floppy: use a statically allocated error counter Interrupt handler bad_flp_intr() may cause a UAF on the recently freed request just to increment the error count. There's no point keeping that one in the request anyway, and since the interrupt handler uses a static pointer to the error which cannot be kept in sync with the pending request, better make it use a static error counter that's reset for each new request. This reset now happens when entering redo_fd_request() for a new request via set_next_request(). One initial concern about a single error counter was that errors on one floppy drive could be reported on another one, but this problem is not real given that the driver uses a single drive at a time, as that PC-compatible controllers also have this limitation by using shared signals. As such the error count is always for the "current" drive. floppy: disable FDRAWCMD by default Minh Yuan reported a concurrency use-after-free issue in the floppy code between raw_cmd_ioctl and seek_interrupt. [ It turns out this has been around, and that others have reported the KASAN splats over the years, but Minh Yuan had a reproducer for it and so gets primary credit for reporting it for this fix - Linus ] The problem is, this driver tends to break very easily and nowadays, nobody is expected to use FDRAWCMD anyway since it was used to manipulate non-standard formats. The risk of breaking the driver is higher than the risk presented by this race, and accessing the device requires privileges anyway. Let's just add a config option to completely disable this ioctl and leave it disabled by default. Distros shouldn't use it, and only those running on antique hardware might need to enable it. floppy: Fix hang in watchdog when disk is ejected When the watchdog detects a disk change, it calls cancel_activity(), which in turn tries to cancel the fd_timer delayed work. In the above scenario, fd_timer_fn is set to fd_watchdog(), meaning it is trying to cancel its own work. This results in a hang as cancel_delayed_work_sync() is waiting for the watchdog (itself) to return, which never happens. This can be reproduced relatively consistently by attempting to read a broken floppy, and ejecting it while IO is being attempted and retried. To resolve this, this patch calls cancel_delayed_work() instead, which cancels the work without waiting for the watchdog to return and finish. Before this regression was introduced, the code in this section used del_timer(), and not del_timer_sync() to delete the watchdog timer. floppy: fix calling platform_device_unregister() on invalid drives platform_device_unregister() should only be called when a respective platform_device_register() is called. However the floppy driver currently allows failures when registring a drive and a bail out could easily cause an invalid call to platform_device_unregister() where it was not intended. Fix this by adding a bool to keep track of when the platform device was registered for a drive. This does not fix any known panic / bug. This issue was found through code inspection while preparing the driver to use the up and coming support for device_add_disk() error handling. From what I can tell from code inspection, chances of this ever happening should be insanely small, perhaps OOM. floppy: fix add_disk() assumption on exit due to new developments After the patch titled "floppy: use blk_mq_alloc_disk and blk_cleanup_disk" the floppy driver was modified to allocate the blk_mq_alloc_disk() which allocates the disk with the queue. This is further clarified later with the patch titled "block: remove alloc_disk and alloc_disk_node". This clarifies that: Most drivers should use and have been converted to use blk_alloc_disk and blk_mq_alloc_disk. Only the scsi ULPs and dasd still allocate a disk separately from the request_queue so don't bother with convenience macros for something that should not see significant new users and remove these wrappers. And then we have the patch titled, "block: hold a request_queue reference for the lifetime of struct gendisk" which ensures that a queue is *always* present for sure during the entire lifetime of a disk. In the floppy driver's case then the disk always comes with the queue. So even if even if the queue was cleaned up on exit, putting the disk *is* still required, and likewise, blk_cleanup_queue() on a null queue should not happen now as disk->queue is valid from disk allocation time on. Automatic backport code scrapers should hopefully not cherry pick this patch as a stable fix candidate without full due dilligence to ensure all the work done on the block layer to make this happen is merged first. Revert "floppy: reintroduce O_NDELAY fix" The patch breaks userspace implementations (e.g. fdutils) and introduces regressions in behaviour. Previously, it was possible to O_NDELAY open a floppy device with no media inserted or with write protected media without an error. Some userspace tools use this particular behavior for probing. It's not the first time when we revert this patch. Previous revert is in commit f2791e7eadf4 (Revert "floppy: refactor open() flags handling"). floppy: reintroduce O_NDELAY fix This issue was originally fixed in 09954bad4 ("floppy: refactor open() flags handling"). The fix as a side-effect, however, introduce issue for open(O_ACCMODE) that is being used for ioctl-only open. I wrote a fix for that, but instead of it being merged, full revert of 09954bad4 was performed, re-introducing the O_NDELAY / O_NONBLOCK issue, and it strikes again. This is a forward-port of the original fix to current codebase; the original submission had the changelog below: ==== Commit 09954bad4 ("floppy: refactor open() flags handling"), as a side-effect, causes open(/dev/fdX, O_ACCMODE) to fail. It turns out that this is being used setfdprm userspace for ioctl-only open(). floppy: use a separate gendisk for each media format The floppy driver usually autodetects the media when used with the normal /dev/fd? devices, which also are the only nodes created by udev. But it also supports various aliases that force a given media format. That is currently supported using the blk_register_region framework which finds the floppy gendisk even for a 'mismatched' dev_t. The problem with this (besides the code complexity) is that it creates multiple struct block_device instances for the whole device of a single gendisk, which can lead to interesting issues in code not aware of that fact. To fix this just create a separate gendisk for each of the aliases if they are accessed. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <axboe@kernel.dk>

block/floppy: fix contended case in floppy_queue_rq() Since the switch of floppy driver to blk-mq, the contended (fdc_busy) case in floppy_queue_rq() is not handled correctly. In case we reach floppy_queue_rq() with fdc_busy set (i.e. with the floppy locked due to another request still being in-flight), we put the request on the list of requests and return BLK_STS_OK to the block core, without actually scheduling delayed work / doing further processing of the request. This means that processing of this request is postponed until another request comes and passess uncontended. Which in some cases might actually never happen and we keep waiting indefinitely. The simple testcase is for i in `seq 1 2000`; do echo -en $i '\r'; blkid --info /dev/fd0 2> /dev/null; done run in quemu. That reliably causes blkid eventually indefinitely hanging in __floppy_read_block_0() waiting for completion, as the BIO callback never happens, and no further IO is ever submitted on the (non-existent) floppy device. This was observed reliably on qemu-emulated device. Fix that by not queuing the request in the contended case, and return BLK_STS_RESOURCE instead, so that blk core handles the request rescheduling and let it pass properly non-contended later. floppy: cleanup: make set_fdc() always set current_drive and current_fd When called with a negative drive value, set_fdc() would stick to the current fdc (which was assumed to reflect the current_drive's FDC). floppy: cleanup: do not iterate on current_fdc in do_floppy_init() There's no need to iterate on current_fdc in do_floppy_init() anymore, in the first case it's only used as an array index to access fdc_state[], so let's get rid of this confusing assignment. The second case is a bit trickier because user_reset_fdc() needs to already know current_fdc when called with drive==-1 due to this call chain: user_reset_fdc() lock_fdc() set_fdc() drive<0 ==> new_fdc = current_fdc Note that current_drive is not used in this code part and may even not match a unit belonging to current_fdc. Instead of passing -1 we can simply pass the first drive of the FDC being initialized, which is even cleaner as it will allow the function chain above to consistently assign both variables. floppy: split the base port from the register in I/O accesses Currently we have architecture-specific fd_inb() and fd_outb() functions or macros, taking just a port which is in fact made of a base address and a register. The base address is FDC-specific and derived from the local or global "fdc" variable through the FD_IOPORT macro used in the base address calculation. This change splits this by explicitly passing the FDC's base address and the register separately to fd_outb() and fd_inb(). It affects the following archs: - x86, alpha, mips, powerpc, parisc, arm, m68k: simple remap of port -> base+reg - sparc32: use of reg only, since the base address was already masked out and the FDC controller is known from a static struct. - sparc64: like x86 for PCI, like sparc32 for 82077 Some archs use inline functions and others macros. This was not unified in order to minimize the number of changes to review. For the same reason checkpatch still spews a few warnings about things that were already there before. The parisc still uses hard-coded register values and could be cleaned up by taking the register definitions. The sparc per-controller inb/outb functions could further be refined to explicitly take an FDC register instead of a port in argument but it was not needed yet and may be cleaned later. floppy: rename the global "fdc" variable to "current_fdc" This is done in order to remove the confusion that arises at some places in the code where local variables or arguments shadow the global variable. It is already visible that some places are a bit awkward and iterate over the global variable, for the sole reason that they used to rely on it being named "fdc" in order to get the correct address when using FD_DOR. These ones are easy to spot by searching for "for (current_fdc...". Some more cleanup is definitely possible. For example "fdc_state[current_fdc].somefield" is used all over the code and would probably be better with "fdc_state->somefield" with fdc_state being set when current_fdc is assigned. This would require to pass the pointer to the current state instead of the current_fdc to the I/O functions. floppy: separate the FDC's base address from its registers FDC registers FD_STATUS, FD_DATA, FD_DOR, FD_DIR and FD_DCR used to be defined relative to FD_IOPORT, which is the FDC's base address, itself a macro depending on the "fdc" local or global variable. This patch changes this so that the register macros above now only reference the address offset, and that the FDC's address is explicitly passed in each call to fd_inb() and fd_outb(), thus removing the macro. With this change there is no more implicit usage of the local/global "fdc" variable. One place in the ARM code used to check if the port was equal to FD_DOR, this was changed to testing the register by applying a mask to the port, as was already done in the sparc code. There are still occurrences of fd_inb() and fd_outb() in the PARISC code and these ones remain unaffected since they already used to work with a base address and a register offset. The sparc, m68k and parisc code could now be slightly cleaned up to benefit from the macro definitions above instead of the equivalent hard-coded values. floppy: check FDC index for errors before assigning it Jordy Zomer reported a KASAN out-of-bounds read in the floppy driver in wait_til_ready(). Which on the face of it can't happen, since as Willy Tarreau points out, the function does no particular memory access. Except through the FDCS macro, which just indexes a static allocation through teh current fdc, which is always checked against N_FDC. Except the checking happens after we've already assigned the value. The floppy driver is a disgrace (a lot of it going back to my original horrd "design"), and has no real maintainer. Nobody has the hardware, and nobody really cares. But it still gets used in virtual environment because it's one of those things that everybody supports. The whole thing should be re-written, or at least parts of it should be seriously cleaned up. The 'current fdc' index, which is used by the FDCS macro, and which is often shadowed by a local 'fdc' variable, is a prime example of how not to write code. But because nobody has the hardware or the motivation, let's just fix up the immediate problem with a nasty band-aid: test the fdc index before actually assigning it to the static 'fdc' variable. compat_ioctl: block: handle cdrom compat ioctl in non-cdrom drivers Various block drivers implement the CDROMMULTISESSION, CDROM_GET_CAPABILITY, and CDROMEJECT ioctl commands, relying on the block layer to handle compat_ioctl mode for them. Move this into the drivers directly as a preparation for simplifying the block layer later. When only integer arguments or no arguments are passed, the same handler can be used for .ioctl and .compat_ioctl, and when only pointer arguments are passed, the newly added blkdev_compat_ptr_ioctl can be used. floppy: fix out-of-bounds read in copy_buffer This fixes a global out-of-bounds read access in the copy_buffer function of the floppy driver. The FDDEFPRM ioctl allows one to set the geometry of a disk. The sect and head fields (unsigned int) of the floppy_drive structure are used to compute the max_sector (int) in the make_raw_rw_request function. It is possible to overflow the max_sector. Next, max_sector is passed to the copy_buffer function and used in one of the memcpy calls. An unprivileged user could trigger the bug if the device is accessible, but requires a floppy disk to be inserted. The patch adds the check for the .sect * .head multiplication for not overflowing in the set_geometry function. The bug was found by syzkaller. floppy: fix invalid pointer dereference in drive_name This fixes the invalid pointer dereference in the drive_name function of the floppy driver. The native_format field of the struct floppy_drive_params is used as floppy_type array index in the drive_name function. Thus, the field should be checked the same way as the autodetect field. To trigger the bug, one could use a value out of range and set the drive parameters with the FDSETDRVPRM ioctl. Next, FDGETDRVTYP ioctl should be used to call the drive_name. A floppy disk is not required to be inserted. CAP_SYS_ADMIN is required to call FDSETDRVPRM. The patch adds the check for a value of the native_format field to be in the '0 <= x < ARRAY_SIZE(floppy_type)' range of the floppy_type array indices. The bug was found by syzkaller. floppy: fix div-by-zero in setup_format_params This fixes a divide by zero error in the setup_format_params function of the floppy driver. Two consecutive ioctls can trigger the bug: The first one should set the drive geometry with such .sect and .rate values for the F_SECT_PER_TRACK to become zero. Next, the floppy format operation should be called. A floppy disk is not required to be inserted. An unprivileged user could trigger the bug if the device is accessible. The patch checks F_SECT_PER_TRACK for a non-zero value in the set_geometry function. The proper check should involve a reasonable upper limit for the .sect and .rate fields, but it could change the UAPI. floppy: fix harmless clang build warning clang warns about unusual code in floppy.c that looks like it was intended to be a bit mask operation, checking for a specific bit in the UDP->cmos variable (FLOPPY1_TYPE expands to '4' on ARM): drivers/block/floppy.c:3902:17: error: use of logical '&&' with constant operand [-Werror,-Wconstant-logical-operand] if (!UDP->cmos && FLOPPY1_TYPE) ^ ~~~~~~~~~~~~ drivers/block/floppy.c:3902:17: note: use '&' for a bitwise operation if (!UDP->cmos && FLOPPY1_TYPE) The check here is redundant anyway, if FLOPPY1_TYPE is zero, then assigning it to a zero UDP->cmos field does not change anything, so removing the extra check here has no effect other than shutting up the warning. On x86, this will no longer read a hardware register, as the FLOPPY1_TYPE macro is not expanded if UDP->cmos is already zero, but the result is the same. Instead of leaving disk->events completely empty, we now export the supported events again, and tell the block layer not to forward events to user space by not setting DISK_EVENT_FLAG_UEVENT. This allows the block layer to distinguish between devices that for which events should be handled in kernel only, and devices which don't support any meda change events at all. floppy: Do not copy a kernel pointer to user memory in FDGETPRM ioctl The final field of a floppy_struct is the field "name", which is a pointer to a string in kernel memory. The kernel pointer should not be copied to user memory. The FDGETPRM ioctl copies a floppy_struct to user memory, including this "name" field. This pointer cannot be used by the user and it will leak a kernel address to user-space, which will reveal the location of kernel code and data and undermine KASLR protection. Model this code after the compat ioctl which copies the returned data to a previously cleared temporary structure on the stack (excluding the name pointer) and copy out to userspace from there. As we already have an inparam union with an appropriate member and that memory is already cleared even for read only calls make use of that as a temporary store. block: replace bi_bdev with a gendisk pointer and partitions index This way we don't need a block_device structure to submit I/O. The block_device has different life time rules from the gendisk and request_queue and is usually only available when the block device node is open. Other callers need to explicitly create one (e.g. the lightnvm passthrough code, or the new nvme multipathing code). For the actual I/O path all that we need is the gendisk, which exists once per block device. But given that the block layer also does partition remapping we additionally need a partition index, which is used for said remapping in generic_make_request. Note that all the block drivers generally want request_queue or sometimes the gendisk, so this removes a layer of indirection all over the stack. block: introduce new block status code type Currently we use nornal Linux errno values in the block layer, and while we accept any error a few have overloaded magic meanings. This patch instead introduces a new blk_status_t value that holds block layer specific status codes and explicitly explains their meaning. Helpers to convert from and to the previous special meanings are provided for now, but I suspect we want to get rid of them in the long run - those drivers that have a errno input (e.g. networking) usually get errnos that don't know about the special block layer overloads, and similarly returning them to userspace will usually return somethings that strictly speaking isn't correct for file system operations, but that's left as an exercise for later. For now the set of errors is a very limited set that closely corresponds to the previous overloaded errno values, but there is some low hanging fruite to improve it. blk_status_t (ab)uses the sparse __bitwise annotations to allow for sparse typechecking, so that we can easily catch places passing the wrong values. The little caveat here is that previously cmd_type only applied to struct request, while the request and bio op fields were set to plain REQ_OP_READ/WRITE even for passthrough operations. Instead this patch adds new REQ_OP_* for SCSI passthrough and driver private requests, althought it has to add two for each so that we can communicate the data in/out nature of the request. floppy: refactor open() flags handling In case /dev/fdX is open with O_NDELAY / O_NONBLOCK, floppy_open() immediately succeeds, without performing any further media / controller preparations. That's "correct" wrt. the NODELAY flag, but is hardly correct wrt. the rest of the floppy driver, that is not really O_NONBLOCK ready, at all. Therefore it's not too surprising, that subsequent attempts to work with the filedescriptor produce bad results. Namely, syzkaller tool has been able to livelock mmap() on the returned fd to keep waiting on the page unlock bit forever. Quite frankly, I have trouble defining what non-blocking behavior would be for floppies. Is waiting ages for the driver to actually succeed reading a sector blocking operation? Is waiting for drive motor to start blocking operation? How about in case of virtualized floppies? One option would be returning EWOULDBLOCK in case O_NDLEAY / O_NONBLOCK is being passed to open(). That has a theoretical potential of breaking some arcane and archaic userspace though. Let's take a more conservative aproach, and accept the O_NDLEAY flag, and let the driver behave as usual. While at it, clean up a bit handling of !(mode & (FMODE_READ|FMODE_WRITE)) case and return EINVAL instead of succeeding as well. Spotted by syzkaller tool. floppy: fix lock_fdc() signal handling floppy_revalidate() doesn't perform any error handling on lock_fdc() result. lock_fdc() might actually be interrupted by a signal (it waits for fdc becoming non-busy interruptibly). In such case, floppy_revalidate() proceeds as if it had claimed the lock, but it fact it doesn't. In case of multiple threads trying to open("/dev/fdX"), this leads to serious corruptions all over the place, because all of a sudden there is no critical section protection (that'd otherwise be guaranteed by locked fd) whatsoever. While at this, fix the fact that the 'interruptible' parameter to lock_fdc() doesn't make any sense whatsoever, because we always wait interruptibly anyway. Most of the lock_fdc() callsites do properly handle error (and propagate EINTR), but floppy_revalidate() and floppy_check_events() don't. Fix this. Spotted by 'syzkaller' tool. block: add a bi_error field to struct bio Currently we have two different ways to signal an I/O error on a BIO: (1) by clearing the BIO_UPTODATE flag (2) by returning a Linux errno value to the bi_end_io callback The first one has the drawback of only communicating a single possible error (-EIO), and the second one has the drawback of not beeing persistent when bios are queued up, and are not passed along from child to parent bio in the ever more popular chaining scenario. Having both mechanisms available has the additional drawback of utterly confusing driver authors and introducing bugs where various I/O submitters only deal with one of them, and the others have to add boilerplate code to deal with both kinds of error returns. So add a new bi_error field to store an errno value directly in struct bio and remove the existing mechanisms to clean all this up. floppy: do not corrupt bio.bi_flags when reading block 0 Commit 41a55b4de39 ("floppy: silence warning during disk test") caused bio.bi_flags being overwritten, and its initialization to BIO_UPTODATE in bio_init() to be lost. This was unnoticed until 7b7b68bba5 ("floppy: bail out in open() if drive is not responding to block0 read"), because the error value wasn't checked for in the bio completion callback. Now we are actually looking at the error, and the loss of BIO_UPTODATE causes EIO to be wrongly passed to the callback, which confuses the FD_OPEN_SHOULD_FAIL_BIT logic. Fix this by not destroying previous value of bi_flags when setting BIO_QUIET. Besides the leak, other side effect in the current code is if blk_init_queue fails, we would end up calling unregister_blkdev even if we didn't call yet register_blkdev. floppy: cancel any pending fd_timeouts before adding a new one In commit 070ad7e793dc ("floppy: convert to delayed work and single-thread wq") the 'fd_timeout' timer was converted to a delayed work. However, the "del_timer(&fd_timeout)" was lost in the process, and any previous pending timeouts would stay active when we then re-queued the timeout. This resulted in the floppy probe sequence having a (stale) 20s timeout rather than the intended 3s timeout, and thus made booting with the floppy driver (but no actual floppy controller) take much longer than it should. Of course, there's little reason for most people to compile the floppy driver into the kernel at all, which is why most people never noticed. Canceling the delayed work where we used to do the del_timer() fixes the issue, and makes the floppy probing use the proper new timeout instead. The three second timeout is still very wasteful, but better than the 20s one. floppy: remove floppy-specific O_EXCL handling Block layer now handles O_EXCL in a generic way for block devices. The semantics is however different for floppy and all other block devices, as floppy driver contains its own O_EXCL handling. The semantics for all-but-floppy bdevs is "there can be at most one O_EXCL open of this file", while for floppy bdev the semantics is "if someone has the bdev open with O_EXCL, noone else can open it". There is actual userspace-observable change in behavior because of this since commit e525fd89d380c ("block: make blkdev_get/put() handle exclusive access") -- on kernels containing this commit, mount of /dev/fd0 causes the fd0 block device be claimed with _EXCL, preventing subsequent open(/dev/fd0). Bring things back into shape, i.e. make it possible, analogically to other block devices, to mount the floppy and open() it afterwards -- remove the floppy-specific handling and let the generic bdev code O_EXCL handling take over. floppy: convert to delayed work and single-thread wq There are several races in floppy driver between bottom half (scheduled_work) and timers (fd_timeout, fd_timer). Due to slowness of the actual floppy devices, those races are never (at least to my knowledge) triggered on a bare floppy metal. However on virtualized (emulated) floppy drives, which are of course magnitudes faster than the real ones, these races trigger reliably. They usually exhibit themselves as NULL pointer dereferences during DMA setup, such as BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000000a [ ... snip ... ] EIP: 0060:[<c02053d5>] EFLAGS: 00010293 CPU: 0 EAX: ffffe000 EBX: 0000000a ECX: 00000000 EDX: 0000000a ESI: c05d2718 EDI: 00000000 EBP: 00000000 ESP: f540fe44 DS: 007b ES: 007b FS: 00d8 GS: 0000 SS: 0068 Process swapper (pid: 0, ti=f540e000 task=c082d5a0 task.ti=c0826000) Stack: ffffe000 00001ffc 00000000 00000000 00000000 c05d2718 c0708b40 f540fe80 c020470f c05d2718 c0708b40 00000000 f540fe80 0000000a f540fee4 00000000 c0708b40 f540fee4 00000000 00000000 c020526b 00000000 c05d2718 c0708b40 Call Trace: [<c020470f>] dump_trace+0xaf/0x110 [<c020526b>] show_trace_log_lvl+0x4b/0x60 [<c0205298>] show_trace+0x18/0x20 [<c05c5811>] dump_stack+0x6d/0x72 [<c0248527>] warn_slowpath_common+0x77/0xb0 [<c02485f3>] warn_slowpath_fmt+0x33/0x40 [<f7ec593c>] setup_DMA+0x14c/0x210 [floppy] [<f7ecaa95>] setup_rw_floppy+0x105/0x190 [floppy] [<c0256d08>] run_timer_softirq+0x168/0x2a0 [<c024e762>] __do_softirq+0xc2/0x1c0 [<c02042ed>] do_softirq+0x7d/0xb0 [<f54d8a00>] 0xf54d89ff but other instances can be easily seen as well. This can be observed at least under VMWare, VirtualBox and KVM. This patch converts all the timers and bottom halfs to be processed in a single workqueue. This aproach has been already discussed back in 2010 if I remember correctly, and Acked by Linus [1], but it then never made it to the tree. This all is based on original idea and code of Stephen Hemminger. I have ported original Stepen's code to the current state of the floppy driver, and performed quite some testing (on real hardware), which didn't reveal any issues (this includes not only writing and reading data, but also formatting (unfortunately I didn't find any Double-Density disks any more)). Ability to handle errors properly (supplying known bad floppies) has also been verified. x86: Remove the ancient and deprecated disable_hlt() and enable_hlt() facility The X86_32-only disable_hlt/enable_hlt mechanism was used by the 32-bit floppy driver. Its effect was to replace the use of the HLT instruction inside default_idle() with cpu_relax() - essentially it turned off the use of HLT. This workaround was commented in the code as: "disable hlt during certain critical i/o operations" "This halt magic was a workaround for ancient floppy DMA wreckage. It should be safe to remove." H. Peter Anvin additionally adds: "To the best of my knowledge, no-hlt only existed because of flaky power distributions on 386/486 systems which were sold to run DOS. Since DOS did no power management of any kind, including HLT, the power draw was fairly uniform; when exposed to the much hhigher noise levels you got when Linux used HLT caused some of these systems to fail. They were by far in the minority even back then." Alan Cox further says: "Also for the Cyrix 5510 which tended to go castors up if a HLT occurred during a DMA cycle and on a few other boxes HLT during DMA tended to go astray. Do we care ? I doubt it. The 5510 was pretty obscure, the 5520 fixed it, the 5530 is probably the oldest still in any kind of use." So, let's finally drop this. Fix over-zealous flush_disk when changing device size. There are two cases when we call flush_disk. In one, the device has disappeared (check_disk_change) so any data will hold becomes irrelevant. In the oter, the device has changed size (check_disk_size_change) so data we hold may be irrelevant. In both cases it makes sense to discard any 'clean' buffers, so they will be read back from the device if needed. In the former case it makes sense to discard 'dirty' buffers as there will never be anywhere safe to write the data. In the second case it *does*not* make sense to discard dirty buffers as that will lead to file system corruption when you simply enlarge the containing devices. flush_disk calls __invalidate_devices. __invalidate_device calls both invalidate_inodes and invalidate_bdev. invalidate_inodes *does* discard I_DIRTY inodes and this does lead to fs corruption. invalidate_bev *does*not* discard dirty pages, but I don't really care about that at present. So this patch adds a flag to __invalidate_device (calling it __invalidate_device2) to indicate whether dirty buffers should be killed, and this is passed to invalidate_inodes which can choose to skip dirty inodes. flusk_disk then passes true from check_disk_change and false from check_disk_size_change. dm avoids tripping over this problem by calling i_size_write directly rathher than using check_disk_size_change. md does use check_disk_size_change and so is affected. This regression was introduced by commit 608aeef17a which causes check_disk_size_change to call flush_disk, so it is suitable for any kernel since 2.6.27. floppy: fix another use-after-free While scanning the floopy code due to c093ee4f07f4 ("floppy: fix use-after-free in module load failure path"), I found one more instance of trying to access disk->queue pointer after doing put_disk() on gendisk. For some reason , floppy moule still loads/unloads fine. The object is probably still around with right pointer values. o There seems to be one more instance of trying to cleanup the request queue after we have called put_disk() on associated gendisk. o This fix is more out of code inspection. Even without this fix for some reason I am able to load/unload floppy module without any issues. o Floppy module loads/unloads fine after the fix. block: push down BKL into .open and .release The open and release block_device_operations are currently called with the BKL held. In order to change that, we must first make sure that all drivers that currently rely on this have no regressions. This blindly pushes the BKL into all .open and .release operations for all block drivers to prepare for the next step. The drivers can subsequently replace the BKL with their own locks or remove it completely when it can be shown that it is not needed. The functions blkdev_get and blkdev_put are the only remaining users of the big kernel lock in the block layer, besides a few uses in the ioctl code, none of which need to serialize with blkdev_{get,put}. Most of these two functions is also under the protection of bdev->bd_mutex, including the actual calls to ->open and ->release, and the common code does not access any global data structures that need the BKL. block: implement and enforce request peek/start/fetch Till now block layer allowed two separate modes of request execution. A request is always acquired from the request queue via elv_next_request(). After that, drivers are free to either dequeue it or process it without dequeueing. Dequeue allows elv_next_request() to return the next request so that multiple requests can be in flight. Executing requests without dequeueing has its merits mostly in allowing drivers for simpler devices which can't do sg to deal with segments only without considering request boundary. However, the benefit this brings is dubious and declining while the cost of the API ambiguity is increasing. Segment based drivers are usually for very old or limited devices and as converting to dequeueing model isn't difficult, it doesn't justify the API overhead it puts on block layer and its more modern users. Previous patches converted all block low level drivers to dequeueing model. This patch completes the API transition by... * renaming elv_next_request() to blk_peek_request() * renaming blkdev_dequeue_request() to blk_start_request() * adding blk_fetch_request() which is combination of peek and start * disallowing completion of queued (not started) requests * applying new API to all LLDs Renamings are for consistency and to break out of tree code so that it's apparent that out of tree drivers need updating. floppy: request and release only the ports we actually use The floppy driver requests an I/O port it doesn't need, and sometimes this causes a conflict with a motherboard device reported by PNPBIOS. This patch makes the floppy driver request and release only the ports it actually uses. It also factors out the request/release stuff and the io-ports list so they're all in one place now. The current floppy driver uses only these ports: 0x3f2 (FD_DOR) 0x3f4 (FD_STATUS) 0x3f5 (FD_DATA) 0x3f7 (FD_DCR/FD_DIR) but it requests 0x3f2-0x3f5 and 0x3f7, which includes the unused port 0x3f3. Some BIOSes report 0x3f3 as a motherboard resource. The PNP system driver reserves that, which causes a conflict when the floppy driver requests 0x3f2-0x3f5 later. Philippe reported that this conflict broke the floppy driver between 2.6.11 and 2.6.22. His PNPBIOS reports these devices: $ cat 00:07/id 00:07/resources # motherboard device PNP0c02 state = active io 0x80-0x80 io 0x10-0x1f io 0x22-0x3f io 0x44-0x5f io 0x90-0x9f io 0xa2-0xbf io 0x3f0-0x3f1 io 0x3f3-0x3f3 $ cat 00:03/id 00:03/resources # floppy device PNP0700 state = active io 0x3f4-0x3f5 io 0x3f2-0x3f2 Reference: http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/1/31/162 Signed-off-by: Bjorn Helgaas <bjorn.helgaas@hp.com> Signed-off-by: Philippe De Muyter <phdm@macqel.be> Reported-by: Philippe De Muyter <phdm@macqel.be> Tested-by: Philippe De Muyter <phdm@macqel.be> Cc: Adam M Belay <abelay@mit.edu> Cc: Robert Hancock <hancockrwd@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

[PATCH] beginning of methods conversion To keep the size of changesets sane we split the switch by drivers; to keep the damn thing bisectable we do the following: 1) rename the affected methods, add ones with correct prototypes, make (few) callers handle both. That's this changeset. 2) for each driver convert to new methods. *ALL* drivers are converted in this series. 3) kill the old (renamed) methods. Note that it _is_ a flagday; all in-tree drivers are converted and by the end of this series no trace of old methods remain. The only reason why we do that this way is to keep the damn thing bisectable and allow per-driver debugging if anything goes wrong. New methods: open(bdev, mode) release(disk, mode) ioctl(bdev, mode, cmd, arg) /* Called without BKL */ compat_ioctl(bdev, mode, cmd, arg) locked_ioctl(bdev, mode, cmd, arg) /* Called with BKL, legacy */ Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>

floppy: support arbitrary first-sector numbers The current floppy_struct allows floppies to number sectors starting from 0 or 1. This patch allows arbitrary first-sector numbers - for example, 0xC1 for Amstrad CPC disks. This extends the existing 1-bit field (FD_ZEROBASED, bit 2 of stretch) to 8 bits (FD_SECTMASK, bits 2 to 9). Currently 0x00 denotes a first sector number of 1, and 0x01 denotes a first sector number of 0. We extend this by interpreting FD_SECTMASK as the first sector number with the LSB flipped. WorkStruct: Pass the work_struct pointer instead of context data Pass the work_struct pointer to the work function rather than context data. The work function can use container_of() to work out the data. For the cases where the container of the work_struct may go away the moment the pending bit is cleared, it is made possible to defer the release of the structure by deferring the clearing of the pending bit. To make this work, an extra flag is introduced into the management side of the work_struct. This governs auto-release of the structure upon execution. Ordinarily, the work queue executor would release the work_struct for further scheduling or deallocation by clearing the pending bit prior to jumping to the work function. This means that, unless the driver makes some guarantee itself that the work_struct won't go away, the work function may not access anything else in the work_struct or its container lest they be deallocated.. This is a problem if the auxiliary data is taken away (as done by the last patch). However, if the pending bit is *not* cleared before jumping to the work function, then the work function *may* access the work_struct and its container with no problems. But then the work function must itself release the work_struct by calling work_release(). In most cases, automatic release is fine, so this is the default. Special initiators exist for the non-auto-release case (ending in _NAR). Signed-Off-By: David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com>

IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlers Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the Linux kernel. The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path (ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()). Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception handling. Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing. I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers. I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile with minimal configurations. This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy. Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one: struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs); And put the old one back at the end: set_irq_regs(old_regs); Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ(). In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary: - update_process_times(user_mode(regs)); - profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs); + update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs())); + profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING); I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself, except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode(). Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers: (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in the input_dev struct. (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs pointer or not. (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type irq_handler_t. [PATCH] lockdep: floppy.c irq release fix The lock validator triggered a number of bugs in the floppy driver, all related to the floppy driver allocating and freeing irq and dma resources from interrupt context. The initial solution was to use schedule_work() to push this into process context, but this caused further problems: for example the current floppy driver in -mm2 is totally broken and all floppy commands time out with an error. (as reported by Barry K. Nathan) This patch tries another solution: simply get rid of all that dynamic IRQ and DMA allocation/freeing. I doubt it made much sense back in the heydays of floppies (if two devices raced for DMA or IRQ resources then we didnt handle those cases too gracefully anyway), and today it makes near zero sense. So the new code does the simplest and most straightforward thing: allocate IRQ and DMA resources at module init time, and free them at module removal time. Dont try to release while the driver is operational. This, besides making the floppy driver functional again has an added bonus, floppy IRQ stats are finally persistent and visible in /proc/interrupts: 6: 63 XT-PIC-level floppy Besides normal floppy IO i have also tested IO error handling, motor-off timeouts, etc. - and everything seems to be working fine. [PATCH] Add block_device_operations.getgeo block device method HDIO_GETGEO is implemented in most block drivers, and all of them have to duplicate the code to copy the structure to userspace, as well as getting the start sector. This patch moves that to common code [1] and adds a ->getgeo method to fill out the raw kernel hd_geometry structure. For many drivers this means ->ioctl can go away now. [1] the s390 block drivers are odd in this respect. xpram sets ->start to 4 always which seems more than odd, and the dasd driver shifts the start offset around, probably because of it's non-standard sector size. [PATCH] fix floppy.c to store correct ro/rw status in underlying gendisk Evgeny Stambulchik found that doing the following always worked: # mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy/ mount: block device /dev/fd0 is write-protected, mounting read-only # mount -o remount,rw /mnt/floppy # echo $? 0 This is the case because the block device /dev/fd0 is writeable but the floppy disk is marked protected. A fix is to simply have floppy_open mark the underlying gendisk policy according to reality (since the VFS doesn't provide a way for do_remount_sb to inquire as to the current device status). [PATCH] Floppy: Add cmos attribute to floppy driver Currently only a device 'fdX' shows up in sysfs; the other possible device for this drive (like fd0h1440 etc) must be guessed from there. This patch corrects the floppy driver to create a platform device for each floppy found; each platform device also has an attribute 'cmos' which represents the cmos type for this drive. From this attribute the other possible device types can be computed. From: Hannes Reinecke <hare@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>

Linux-2.6.12-rc2 Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
