mmc: core: Restore (almost) the busy polling for MMC_SEND_OP_COND Commit 76bfc7ccc2fa ("mmc: core: adjust polling interval for CMD1"), significantly decreased the polling period from ~10-12ms into just a couple of us. The purpose was to decrease the total time spent in the busy polling loop, but unfortunate it has lead to problems, that causes eMMC cards to never gets out busy and thus fails to be initialized. To fix the problem, but also to try to keep some of the new improved behaviour, let's start by using a polling period of 1-2ms, which then increases for each loop, according to common polling loop in __mmc_poll_for_busy(). mmc: core: adjust polling interval for CMD1 In mmc_send_op_cond(), loops are continuously performed at the same interval of 10 ms. However the behaviour is not good for some eMMC which can be out from a busy state earlier than 10 ms if normal. mmc: core: Add support for cache ctrl for SD cards In SD spec v6.x the SD function extension registers for performance enhancements were introduced. As a part of this an optional internal cache on the SD card, can be used to improve performance. The let the SD card use the cache, the host needs to enable it and manage flushing of the cache, so let's add support for this. Note that for an SD card supporting the cache it's mandatory for it, to also support the poweroff notification feature. According to the SD spec, if the cache has been enabled and a poweroff notification is sent to the card, that implicitly also means that the card should flush its internal cache. mmc: core: Update CMD13 busy check for CMD6 commands Through mmc_poll_for_busy() a CMD13 may be sent to get the status of the (e)MMC card. If the state of the card is R1_STATE_PRG, the card is considered as being busy, which means we continue to poll with CMD13. This seems to be sufficient, but it's also unnecessary fragile, as it means a new command/request could potentially be sent to the card when it's in an unknown state. To try to improve the situation, but also to move towards a more consistent CMD13 polling behaviour in the mmc core, let's deploy the same policy we use for regular I/O write requests. In other words, let's check that card returns to the R1_STATE_TRAN and that the R1_READY_FOR_DATA bit is set in the CMD13 response, before exiting the polling loop. Note that, potentially this changed behaviour could lead to unnecessary waiting for the timeout to expire, if the card for some reason, moves to an unexpected error state. However, as we bail out from the polling loop when R1_SWITCH_ERROR bit is set or when the CMD13 fails, this shouldn't be an issue. mmc: core: Throttle polling rate for CMD6 In mmc_poll_for_busy() we loop continuously, either by sending a CMD13 or by invoking the ->card_busy() host ops, as to detect when the card stops signaling busy. This behaviour is problematic as it may cause CPU hogging, especially when the busy signal time reaches beyond a few ms. Let's fix the issue by adding a throttling mechanism, that inserts a usleep_range() in between the polling attempts. The sleep range starts at 32-64us, but increases for each loop by a factor of 2, up until the range reaches ~32-64ms. In this way, we are able to keep the loop fine-grained enough for short busy signaling times, while also not hogging the CPU for longer times. Note that, this change is inspired by the similar throttling mechanism that we already use for mmc_do_erase(). Revert "mmc: core: do not retry CMD6 in __mmc_switch()" Turns out the commit 3a0681c7448b ("mmc: core: do not retry CMD6 in __mmc_switch()") breaks initialization of a Toshiba THGBMNG5 eMMC card, when using the meson-gx-mmc.c driver on a custom board based on Amlogic A113D. The CMD6 that switches the card into HS200 mode is then one that fails and according to the below printed messages from the log: [ 1.648951] mmc0: mmc_select_hs200 failed, error -84 [ 1.648988] mmc0: error -84 whilst initialising MMC card After some analyze, it turns out that adding a delay of ~5ms inside mmc_select_bus_width() but after mmc_compare_ext_csds() has been executed, also fixes the problem. Adding yet some more debug code, trying to figure out if potentially the card could be in a busy state, both by using CMD13 and ->card_busy() ops concluded that this was not the case. Therefore, let's simply revert the commit that dropped support for retrying of CMD6, as this also fixes the problem. But according to the spec, bit 17 and bit 18 should be ignored, as well bit 14 which is reserved(must be set to 0) quoting from the spec and these rule apply to all places checking the device status. So change its checking from 0xFFFFE000 to 0xFFF9A000. As a bonus, we reuse it for mmc_do_erase() as well as mmc_switch_status_error(). (1) Currently mmc_switch_status_error() doesn't check bit 25, but it means device is locked but not unlocked by CMD42 prior to any operations which need check busy, which is also not allowed. (2) mmc_do_erase() also forgot to to check bit 15, WP_ERASE_SKIP. The spec says "Only partial address space was erased due to existing write protected blocks.", which obviously means we should fail this I/O. Otherwise, the partial erased data stored in nonvalatile flash violates the data integrity from the view of I/O owner, which probably confuse it when further used. mmc: use empty initializer list to zero-clear structures In the MMC subsystem, we see such initializers that only clears the first member explicitly. For example, struct mmc_request mrq = {NULL}; sets the first member (.sbc) to NULL explicitly. However, this is an unstable form because we may insert a non-pointer member at the top of the struct mmc_request in the future. (if we do so, the compiler will spit warnings.) So, using a designated initializer is preferred coding style. The expression above is equivalent to: struct mmc_request mrq = { .sbc = NULL }; Of course, this does not express our intention. We want to fill all struct members with zeros. Please note struct members are implicitly zero-cleared unless otherwise specified in the initializer. After all, the most reasonable (and stable) form is: struct mmc_request mrq = {}; Do likewise for mmc_command, mmc_data as well. mmc: core: Restore parts of the polling policy when switch to HS/HS DDR Regressions for not being able to detect an eMMC HS DDR mode card has been reported for the sdhci-esdhc-imx driver, but potentially other sdhci variants may suffer from the similar problem. The commit e173f8911f09 ("mmc: core: Update CMD13 polling policy when switch to HS DDR mode"), is causing the problem. It seems that change moved one step to far, regarding changing the host's timing before polling for a busy card. To fix this, let's move back to the behaviour when the host's timing is updated after the polling, but before the switch status is fetched and validated. In cases when polling with CMD13, we keep validating the switch status at each attempt. However, to align with the other card busy detections mechanism, let's fetch and validate the switch status also after the host's timing is updated. mmc: mmc: Relax checking for switch errors after HS200 switch The JEDEC specification indicates CMD13 can be used after a HS200 switch to check for errors. However in practice some boards experience CRC errors in the CMD13 response. Consequently, for HS200, CRC errors are not a reliable way to know the switch failed. If there really is a problem, we would expect tuning will fail and the result ends up the same. So change the error condition to ignore CRC errors in that case. mmc: core: Enable __mmc_switch() to change bus speed timing for the host In cases when a speed mode change is requested for mmc cards, a CMD6 is sent by calling __mmc_switch() during the card initialization. The CMD6 leads to the card entering a busy period. When that is completed, the host must parse the CMD6 status to find out whether the change of the speed mode succeeded. To enable the mmc core to poll the card by using CMD13 to find out when the busy period is completed, it's reasonable to make sure polling is done by having the mmc host and the mmc card, being configured to operate at the same selected bus speed timing. Therefore, let's extend __mmc_switch() to take yet another parameter, which allow its callers to update the bus speed timing of the mmc host. In this way, __mmc_switch() also becomes capable of reading and validating the CMD6 status by sending a CMD13, in cases when that's desired. If __mmc_switch() encounters a failure, we make sure to restores the old bus speed timing for the mmc host, before propagating the error code. mmc: core: Check SWITCH_ERROR bit from each CMD13 response when polling According to the JEDEC specification, the SWITCH_ERROR bit in the device status from a R1 response, is an error bit which may be cleared as soon as the response that reports the error is sent. When polling with CMD13 to find out when the card stops signaling busy after a CMD6 has been sent, we currently parse only the last CMD13 response for the SWITCH_ERROR bit. Consequentially we could loose important information about the card. In worst case if the card stops signaling busy within the allowed timeout, we could end up believing that the CMD6 command completed successfully, when in fact it didn't. To improve the behaviour, let's parse each CMD13 response to see if the SWITCH_ERROR bit is set in the device status. In such case, we abort the polling loop and report the error. mmc: core: Retry instead of ignore at CRC errors when polling for busy After a CMD6 command has been sent, the __mmc_switch() function might be advised to poll the card for busy by using CMD13 and also by ignoring CRC errors. In the case of ignoring CRC errors, the mmc core tells the mmc host to also ignore these errors via masking the MMC_RSP_CRC response flag. This seems wrong, as it leads to that the mmc host could propagate an unreliable response, instead of a proper error code. What we really want, is not to ignore CRC errors but instead retry the polling attempt. So, let's change this by treating a CRC error as the card is still being busy and thus continue to run the polling loop. mmc: core: Fixup busy detection for mmc switch operations If the host controller supports busy detection in HW, we expect the MMC_CAP_WAIT_WHILE_BUSY to be set. Likewise the corresponding host->max_busy_timeout should reflect the maximum busy detection timeout supported by the host. Previously we expected a host that supported MMC_CAP_WAIT_WHILE_BUSY to cope with any timeout, which just isn't feasible due to HW limitations. For most switch operations, R1B responses are expected and thus we need to check for busy detection completion. To cope with cases where the requested busy detection timeout is greater than what the host are able to support, we fallback to use a R1 response instead. This will prevent the host from doing HW busy detection. In those cases, busy detection completion is handled by polling the for the card's status using CMD13. This is the same mechanism used when the host doesn't support MMC_CAP_WAIT_WHILE_BUSY. Do note, a host->max_busy_timeout set to zero, is interpreted by the mmc core as it don't know what the host supports. It will then provide the host with whatever timeout the mmc core finds suitable. For some cases the mmc core has unfurtunate no clue of what timeout to use. In these cases we provide the host with a timeout value of zero, which the host may interpret as use whatever timeout it finds suitable. Read/write operations should be requested during BKOPS(LEVEL-1), then issue HPI to interrupt the ongoing BKOPS and service the foreground operation. (This patch only controls the LEVEL2/3.) When repeating the writing 1GB data, at a certain time, performance is decreased. At that time, card triggers the Level-3 or Level-2. After running bkops, performance is recovered. Future considerations: * Check BKOPS_LEVEL=1 and start BKOPS in a preventive manner. * Interrupt ongoing BKOPS before powering off the card. * How do we get BKOPS_STATUS value (periodically send ext_csd command)? * If using periodic bkops, also consider runtime_pm control. mmc: core: Remove bounce buffer in mmc_send_cxd_data() It is expected that Extended CSD register (the size of this register is larger than CID/CSD) will be referenced more frequently as more fields have been added to Extended CSD and it seems that it is not a good option to double the memory used. This patch is intended to avoid the use of bounce buffer for reading Extended CSD register in mmc_send_cxd_data(). It will provide a better performance gain by removing memcpy() overhead for a half KiB and a redundant bounce buffer allocated repeatedly at the cost of providing DMA-capable buffer from upper caller (but on-stack buffer is allowed with no performance gain). mmc: core: Fix the HPI execution sequence mmc_execute_hpi should send the HPI command only once, and only if the card is in PRG state. According to eMMC spec, the command's completion time is not dependent on OUT_OF_INTERRUPT_TIME. Only the transition out of PRG STATE is guarded by OUT_OF_INTERRUPT_TIME - which is defined to begin at the end of sending the command itself. Specify the default timeout for the actual sending of HPI command, and then use OUT_OF_INTERRUPT_TIME to wait for the transition out of PRG state. include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. MMC core learns about SPI Teach the MMC/SD/SDIO core about using SPI mode. - Use mmc_host_is_spi() so enumeration works through SPI signaling and protocols, not just the native versions. - Provide the SPI response type flags with each request issued, including requests from the new lock/unlock code. - Understand that cmd->resp[0] and mmc_get_status() results for SPI return different values than for "native" MMC/SD protocol; this affects resetting, checking card lock status, and some others. - Understand that some commands act a bit differently ... notably: * OP_COND command doesn't return the OCR * APP_CMD status doesn't have an R1_APP_CMD analogue Those changes required some new and updated primitives: - Provide utilities to access two SPI-only requests, and one request that wasn't previously needed: * mmc_spi_read_ocr() ... SPI only * mmc_spi_set_crc() ... SPI only (override by module parm) * mmc_send_cid() ... for use without broadcast mode - Updated internal routines: * Previous mmc_send_csd() modified into mmc_send_cxd_native(); it uses native "R2" responses, which include 16 bytes of data. * Previous mmc_send_ext_csd() becomes new mmc_send_cxd_data() helper for command-and-data access * Bugfix to that mmc_send_cxd_data() code: dma-to-stack is unsafe/nonportable, so kmalloc a bounce buffer instead. - Modified mmc_send_ext_csd() now uses mmc_send_cxd_data() helper - Modified mmc_send_csd(), and new mmc_spi_send_cid(), routines use those helper routines based on whether they're native or SPI The newest categories of cards supported by the MMC stack aren't expected to work yet with SPI: MMC or SD cards with over 4GB data, and SDIO. All those cards support SPI mode, so eventually they should work too. Signed-off-by: David Brownell <dbrownell@users.sourceforge.net> Signed-off-by: Pierre Ossman <drzeus@drzeus.cx>
