Drivers: hv: vmbus: Don't free ring buffers that couldn't be re-encrypted In CoCo VMs it is possible for the untrusted host to cause set_memory_encrypted() or set_memory_decrypted() to fail such that an error is returned and the resulting memory is shared. Callers need to take care to handle these errors to avoid returning decrypted (shared) memory to the page allocator, which could lead to functional or security issues. The VMBus ring buffer code could free decrypted/shared pages if set_memory_decrypted() fails. Check the decrypted field in the struct vmbus_gpadl for the ring buffers to decide whether to free the memory. Drivers: hv: vmbus: Remove duplication and cleanup code in create_gpadl_header() create_gpadl_header() creates a message header, and one or more message bodies if the number of GPADL entries exceeds what fits in the header. Currently the code for creating the message header is duplicated in the two halves of the main "if" statement governing whether message bodies are created. Eliminate the duplication by making minor tweaks to the logic and associated comments. While here, simplify the handling of memory allocation errors, and use umin() instead of open coding it. For ease of review, the indentation of sizable chunks of code is *not* changed. A follow-on patch updates only the indentation. No functional change. Drivers: hv: vmbus: Fix handling of messages with transaction ID of zero vmbus_request_addr() returns 0 (zero) if the transaction ID passed to as argument is 0. This is unfortunate for two reasons: first, netvsc_send_completion() does not check for a NULL cmd_rqst (before dereferencing the corresponding NVSP message); second, 0 is a *valid* value of cmd_rqst in netvsc_send_tx_complete(), cf. the call of vmbus_sendpacket() in netvsc_send_pkt(). vmbus_request_addr() has included the code in question since its introduction with commit e8b7db38449ac ("Drivers: hv: vmbus: Add vmbus_requestor data structure for VMBus hardening"); such code was motivated by the early use of vmbus_requestor by hv_storvsc. Since hv_storvsc moved to a tag-based mechanism to generate and retrieve transaction IDs with commit bf5fd8cae3c8f ("scsi: storvsc: Use blk_mq_unique_tag() to generate requestIDs"), vmbus_request_addr() can be modified to return VMBUS_RQST_ERROR if the ID is 0. This change solves the issues in hv_netvsc (and makes the handling of messages with transaction ID of 0 consistent with the semantics "the ID is not contained in the requestor/invalid ID"). vmbus_next_request_id(), vmbus_request_addr() should still reserve the ID of 0 for Hyper-V, because Hyper-V will "ignore" (not respond to) VMBUS_DATA_PACKET_FLAG_COMPLETION_REQUESTED packets/requests with transaction ID of 0 from the guest. Drivers: hv: vmbus: Initialize memory to be sent to the host __vmbus_open() and vmbus_teardown_gpadl() do not inizialite the memory for the vmbus_channel_open_channel and the vmbus_channel_gpadl_teardown objects they allocate respectively. These objects contain padding bytes and fields that are left uninitialized and that are later sent to the host, potentially leaking guest data. Zero initialize such fields to avoid leaking sensitive information to the host. Drivers: hv: vmbus: Add vmbus_requestor data structure for VMBus hardening Currently, VMbus drivers use pointers into guest memory as request IDs for interactions with Hyper-V. To be more robust in the face of errors or malicious behavior from a compromised Hyper-V, avoid exposing guest memory addresses to Hyper-V. Also avoid Hyper-V giving back a bad request ID that is then treated as the address of a guest data structure with no validation. Instead, encapsulate these memory addresses and provide small integers as request IDs. Drivers: hv: vmbus: Introduce types of GPADL This patch introduces two types of GPADL: HV_GPADL_{BUFFER, RING}. The types of GPADL are purely the concept in the guest, IOW the hypervisor treat them as the same. The reason of introducing the types for GPADL is to support guests whose page size is not 4k (the page size of Hyper-V hypervisor). In these guests, both the headers and the data parts of the ringbuffers need to be aligned to the PAGE_SIZE, because 1) some of the ringbuffers will be mapped into userspace and 2) we use "double mapping" mechanism to support fast wrap-around, and "double mapping" relies on ringbuffers being page-aligned. However, the Hyper-V hypervisor only uses 4k (HV_HYP_PAGE_SIZE) headers. Our solution to this is that we always make the headers of ringbuffers take one guest page and when GPADL is established between the guest and hypervisor, the only first 4k of header is used. To handle this special case, we need the types of GPADL to differ different guest memory usage for GPADL. Type enum is introduced along with several general interfaces to describe the differences between normal buffer GPADL and ringbuffer GPADL. Drivers: hv: vmbus: Introduce the CHANNELMSG_MODIFYCHANNEL message type VMBus version 4.1 and later support the CHANNELMSG_MODIFYCHANNEL(22) message type which can be used to request Hyper-V to change the vCPU that a channel will interrupt. Introduce the CHANNELMSG_MODIFYCHANNEL message type, and define the vmbus_send_modifychannel() function to send CHANNELMSG_MODIFYCHANNEL requests to the host via a hypercall. The function is then used to define a sysfs "store" operation, which allows to change the (v)CPU the channel will interrupt by using the sysfs interface. The feature can be used for load balancing or other purposes. One interesting catch here is that Hyper-V can *not* currently ACK CHANNELMSG_MODIFYCHANNEL messages with the promise that (after the ACK is sent) the channel won't send any more interrupts to the "old" CPU. The peculiarity of the CHANNELMSG_MODIFYCHANNEL messages is problematic if the user want to take a CPU offline, since we don't want to take a CPU offline (and, potentially, "lose" channel interrupts on such CPU) if the host is still processing a CHANNELMSG_MODIFYCHANNEL message associated to that CPU. It is worth mentioning, however, that we have been unable to observe the above mentioned "race": in all our tests, CHANNELMSG_MODIFYCHANNEL requests appeared *as if* they were processed synchronously by the host. Drivers: hv: vmbus: Use a spin lock for synchronizing channel scheduling vs. channel removal Since vmbus_chan_sched() dereferences the ring buffer pointer, we have to make sure that the ring buffer data structures don't get freed while such dereferencing is happening. Current code does this by sending an IPI to the CPU that is allowed to access that ring buffer from interrupt level, cf., vmbus_reset_channel_cb(). But with the new functionality to allow changing the CPU that a channel will interrupt, we can't be sure what CPU will be running the vmbus_chan_sched() function for a particular channel, so the current IPI mechanism is infeasible. Instead synchronize vmbus_chan_sched() and vmbus_reset_channel_cb() by using the (newly introduced) per-channel spin lock "sched_lock". Move the test for onchannel_callback being NULL before the "switch" control statement in vmbus_chan_sched(), in order to not access the ring buffer if the vmbus_reset_channel_cb() has been completed on the channel. hv_netvsc: Disable NAPI before closing the VMBus channel vmbus_chan_sched() might call the netvsc driver callback function that ends up scheduling NAPI work. This "work" can access the channel ring buffer, so we must ensure that any such work is completed and that the ring buffer is no longer being accessed before freeing the ring buffer data structure in the channel closure path. vmbus: fix subchannel removal The changes to split ring allocation from open/close, broke the cleanup of subchannels. This resulted in problems using uio on network devices because the subchannel was left behind when the network device was unbound. The cause was in the disconnect logic which used list splice to move the subchannel list into a local variable. This won't work because the subchannel list is needed later during the process of the rescind messages (relid2channel). The fix is to just leave the subchannel list in place which is what the original code did. The list is cleaned up later when the host rescind is processed. Drivers: hv: vmbus: check the creation_status in vmbus_establish_gpadl() This is a longstanding issue: if the vmbus upper-layer drivers try to consume too many GPADLs, the host may return with an error 0xC0000044 (STATUS_QUOTA_EXCEEDED), but currently we forget to check the creation_status, and hence we can pass an invalid GPADL handle into the OPEN_CHANNEL message, and get an error code 0xc0000225 in open_info->response.open_result.status, and finally we hang in vmbus_open() -> "goto error_free_info" -> vmbus_teardown_gpadl(). Drivers: hv: vmbus: Reset the channel callback in vmbus_onoffer_rescind() Before setting channel->rescind in vmbus_rescind_cleanup(), we should make sure the channel callback won't run any more, otherwise a high-level driver like pci_hyperv, which may be infinitely waiting for the host VSP's response and notices the channel has been rescinded, can't safely give up: e.g., in hv_pci_protocol_negotiation() -> wait_for_response(), it's unsafe to exit from wait_for_response() and proceed with the on-stack variable "comp_pkt" popped. The issue was originally spotted by Michael Kelley <mikelley@microsoft.com>. In vmbus_close_internal(), the patch also minimizes the range protected by disabling/enabling channel->callback_event: we don't really need that for the whole function. vmbus: re-enable channel tasklet This problem shows up in 4.11 when netvsc driver is removed and reloaded. The problem is that the channel is closed during module removal and the tasklet for processing responses is disabled. When module is reloaded the channel is reopened but the tasklet is marked as disabled. The fix is to re-enable tasklet at the end of close which gets it back to the initial state. The issue is less urgent in 4.12 since network driver now uses NAPI and not the tasklet; and other VMBUS devices are rarely unloaded/reloaded. vmbus: remove hv_event_tasklet_disable/enable With the recent introduction of per-channel tasklet, we need to update the way we handle the 3 concurrency issues: 1. hv_process_channel_removal -> percpu_channel_deq vs. vmbus_chan_sched -> list_for_each_entry(..., percpu_list); 2. vmbus_process_offer -> percpu_channel_enq/deq vs. vmbus_chan_sched. 3. vmbus_close_internal vs. the per-channel tasklet vmbus_on_event; The first 2 issues can be handled by Stephen's recent patch "vmbus: use rcu for per-cpu channel list", and the third issue can be handled by calling tasklet_disable in vmbus_close_internal here. We don't need the original hv_event_tasklet_disable/enable since we now use per-channel tasklet instead of the previous per-CPU tasklet, and actually we must remove them due to the side effect now: vmbus_process_offer -> hv_event_tasklet_enable -> tasklet_schedule will start the per-channel callback prematurely, cauing NULL dereferencing (the channel may haven't been properly configured to run the callback yet). Drivers: hv: vmbus: Raise retry/wait limits in vmbus_post_msg() DoS protection conditions were altered in WS2016 and now it's easy to get -EAGAIN returned from vmbus_post_msg() (e.g. when we try changing MTU on a netvsc device in a loop). All vmbus_post_msg() callers don't retry the operation and we usually end up with a non-functional device or crash. While host's DoS protection conditions are unknown to me my tests show that it can take up to 10 seconds before the message is sent so doing udelay() is not an option, we really need to sleep. Almost all vmbus_post_msg() callers are ready to sleep but there is one special case: vmbus_initiate_unload() which can be called from interrupt/NMI context and we can't sleep there. I'm also not sure about the lonely vmbus_send_tl_connect_request() which has no in-tree users but its external users are most likely waiting for the host to reply so sleeping there is also appropriate. Drivers: hv: vmbus: Base host signaling strictly on the ring state One of the factors that can result in the host concluding that a given guest in mounting a DOS attack is if the guest generates interrupts to the host when the host is not expecting it. If these "spurious" interrupts reach a certain rate, the host can throttle the guest to minimize the impact. The host computation of the "expected number of interrupts" is strictly based on the ring transitions. Until the host logic is fixed, base the guest logic to interrupt solely on the ring state. Drivers: hv: vmbus: Implement a mechanism to tag the channel for low latency On Hyper-V, performance critical channels use the monitor mechanism to signal the host when the guest posts mesages for the host. This mechanism minimizes the hypervisor intercepts and also makes the host more efficient in that each time the host is woken up, it processes a batch of messages as opposed to just one. Drivers: hv: vmbus: fix the race when querying & updating the percpu list There is a rare race when we remove an entry from the global list hv_context.percpu_list[cpu] in hv_process_channel_removal() -> percpu_channel_deq() -> list_del(): at this time, if vmbus_on_event() -> process_chn_event() -> pcpu_relid2channel() is trying to query the list, we can get the kernel fault. Similarly, we also have the issue in the code path: vmbus_process_offer() -> percpu_channel_enq(). We can resolve the issue by disabling the tasklet when updating the list. The patch also moves vmbus_release_relid() to a later place where the channel has been removed from the per-cpu and the global lists. Drivers: hv: get rid of timeout in vmbus_open() vmbus_teardown_gpadl() can result in infinite wait when it is called on 5 second timeout in vmbus_open(). The issue is caused by the fact that gpadl teardown operation won't ever succeed for an opened channel and the timeout isn't always enough. Consider the case when the client wants to explicitly control when to signal the host. Drivers: hv: vmbus: fix rescind-offer handling for device without a driver In the path vmbus_onoffer_rescind() -> vmbus_device_unregister() -> device_unregister() -> ... -> __device_release_driver(), we can see for a device without a driver loaded: dev->driver is NULL, so dev->bus->remove(dev), namely vmbus_remove(), isn't invoked. As a result, vmbus_remove() -> hv_process_channel_removal() isn't invoked and some cleanups(like sending a CHANNELMSG_RELID_RELEASED message to the host) aren't done. We can demo the issue this way: 1. rmmod hv_utils; 2. disable the Heartbeat Integration Service in Hyper-V Manager and lsvmbus shows the device disappears. 3. re-enable the Heartbeat in Hyper-V Manager and modprobe hv_utils, but lsvmbus shows the device can't appear again. This is because, the host thinks the VM hasn't released the relid, so can't re-offer the device to the VM. We can fix the issue by moving hv_process_channel_removal() from vmbus_close_internal() to vmbus_device_release(), since the latter is always invoked on device_unregister(), whether or not the dev has a driver loaded. Drivers: hv: vmbus: Implement multi-channel support Starting with Win8, the host supports multiple sub-channels for a given device. As in the past, the initial channel offer specifies the device and is associated with both the type and the instance GUIDs. For performance critical devices, the host may support multiple sub-channels. The sub-channels share the same type and instance GUID as the primary channel. The number of sub-channels offerrred to the guest depends on the number of virtual CPUs assigned to the guest. The guest can request the creation of these sub-channels and once created and opened, the guest can distribute the traffic across all the channels (the primary and the sub-channels). A request sent on a sub-channel will have the response delivered on the same sub-channel. At channel (sub-channel) creation we bind the channel interrupt to a CPU and with this sub-channel support we will be able to spread the interrupt load of a given device across all available CPUs.
