vfs: do bulk POLL* -> EPOLL* replacement This is the mindless scripted replacement of kernel use of POLL* variables as described by Al, done by this script: for V in IN OUT PRI ERR RDNORM RDBAND WRNORM WRBAND HUP RDHUP NVAL MSG; do L=`git grep -l -w POLL$V | grep -v '^t' | grep -v /um/ | grep -v '^sa' | grep -v '/poll.h$'|grep -v '^D'` for f in $L; do sed -i "-es/^\([^\"]*\)\(\<POLL$V\>\)/\\1E\\2/" $f; done done with de-mangling cleanups yet to come. NOTE! On almost all architectures, the EPOLL* constants have the same values as the POLL* constants do. But they keyword here is "almost". For various bad reasons they aren't the same, and epoll() doesn't actually work quite correctly in some cases due to this on Sparc et al. The next patch from Al will sort out the final differences, and we should be all done. Scripted-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

x86: Remap GDT tables in the fixmap section Each processor holds a GDT in its per-cpu structure. The sgdt instruction gives the base address of the current GDT. This address can be used to bypass KASLR memory randomization. With another bug, an attacker could target other per-cpu structures or deduce the base of the main memory section (PAGE_OFFSET). This patch relocates the GDT table for each processor inside the fixmap section. The space is reserved based on number of supported processors. For consistency, the remapping is done by default on 32 and 64-bit. Each processor switches to its remapped GDT at the end of initialization. For hibernation, the main processor returns with the original GDT and switches back to the remapping at completion. This patch was tested on both architectures. Hibernation and KVM were both tested specially for their usage of the GDT. Thanks to Boris Ostrovsky <boris.ostrovsky@oracle.com> for testing and recommending changes for Xen support. x86/apm32: Remove paravirt_enabled() use There is already a check for apm_info.bios == 0, the apm_info.bios is set from the boot_params.apm_bios_info. With this care taken into consideration the paravirt_enabled() check is simply not needed anymore. Signed-off-by: Luis R. Otherwise for all the drivers, the time can be correctly measured. Instead of duplicating the CPUIDLE_FLAG_TIME_VALID flag in all the drivers for all the states, just invert the logic by replacing it by the flag CPUIDLE_FLAG_TIME_INVALID, hence we can set this flag only for the acpi idle driver, remove the former flag from all the drivers and invert the logic with this flag in the different governor. sched/idle, x86: Switch from TS_POLLING to TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG Standardize the idle polling indicator to TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG such that both TIF_NEED_RESCHED and TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG are in the same word. This will allow us, using fetch_or(), to both set NEED_RESCHED and check for POLLING_NRFLAG in a single operation and avoid pointless wakeups. Changing from the non-atomic thread_info::status flags to the atomic thread_info::flags shouldn't be a big issue since most polling state changes were followed/preceded by a full memory barrier anyway. Also, fix up the apm_32 idle function, clearly that was forgotten in the last conversion. The default idle state is !POLLING so just kill the lot. PM / Sleep: Introduce "late suspend" and "early resume" of devices The current device suspend/resume phases during system-wide power transitions appear to be insufficient for some platforms that want to use the same callback routines for saving device states and related operations during runtime suspend/resume as well as during system suspend/resume. In principle, they could point their .suspend_noirq() and .resume_noirq() to the same callback routines as their .runtime_suspend() and .runtime_resume(), respectively, but at least some of them require device interrupts to be enabled while the code in those routines is running. It also makes sense to have device suspend-resume callbacks that will be executed with runtime PM disabled and with device interrupts enabled in case someone needs to run some special code in that context during system-wide power transitions. Apart from this, .suspend_noirq() and .resume_noirq() were introduced as a workaround for drivers using shared interrupts and failing to prevent their interrupt handlers from accessing suspended hardware. It appears to be better not to use them for other porposes, or we may have to deal with some serious confusion (which seems to be happening already). For the above reasons, introduce new device suspend/resume phases, "late suspend" and "early resume" (and analogously for hibernation) whose callback will be executed with runtime PM disabled and with device interrupts enabled and whose callback pointers generally may point to runtime suspend/resume routines. x86 idle APM: deprecate CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE We don't want to export the pm_idle function pointer to modules. Currently CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE w/ CONFIG_APM_MODULE forces us to. CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE is of dubious value, it runs only on 32-bit uniprocessor laptops that are over 10 years old. It calls into the BIOS during idle, and is known to cause a number of machines to fail. Removing CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE and will allow us to stop exporting pm_idle. PM: Drop pm_flags that is not necessary The variable pm_flags is used to prevent APM from being enabled along with ACPI, which would lead to problems. However, acpi_init() is always called before apm_init() and after acpi_init() has returned, it is known whether or not ACPI will be used. Namely, if acpi_disabled is not set after acpi_init() has returned, this means that ACPI is enabled. llseek: automatically add .llseek fop All file_operations should get a .llseek operation so we can make nonseekable_open the default for future file operations without a .llseek pointer. The three cases that we can automatically detect are no_llseek, seq_lseek and default_llseek. For cases where we can we can automatically prove that the file offset is always ignored, we use noop_llseek, which maintains the current behavior of not returning an error from a seek. New drivers should normally not use noop_llseek but instead use no_llseek and call nonseekable_open at open time. Existing drivers can be converted to do the same when the maintainer knows for certain that no user code relies on calling seek on the device file. The generated code is often incorrectly indented and right now contains comments that clarify for each added line why a specific variant was chosen. In the version that gets submitted upstream, the comments will be gone and I will manually fix the indentation, because there does not seem to be a way to do that using coccinelle. Some amount of new code is currently sitting in linux-next that should get the same modifications, which I will do at the end of the merge window. Many thanks to Julia Lawall for helping me learn to write a semantic patch that does all this. ===== begin semantic patch ===== // This adds an llseek= method to all file operations, // as a preparation for making no_llseek the default. // // The rules are // - use no_llseek explicitly if we do nonseekable_open // - use seq_lseek for sequential files // - use default_llseek if we know we access f_pos // - use noop_llseek if we know we don't access f_pos, // but we still want to allow users to call lseek // @ open1 exists @ identifier nested_open; @@ nested_open(...) { <+... nonseekable_open(...) ...+> } @ open exists@ identifier open_f; identifier i, f; identifier open1.nested_open; @@ int open_f(struct inode *i, struct file *f) { <+... PM core: rename suspend and resume functions This patch (as1241) renames a bunch of functions in the PM core. Rather than go through a boring list of name changes, suffice it to say that in the end we have a bunch of pairs of functions: device_resume_noirq dpm_resume_noirq device_resume dpm_resume device_complete dpm_complete device_suspend_noirq dpm_suspend_noirq device_suspend dpm_suspend device_prepare dpm_prepare in which device_X does the X operation on a single device and dpm_X invokes device_X for all devices in the dpm_list. In addition, the old dpm_power_up and device_resume_noirq have been combined into a single function (dpm_resume_noirq). Lastly, dpm_suspend_start and dpm_resume_end are the renamed versions of the former top-level device_suspend and device_resume routines. PM: Rework handling of interrupts during suspend-resume Use the functions introduced in by the previous patch, suspend_device_irqs(), resume_device_irqs() and check_wakeup_irqs(), to rework the handling of interrupts during suspend (hibernation) and resume. Namely, interrupts will only be disabled on the CPU right before suspending sysdevs, while device drivers will be prevented from receiving interrupts, with the help of the new helper function, before their "late" suspend callbacks run (and analogously during resume). In addition, since the device interrups are now disabled before the CPU has turned all interrupts off and the CPU will ACK the interrupts setting the IRQ_PENDING bit for them, check in sysdev_suspend() if any wake-up interrupts are pending and abort suspend if that's the case. Introduce new top level suspend and hibernation callbacks Introduce 'struct pm_ops' and 'struct pm_ext_ops' ('ext' meaning 'extended') representing suspend and hibernation operations for bus types, device classes, device types and device drivers. Modify the PM core to use 'struct pm_ops' and 'struct pm_ext_ops' objects, if defined, instead of the ->suspend(), ->resume(), ->suspend_late(), and ->resume_early() callbacks (the old callbacks will be considered as legacy and gradually phased out). The main purpose of doing this is to separate suspend (aka S2RAM and standby) callbacks from hibernation callbacks in such a way that the new callbacks won't take arguments and the semantics of each of them will be clearly specified. This has been requested for multiple times by many people, including Linus himself, and the reason is that within the current scheme if ->resume() is called, for example, it's difficult to say why it's been called (ie. is it a resume from RAM or from hibernation or a suspend/hibernation failure etc.?). The second purpose is to make the suspend/hibernation callbacks more flexible so that device drivers can handle more than they can within the current scheme. For example, some drivers may need to prevent new children of the device from being registered before their ->suspend() callbacks are executed or they may want to carry out some operations requiring the availability of some other devices, not directly bound via the parent-child relationship, in order to prepare for the execution of ->suspend(), etc. Ultimately, we'd like to stop using the freezing of tasks for suspend and therefore the drivers' suspend/hibernation code will have to take care of the handling of the user space during suspend/hibernation. That, in turn, would be difficult within the current scheme, without the new ->prepare() and ->complete() callbacks. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. fix idle (arch, acpi and apm) and lockdep OK, so 25-mm1 gave a lockdep error which made me look into this. The first thing that I noticed was the horrible mess; the second thing I saw was hacks like: 71e93d15612c61c2e26a169567becf088e71b8ff The problem is that arch idle routines are somewhat inconsitent with their IRQ state handling and instead of fixing _that_, we go paper over the problem. So the thing I've tried to do is set a standard for idle routines and fix them all up to adhere to that. So the rules are: idle routines are entered with IRQs disabled idle routines will exit with IRQs enabled Nearly all already did this in one form or another. Merge the 32 and 64 bit bits so they no longer have different bugs. As for the actual lockdep warning; __sti_mwait() did a plainly un-annotated irq-enable. x86: isolate PIC/PIT in/out calls Rather than remove and/or mangle inb_p/outb_p we want to remove the use of them from inappropriate places. For the PIC/PIT this may eventually depend on 32/64bitism or similar so start by adding inb/outb_pit and inb/outb_pic so that we can make them use any scheme we settle on without disturbing the existing, correct (for ISA), port 0x80 usage. (eg we can make inb_pit use udelay without messing up inb_p). Floppy already does this for the fdc. x86: unify desc_struct This patch aims to make the access of struct desc_struct variables equal across architectures. In this patch, I unify the i386 and x86_64 versions under an anonymous union, keeping the way they are accessed untouched (a and b for 32-bit code, individual bit-fields for 64-bit). This solution is not beautiful, but will allow us to integrate common code that differed by the way descriptors were used. This is to be viewed incrementally. There's simply too much code to be fixed at once. In the future, goal is to set up in a single way of acessing the desc_struct fields. PM: ACPI and APM must not be enabled at the same time ACPI and APM used "pm_active" to guarantee that they would not be simultaneously active. But pm_active was recently moved under CONFIG_PM_LEGACY, so that without CONFIG_PM_LEGACY, pm_active became a NOP -- allowing ACPI and APM to both be simultaneously enabled. This caused unpredictable results, including boot hangs. Further, the code under CONFIG_PM_LEGACY is scheduled for removal. So replace pm_active with pm_flags. pm_flags depends only on CONFIG_PM, which is present for both CONFIG_APM and CONFIG_ACPI. http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9194 Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Rafael J.
