tracing/x86/xen: Remove zero data size trace events trace_xen_mmu_flush_tlb{_all} Doing an audit of trace events, I discovered two trace events in the xen subsystem that use a hack to create zero data size trace events. This is not what trace events are for. Trace events add memory footprint overhead, and if all you need to do is see if a function is hit or not, simply make that function noinline and use function tracer filtering. Worse yet, the hack used was: __array(char, x, 0) Which creates a static string of zero in length. There's assumptions about such constructs in ftrace that this is a dynamic string that is nul terminated. This is not the case with these tracepoints and can cause problems in various parts of ftrace. Nuke the trace events! xen/privcmd: add IOCTL_PRIVCMD_MMAP_RESOURCE My recent Xen patch series introduces a new HYPERVISOR_memory_op to support direct priv-mapping of certain guest resources (such as ioreq pages, used by emulators) by a tools domain, rather than having to access such resources via the guest P2M. This patch adds the necessary infrastructure to the privcmd driver and Xen MMU code to support direct resource mapping. NOTE: The adjustment in the MMU code is partially cosmetic. Xen will now allow a PV tools domain to map guest pages either by GFN or MFN, thus the term 'mfn' has been swapped for 'pfn' in the lower layers of the remap code. x86: Remap GDT tables in the fixmap section Each processor holds a GDT in its per-cpu structure. The sgdt instruction gives the base address of the current GDT. This address can be used to bypass KASLR memory randomization. With another bug, an attacker could target other per-cpu structures or deduce the base of the main memory section (PAGE_OFFSET). This patch relocates the GDT table for each processor inside the fixmap section. The space is reserved based on number of supported processors. For consistency, the remapping is done by default on 32 and 64-bit. Each processor switches to its remapped GDT at the end of initialization. For hibernation, the main processor returns with the original GDT and switches back to the remapping at completion. This patch was tested on both architectures. Hibernation and KVM were both tested specially for their usage of the GDT. Thanks to Boris Ostrovsky <boris.ostrovsky@oracle.com> for testing and recommending changes for Xen support. x86/xen: Audit and remove any unnecessary uses of module.h Historically a lot of these existed because we did not have a distinction between what was modular code and what was providing support to modules via EXPORT_SYMBOL and friends. That changed when we forked out support for the latter into the export.h file. This means we should be able to reduce the usage of module.h in code that is obj-y Makefile or bool Kconfig. The advantage in doing so is that module.h itself sources about 15 other headers; adding significantly to what we feed cpp, and it can obscure what headers we are effectively using. Since module.h was the source for init.h (for __init) and for export.h (for EXPORT_SYMBOL) we consider each obj-y/bool instance for the presence of either and replace as needed. x86/xen: avoid m2p lookup when setting early page table entries When page tables entries are set using xen_set_pte_init() during early boot there is no page fault handler that could handle a fault when performing an M2P lookup. In 64 bit guests (usually dom0) early_ioremap() would fault in xen_set_pte_init() because an M2P lookup faults because the MFN is in MMIO space and not mapped in the M2P. This lookup is done to see if the PFN in in the range used for the initial page table pages, so that the PTE may be set as read-only. The M2P lookup can be avoided by moving the check (and clear of RW) earlier when the PFN is still available. As the p2m list might by huge (up to several GB) and is required to be mapped virtually, set up a temporary mapping for the copied list. For pvh domains just delete the p2m related information from start info instead of reserving the p2m memory, as we don't need it at all. The memblock_reserve() call to reserve them is meant to reserve the p2m list supplied by xen. It is just reserving not only the p2m list itself, but some more pages up to the start of the xen built page tables. To be able to move the p2m list to another pfn range, which is needed for support of huge RAM, this memblock_reserve() must be split up to cover all affected reserved pages explicitly. xen: eliminate scalability issues from initial mapping setup Direct Xen to place the initial P->M table outside of the initial mapping, as otherwise the 1G (implementation) / 2G (theoretical) restriction on the size of the initial mapping limits the amount of memory a domain can be handed initially. As the initial P->M table is copied rather early during boot to domain private memory and it's initial virtual mapping is dropped, the easiest way to avoid virtual address conflicts with other addresses in the kernel is to use a user address area for the virtual address of the initial P->M table. This allows us to just throw away the page tables of the initial mapping after the copy without having to care about address invalidation. It should be noted that this patch won't enable a pv-domain to USE more than 512 GB of RAM. It just enables it to be started with a P->M table covering more memory. This is especially important for being able to boot a Dom0 on a system with more than 512 GB memory. xen/privcmd: improve performance of MMAPBATCH_V2 Make the IOCTL_PRIVCMD_MMAPBATCH_V2 (and older V1 version) map multiple frames at a time rather than one at a time, despite the pages being non-consecutive GFNs. xen_remap_foreign_mfn_array() is added which maps an array of GFNs (instead of a consecutive range of GFNs). Since per-frame errors are returned in an array, privcmd must set the MMAPBATCH_V1 error bits as part of the "report errors" phase, after all the frames are mapped. Migrate times are significantly improved (when using a PV toolstack domain). For example, for an idle 12 GiB PV guest: Before After real 0m38.179s 0m26.868s user 0m15.096s 0m13.652s sys 0m28.988s 0m18.732s Signed-off-by: David Vrabel <david.vrabel@citrix.com> Reviewed-by: Stefano Stabellini <stefano.stabellini@eu.citrix.com>

xen: switch to post-init routines in xen mmu.c earlier With the virtual mapped linear p2m list the post-init mmu operations must be used for setting up the p2m mappings, as in case of CONFIG_FLATMEM the init routines may trigger BUGs. paging_init() sets up all infrastructure needed to switch to the post-init mmu ops done by xen_post_allocator_init(). With the virtual mapped linear p2m list we need some mmu ops during setup of this list, so we have to switch to the correct mmu ops as soon as possible. The p2m list is usable from the beginning, just expansion requires to have established the new linear mapping. So the call of xen_remap_memory() had to be introduced, but this is not due to the mmu ops requiring this. Summing it up: calling xen_post_allocator_init() not directly after paging_init() was conceptually wrong in the beginning, it just didn't matter up to now as no functions used between the two calls needed some critical mmu ops (e.g. alloc_pte). This has changed now, so I corrected it. Reported-by: Boris Ostrovsky <boris.ostrovsky@oracle.com> Signed-off-by: Juergen Gross <jgross@suse.com> Signed-off-by: David Vrabel <david.vrabel@citrix.com>

xen: switch to linear virtual mapped sparse p2m list At start of the day the Xen hypervisor presents a contiguous mfn list to a pv-domain. In order to support sparse memory this mfn list is accessed via a three level p2m tree built early in the boot process. Whenever the system needs the mfn associated with a pfn this tree is used to find the mfn. Instead of using a software walked tree for accessing a specific mfn list entry this patch is creating a virtual address area for the entire possible mfn list including memory holes. The holes are covered by mapping a pre-defined page consisting only of "invalid mfn" entries. Access to a mfn entry is possible by just using the virtual base address of the mfn list and the pfn as index into that list. This speeds up the (hot) path of determining the mfn of a pfn. Kernel build on a Dell Latitude E6440 (2 cores, HT) in 64 bit Dom0 showed following improvements: Elapsed time: 32:50 -> 32:35 System: 18:07 -> 17:47 User: 104:00 -> 103:30 Tested with following configurations: - 64 bit dom0, 8GB RAM - 64 bit dom0, 128 GB RAM, PCI-area above 4 GB - 32 bit domU, 512 MB, 8 GB, 43 GB (more wouldn't work even without the patch) - 32 bit domU, ballooning up and down - 32 bit domU, save and restore - 32 bit domU with PCI passthrough - 64 bit domU, 8 GB, 2049 MB, 5000 MB - 64 bit domU, ballooning up and down - 64 bit domU, save and restore - 64 bit domU with PCI passthrough Signed-off-by: Juergen Gross <jgross@suse.com> Signed-off-by: David Vrabel <david.vrabel@citrix.com>

xen: Delay remapping memory of pv-domain Early in the boot process the memory layout of a pv-domain is changed to match the E820 map (either the host one for Dom0 or the Xen one) regarding placement of RAM and PCI holes. This requires removing memory pages initially located at positions not suitable for RAM and adding them later at higher addresses where no restrictions apply. To be able to operate on the hypervisor supported p2m list until a virtual mapped linear p2m list can be constructed, remapping must be delayed until virtual memory management is initialized, as the initial p2m list can't be extended unlimited at physical memory initialization time due to it's fixed structure. A further advantage is the reduction in complexity and code volume as we don't have to be careful regarding memory restrictions during p2m updates. x86/xen: delay construction of mfn_list_list The 3 level p2m tree for the Xen tools is constructed very early at boot by calling xen_build_mfn_list_list(). Memory needed for this tree is allocated via extend_brk(). As this tree (other than the kernel internal p2m tree) is only needed for domain save/restore, live migration and crash dump analysis it doesn't matter whether it is constructed very early or just some milliseconds later when memory allocation is possible by other means. This patch moves the call of xen_build_mfn_list_list() just after calling xen_pagetable_p2m_copy() simplifying this function, too, as it doesn't have to bother with two parallel trees now. The same applies for some other internal functions. WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 494 at linux/mm/vmalloc.c:128 vmap_page_range_noflush+0x2a1/0x360() This is caused by xen_setup_kernel_pagetables() copying level2_kernel_pgt into level2_fixmap_pgt, overwriting many non-present entries. Without KASLR, the normal kernel image size only covers the first half of level2_kernel_pgt and module space starts after that. L4[511]->level3_kernel_pgt[510]->level2_kernel_pgt[ 0..255]->kernel [256..511]->module [511]->level2_fixmap_pgt[ 0..505]->module This allows 512 MiB of of module vmalloc space to be used before having to use the corrupted level2_fixmap_pgt entries. With KASLR enabled, the kernel image uses the full PUD range of 1G and module space starts in the level2_fixmap_pgt. So basically: L4[511]->level3_kernel_pgt[510]->level2_kernel_pgt[0..511]->kernel [511]->level2_fixmap_pgt[0..505]->module And now no module vmalloc space can be used without using the corrupt level2_fixmap_pgt entries. Revert "xen: properly account for _PAGE_NUMA during xen pte translations" This reverts commit a9c8e4beeeb64c22b84c803747487857fe424b68. PTEs in Xen PV guests must contain machine addresses if _PAGE_PRESENT is set and pseudo-physical addresses is _PAGE_PRESENT is clear. This is because during a domain save/restore (migration) the page table entries are "canonicalised" and uncanonicalised". i.e., MFNs are converted to PFNs during domain save so that on a restore the page table entries may be rewritten with the new MFNs on the destination. This canonicalisation is only done for PTEs that are present. This change resulted in writing PTEs with MFNs if _PAGE_PROTNONE (or _PAGE_NUMA) was set but _PAGE_PRESENT was clear. These PTEs would be migrated as-is which would result in unexpected behaviour in the destination domain. Either a) the MFN would be translated to the wrong PFN/page; b) setting the _PAGE_PRESENT bit would clear the PTE because the MFN is no longer owned by the domain; or c) the present bit would not get set. Symptoms include "Bad page" reports when munmapping after migrating a domain. swiotlb-xen: use xen_alloc/free_coherent_pages Use xen_alloc_coherent_pages and xen_free_coherent_pages to allocate or free coherent pages. We need to be careful handling the pointer returned by xen_alloc_coherent_pages, because on ARM the pointer is not equal to phys_to_virt(*dma_handle). In fact virt_to_phys only works for kernel direct mapped RAM memory. In ARM case the pointer could be an ioremap address, therefore passing it to virt_to_phys would give you another physical address that doesn't correspond to it. Make xen_create_contiguous_region take a phys_addr_t as start parameter to avoid the virt_to_phys calls which would be incorrect. Changes in v6: - remove extra spaces. x86: Use a read-only IDT alias on all CPUs Make a copy of the IDT (as seen via the "sidt" instruction) read-only. This primarily removes the IDT from being a target for arbitrary memory write attacks, and has the added benefit of also not leaking the kernel base offset, if it has been relocated. We already did this on vendor == Intel and family == 5 because of the F0 0F bug -- regardless of if a particular CPU had the F0 0F bug or not. Since the workaround was so cheap, there simply was no reason to be very specific. This patch extends the readonly alias to all CPUs, but does not activate the #PF to #UD conversion code needed to deliver the proper exception in the F0 0F case except on Intel family 5 processors. And the _RW flag is set for that page: (XEN) L1[0x1c7] = 001000004885f067 0000000000004dc7 The error code is 3, so PFEC_page_present and PFEC_write_access, so page is present (correct), and we tried to write to the page, but a violation occurred. The one theory is that the the page entries in hardware (which are cached) are not up to date with what we just set. Especially as we have just done an CR3 write and flushed the multicalls. This patch does solve the problem by flusing out the TLB page entry after changing it from _RO to _RW and we don't hit this issue anymore. x86-64, xen, mmu: Provide an early version of write_cr3. With commit 8170e6bed465 ("x86, 64bit: Use a #PF handler to materialize early mappings on demand") we started hitting an early bootup crash where the Xen hypervisor would inform us that: (XEN) d7:v0: unhandled page fault (ec=0000) (XEN) Pagetable walk from ffffea000005b2d0: (XEN) L4[0x1d4] = 0000000000000000 ffffffffffffffff (XEN) domain_crash_sync called from entry.S (XEN) Domain 7 (vcpu#0) crashed on cpu#3: (XEN) ----[ Xen-4.2.0 x86_64 debug=n Not tainted ]---- .. that Xen was unable to context switch back to dom0. Please keep in mind that under 64-bit PV guests we have a limited amount of rings: 0 for the Hypervisor, and 1 for both the Linux kernel and user-space. As such the Linux pvops'fied version of write_cr3 checks if it has to update the user-space cr3 as well. That clearly is not needed during early bootup. The recent changes (see above git commit) streamline the x86 page table allocation to be much simpler (And also incidentally the #PF handler ends up in spirit being similar to how the Xen toolstack sets up the initial page-tables). The fix is to have an early-bootup version of cr3 that just loads the kernel %cr3. The later version - which also handles user-page modifications will be used after the initial page tables have been setup. [ hpa: removed a redundant #ifdef and made the new function __init. xen/mmu: Use Xen specific TLB flush instead of the generic one. As Mukesh explained it, the MMUEXT_TLB_FLUSH_ALL allows the hypervisor to do a TLB flush on all active vCPUs. If instead we were using the generic one (which ends up being xen_flush_tlb) we end up making the MMUEXT_TLB_FLUSH_LOCAL hypercall. But before we make that hypercall the kernel will IPI all of the vCPUs (even those that were asleep from the hypervisor perspective). The end result is that we needlessly wake them up and do a TLB flush when we can just let the hypervisor do it correctly. xen/mmu: Remove from __ka space PMD entries for pagetables. Please first read the description in "xen/mmu: Copy and revector the P2M tree." At this stage, the __ka address space (which is what the old P2M tree was using) is partially disassembled. The cleanup_highmap has removed the PMD entries from 0-16MB and anything past _brk_end up to the max_pfn_mapped (which is the end of the ramdisk). The xen_remove_p2m_tree and code around has ripped out the __ka for the old P2M array. Here we continue on doing it to where the Xen page-tables were. It is safe to do it, as the page-tables are addressed using __va. For good measure we delete anything that is within MODULES_VADDR and up to the end of the PMD. At this point the __ka only contains PMD entries for the start of the kernel up to __brk. [v1: Per Stefano's suggestion wrapped the MODULES_VADDR in debug] Signed-off-by: Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk <konrad.wilk@oracle.com>

xen/mmu: Copy and revector the P2M tree. Please first read the description in "xen/p2m: Add logic to revector a P2M tree to use __va leafs" patch. The 'xen_revector_p2m_tree()' function allocates a new P2M tree copies the contents of the old one in it, and returns the new one. At this stage, the __ka address space (which is what the old P2M tree was using) is partially disassembled. The cleanup_highmap has removed the PMD entries from 0-16MB and anything past _brk_end up to the max_pfn_mapped (which is the end of the ramdisk). We have revectored the P2M tree (and the one for save/restore as well) to use new shiny __va address to new MFNs. The xen_start_info has been taken care of already in 'xen_setup_kernel_pagetable()' and xen_start_info->shared_info in 'xen_setup_shared_info()', so we are free to roam and delete PMD entries - which is exactly what we are going to do. We rip out the __ka for the old P2M array. [v1: Fix smatch warnings] [v2: memset was doing 0 instead of 0xff] Signed-off-by: Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk <konrad.wilk@oracle.com>

xen/mm: do direct hypercall in xen_set_pte() if batching is unavailable In xen_set_pte() if batching is unavailable (because the caller is in an interrupt context such as handling a page fault) it would fall back to using native_set_pte() and trapping and emulating the PTE write. On 32-bit guests this requires two traps for each PTE write (one for each dword of the PTE). Instead, do one mmu_update hypercall directly. During construction of the initial page tables, continue to use native_set_pte() because most of the PTEs being set are in writable and unpinned pages (see phys_pmd_init() in arch/x86/mm/init_64.c) and using a hypercall for this is very expensive. This significantly improves page fault performance in 32-bit PV guests. lmbench3 test Before After Improvement ---------------------------------------------- lat_pagefault 3.18 us 2.32 us 27% lat_proc fork 356 us 313.3 us 11% Signed-off-by: David Vrabel <david.vrabel@citrix.com> Signed-off-by: Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk <konrad.wilk@oracle.com>

x86/flush_tlb: try flush_tlb_single one by one in flush_tlb_range x86 has no flush_tlb_range support in instruction level. Currently the flush_tlb_range just implemented by flushing all page table. That is not the best solution for all scenarios. In fact, if we just use 'invlpg' to flush few lines from TLB, we can get the performance gain from later remain TLB lines accessing. But the 'invlpg' instruction costs much of time. Its execution time can compete with cr3 rewriting, and even a bit more on SNB CPU. So, on a 512 4KB TLB entries CPU, the balance points is at: (512 - X) * 100ns(assumed TLB refill cost) = X(TLB flush entries) * 100ns(assumed invlpg cost) Here, X is 256, that is 1/2 of 512 entries. But with the mysterious CPU pre-fetcher and page miss handler Unit, the assumed TLB refill cost is far lower then 100ns in sequential access. And 2 HT siblings in one core makes the memory access more faster if they are accessing the same memory. So, in the patch, I just do the change when the target entries is less than 1/16 of whole active tlb entries. Actually, I have no data support for the percentage '1/16', so any suggestions are welcomed. As to hugetlb, guess due to smaller page table, and smaller active TLB entries, I didn't see benefit via my benchmark, so no optimizing now. My micro benchmark show in ideal scenarios, the performance improves 70 percent in reading. And in worst scenario, the reading/writing performance is similar with unpatched 3.4-rc4 kernel. xen/setup: update VA mapping when releasing memory during setup In xen_memory_setup(), if a page that is being released has a VA mapping this must also be updated. Otherwise, the page will be not released completely -- it will still be referenced in Xen and won't be freed util the mapping is removed and this prevents it from being reallocated at a different PFN. This was already being done for the ISA memory region in xen_ident_map_ISA() but on many systems this was omitting a few pages as many systems marked a few pages below the ISA memory region as reserved in the e820 map. The reason (at least in this case) was that PGD[256] is set to __HYPERVISOR_VIRT_START which was setup (by the hypervisor) to point to a read-only linear map of the MFN->PFN array. During our parsing we would get the MFN (a valid one), try to look it up in the MFN->PFN tree and find it invalid and return ~0 as PFN. Then pte_mfn_to_pfn would happilly feed that in, attach the flags and return it back to the caller. 'ptdump_show' bitshifts it and gets and invalid value that it tries to dereference. Instead of doing all of that, we detect the ~0 case and just return !_PAGE_PRESENT. This bug has been in existence .. at least until 2.6.37 (yikes!) That function calls mp_find_ioapics to get the 'struct ioapic' structure - which along with the mp_irq[x] is used to figure out the default values and the polarity/trigger overrides. Since the mp_find_ioapics now returns -1 [b/c the IOAPIC is filled with 0xffffffff], the acpi_get_override_irq() stops trying to lookup in the mp_irq[x] the proper INT_SRV_OVR and we can't install the SCI interrupt. The proper fix for this is going in v3.5 and adds an x86_io_apic_ops struct so that platforms can override it. But for v3.4 lets carry this work-around. This patch does that by providing a slightly different variant of the fake IOAPIC entries. Signed-off-by: Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk <konrad.wilk@oracle.com>

xen/pat: Disable PAT support for now. [Pls also look at https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/2/10/228] Using of PAT to change pages from WB to WC works quite nicely. Changing it back to WB - not so much. The negative impact of this patch is that users of WC flag (which are InfiniBand, radeon, nouveau drivers) won't be able to set that flag - so they are going to see performance degradation. xen/x86: replace order-based range checking of M2P table by linear one The order-based approach is not only less efficient (requiring a shift and a compare, typical generated code looking like this mov eax, [machine_to_phys_order] mov ecx, eax shr ebx, cl test ebx, ebx jnz ... whereas a direct check requires just a compare, like in cmp ebx, [machine_to_phys_nr] jae ... ), but also slightly dangerous in the 32-on-64 case - the element address calculation can wrap if the next power of two boundary is sufficiently far away from the actual upper limit of the table, and hence can result in user space addresses being accessed (with it being unknown what may actually be mapped there). Additionally, the elimination of the mistaken use of fls() here (should have been __fls()) fixes a latent issue on x86-64 that would trigger if the code was run on a system with memory extending beyond the 44-bit boundary. memblock, x86: Replace memblock_x86_reserve/free_range() with generic ones Other than sanity check and debug message, the x86 specific version of memblock reserve/free functions are simple wrappers around the generic versions - memblock_reserve/free(). xen: support CONFIG_MAXSMP The MAXSMP config option requires CPUMASK_OFFSTACK, which in turn requires we init the memory for the maps while we bring up the cpus. MAXSMP also increases NR_CPUS to 4096. This increase in size exposed an issue in the argument construction for multicalls from xen_flush_tlb_others. The args should only need space for the actual number of cpus. Also in 2.6.39 it exposes a bootup problem. xen: partially revert "xen: set max_pfn_mapped to the last pfn mapped" We only need to set max_pfn_mapped to the last pfn mapped on x86_64 to make sure that cleanup_highmap doesn't remove important mappings at _end. We don't need to do this on x86_32 because cleanup_highmap is not called on x86_32. Besides lowering max_pfn_mapped on x86_32 has the unwanted side effect of limiting the amount of memory available for the 1:1 kernel pagetable allocation. This patch reverts the x86_32 part of the original patch. xen: use mmu_update for xen_set_pte_at() In principle update_va_mapping is a good match for set_pte_at, since it gets the address being mapped, which allows Xen to use its linear pagetable mapping. However that assumes that the pmd for the address is attached to the current pagetable, which may not be true for a given user address space because the kernel pmd is not shared (at least on 32-bit guests). Normally the kernel will automatically sync a missing part of the pagetable with the init_mm pagetable transparently via faults, but that fails when a missing address is passed to Xen. And while the linear pagetable mapping is very useful for 32-bit Xen (as it avoids an explicit domain mapping), 32-bit Xen is deprecated. 64-bit Xen has all memory mapped all the time, so it makes no real difference. The upshot is that we should use mmu_update, since it can operate on non-current pagetables or detached pagetables. Signed-off-by: Jeremy Fitzhardinge <jeremy.fitzhardinge@citrix.com>

x86,xen: introduce x86_init.mapping.pagetable_reserve Introduce a new x86_init hook called pagetable_reserve that at the end of init_memory_mapping is used to reserve a range of memory addresses for the kernel pagetable pages we used and free the other ones. On native it just calls memblock_x86_reserve_range while on xen it also takes care of setting the spare memory previously allocated for kernel pagetable pages from RO to RW, so that it can be used for other purposes. A detailed explanation of the reason why this hook is needed follows. As a consequence of the commit: commit 4b239f458c229de044d6905c2b0f9fe16ed9e01e Author: Yinghai Lu <yinghai@kernel.org> Date: Fri Dec 17 16:58:28 2010 -0800 x86-64, mm: Put early page table high at some point init_memory_mapping is going to reach the pagetable pages area and map those pages too (mapping them as normal memory that falls in the range of addresses passed to init_memory_mapping as argument). Some of those pages are already pagetable pages (they are in the range pgt_buf_start-pgt_buf_end) therefore they are going to be mapped RO and everything is fine. Some of these pages are not pagetable pages yet (they fall in the range pgt_buf_end-pgt_buf_top; for example the page at pgt_buf_end) so they are going to be mapped RW. When these pages become pagetable pages and are hooked into the pagetable, xen will find that the guest has already a RW mapping of them somewhere and fail the operation. The reason Xen requires pagetables to be RO is that the hypervisor needs to verify that the pagetables are valid before using them. The validation operations are called "pinning" (more details in arch/x86/xen/mmu.c). In order to fix the issue we mark all the pages in the entire range pgt_buf_start-pgt_buf_top as RO, however when the pagetable allocation is completed only the range pgt_buf_start-pgt_buf_end is reserved by init_memory_mapping. Hence the kernel is going to crash as soon as one of the pages in the range pgt_buf_end-pgt_buf_top is reused (b/c those ranges are RO). For this reason we need a hook to reserve the kernel pagetable pages we used and free the other ones so that they can be reused for other purposes. On native it just means calling memblock_x86_reserve_range, on Xen it also means marking RW the pagetable pages that we allocated before but that haven't been used before. Another way to fix this is without using the hook is by adding a 'if (xen_pv_domain)' in the 'init_memory_mapping' code and calling the Xen counterpart, but that is just nasty. xen/mmu: Add workaround "x86-64, mm: Put early page table high" As a consequence of the commit: commit 4b239f458c229de044d6905c2b0f9fe16ed9e01e Author: Yinghai Lu <yinghai@kernel.org> Date: Fri Dec 17 16:58:28 2010 -0800 x86-64, mm: Put early page table high it causes the Linux kernel to crash under Xen: mapping kernel into physical memory Xen: setup ISA identity maps about to get started... (XEN) mm.c:2466:d0 Bad type (saw 7400000000000001 != exp 1000000000000000) for mfn b1d89 (pfn bacf7) (XEN) mm.c:3027:d0 Error while pinning mfn b1d89 (XEN) traps.c:481:d0 Unhandled invalid opcode fault/trap [#6] on VCPU 0 [ec=0000] (XEN) domain_crash_sync called from entry.S (XEN) Domain 0 (vcpu#0) crashed on cpu#0: ... The reason is that at some point init_memory_mapping is going to reach the pagetable pages area and map those pages too (mapping them as normal memory that falls in the range of addresses passed to init_memory_mapping as argument). For this reason, this function is introduced which is called _after_ the init_memory_mapping has completed (in a perfect world we would call this function from init_memory_mapping, but lets ignore that). Because we are called _after_ init_memory_mapping the pgt_buf_[start, end, top] have all changed to new values (b/c another init_memory_mapping is called). Hence, the first time we enter this function, we save away the pgt_buf_start value and update the pgt_buf_[end,top]. When we detect that the "old" pgt_buf_start through pgt_buf_end PFNs have been reserved (so memblock_x86_reserve_range has been called), we immediately set out to RW the "old" pgt_buf_end through pgt_buf_top. And then we update those "old" pgt_buf_[end|top] with the new ones so that we can redo this on the next pagetable. Acked-by: "H. Peter Anvin" <hpa@zytor.com> Reviewed-by: Jeremy Fitzhardinge <jeremy.fitzhardinge@citrix.com> [v1: Updated with Jeremy's comments] [v2: Added the crash output] Signed-off-by: Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk <konrad.wilk@oracle.com>

xen: mask_rw_pte: do not apply the early_ioremap checks on x86_32 The two "is_early_ioremap_ptep" checks in mask_rw_pte are only used on x86_64, in fact early_ioremap is not used at all to setup the initial pagetable on x86_32. Moreover on x86_32 the two checks are wrong because the range pgt_buf_start..pgt_buf_end initially should be mapped RW because the pages in the range are not pagetable pages yet and haven't been cleared yet. Afterwards considering the pgt_buf_start..pgt_buf_end is part of the initial mapping, xen_alloc_pte is capable of turning the ptes RO when they become pagetable pages. Fix the issue and improve the readability of the code providing two different implementation of mask_rw_pte for x86_32 and x86_64. xen: update mask_rw_pte after kernel page tables init changes After "x86-64, mm: Put early page table high" already existing kernel page table pages can be mapped using early_ioremap too so we need to update mask_rw_pte to make sure these pages are still mapped RO. The reason why we have to do that is explain by the commit message of fef5ba797991f9335bcfc295942b684f9bf613a1: "Xen requires that all pages containing pagetable entries to be mapped read-only. If pages used for the initial pagetable are already mapped then we can change the mapping to RO. However, if they are initially unmapped, we need to make sure that when they are later mapped, they are also mapped RO. ..SNIP.. the pagetable setup code early_ioremaps the pages to write their entries, so we must make sure that mappings created in the early_ioremap fixmap area are mapped RW. (Those mappings are removed before the pages are presented to Xen as pagetable pages.)" We accomplish all this in mask_rw_pte by mapping RO all the pages mapped using early_ioremap apart from the last one that has been allocated because it is not a page table page yet (it has not been hooked into the page tables yet). xen: Mark all initial reserved pages for the balloon as INVALID_P2M_ENTRY. With this patch, we diligently set regions that will be used by the balloon driver to be INVALID_P2M_ENTRY and under the ownership of the balloon driver. We are OK using the __set_phys_to_machine as we do not expect to be allocating any P2M middle or entries pages. The set_phys_to_machine has the side-effect of potentially allocating new pages and we do not want that at this stage. We can do this because xen_build_mfn_list_list will have already allocated all such pages up to xen_max_p2m_pfn. We also move the check for auto translated physmap down the stack so it is present in __set_phys_to_machine. vmalloc: eagerly clear ptes on vunmap On stock 2.6.37-rc4, running: # mount lilith:/export /mnt/lilith # find /mnt/lilith/ -type f -print0 | xargs -0 file crashes the machine fairly quickly under Xen. Often it results in oops messages, but the couple of times I tried just now, it just hung quietly and made Xen print some rude messages: (XEN) mm.c:2389:d80 Bad type (saw 7400000000000001 != exp 3000000000000000) for mfn 1d7058 (pfn 18fa7) (XEN) mm.c:964:d80 Attempt to create linear p.t. with write perms (XEN) mm.c:2389:d80 Bad type (saw 7400000000000010 != exp 1000000000000000) for mfn 1d2e04 (pfn 1d1fb) (XEN) mm.c:2965:d80 Error while pinning mfn 1d2e04 Which means the domain tried to map a pagetable page RW, which would allow it to map arbitrary memory, so Xen stopped it. This is because vm_unmap_ram() left some pages mapped in the vmalloc area after NFS had finished with them, and those pages got recycled as pagetable pages while still having these RW aliases. Removing those mappings immediately removes the Xen-visible aliases, and so it has no problem with those pages being reused as pagetable pages. Deferring the TLB flush doesn't upset Xen because it can flush the TLB itself as needed to maintain its invariants. When unmapping a region in the vmalloc space, clear the ptes immediately. There's no point in deferring this because there's no amortization benefit. The TLBs are left dirty, and they are flushed lazily to amortize the cost of the IPIs. This specific motivation for this patch is an oops-causing regression since 2.6.36 when using NFS under Xen, triggered by the NFS client's use of vm_map_ram() introduced in 56e4ebf877b60 ("NFS: readdir with vmapped pages") . XFS also uses vm_map_ram() and could cause similar problems. xen: correctly rebuild mfn list list after migration. Otherwise the second migration attempt fails because the mfn_list_list still refers to all the old mfns. We need to update the entires in both p2m_top_mfn and the mid_mfn pages which p2m_top_mfn refers to. In order to do this we need to keep track of the virtual addresses mapping the p2m_mid_mfn pages since we cannot rely on mfn_to_virt(p2m_top_mfn[idx]) since p2m_top_mfn[idx] will still contain the old MFN after a migration, which may now belong to another domain and hence have a different mapping in the m2p. Therefore add and maintain a third top level page, p2m_top_mfn_p[], which tracks the virtual addresses of the mfns contained in p2m_top_mfn[]. We also need to update the content of the p2m_mid_missing_mfn page on resume to refer to the page's new mfn. p2m_missing does not need updating since the migration process takes care of the leaf p2m pages for us. xen: add support for PAT Convert Linux PAT entries into Xen ones when constructing ptes. Linux doesn't use _PAGE_PAT for ptes, so the only difference in the first 4 entries is that Linux uses _PAGE_PWT for WC, whereas Xen (and default) use it for WT. xen_pte_val does the inverse conversion. We hard-code assumptions about Linux's current PAT layout, but a warning on the wrmsr to MSR_IA32_CR_PAT should point out any problems. If necessary we could go to a more general table-based conversion between Linux and Xen PAT entries. hugetlbfs poses a problem at the moment, the x86 architecture uses the same flag for _PAGE_PAT and _PAGE_PSE, which changes meaning depending on which pagetable level we're using. At the moment this should be OK so long as nobody tries to do a pte_val on a hugetlbfs pte. Signed-off-by: Jeremy Fitzhardinge <jeremy.fitzhardinge@citrix.com>

xen: convert p2m to a 3 level tree Make the p2m structure a 3 level tree which covers the full possible physical space. The p2m structure contains mappings from the domain's pfns to system-wide mfns. The structure has 3 levels and two roots. The first root is for the domain's own use, and is linked with virtual addresses. The second is all mfn references, and is used by Xen on save/restore to allow it to update the p2m mapping for the domain. At boot, the domain builder provides a simple flat p2m array for all the initially present pages. We construct the two levels above that using the early_brk allocator. After early boot time, set_phys_to_machine() will allocate any missing levels using the normal kernel allocator (at GFP_KERNEL, so it must be called in a normal blocking context). Because the early_brk() API requires us to pre-reserve the maximum amount of memory we could allocate, there is still a CONFIG_XEN_MAX_DOMAIN_MEMORY config option, but its only negative side-effect is to increase the kernel's apparent bss size. However, since all unused brk memory is returned to the heap, there's no real downside to making it large. Signed-off-by: Jeremy Fitzhardinge <jeremy.fitzhardinge@citrix.com>

xen: Cope with unmapped pages when initializing kernel pagetable Xen requires that all pages containing pagetable entries to be mapped read-only. If pages used for the initial pagetable are already mapped then we can change the mapping to RO. However, if they are initially unmapped, we need to make sure that when they are later mapped, they are also mapped RO. We do this by knowing that the kernel pagetable memory is pre-allocated in the range e820_table_start - e820_table_end, so any pfn within this range should be mapped read-only. However, the pagetable setup code early_ioremaps the pages to write their entries, so we must make sure that mappings created in the early_ioremap fixmap area are mapped RW. (Those mappings are removed before the pages are presented to Xen as pagetable pages.) xen/mmu: inhibit vmap aliases rather than trying to clear them out Rather than trying to deal with aliases once they appear, just completely inhibit them. Mostly the removal of aliases was managable, but it comes unstuck in xen_create_contiguous_region() because it gets executed at interrupt time (as a result of dma_alloc_coherent()), which causes all sorts of confusion in the vmap code, as it was never intended to be run in interrupt context. include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. x86: add brk allocation for very, very early allocations Impact: new interface Add a brk()-like allocator which effectively extends the bss in order to allow very early code to do dynamic allocations. This is better than using statically allocated arrays for data in subsystems which may never get used. The space for brk allocations is in the bss ELF segment, so that the space is mapped properly by the code which maps the kernel, and so that bootloaders keep the space free rather than putting a ramdisk or something into it. The bss itself, delimited by __bss_stop, ends before the brk area (__brk_base to __brk_limit). The kernel text, data and bss is reserved up to __bss_stop. Any brk-allocated data is reserved separately just before the kernel pagetable is built, as that code allocates from unreserved spaces in the e820 map, potentially allocating from any unused brk memory. Ultimately any unused memory in the brk area is used in the general kernel memory pool. Initially the brk space is set to 1MB, which is probably much larger than any user needs (the largest current user is i386 head_32.S's code to build the pagetables to map the kernel, which can get fairly large with a big kernel image and no PSE support). So long as the system has sufficient memory for the bootloader to reserve the kernel+1MB brk, there are no bad effects resulting from an over-large brk. (other architectures will fall back to a default implementation) The advantage is that for example to read a local percpu variable, instead of this sequence: return __get_cpu_var(var); ffffffff8102ca2b: 48 8b 14 fd 80 09 74 mov -0x7e8bf680(,%rdi,8),%rdx ffffffff8102ca32: 81 ffffffff8102ca33: 48 c7 c0 d8 59 00 00 mov $0x59d8,%rax ffffffff8102ca3a: 48 8b 04 10 mov (%rax,%rdx,1),%rax We can get a single instruction by using the optimized variants: return percpu_read(var); ffffffff8102ca3f: 65 48 8b 05 91 8f fd mov %gs:0x7efd8f91(%rip),%rax I also cleaned up the x86-specific APIs and made the x86 code use these new generic percpu primitives. tj: * fixed generic percpu_sub() definition as Roel Kluin pointed out * added percpu_and() for completeness's sake * made generic percpu ops atomic against preemption Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org>

xen: make sure stray alias mappings are gone before pinning Xen requires that all mappings of pagetable pages are read-only, so that they can't be updated illegally. As a result, if a page is being turned into a pagetable page, we need to make sure all its mappings are RO. If the page had been used for ioremap or vmalloc, it may still have left over mappings as a result of not having been lazily unmapped. This change makes sure we explicitly mop them all up before pinning the page. Unlike aliases created by kmap, the there can be vmalloc aliases even for non-high pages, so we must do the flush unconditionally. x86, xen: fix use of pgd_page now that it really does return a page Impact: fix 32-bit Xen guest boot crash On 32-bit PAE, pud_page, for no good reason, didn't really return a struct page *. Since Jan Beulich's fix "i386/PAE: fix pud_page()", pud_page does return a struct page *. Because PAE has 3 pagetable levels, the pud level is folded into the pgd level, so pgd_page() is the same as pud_page(), and now returns a struct page *. xen: fix Xen domU boot with batched mprotect Impact: fix guest kernel boot crash on certain configs Recent i686 2.6.27 kernels with a certain amount of memory (between 736 and 855MB) have a problem booting under a hypervisor that supports batched mprotect (this includes the RHEL-5 Xen hypervisor as well as any 3.3 or later Xen hypervisor). The problem ends up being that xen_ptep_modify_prot_commit() is using virt_to_machine to calculate which pfn to update. However, this only works for pages that are in the p2m list, and the pages coming from change_pte_range() in mm/mprotect.c are kmap_atomic pages. Because of this, we can run into the situation where the lookup in the p2m table returns an INVALID_MFN, which we then try to pass to the hypervisor, which then (correctly) denies the request to a totally bogus pfn. The right thing to do is to use arbitrary_virt_to_machine, so that we can be sure we are modifying the right pfn. This unfortunately introduces a performance penalty because of a full page-table-walk, but we can avoid that penalty for pages in the p2m list by checking if virt_addr_valid is true, and if so, just doing the lookup in the p2m table. The attached patch implements this, and allows my 2.6.27 i686 based guest with 768MB of memory to boot on a RHEL-5 hypervisor again. Thanks to Jeremy for the suggestions about how to fix this particular issue. mm: rewrite vmap layer Rewrite the vmap allocator to use rbtrees and lazy tlb flushing, and provide a fast, scalable percpu frontend for small vmaps (requires a slightly different API, though). The biggest problem with vmap is actually vunmap. Presently this requires a global kernel TLB flush, which on most architectures is a broadcast IPI to all CPUs to flush the cache. This is all done under a global lock. As the number of CPUs increases, so will the number of vunmaps a scaled workload will want to perform, and so will the cost of a global TLB flush. This gives terrible quadratic scalability characteristics. Another problem is that the entire vmap subsystem works under a single lock. It is a rwlock, but it is actually taken for write in all the fast paths, and the read locking would likely never be run concurrently anyway, so it's just pointless. This is a rewrite of vmap subsystem to solve those problems. The existing vmalloc API is implemented on top of the rewritten subsystem. The TLB flushing problem is solved by using lazy TLB unmapping. vmap addresses do not have to be flushed immediately when they are vunmapped, because the kernel will not reuse them again (would be a use-after-free) until they are reallocated. So the addresses aren't allocated again until a subsequent TLB flush. A single TLB flush then can flush multiple vunmaps from each CPU. XEN and PAT and such do not like deferred TLB flushing because they can't always handle multiple aliasing virtual addresses to a physical address. They now call vm_unmap_aliases() in order to flush any deferred mappings. That call is very expensive (well, actually not a lot more expensive than a single vunmap under the old scheme), however it should be OK if not called too often. The virtual memory extent information is stored in an rbtree rather than a linked list to improve the algorithmic scalability. There is a per-CPU allocator for small vmaps, which amortizes or avoids global locking. To use the per-CPU interface, the vm_map_ram / vm_unmap_ram interfaces must be used in place of vmap and vunmap. Vmalloc does not use these interfaces at the moment, so it will not be quite so scalable (although it will use lazy TLB flushing). As a quick test of performance, I ran a test that loops in the kernel, linearly mapping then touching then unmapping 4 pages. Different numbers of tests were run in parallel on an 4 core, 2 socket opteron. Results are in nanoseconds per map+touch+unmap. threads vanilla vmap rewrite 1 14700 2900 2 33600 3000 4 49500 2800 8 70631 2900 So with a 8 cores, the rewritten version is already 25x faster. In a slightly more realistic test (although with an older and less scalable version of the patch), I ripped the not-very-good vunmap batching code out of XFS, and implemented the large buffer mapping with vm_map_ram and vm_unmap_ram... along with a couple of other tricks, I was able to speed up a large directory workload by 20x on a 64 CPU system. I believe vmap/vunmap is actually sped up a lot more than 20x on such a system, but I'm running into other locks now. vmap is pretty well blown off the profiles. xen: use spin_lock_nest_lock when pinning a pagetable When pinning/unpinning a pagetable with split pte locks, we can end up holding multiple pte locks at once (we need to hold the locks while there's a pending batched hypercall affecting the pte page). Because all the pte locks are in the same lock class, lockdep thinks that we're potentially taking a lock recursively. This warning is spurious because we always take the pte locks while holding mm->page_table_lock. lockdep now has spin_lock_nest_lock to express this kind of dominant lock use, so use it here so that lockdep knows what's going on. Aside from the fact that PTE_MASK gives no clue as to what's actually being masked, and is misleadingly similar to the functionally entirely different PMD_MASK, PUD_MASK and PGD_MASK, I don't really see what the problem is. xen64: allocate and manage user pagetables Because the x86_64 architecture does not enforce segment limits, Xen cannot protect itself with them as it does in 32-bit mode. Therefore, to protect itself, it runs the guest kernel in ring 3. Since it also runs the guest userspace in ring3, the guest kernel must maintain a second pagetable for its userspace, which does not map kernel space. Naturally, the guest kernel pagetables map both kernel and userspace. The userspace pagetable is attached to the corresponding kernel pagetable via the pgd's page->private field. It is allocated and freed at the same time as the kernel pgd via the paravirt_pgd_alloc/free hooks. Fortunately, the user pagetable is almost entirely shared with the kernel pagetable; the only difference is the pgd page itself. set_pgd will populate all entries in the kernel pagetable, and also set the corresponding user pgd entry if the address is less than STACK_TOP_MAX. The user pagetable must be pinned and unpinned with the kernel one, but because the pagetables are aliased, pgd_walk() only needs to be called on the kernel pagetable. The user pgd page is then pinned/unpinned along with the kernel pgd page. xen_write_cr3 must write both the kernel and user cr3s. The init_mm.pgd pagetable never has a user pagetable allocated for it, because it can never be used while running usermode. One awkward area is that early in boot the page structures are not available. No user pagetable can exist at that point, but it complicates the logic to avoid looking at the page structure. xen: rework pgd_walk to deal with 32/64 bit Rewrite pgd_walk to deal with 64-bit address spaces. There are two notible features of 64-bit workspaces: 1. The physical address is only 48 bits wide, with the upper 16 bits being sign extension; kernel addresses are negative, and userspace is positive. 2. The Xen hypervisor mapping is at the negative-most address, just above the sign-extension hole. 1. means that we can't easily use addresses when traversing the space, since we must deal with sign extension. This rewrite expresses everything in terms of pgd/pud/pmd indices, which means we don't need to worry about the exact configuration of the virtual memory space. This approach works equally well in 32-bit. To deal with 2, assume the hole is between the uppermost userspace address and PAGE_OFFSET. For 64-bit this skips the Xen mapping hole. For 32-bit, the hole is zero-sized. In all cases, the uppermost kernel address is FIXADDR_TOP. A side-effect of this patch is that the upper boundary is actually handled properly, exposing a long-standing bug in 32-bit, which failed to pin kernel pmd page. The kernel pmd is not shared, and so must be explicitly pinned, even though the kernel ptes are shared and don't need pinning. xen: add mechanism to extend existing multicalls Some Xen hypercalls accept an array of operations to work on. In general this is because its more efficient for the hypercall to the work all at once rather than as separate hypercalls (even batched as a multicall). This patch adds a mechanism (xen_mc_extend_args()) to allocate more argument space to the last-issued multicall, in order to extend its argument list. The user of this mechanism is xen/mmu.c, which uses it to extend the args array of mmu_update. This is particularly valuable when doing the update for a large mprotect, which goes via ptep_modify_prot_commit(), but it also manages to batch updates to pgd/pmds as well. xen: implement ptep_modify_prot_start/commit Xen has a pte update function which will update a pte while preserving its accessed and dirty bits. This means that ptep_modify_prot_start() can be implemented as a simple read of the pte value. The hardware may update the pte in the meantime, but ptep_modify_prot_commit() updates it while preserving any changes that may have happened in the meantime. The updates in ptep_modify_prot_commit() are batched if we're currently in lazy mmu mode. The mmu_update hypercall can take a batch of updates to perform, but this code doesn't make particular use of that feature, in favour of using generic multicall batching to get them all into the hypervisor. The net effect of this is that each mprotect pte update turns from two expensive trap-and-emulate faults into they hypervisor into a single hypercall whose cost is amortized in a batched multicall. In this case the size of p2m_top_mfn_list is not page aligned: 80b8d000 b p2m_top_mfn 80b8f000 b p2m_top_mfn_list 80b8f008 b softirq_stack 80b97008 b hardirq_stack 80b9f008 b bm_pte So all subsequent variables get unaligned which, depending on luck, breaks the kernel in various funny ways. In this case what killed the kernel first was the misaligned bootmap pte page, resulting in that creative crash above. Anyway, this was a fun bug to track down :-) I think the moral is that .bss.page_aligned is a dangerous construct in its current form, and the symptoms of breakage are very non-trivial, so i think we need build-time checks to make sure all symbols in .bss.page_aligned are truly page aligned. The Xen fix below gets the kernel booting again. Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu>

xen: implement save/restore This patch implements Xen save/restore and migration. Saving is triggered via xenbus, which is polled in drivers/xen/manage.c. When a suspend request comes in, the kernel prepares itself for saving by: 1 - Freeze all processes. This is primarily to prevent any partially-completed pagetable updates from confusing the suspend process. If CONFIG_PREEMPT isn't defined, then this isn't necessary. 2 - Suspend xenbus and other devices 3 - Stop_machine, to make sure all the other vcpus are quiescent. The Xen tools require the domain to run its save off vcpu0. 4 - Within the stop_machine state, it pins any unpinned pgds (under construction or destruction), performs canonicalizes various other pieces of state (mostly converting mfns to pfns), and finally 5 - Suspend the domain Restore reverses the steps used to save the domain, ending when all the frozen processes are thawed. xen: add p2m mfn_list_list When saving a domain, the Xen tools need to remap all our mfns to portable pfns. xen: efficiently support a holey p2m table When using sparsemem and memory hotplug, the kernel's pseudo-physical address space can be discontigious. Previously this was dealt with by having the upper parts of the radix tree stubbed off. Unfortunately, this is incompatible with save/restore, which requires a complete p2m table. The solution is to have a special distinguished all-invalid p2m leaf page, which we can point all the hole areas at. This allows the tools to see a complete p2m table, but it only costs a page for all memory holes. It also simplifies the code since it removes a few special cases. xen: add configurable max domain size Add a config option to set the max size of a Xen domain. This is used to scale the size of the physical-to-machine array; it ends up using around 1 page/GByte, so there's no reason to be very restrictive. For a 32-bit guest, the default value of 8GB is probably sufficient; there's not much point in giving a 32-bit machine much more memory than that. xen: mask _PAGE_PCD from ptes _PAGE_PCD maps a page with caching disabled, which is typically used for mapping harware registers. Xen never allows it to be set on a mapping, and unprivileged guests never need it since they can't see the real underlying hardware. However, some uncached mappings are made early when probing the (non-existent) APIC, and its OK to mask off the PCD flag in these cases. This became necessary because Xen started checking for this bit, rather than silently masking it off. xen: lock pte pages while pinning/unpinning When a pagetable is created, it is made globally visible in the rmap prio tree before it is pinned via arch_dup_mmap(), and remains in the rmap tree while it is unpinned with arch_exit_mmap(). This means that other CPUs may race with the pinning/unpinning process, and see a pte between when it gets marked RO and actually pinned, causing any pte updates to fail with write-protect faults. As a result, all pte pages must be properly locked, and only unlocked once the pinning/unpinning process has finished. In order to avoid taking spinlocks for the whole pagetable - which may overflow the PREEMPT_BITS portion of preempt counter - it locks and pins each pte page individually, and then finally pins the whole pagetable. xen: deal with stale cr3 values when unpinning pagetables When a pagetable is no longer in use, it must be unpinned so that its pages can be freed. However, this is only possible if there are no stray uses of the pagetable. The code currently deals with all the usual cases, but there's a rare case where a vcpu is changing cr3, but is doing so lazily, and the change hasn't actually happened by the time the pagetable is unpinned, even though it appears to have been completed. This change adds a second per-cpu cr3 variable - xen_current_cr3 - which tracks the actual state of the vcpu cr3. It is only updated once the actual hypercall to set cr3 has been completed. Other processors wishing to unpin a pagetable can check other vcpu's xen_current_cr3 values to see if any cross-cpu IPIs are needed to clean things up. paravirt: clean up lazy mode handling Currently, the set_lazy_mode pv_op is overloaded with 5 functions: 1. enter lazy cpu mode 2. leave lazy cpu mode 3. enter lazy mmu mode 4. leave lazy mmu mode 5. flush pending batched operations This complicates each paravirt backend, since it needs to deal with all the possible state transitions, handling flushing, etc. In particular, flushing is quite distinct from the other 4 functions, and seems to just cause complication. This patch removes the set_lazy_mode operation, and adds "enter" and "leave" lazy mode operations on mmu_ops and cpu_ops. All the logic associated with enter and leaving lazy states is now in common code (basically BUG_ONs to make sure that no mode is current when entering a lazy mode, and make sure that the mode is current when leaving). Also, flush is handled in a common way, by simply leaving and re-entering the lazy mode. The result is that the Xen, lguest and VMI lazy mode implementations are much simpler.
