powerpc, workqueue: Use alloc_ordered_workqueue() to create ordered workqueues BACKGROUND ========== When multiple work items are queued to a workqueue, their execution order doesn't match the queueing order. They may get executed in any order and simultaneously. When fully serialized execution - one by one in the queueing order - is needed, an ordered workqueue should be used which can be created with alloc_ordered_workqueue(). However, alloc_ordered_workqueue() was a later addition. Before it, an ordered workqueue could be obtained by creating an UNBOUND workqueue with @max_active==1. This originally was an implementation side-effect which was broken by 4c16bd327c74 ("workqueue: restore WQ_UNBOUND/max_active==1 to be ordered"). Because there were users that depended on the ordered execution, 5c0338c68706 ("workqueue: restore WQ_UNBOUND/max_active==1 to be ordered") made workqueue allocation path to implicitly promote UNBOUND workqueues w/ @max_active==1 to ordered workqueues. While this has worked okay, overloading the UNBOUND allocation interface this way creates other issues. It's difficult to tell whether a given workqueue actually needs to be ordered and users that legitimately want a min concurrency level wq unexpectedly gets an ordered one instead. With planned UNBOUND workqueue updates to improve execution locality and more prevalence of chiplet designs which can benefit from such improvements, this isn't a state we wanna be in forever. This patch series audits all callsites that create an UNBOUND workqueue w/ @max_active==1 and converts them to alloc_ordered_workqueue() as necessary. WHAT TO LOOK FOR ================ The conversions are from alloc_workqueue(WQ_UNBOUND | flags, 1, args..) to alloc_ordered_workqueue(flags, args...) which don't cause any functional changes. If you know that fully ordered execution is not ncessary, please let me know. I'll drop the conversion and instead add a comment noting the fact to reduce confusion while conversion is in progress. If you aren't fully sure, it's completely fine to let the conversion through. The behavior will stay exactly the same and we can always reconsider later. As there are follow-up workqueue core changes, I'd really appreciate if the patch can be routed through the workqueue tree w/ your acks. Thanks. driver core: class: mark the struct class for sysfs callbacks as constant struct class should never be modified in a sysfs callback as there is nothing in the structure to modify, and frankly, the structure is almost never used in a sysfs callback, so mark it as constant to allow struct class to be moved to read-only memory. While we are touching all class sysfs callbacks also mark the attribute as constant as it can not be modified. The bonding code still uses this structure so it can not be removed from the function callbacks. Cc: "David S. Miller" <davem@davemloft.net> Cc: "Rafael J. powerpc/rtas: arch-wide function token lookup conversions With the tokens for all implemented RTAS functions now available via rtas_function_token(), which is optimal and safe for arbitrary contexts, there is no need to use rtas_token() or cache its result. Most conversions are trivial, but a few are worth describing in more detail: * Error injection token comparisons for lockdown purposes are consolidated into a simple predicate: token_is_restricted_errinjct(). * A couple of special cases in block_rtas_call() do not use rtas_token() but perform string comparisons against names in the function table. These are converted to compare against token values instead, which is logically equivalent but less expensive. * The lookup for the ibm,os-term token can be deferred until needed, instead of caching it at boot to avoid device tree traversal during panic. * Since rtas_function_token() accesses a read-only data structure without taking any locks, xmon's lookup of set-indicator can be performed as needed instead of cached at startup. powerpc/pseries/dlpar: handle ibm, configure-connector delay status dlpar_configure_connector() has two problems in its handling of ibm,configure-connector's return status: 1. When the status is -2 (busy, call again), we call ibm,configure-connector again immediately without checking whether to schedule, which can result in monopolizing the CPU. 2. Extended delay status (9900..9905) goes completely unhandled, causing the configuration to unnecessarily terminate. Fix both of these issues by using rtas_busy_delay(). powerpc/pseries: Fix "OF: ERROR: Bad of_node_put() on /cpus" during DLPAR Commit 215ee763f8cb ("powerpc: pseries: remove dlpar_attach_node dependency on full path") reworked dlpar_attach_node() to no longer look up the parent node "/cpus", but instead to have the parent node passed by the caller in the function parameter list. powerpc/pseries: Fix of_node_put() underflow during DLPAR remove Historically struct device_node references were tracked using a kref embedded as a struct field. Commit 75b57ecf9d1d ("of: Make device nodes kobjects so they show up in sysfs") (Mar 2014) refactored device_nodes to be kobjects such that the device tree could by more simply exposed to userspace using sysfs. Commit 0829f6d1f69e ("of: device_node kobject lifecycle fixes") (Mar 2014) followed up these changes to better control the kobject lifecycle and in particular the referecne counting via of_node_get(), of_node_put(), and of_node_init(). A result of this second commit was that it introduced an of_node_put() call when a dynamic node is detached, in of_node_remove(), that removes the initial kobj reference created by of_node_init(). Traditionally as the original dynamic device node user the pseries code had assumed responsibilty for releasing this final reference in its platform specific DLPAR detach code. This patch fixes a refcount underflow introduced by commit 0829f6d1f6, and recently exposed by the upstreaming of the recount API. powerpc/pseries: Correct possible read beyond dlpar sysfs buffer The pasrsing of data written to the dlpar file in sysfs does not correctly account for the possibility of reading past the end of the buffer. The code assumes that all pieces of the command witten to the sysfs file are present in the form "<resource> <action> <id_type> <id>". Correct this by updating the buffer parsing code to make a local copy and use the strsep() and sysfs_streq() routines to parse the buffer. powerpc/pseries: Create new device hotplug entry point The current hotplug (or dlpar) of devices (the process is generally the same for memory, cpu, and pci) on PowerVM systems is initiated from the HMC, which communicates the request to the partitions through the RSCT framework. The RSCT framework then invokes the drmgr command. The drmgr command performs the hotplug operation by doing some pieces, such as most of the rtas calls and device tree parsing, in userspace and make requests to the kernel to online/offline the device, update the device tree and add/remove the device. For PowerKVM the approach for device hotplug is to follow what is currently being done for pci hotplug. A hotplug request is initiated from the host. QEMU then generates an EPOW interrupt to the guest which causes the guest to make the rtas,check-exception call. In QEMU, the rtas,check-exception call returns a rtas hotplug event to the guest. Please note that the current pci hotplug path for PowerKVM involves the kernel receiving the rtas hotplug event, passing it to rtas_errd in userspace, and having rtas_errd invoke drmgr. The drmgr command then handles the request as described above for PowerVM systems. There is no need for this circuitous route, we should just handle the entire hotplug of devices in the kernel. What I am planning is to enable this by moving the code to handle hotplug from drmgr into the kernel to provide a single path for handling device hotplug for both PowerVM and PowerKVM systems. This patch provides the common iframework and entry point. For PowerKVM a future update to the kernel rtas code will recognize rtas hotplug events returned from rtas,check-exception calls and use the common entry point to handle hotplug of the device. For PowerVM systems, This patch creates /sys/kernel/dlpar that can be used by the drmgr command to initiate hotplug requests. In order to do this a string of the format "<resource> <action> <id_type> <id>" is written to this file. The string consists of a resource (cpu, memory, pci, phb), an action (add or remove), an id_type (count, drc index, drc name), and the corresponding id. The kernel will parse the string and create a rtas hotplug section that can be passed to the common entry point for handling hotplug requests. It should be noted that there is no chance of updating how we receive hotplug (dlpar) requests from the HMC on PowerVM systems. powerpc: use device_online/offline() instead of cpu_up/down() In powerpc pseries platform dlpar operations, use device_online() and device_offline() instead of cpu_up() and cpu_down(). Calling cpu_up/down() directly does not update the cpu device offline field, which is used to online/offline a cpu from sysfs. Calling device_online/offline() instead keeps the sysfs cpu online value correct. The hotplug lock, which is required to be held when calling device_online/offline(), is already held when dlpar_online/offline_cpu() are called, since they are called only from cpu_probe|release_store(). This patch fixes errors on phyp (PowerVM) systems that have cpu(s) added/removed using dlpar operations; without this patch, the /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuN/online nodes do not correctly show the online state of added/removed cpus. powerpc/pseries: dynamically added OF nodes need to call of_node_init Commit 75b57ecf9 refactored device tree nodes to use kobjects such that they can be exposed via /sysfs. A secondary commit 0829f6d1f furthered this rework by moving the kobect initialization logic out of of_node_add into its own of_node_init function. The inital commit removed the existing kref_init calls in the pseries dlpar code with the assumption kobject initialization would occur in of_node_add. The second commit had the side effect of triggering a BUG_ON during DLPAR, migration and suspend/resume operations as a result of dynamically added nodes being uninitialized. of: Make device nodes kobjects so they show up in sysfs Device tree nodes are already treated as objects, and we already want to expose them to userspace which is done using the /proc filesystem today. Right now the kernel has to do a lot of work to keep the /proc view in sync with the in-kernel representation. If device_nodes are switched to be kobjects then the device tree code can be a whole lot simpler. It also turns out that switching to using /sysfs from /proc results in smaller code and data size, and the userspace ABI won't change if /proc/device-tree symlinks to /sys/firmware/devicetree/base. v7: Add missing sysfs_bin_attr_init() v6: Add __of_add_property() early init fixes from Pantelis v5: Rename firmware/ofw to firmware/devicetree Fix updating property values in sysfs v4: Fixed build error on Powerpc Fixed handling of dynamic nodes on powerpc v3: Fixed handling of duplicate attribute and child node names v2: switch to using sysfs bin_attributes which solve the problem of reporting incorrect property size. hotplug, powerpc, x86: Remove cpu_hotplug_driver_lock() cpu_hotplug_driver_lock() serializes CPU online/offline operations when ARCH_CPU_PROBE_RELEASE is set. The use of cpu_hotplug_driver_lock() is redundant. - cpu_hotplug_driver_lock() is only valid when ARCH_CPU_PROBE_RELEASE is defined, which is misleading and is only enabled on powerpc. powerpc/pseries/dlpar: Eliminate use after free dlpar_free_cc_nodes frees its argument, so dlpar_online_cpu should not be called on the same value. Skip over the call to dlpar_online_cpu by jumping directly to out. A simplified version of the semantic patch that finds this problem is as follows: (http://coccinelle.lip6.fr/) // <smpl> @@ expression E,E2; @@ dlpar_free_cc_nodes(E) ... include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. powerpc/pseries: Correct pseries/dlpar.c build break without CONFIG_SMP The recent patch to add cpu offline/online as part of the DLPAR process for pseries causes a build break if CONFIG_SMP is not defined. Original patch here; http://lists.ozlabs.org/pipermail/linuxppc-dev/2009-November/078299.html This corrects the build break by moving the online_node_cpus and offline_node_cpus under the #ifdef CONFIG_ARCH_CPU_PROBE_RELEASE portions of dlpar.c. This patch also slightly modifies the online_node_cpus and offline_node_cpus routines to prepend dlpar_ to the them and make them static. These two routine are only used in the dlpar add/remove of cpus and these changes should help clarify that. powerpc/pseries: Serialize cpu hotplug operations during deactivate Vs deallocate Currently the cpu-allocation/deallocation process comprises of two steps: - Set the indicators and to update the device tree with DLPAR node information. - Online/offline the allocated/deallocated CPU. This is achieved by writing to the sysfs tunables "probe" during allocation and "release" during deallocation. At the sametime, the userspace can independently online/offline the CPUs of the system using the sysfs tunable "online". It is quite possible that when a userspace tool offlines a CPU for the purpose of deallocation and is in the process of updating the device tree, some other userspace tool could bring the CPU back online by writing to the "online" sysfs tunable thereby causing the deallocate process to fail. The solution to this is to serialize writes to the "probe/release" sysfs tunable with the writes to the "online" sysfs tunable. This patch employs a mutex to provide this serialization, which is a no-op on all architectures except PPC_PSERIES Signed-off-by: Gautham R Shenoy <ego@in.ibm.com> Acked-by: Vaidyanathan Srinivasan <svaidy@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org>

pseries/pseries: Add code to online/offline CPUs of a DLPAR node Currently the cpu-allocation/deallocation on pSeries is a two step process from the Userspace. - Set the indicators and update the device tree by writing to the sysfs tunable "probe" during allocation and "release" during deallocation. - Online / Offline the CPUs of the allocated/would_be_deallocated node by writing to the sysfs tunable "online". This patch adds kernel code to online/offline the CPUs soon_after/just_before they have been allocated/would_be_deallocated. This way, the userspace tool that performs DLPAR operations would only have to deal with one set of sysfs tunables namely "probe" and release". powerpc/pseries: Kernel DLPAR Infrastructure The Dynamic Logical Partitioning capabilities of the powerpc pseries platform allows for the addition and removal of resources (i.e. CPU's, memory, and PCI devices) from a partition. The removal of a resource involves removing the resource's node from the device tree and then returning the resource to firmware via the rtas set-indicator call. To add a resource, it is first obtained from firmware via the rtas set-indicator call and then a new device tree node is created using the ibm,configure-coinnector rtas call and added to the device tree. This patch provides the kernel DLPAR infrastructure in a new filed named dlpar.c. The functionality provided is for acquiring and releasing a resource from firmware and the parsing of information returned from the ibm,configure-connector rtas call. Additionally this exports the pSeries reconfiguration notifier chain so that it can be invoked when device tree updates are made.
