: 1. Duplicate queues check: Max of 4 queues are scanned on each check due to monitor budget. Once reaching the budget, this check exits under the assumption that the next check will continue to scan the remainder of the queues, but in practice, next check will first scan the last already scanned queue which is not necessary and may cause the full queue scan to last a couple of seconds longer. The fix is to start every check with the next queue to scan. For example, on 8 IO queues: Bug: [0,1,2,3], [3,4,5,6], [6,7] Fix: [0,1,2,3], [4,5,6,7] 2. Unbalanced queues check: In case the number of active IO queues is not a multiple of budget, there will be checks which don't utilize the full budget because the full scan exits when reaching the last queue id. The fix is to run every TX completion check with exact queue budget regardless of the queue id. For example, on 7 IO queues: Bug: [0,1,2,3], [4,5,6], [0,1,2,3] Fix: [0,1,2,3], [4,5,6,0], [1,2,3,4] The budget may be lowered in case the number of IO queues is less than the budget (4) to make sure there are no duplicate queues on the same check. net: ena: Change default print level for netif_ prints The netif_* functions are used by the driver to log events into the kernel ring (dmesg) similar to the netdev_* ones. Unlike the latter, the netif_* function family allow the user to choose what events get logged using ethtool: sudo ethtool -s [interface] msglvl [msg_type] on By default the events which get logged are slow-path related and aren't printed often (e.g. interface up related prints). This patch removes the NETIF_MSG_TX_DONE type (called every TX completion polling) from the defaults and adds NETIF_MSG_IFDOWN instead as it makes more sensible defaults. This patch also transforms ena_down() print from netif_info into netif_dbg (same as the analogue print in ena_up()) as it suits it better. net: ena: Add more information on TX timeouts The function responsible for polling TX completions might not receive the CPU resources it needs due to higher priority tasks running on the requested core. The driver might not be able to recognize such cases, but it can use its state to suspect that they happened. If both conditions are met: - napi hasn't been executed more than the TX completion timeout value - napi is scheduled (meaning that we've received an interrupt) Then it's more likely that the napi handler isn't scheduled because of an overloaded CPU. It was decided that for this case, the driver would wait twice as long as the regular timeout before scheduling a reset. The driver uses ENA_REGS_RESET_SUSPECTED_POLL_STARVATION reset reason to indicate this case to the device. This patch also adds more information to the ena_tx_timeout() callback. This function is called by the kernel when it detects that a specific TX queue has been closed for too long. net: ena: Remove CQ tail pointer update The functionality was added to allow the drivers to create an SQ and CQ of different sizes. When the RX/TX SQ and CQ have the same size, such update isn't necessary as the device can safely assume it doesn't override unprocessed completions. However, if the SQ is larger than the CQ, the device might "have" more completions it wants to update about than there's room in the CQ. There's no support for different SQ and CQ sizes, therefore, removing the API and its usage. '____cacheline_aligned' compiler attribute was added to 'struct ena_com_io_cq' to ensure that the removal of the 'cq_head_db_reg' field doesn't change the cache-line layout of this struct. Instead of generating an interrupt for every received packet, the system can dynamically adjust the rate at which interrupts are generated based on the incoming traffic patterns. Enabling DIM by default to improve the user experience. net: ena: Use tx_ring instead of xdp_ring for XDP channel TX When an XDP program is loaded the existing channels in the driver split into two halves: - The first half of the channels contain RX and TX rings, these queues are used for receiving traffic and sending packets originating from kernel. - The second half of the channels contain only a TX ring. These queues are used for sending packets that were redirected using XDP_TX or XDP_REDIRECT. Referring to the queues in the second half of the channels as "xdp_ring" can be confusing and may give the impression that ENA has the capability to generate an additional special queue. This patch ensures that the xdp_ring field is exclusively used to describe the XDP TX queue that a specific RX queue needs to utilize when forwarding packets with XDP TX and XDP REDIRECT, preserving the integrity of the xdp_ring field in ena_ring. net: ena: replace deprecated strncpy with strscpy `strncpy` is deprecated for use on NUL-terminated destination strings [1] and as such we should prefer more robust and less ambiguous string interfaces. A suitable replacement is `strscpy` [2] due to the fact that it guarantees NUL-termination on the destination buffer without unnecessarily NUL-padding. host_info allocation is done in ena_com_allocate_host_info() via dma_alloc_coherent() and is not zero initialized by alloc_etherdev_mq(). However zero initialization of the destination doesn't matter in this case, because strscpy() guarantees a NULL termination. net: ena: Fix DMA syncing in XDP path when SWIOTLB is on This patch fixes two issues: Issue 1 ------- Description ``````````` Current code does not call dma_sync_single_for_cpu() to sync data from the device side memory to the CPU side memory before the XDP code path uses the CPU side data. This causes the XDP code path to read the unset garbage data in the CPU side memory, resulting in incorrect handling of the packet by XDP. Solution ```````` 1. Add a call to dma_sync_single_for_cpu() before the XDP code starts to use the data in the CPU side memory. 2. The XDP code verdict can be XDP_PASS, in which case there is a fallback to the non-XDP code, which also calls dma_sync_single_for_cpu(). To avoid calling dma_sync_single_for_cpu() twice: 2.1. Put the dma_sync_single_for_cpu() in the code in such a place where it happens before XDP and non-XDP code. 2.2. Remove the calls to dma_sync_single_for_cpu() in the non-XDP code for the first buffer only (rx_copybreak and non-rx_copybreak cases), since the new call that was added covers these cases. The call to dma_sync_single_for_cpu() for the second buffer and on stays because only the first buffer is handled by the newly added dma_sync_single_for_cpu(). And there is no need for special handling of the second buffer and on for the XDP path since currently the driver supports only single buffer packets. Issue 2 ------- Description ``````````` In case the XDP code forwarded the packet (ENA_XDP_FORWARDED), ena_unmap_rx_buff_attrs() is called with attrs set to 0. This means that before unmapping the buffer, the internal function dma_unmap_page_attrs() will also call dma_sync_single_for_cpu() on the whole buffer (not only on the data part of it). This sync is both wasteful (since a sync was already explicitly called before) and also causes a bug, which will be explained using the below diagram. The following diagram shows the flow of events causing the bug. The order of events is (1)-(4) as shown in the diagram. This is an incorrect condition since the problem is not the size of the packet, rather the number of buffers it contains. This commit: 1. Identifies and drops XDP multi-buffer packets at the beginning of the function. 2. Increases the xdp drop statistic when this drop occurs. 3. Adds a one-time print that such drops are happening to give better indication to the user. net: ena: Add dynamic recycling mechanism for rx buffers The current implementation allocates page-sized rx buffers. As traffic may consist of different types and sizes of packets, in various cases, buffers are not fully used. This change (Dynamic RX Buffers - DRB) uses part of the allocated rx page needed for the incoming packet, and returns the rest of the unused page to be used again as an rx buffer for future packets. A threshold of 2K for unused space has been set in order to declare whether the remainder of the page can be reused again as an rx buffer. As a page may be reused, dma_sync_single_for_cpu() is added in order to sync the memory to the CPU side after it was owned by the HW. In addition, when the rx page can no longer be reused, it is being unmapped using dma_page_unmap(), which implicitly syncs and then unmaps the entire page. In case the kernel still handles the skbs pointing to the previous buffers from that rx page, it may access garbage pointers, caused by the implicit sync overwriting them. The implicit dma sync is removed by replacing dma_page_unmap() with dma_unmap_page_attrs() with DMA_ATTR_SKIP_CPU_SYNC flag. The functionality is disabled for XDP traffic to avoid handling several descriptors per packet. drivers: net: turn on XDP features A summary of the flags being set for various drivers is given below. Note that XDP_F_REDIRECT_TARGET and XDP_F_FRAG_TARGET are features that can be turned off and on at runtime. This means that these flags may be set and unset under RTNL lock protection by the driver. net: ena: Update NUMA TPH hint register upon NUMA node update The device supports a PCIe optimization hint, which indicates on which NUMA the queue is currently processed. This hint is utilized by PCIe in order to reduce its access time by accessing the correct NUMA resources and maintaining cache coherence. The driver calls the register update for the hint (called TPH - TLP Processing Hint) during the NAPI loop. Though the update is expected upon a NUMA change (when a queue is moved from one NUMA to the other), the current logic performs a register update when the queue is moved to a different CPU, but the CPU is not necessarily in a different NUMA. The changes include: 1. Performing the TPH update only when the queue has switched a NUMA node. 2. Moving the TPH update call to be triggered only when NAPI was scheduled from interrupt context, as opposed to a busy-polling loop. This is due to the fact that during busy-polling, the frequency of CPU switches for a particular queue is significantly higher, thus, the likelihood to switch NUMA is much higher. Therefore, providing the frequent updates to the device upon a NUMA update are unlikely to be beneficial. net: ena: Use bitmask to indicate packet redirection Redirecting packets with XDP Redirect is done in two phases: 1. A packet is passed by the driver to the kernel using xdp_do_redirect(). 2. After finishing polling for new packets the driver lets the kernel know that it can now process the redirected packet using xdp_do_flush_map(). The packets' redirection is handled in the napi context of the queue that called xdp_do_redirect() To avoid calling xdp_do_flush_map() each time the driver first checks whether any packets were redirected, using xdp_flags |= xdp_verdict; and if (xdp_flags & XDP_REDIRECT) xdp_do_flush_map() essentially treating XDP instructions as a bitmask, which isn't the case: enum xdp_action { XDP_ABORTED = 0, XDP_DROP, XDP_PASS, XDP_TX, XDP_REDIRECT, }; Given the current possible values of xdp_action, the current design doesn't have a bug (since XDP_REDIRECT = 100b), but it is still flawed. This patch makes the driver use a bitmask instead, to avoid future issues. net: ena: Change ENI stats support check to use capabilities field Use the capabilities field to query the device for ENI stats support. This replaces the previous method that tried to get the ENI stats during ena_probe() and used the success or failure as an indication for support by the device. Remove eni_stats_supported field from struct ena_adapter. This field was used for the previous method of queriying for ENI stats support. Change the severity level of the print in case of ena_com_get_eni_stats() failure from info to error. With the previous method of querying form ENI stats support, failure to get ENI stats was normal for devices that don't support it. With the use of the capabilities field such a failure is unexpected, as it is called only if the device reported that it supports ENI stats. net: ena: Fix error handling when calculating max IO queues number The role of ena_calc_max_io_queue_num() is to return the number of queues supported by the device, which means the return value should be >=0. The function that calls ena_calc_max_io_queue_num(), checks the return value. If it is 0, it means the device reported it supports 0 IO queues. This case is considered an error and is handled by the calling function accordingly. However the current implementation of ena_calc_max_io_queue_num() is wrong, since when it detects the device supports 0 IO queues, it returns -EFAULT. In such a case the calling function doesn't detect the error, and therefore doesn't handle it. This commit changes ena_calc_max_io_queue_num() to return 0 in case the device reported it supports 0 queues, allowing the calling function to properly handle the error case. net: ena: Fix undefined state when tx request id is out of bounds ena_com_tx_comp_req_id_get() checks the req_id of a received completion, and if it is out of bounds returns -EINVAL. This is a sign that something is wrong with the device and it needs to be reset. The current code does not reset the device in this case, which leaves the driver in an undefined state, where this completion is not properly handled. This commit adds a call to handle_invalid_req_id() in ena_clean_tx_irq() and ena_clean_xdp_irq() which resets the device to fix the issue. This commit also removes unnecessary request id checks from validate_tx_req_id() and validate_xdp_req_id(). This check is unneeded because it was already performed in ena_com_tx_comp_req_id_get(), which is called right before these functions. ena: Remove rcu_read_lock() around XDP program invocation The ena driver has rcu_read_lock()/rcu_read_unlock() pairs around XDP program invocations. However, the actual lifetime of the objects referred by the XDP program invocation is longer, all the way through to the call to xdp_do_flush(), making the scope of the rcu_read_lock() too small. This turns out to be harmless because it all happens in a single NAPI poll cycle (and thus under local_bh_disable()), but it makes the rcu_read_lock() misleading. Rather than extend the scope of the rcu_read_lock(), just get rid of it entirely. With the addition of RCU annotations to the XDP_REDIRECT map types that take bh execution into account, lockdep even understands this to be safe, so there's really no reason to keep it around. net: ena: optimize data access in fast-path code This tweaks several small places to improve the data access in fast path: * Remove duplicates of first_interrupt flag and surround it with WRITE/READ_ONCE macros: The flag is used to detect HW disorders in its interrupt communication with the driver. The flag is set when an interrupt is received and used in the health check function (ena_timer_service()) to help it find irregularities. * Reorder some fields in ena_napi struct to take better advantage of cache access pattern. * Move XDP TX queue number to a variable to save its calculation for every packet. * Use likely in a condition to improve branch prediction The 'first_interrupt' and 'interrupt_masked' flags were moved to reside in the same cache line as the first fields of 'napi' struct. This placement ensures that all memory accessed during upper-half handler reside in the same cacheline (napi_schedule_irqoff() only accesses 'state' and 'poll_list' fields which are at the beginning of napi struct). net: ena: fix DMA mapping function issues in XDP This patch fixes several bugs found when (DMA/LLQ) mapping a packet for transmission. The mapping procedure makes the transmitted packet accessible by the device. When using LLQ, this requires copying the packet's header to push header (which would be passed to LLQ) and creating DMA mapping for the payload (if the packet doesn't fit the maximum push length). When not using LLQ, we map the whole packet with DMA. The following bugs are fixed in the code: 1. Add support for non-LLQ machines: The ena_xdp_tx_map_frame() function assumed that LLQ is supported, and never mapped the whole packet using DMA. On some instances, which don't support LLQ, this causes loss of traffic. 2. Wrong DMA buffer length passed to device: When using LLQ, the first 'tx_max_header_size' bytes of the packet would be copied to push header. The rest of the packet would be copied to a DMA'd buffer. 3. Freeing the XDP buffer twice in case of a mapping error: In case a buffer DMA mapping fails, the function uses xdp_return_frame_rx_napi() to free the RX buffer and returns from the function with an error. XDP frames that fail to xmit get freed by the kernel and so there is no need for this call. net: ena: introduce XDP redirect implementation This patch adds a partial support for the XDP_REDIRECT directive which instructs the driver to pass the packet to an interface specified by the program. The directive is passed to the driver by calling bpf_redirect() or bpf_redirect_map() functions from the eBPF program. To lay the ground for integration with the existing XDP TX implementation the patch removes the redundant page ref count increase in ena_xdp_xmit_frame() and then decrease in ena_clean_rx_irq(). Instead it only DMA unmaps descriptors for which XDP TX or REDIRECT directive was received. The XDP Redirect support is still missing .ndo_xdp_xmit function implementation, which allows to redirect packet to an ENA interface, which would be added in a later patch. net: ena: add device distinct log prefix to files ENA logs are adjusted to display the full ENA representation to distinct each ENA device in case of multiple interfaces. Using netdev_err/warn and dev_info functions for logging provides uniform printing with clear distinction of the device and interface. This patch changes all printing in ena_com files to use netev_* logging functions except for messages of info level. Log functions of that level would be printed with dev_info because of the early stage they are called in when net_device struct isn't yet registered. To allow using netdev_* functions in all ena_com functions, a pointer to the net_device was added to ena_com_dev struct. The patch also adds some log messages to make driver debugging easier. net: ena: use constant value for net_device allocation The patch changes the maximum number of RX/TX queues it advertises to the kernel (via alloc_etherdev_mq()) from a value received from the device to a constant value which is the minimum between 128 and the number of CPUs in the system. By allocating the net_device struct with a constant number of queues, the driver is able to allocate it at a much earlier stage, before calling any ena_com functions. This would allow to make all log prints in ena_com to use netdev_* log functions instead or current pr_* ones. Note: netdev_* prints in ena_com functions that are called before net_device registration in ena_probe() might print messages that are a bit ugly (with strings like "(unnamed net_device) (uninitialized)"). However we decided to use netdev_* prints in these functions anyway, for the sake of getting better messages later, when ena_com functions are called after ena_probe() form other parts of the driver. net: ena: fix packet's addresses for rx_offset feature This patch fixes two lines in which the rx_offset received by the device wasn't taken into account: - prefetch function: In our driver the copied data would reside in rx_info->page + rx_headroom + rx_offset so the prefetch function is changed accordingly. - setting page_offset to zero for descriptors > 1: for every descriptor but the first, the rx_offset is zero. Hence the page_offset value should be set to rx_headroom. The previous implementation changed the value of rx_info after the descriptor was added to the SKB (essentially providing wrong page offset). net: ena: set initial DMA width to avoid intel iommu issue The ENA driver uses the readless mechanism, which uses DMA, to find out what the DMA mask is supposed to be. If DMA is used without setting the dma_mask first, it causes the Intel IOMMU driver to think that ENA is a 32-bit device and therefore disables IOMMU passthrough permanently. This patch sets the dma_mask to be ENA_MAX_PHYS_ADDR_SIZE_BITS=48 before readless initialization in ena_device_init()->ena_com_mmio_reg_read_request_init(), which is large enough to workaround the intel_iommu issue. DMA mask is set again to the correct value after it's received from the device after readless is initialized. The patch also changes the driver to use dma_set_mask_and_coherent() function instead of the two pci_set_dma_mask() and pci_set_consistent_dma_mask() ones. Both methods achieve the same effect. net: ena: Change WARN_ON expression in ena_del_napi_in_range() The ena_del_napi_in_range() function unregisters the napi handler for rings in a given range. This function had the following WARN_ON macro: WARN_ON(ENA_IS_XDP_INDEX(adapter, i) && adapter->ena_napi[i].xdp_ring); This macro prints the call stack if the expression inside of it is true [1], but the expression inside of it is the wanted situation. The expression checks whether the ring has an XDP queue and its index corresponds to a XDP one. This patch changes the expression to !ENA_IS_XDP_INDEX(adapter, i) && adapter->ena_napi[i].xdp_ring which indicates an unwanted situation. Also, change the structure of the function. The napi handler is unregistered for all rings, and so there's no need to check whether the index is an XDP index or not. By removing this check the code becomes much more readable. net: ena: Prevent reset after device destruction The reset work is scheduled by the timer routine whenever it detects that a device reset is required (e.g. when a keep_alive signal is missing). When releasing device resources in ena_destroy_device() the driver cancels the scheduling of the timer routine without destroying the reset work explicitly. This creates the following bug: The driver is suspended and the ena_suspend() function is called -> This function calls ena_destroy_device() to free the net device resources -> The driver waits for the timer routine to finish its execution and then cancels it, thus preventing from it to be called again. If, in its final execution, the timer routine schedules a reset, the reset routine might be called afterwards,and a redundant call to ena_restore_device() would be made. By changing the reset routine we allow it to read the device's state accurately. This is achieved by checking whether ENA_FLAG_TRIGGER_RESET flag is set before resetting the device and making both the destruction function and the flag check are under rtnl lock. The ENA_FLAG_TRIGGER_RESET is cleared at the end of the destruction routine. Also surround the flag check with 'likely' because we expect that the reset routine would be called only when ENA_FLAG_TRIGGER_RESET flag is set. The destruction of the timer and reset services in __ena_shutoff() have to stay, even though the timer routine is destroyed in ena_destroy_device(). This is to avoid a case in which the reset routine is scheduled after free_netdev() in __ena_shutoff(), which would create an access to freed memory in adapter->flags. net: ena: support new LLQ acceleration mode New devices add a new hardware acceleration engine, which adds some restrictions to the driver. Metadata descriptor must be present for each packet and the maximum burst size between two doorbells is now limited to a number advertised by the device. This patch adds: 1. A handshake protocol between the driver and the device, so the device will enable the accelerated queues only when both sides support it. 2. The driver support for the new acceleration engine: 2.1. Send metadata descriptor for each Tx packet. 2.2. Limit the number of packets sent between doorbells.(*) (*) A previous driver implementation of this feature was comitted in commit 05d62ca218f8 ("net: ena: add handling of llq max tx burst size") however the design of the interface between the driver and device changed since then. net: ena: move llq configuration from ena_probe to ena_device_init() When the ENA device resets to recover from some error state, all LLQ configuration values are reset to their defaults, because LLQ is initialized only once during ena_probe(). Changes in this commit: 1. Move the LLQ configuration process into ena_init_device() which is called from both ena_probe() and ena_restore_device(). This way, LLQ setup configurations that are different from the default values will survive resets. 2. Extract the LLQ bar mapping to ena_map_llq_bar(), and call once in the lifetime of the driver from ena_probe(), since there is no need to unmap and map the LLQ bar again every reset. 3. Map the LLQ bar if it exists, regardless if initialization of LLQ placement policy (ENA_ADMIN_PLACEMENT_POLICY_DEV) succeeded or not. Initialization might fail the first time, falling back to the ENA_ADMIN_PLACEMENT_POLICY_HOST placement policy, but later succeed after device reset, in which case the LLQ bar needs to be mapped already. This bit tells the device that the driver in question supports the retrieving and updating of RSS function and hash key, and therefore the device should allow RSS function and key manipulation. This commit turns on device support for hash key and RSS function management. Without this commit this feature is turned off at the device and appears to the user as unsupported. Traffic Mirroring needs access to the rx buffers in the instance. To have this access, this patch: 1. Changes the code to map and unmap the rx buffers bidirectionally. 2. Enables the relevant bit in driver_supported_features to indicate to the FW that this driver supports traffic mirroring. Rx completion is not generated until mirroring is done to avoid the situation where the driver changes the buffer before it is mirrored. net: ena: avoid unnecessary rearming of interrupt vector when busy-polling For an overview of the race created by this patch goto synchronization label. In napi busy-poll mode, the kernel invokes the napi handler of the device repeatedly to poll the NIC's receive queues. This process repeats until a timeout, specific for each connection, is up. By polling packets in busy-poll mode the user may gain lower latency and higher throughput (since the kernel no longer waits for interrupts to poll the queues) in expense of CPU usage. Upon completing a napi routine, the driver checks whether the routine was called by an interrupt handler. If so, the driver re-enables interrupts for the device. This is needed since an interrupt routine invocation disables future invocations until explicitly re-enabled. The driver avoids re-enabling the interrupts if they were not disabled in the first place (e.g. if driver in busy mode). Originally, the driver checked whether interrupt re-enabling is needed by reading the 'ena_napi->unmask_interrupt' variable. This atomic variable was set upon interrupt and cleared after re-enabling it. In the 4.10 Linux version, the 'napi_complete_done' call was changed so that it returns 'false' when device should not re-enable interrupts, and 'true' otherwise. The change includes reading the "NAPIF_STATE_IN_BUSY_POLL" flag to check if the napi call is in busy-poll mode, and if so, return 'false'. The driver was changed to re-enable interrupts according to this routine's return value. The Linux community rejected the use of the 'ena_napi->unmaunmask_interrupt' variable to determine whether unmasking is needed, and urged to use napi_napi_complete_done() return value solely. See https://lore.kernel.org/patchwork/patch/741149/ for more details As explained, a busy-poll session exists for a specified timeout value, after which it exits the busy-poll mode and re-enters it later. This leads to many invocations of the napi handler where napi_complete_done() false indicates that interrupts should be re-enabled. This creates a bug in which the interrupts are re-enabled unnecessarily. To reproduce this bug: 1) echo 50 | sudo tee /proc/sys/net/core/busy_poll 2) echo 50 | sudo tee /proc/sys/net/core/busy_read 3) Add counters that check whether 'ena_unmask_interrupt(tx_ring, rx_ring);' is called without disabling the interrupts in the first place (i.e. with calling the interrupt routine ena_intr_msix_io()) Steps 1+2 enable busy-poll as the default mode for new connections. The busy poll routine rearms the interrupts after every session by design, and so we need to add an extra check that the interrupts were masked in the first place. synchronization: This patch introduces a race between the interrupt handler ena_intr_msix_io() and the napi routine ena_io_poll(). Some macros and instruction were added to prevent this race from leaving the interrupts masked. The following specifies the different race scenarios in this patch: 1) interrupt handler and napi routine run sequentially i) interrupt handler is called, sets 'interrupts_masked' flag and successfully schedules the napi handler via softirq. In this scenario the napi routine might not see the flag change for several reasons: a) The flag is stored in a register by the compiler. For this case the WRITE_ONCE macro which prevents this. b) The compiler might reorder the instruction. For this the smp_wmb() instruction was used which implies a compiler memory barrier. c) On archs with weak consistency model (like ARM64) the napi routine might be scheduled and start running before the flag STORE instruction is committed to cache/memory. To ensure this doesn't happen, the smp_wmb() instruction was added. It ensures that the flag set instruction is committed before scheduling napi. ii) compiler reorders the flag's value check in the 'if' with the flag set in the napi routine. This scenario is prevented by smp_rmb() call after the flag check. 2) interrupt handler and napi routine run in parallel (can happen when busy poll routine invokes the napi handler) i) interrupt handler sets the flag in one core, while the napi routine reads it in another core. This scenario also is divided into two cases: a) napi_complete_done() doesn't finish running, in which case napi_sched() would just set NAPIF_STATE_MISSED and the napi routine would reschedule itself without changing the flag's value. b) napi_complete_done() finishes running. In this case the napi routine might override the flag's value. This doesn't present any rise since it later unmasks the interrupt vector. net: ena: Add PCI shutdown handler to allow safe kexec Currently ENA only provides the PCI remove() handler, used during rmmod for example. This is not called on shutdown/kexec path; we are potentially creating a failure scenario on kexec: (a) Kexec is triggered, no shutdown() / remove() handler is called for ENA; instead pci_device_shutdown() clears the master bit of the PCI device, stopping all DMA transactions; (b) Kexec reboot happens and the device gets enabled again, likely having its FW with that DMA transaction buffered; then it may trigger the (now invalid) memory operation in the new kernel, corrupting kernel memory area. This patch aims to prevent this, by implementing a shutdown() handler quite similar to the remove() one - the difference being the handling of the netdev, which is unregistered on remove(), but following the convention observed in other drivers, it's only detached on shutdown(). This prevents an odd issue in AWS Nitro instances, in which after the 2nd kexec the next one will fail with an initrd corruption, caused by a wild DMA write to invalid kernel memory. net: ena: fix continuous keep-alive resets last_keep_alive_jiffies is updated in probe and when a keep-alive event is received. In case the driver times-out on a keep-alive event, it has high chances of continuously timing-out on keep-alive events. This is because when the driver recovers from the keep-alive-timeout reset the value of last_keep_alive_jiffies is very old, and if a keep-alive event is not received before the next timer expires, the value of last_keep_alive_jiffies will cause another keep-alive-timeout reset and so forth in a loop. Solution: Update last_keep_alive_jiffies whenever the device is restored after reset. The driver should validate that the Rx req_id it received from the device is in range [0, ring_size -1]. Failure to do so could yield to potential memory access violoation. The validation was mistakenly done when refilling the Rx submission queue and not in Rx completion queue. net: ena: fix request of incorrect number of IRQ vectors Bug: In short the main issue is caused by the fact that the number of queues is changed using ethtool after ena_probe() has been called and before ena_up() was executed. Here is the full scenario in detail: * ena_probe() is called when the driver is loaded, the driver is not up yet at the end of ena_probe(). * The number of queues is changed -> io_queue_count is changed as well - ena_up() is not called since the "dev_was_up" boolean in ena_update_queue_count() is false. * ena_up() is called by the kernel (it's called asynchronously some time after ena_probe()). ena_setup_io_intr() is called by ena_up() and it uses io_queue_count to get the suitable irq lines for each msix vector. The function ena_request_io_irq() is called right after that and it uses msix_vecs - This value only changes during ena_probe() and ena_restore() - to request the irq vectors. This results in "Failed to request I/O IRQ" error for i > io_queue_count. Numeric example: * After ena_probe() io_queue_count = 8, msix_vecs = 9. * The number of queues changes to 4 -> io_queue_count = 4, msix_vecs = 9. * ena_up() is executed for the first time: ** ena_setup_io_intr() inits the vectors only up to io_queue_count. ** ena_request_io_irq() calls request_irq() and fails for i = 5. How to reproduce: simply run the following commands: sudo rmmod ena && sudo insmod ena.ko; sudo ethtool -L eth1 combined 3; Fix: Use ENA_MAX_MSIX_VEC(adapter->num_io_queues + adapter->xdp_num_queues) instead of adapter->msix_vecs. We need to take XDP queues into consideration as they need to have msix vectors assigned to them as well. Note that the XDP cannot be attached before the driver is up and running but in XDP mode the issue might occur when the number of queues changes right after a reset trigger. The ENA_MAX_MSIX_VEC simply adds one to the argument since the first msix vector is reserved for management queue. net: ena: fix incorrect setting of the number of msix vectors Overview: We don't frequently change the msix vectors throughout the life cycle of the driver. We do so in two functions: ena_probe() and ena_restore(). ena_probe() is only called when the driver is loaded. ena_restore() on the other hand is called during device reset / resume operations. We use num_io_queues for calculating and allocating the number of msix vectors. At ena_probe() this value is equal to max_num_io_queues and thus this is not an issue, however ena_restore() might be called after the number of io queues has changed. A possible bug scenario is as follows: * Change number of queues from 8 to 4. (num_io_queues = 4, max_num_io_queues = 8, msix_vecs = 9,) * Trigger reset occurs -> ena_restore is called. (num_io_queues = 4, max_num_io_queues =8 , msix_vecs = 5) * Change number of queues from 4 to 6. (num_io_queues = 6, max_num_io_queues = 8, msix_vecs = 5) * The driver will reset due to failure of check_for_rx_interrupt_queue() Fix: This can be easily fixed by always using max_num_io_queues to init the msix_vecs, since this number won't change as opposed to num_io_queues. net: ena: fix broken interface between ENA driver and FW In this commit we revert the part of commit 1a63443afd70 ("net/amazon: Ensure that driver version is aligned to the linux kernel"), which breaks the interface between the ENA driver and FW. We also replace the use of DRIVER_VERSION with DRIVER_GENERATION when we bring back the deleted constants that are used in interface with ENA device FW. This commit does not change the driver version reported to the user via ethtool, which remains the kernel version. net: ena: fix uses of round_jiffies() >From the documentation of round_jiffies(): "Rounds a time delta in the future (in jiffies) up or down to (approximately) full seconds. This is useful for timers for which the exact time they fire does not matter too much, as long as they fire approximately every X seconds. By rounding these timers to whole seconds, all such timers will fire at the same time, rather than at various times spread out. The goal of this is to have the CPU wake up less, which saves power." There are 2 parts to this patch: ================================ Part 1: ------- In our case we need timer_service to be called approximately every X=1 seconds, and the exact time does not matter, so using round_jiffies() is the right way to go. Therefore we add round_jiffies() to the mod_timer() in ena_timer_service(). Part 2: ------- round_jiffies() is used in check_for_missing_keep_alive() when getting the jiffies of the expiration of the keep_alive timeout. Here it is actually a mistake to use round_jiffies() because we want the exact time when keep_alive should expire and not an approximate rounded time, which can cause early, false positive, timeouts. Therefore we remove round_jiffies() in the calculation of keep_alive_expired() in check_for_missing_keep_alive(). net: ena: fix napi handler misbehavior when the napi budget is zero In netpoll the napi handler could be called with budget equal to zero. Current ENA napi handler doesn't take that into consideration. The napi handler handles Rx packets in a do-while loop. Currently, the budget check happens only after decrementing the budget, therefore the napi handler, in rare cases, could run over MAX_INT packets. Therefore when intr_delay_resolution changes, the code needs to first mutiply intr_moder_rx/tx_interval by the previous intr_delay_resolution to get the value originally given by the user, and only then divide it by the new intr_delay_resolution. The ena_clean_tx_irq() - which is a part of the napi handler - function might wake up the tx queue when the queue is supposed to be down (during recovery or changing the size of the queues for example) This causes the ena_start_xmit() function to trigger and possibly try to access the destroyed queues. net: ena: allow queue allocation backoff when low on memory If there is not enough memory to allocate io queues the driver will try to allocate smaller queues. The backoff algorithm is as follows: 1. Try to allocate TX and RX and if successful. 1.1. return success 2. Divide by 2 the size of the larger of RX and TX queues (or both if their size is the same). 3. If TX or RX is smaller than 256 3.1. return failure. 4. else 4.1. go back to 1. Also change the tx_queue_size, rx_queue_size field names in struct adapter to requested_tx_queue_size and requested_rx_queue_size, and use RX and TX queue 0 for actual queue sizes. Explanation: The original fields were useless as they were simply used to assign values once from them to each of the queues in the adapter in ena_probe(). They could simply be deleted. However now that we have a backoff feature, we have use for them. In case of backoff there is a difference between the requested queue sizes and the actual sizes. Therefore there is a need to save the requested queue size for future retries of queue allocation (for example if allocation failed and then ifdown + ifup was called we want to start the allocation from the original requested size of the queues). net: ena: replace free_tx/rx_ids union with single free_ids field in ena_ring struct ena_ring holds a union of free_rx_ids and free_tx_ids. Both of the above fields mean the exact same thing and are used exactly the same way. Furthermore, these fields are always used with a prefix of the type of ring. So for tx it will be tx_ring->free_tx_ids, and for rx it will be rx_ring->free_rx_ids, which shows how redundant the "_tx" and "_rx" parts are. Furthermore still, this may lead to confusing code like where tx_ring->free_rx_ids which works correctly but looks like a mess. This commit removes the aforementioned redundancy by replacing the free_rx/tx_ids union with a single free_ids field. It also changes a single goto label name from err_free_tx_ids: to err_tx_free_ids: for consistency with the above new notation. It is exposed by the device to the driver and the driver needs to comply with it to avoid bugs. In this commit we: 1. Add ena_com_is_doorbell_needed(), which calculates the number of llq entries that will be used to hold a packet, and will return true if they exceed the number of allowed entries in a burst. If the function returns true, a doorbell needs to be invoked to send this packet in the next burst. 2. net: ena: gcc 8: fix compilation warning GCC 8 contains a number of new warnings as well as enhancements to existing checkers. The warning - Wstringop-truncation - warns for calls to bounded string manipulation functions such as strncat, strncpy, and stpncpy that may either truncate the copied string or leave the destination unchanged. In our case the destination string length (32 bytes) is much shorter than the source string (64 bytes) which causes this warning to show up. In general the destination has to be at least a byte larger than the length of the source string with strncpy for this warning not to showup. This can be easily fixed by using strlcpy instead which already does the truncation to the string. net: ena: fix: set freed objects to NULL to avoid failing future allocations In some cases when a queue related allocation fails, successful past allocations are freed but the pointer that pointed to them is not set to NULL. This is a problem for 2 reasons: 1. This is generally a bad practice since this pointer might be accidentally accessed in the future. 2. Future allocations using the same pointer check if the pointer is NULL and fail if it is not. Fixed this by setting such pointers to NULL in the allocation of queue related objects. Also refactored the code of ena_setup_tx_resources() to goto-style error handling to avoid code duplication of resource freeing. net: move skb->xmit_more hint to softnet data There are two reasons for this. First, the xmit_more flag conceptually doesn't fit into the skb, as xmit_more is not a property related to the skb. Its only a hint to the driver that the stack is about to transmit another packet immediately. Second, it was only done this way to not have to pass another argument to ndo_start_xmit(). We can place xmit_more in the softnet data, next to the device recursion. The recursion counter is already written to on each transmit. The "more" indicator is placed right next to it. Drivers can use the netdev_xmit_more() helper instead of skb->xmit_more to check the "more packets coming" hint. skb->xmit_more is retained (but always 0) to not cause build breakage. This change takes care of the simple s/skb->xmit_more/netdev_xmit_more()/ conversions. Remaining drivers are converted in the next patches. net: remove 'fallback' argument from dev->ndo_select_queue() After the previous patch, all the callers of ndo_select_queue() provide as a 'fallback' argument netdev_pick_tx. The only exceptions are nested calls to ndo_select_queue(), which pass down the 'fallback' available in the current scope - still netdev_pick_tx. We can drop such argument and replace fallback() invocation with netdev_pick_tx(). This avoids an indirect call per xmit packet in some scenarios (TCP syn, UDP unconnected, XDP generic, pktgen) with device drivers implementing such ndo. It also clean the code a bit. net: ena: fix crash during ena_remove() In ena_remove() we have the following stack call: ena_remove() unregister_netdev() ena_destroy_device() netif_carrier_off() Calling netif_carrier_off() causes linkwatch to try to handle the link change event on the already unregistered netdev, which leads to a read from an unreadable memory address. This patch switches the order of the two functions, so that netif_carrier_off() is called on a regiestered netdev. To accomplish this fix we also had to: 1. Remove the set bit ENA_FLAG_TRIGGER_RESET 2. Add a sanitiy check in ena_close() both to prevent double device reset (when calling unregister_netdev() ena_close is called, but the device was already deleted in ena_destroy_device()). 3. net: ena: remove ndo_poll_controller As diagnosed by Song Liu, ndo_poll_controller() can be very dangerous on loaded hosts, since the cpu calling ndo_poll_controller() might steal all NAPI contexts (for all RX/TX queues of the NIC). This capture can last for unlimited amount of time, since one cpu is generally not able to drain all the queues under load. ena uses NAPI for TX completions, so we better let core networking stack call the napi->poll() to avoid the capture. net: ena: fix device destruction to gracefully free resources When ena_destroy_device() is called from ena_suspend(), the device is still reachable from the driver. Therefore, the driver can send a command to the device to free all resources. However, in all other cases of calling ena_destroy_device(), the device is potentially in an error state and unreachable from the driver. In these cases the driver must not send commands to the device. The current implementation does not request resource freeing from the device even when possible. We add the graceful parameter to ena_destroy_device() to enable resource freeing when possible, and use it in ena_suspend(). When PAGE_SIZE equals 64kB or more, the buffer length field becomes zero. To solve this issue, limit the ena Rx descriptor to use 16kB even when allocating 64kB kernel pages. net: ena: fix race condition between device reset and link up setup In rare cases, ena driver would reset and re-start the device, for example, in case of misbehaving application that causes transmit timeout The first step in the reset procedure is to stop the Tx traffic by calling ena_carrier_off(). After the driver have just started the device reset procedure, device happens to send an asynchronous notification (via AENQ) to the driver than there was a link change (to link-up state). This link change is mapped to a call to netif_carrier_on() which re-activates the Tx queues, violating the assumption of no tx traffic until device reset is completed, as the reset task might still be in the process of queues initialization, leading to an access to uninitialized memory. mm: remove __GFP_COLD As the page free path makes no distinction between cache hot and cold pages, there is no real useful ordering of pages in the free list that allocation requests can take advantage of. Juding from the users of __GFP_COLD, it is likely that a number of them are the result of copying other sites instead of actually measuring the impact. Remove the __GFP_COLD parameter which simplifies a number of paths in the page allocator. This is potentially controversial but bear in mind that the size of the per-cpu pagelists versus modern cache sizes means that the whole per-cpu list can often fit in the L3 cache. Hence, there is only a potential benefit for microbenchmarks that alloc/free pages in a tight loop. It's even worse when THP is taken into account which has little or no chance of getting a cache-hot page as the per-cpu list is bypassed and the zeroing of multiple pages will thrash the cache anyway. The truncate microbenchmarks are not shown as this patch affects the allocation path and not the free path. A page fault microbenchmark was tested but it showed no sigificant difference which is not surprising given that the __GFP_COLD branches are a miniscule percentage of the fault path. (with another msix vector for management). If pci_alloc_irq_vectors() fails, the driver aborts the probe and the ENA network device is never brought up. With this patch, the driver's logic will reduce the number of IO queues to the number of allocated msix vectors (minus one for management) instead of failing probe(). net: ena: add support for out of order rx buffers refill ENA driver post Rx buffers through the Rx submission queue for the ENA device to fill them with receive packets. Each Rx buffer is marked with req_id in the Rx descriptor. Newer ENA devices could consume the posted Rx buffer in out of order, and as result the corresponding Rx completion queue will have Rx completion descriptors with non contiguous req_id(s) In this change the driver holds two rings. The first ring (called free_rx_ids) is a mapping ring. It holds all the unused request ids. The values in this ring are from 0 to ring_size -1. When the driver wants to allocate a new Rx buffer it uses the head of free_rx_ids and uses it's value as the index for rx_buffer_info ring. The req_id is also written to the Rx descriptor Upon Rx completion, The driver took the req_id from the completion descriptor and uses it as index in rx_buffer_info. The req_id is then return to the free_rx_ids ring. This patch also adds statistics to inform when the driver receive out of range or unused req_id. net: ena: fix theoretical Rx hang on low memory systems For the rare case where the device runs out of free rx buffer descriptors (in case of pressure on kernel memory), and the napi handler continuously fail to refill new Rx descriptors until device rx queue totally runs out of all free rx buffers to post incoming packet, leading to a deadlock: * The device won't send interrupts since all the new Rx packets will be dropped. * The napi handler won't try to allocate new Rx descriptors since allocation is part of NAPI that's not being invoked any more The fix involves detecting this scenario and rescheduling NAPI (to refill buffers) by the keepalive/watchdog task. net/ena: fix potential access to freed memory during device reset If the ena driver detects that the device is not behave as expected, it tries to reset the device. The reset flow calls ena_down, which will frees all the resources the driver allocates and then it will reset the device. This flow can cause memory corruption if the device is still writes to the driver's memory space. To overcome this potential race, move the reset before the device resources are freed.
