powerpc: Use a datatype for instructions Currently unsigned ints are used to represent instructions on powerpc. This has worked well as instructions have always been 4 byte words. However, ISA v3.1 introduces some changes to instructions that mean this scheme will no longer work as well. This change is Prefixed Instructions. A prefixed instruction is made up of a word prefix followed by a word suffix to make an 8 byte double word instruction. No matter the endianness of the system the prefix always comes first. Prefixed instructions are only planned for powerpc64. Introduce a ppc_inst type to represent both prefixed and word instructions on powerpc64 while keeping it possible to exclusively have word instructions on powerpc32. powerpc/32: remove a NOP from memset() memset() is patched after initialisation to activate the optimised part which uses cache instructions. Today we have a 'b 2f' to skip the optimised patch, which then gets replaced by a NOP, implying a useless cycle consumption. As we have a 'bne 2f' just before, we could use that instruction for the live patching, hence removing the need to have a dedicated 'b 2f' to be replaced by a NOP. This patch changes the 'bne 2f' by a 'b 2f'. powerpc: Move cpu_has_feature() to a separate file We plan to use jump label for cpu_has_feature(). In order to implement this we need to include the linux/jump_label.h in asm/cputable.h. Unfortunately if we do that it leads to an include loop. The root of the problem seems to be that reg.h needs cputable.h (for CPU_FTRs), and then cputable.h via jump_label.h eventually pulls in hw_irq.h which needs reg.h (for MSR_EE). So move cpu_has_feature() to a separate file on its own. powerpc: Remove unused vgacon_remap_base & fix build break The build is broken with CONFIG_PPC32=y, CONFIG_FB_VGA16=y and CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE=n. The problem is that vgacon_remap_base is not defined. It's used in: #define VGA_MAP_MEM(x,s) (x + vgacon_remap_base) Which is used in the vga16fb.c code. Digging down it seems vgacon_remap_base is never initialised. It used to be, back in arch/ppc (pplus.c and prep_setup.c), but none of that code ever made it to arch/powerpc. So given it's been unused for >6 years, remove it. powerpc/85xx: Move ePAPR paravirt initialization earlier At console init, when the kernel tries to flush the log buffer the ePAPR byte-channel based console write fails silently, losing the buffered messages. This happens because The ePAPR para-virtualization init isn't done early enough so that the hcall instruction to be set, causing the byte-channel write hcall to be a nop. To fix, change the ePAPR para-virt init to use early device tree functions and move it in early init. powerpc/32: Pass device tree address as u64 to machine_init u64 is used rather than phys_addr_t to keep things simple, as this is called from assembly code. Update callers to pass a 64-bit address in r3/r4. Other unused register assignments that were once parameters to machine_init are dropped. For FSL BookE, look up the physical address of the device tree from the effective address passed in r3 by the loader. This is required for situations where memory does not start at zero (due to AMP or IOMMU-less virtualization), and thus the IMA doesn't start at zero, and thus the device tree effective address does not equal the physical address. memblock: Introduce default allocation limit and use it to replace explicit ones This introduce memblock.current_limit which is used to limit allocations from memblock_alloc() or memblock_alloc_base(..., MEMBLOCK_ALLOC_ACCESSIBLE). The old MEMBLOCK_ALLOC_ANYWHERE changes value from 0 to ~(u64)0 and can still be used with memblock_alloc_base() to allocate really anywhere. It is -no-longer- cropped to MEMBLOCK_REAL_LIMIT which disappears. Note to archs: I'm leaving the default limit to MEMBLOCK_ALLOC_ANYWHERE. I strongly recommend that you ensure that you set an appropriate limit during boot in order to guarantee that an memblock_alloc() at any time results in something that is accessible with a simple __va(). The reason is that a subsequent patch will introduce the ability for the array to resize itself by reallocating itself. The MEMBLOCK core will honor the current limit when performing those allocations. Signed-off-by: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org>

powerpc: Add irqtrace support for 32-bit powerpc Based on initial work from: Dale Farnsworth <dale@farnsworth.org> Add the low level irq tracing hooks for 32-bit powerpc needed to enable full lockdep functionality. The approach taken to deal with the code in entry_32.S is that we don't trace all the transitions of MSR:EE when we just turn it off to peek at TI_FLAGS without races. Only when we are calling into C code or returning from exceptions with a state that have changed from what lockdep thinks. There's a little bugger though: If we take an exception that keeps interrupts enabled (such as an alignment exception) while interrupts are enabled, we will call trace_hardirqs_on() on the way back spurriously. Not a big deal, but to get rid of it would require remembering in pt_regs that the exception was one of the type that kept interrupts enabled which we don't know at this stage. We default to 'sync' since that is always safe and if the cpu is capable we will replace 'sync' with 'lwsync'. We introduce CPU_FTR_LWSYNC as a way to determine at runtime if this is needed. [POWERPC] Merge CPU features pertaining to icache coherency Currently the powerpc kernel has a 64-bit only feature, COHERENT_ICACHE used for those CPUS which maintain icache/dcache coherency in hardware (POWER5, essentially). It also has a feature, SPLIT_ID_CACHE, which is used on CPUs which have separate i and d-caches, which is to say everything except 601 and Freescale E200. In nearly all the places we check the SPLIT_ID_CACHE, what we actually care about is whether the i and d-caches are coherent (which they will be, trivially, if they're the same cache). This tries to clarify the situation a little. The COHERENT_ICACHE feature becomes availble on 32-bit and is set for all CPUs where i and d-cache are effectively coherent, whether this is due to special logic (POWER5) or because they're unified. We check this, instead of SPLIT_ID_CACHE nearly everywhere. The SPLIT_ID_CACHE feature itself is replaced by a UNIFIED_ID_CACHE feature with reversed sense, set only on 601 and Freescale E200. In the two places (one Freescale BookE specific) where we really care whether it's a unified cache, not whether they're coherent, we check this feature. The CPUs with unified cache are so few, we could consider replacing this feature bit with explicit checks against the PVR. This will make unifying the 32-bit and 64-bit cache flush code a little more straightforward. Signed-off-by: David Gibson <dwg@au1.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>

A value of 0x0f000001 indicates the partition is in POWER5+ compatibility mode, and a value of 0x0f000002 indicates "POWER6 architected" mode, with various extensions disabled. [POWERPC] Support feature fixups in vdso's This patch reworks the feature fixup mecanism so vdso's can be fixed up. The main issue was that the construct: .long label (or .llong on 64 bits) will not work in the case of a shared library like the vdso. It will generate an empty placeholder in the fixup table along with a reloc, which is not something we can deal with in the vdso. The idea here (thanks Alan Modra !) is to instead use something like: 1: .long label - 1b That is, the feature fixup tables no longer contain addresses of bits of code to patch, but offsets of such code from the fixup table entry itself. That is properly resolved by ld when building the .so's. I've modified the fixup mecanism generically to use that method for the rest of the kernel as well. Another trick is that the 32 bits vDSO included in the 64 bits kernel need to have a table in the 64 bits format. However, gas does not support 32 bits code with a statement of the form: .llong label - 1b (Or even just .llong label) That is, it cannot emit the right fixup/relocation for the linker to use to assign a 32 bits address to an .llong field. Thus, in the specific case of the 32 bits vdso built as part of the 64 bits kernel, we are using a modified macro that generates: .long 0xffffffff .llong label - 1b Note that is assumes that the value is negative which is enforced by the .lds (those offsets are always negative as the .text is always before the fixup table and gas doesn't support emiting the reloc the other way around). While fixing that it struck me that we could move the xmon param handling into xmon.c, and also consolidate the xmon_init()/do_early_xmon logic into xmon_setup(). [POWERPC] Add new interrupt mapping core and change platforms to use it This adds the new irq remapper core and removes the old one. Because there are some fundamental conflicts with the old code, like the value of NO_IRQ which I'm now setting to 0 (as per discussions with Linus), etc..., this commit also changes the relevant platform and driver code over to use the new remapper (so as not to cause difficulties later in bisecting). This patch removes the old pre-parsing of the open firmware interrupt tree along with all the bogus assumptions it made to try to renumber interrupts according to the platform. This is all to be handled by the new code now. For the pSeries XICS interrupt controller, a single remapper host is created for the whole machine regardless of how many interrupt presentation and source controllers are found, and it's set to match any device node that isn't a 8259. That works fine on pSeries and avoids having to deal with some of the complexities of split source controllers vs. presentation controllers in the pSeries device trees. The powerpc i8259 PIC driver now always requests the legacy interrupt range. It also has the feature of being able to match any device node (including NULL) if passed no device node as an input. That will help porting over platforms with broken device-trees like Pegasos who don't have a proper interrupt tree. [PATCH] node hotplug: register cpu: remove node struct With Goto-san's patch, we can add new pgdat/node at runtime. I'm now considering node-hot-add with cpu + memory on ACPI. I found acpi container, which describes node, could evaluate cpu before memory. This means cpu-hot-add occurs before memory hot add. In most part, cpu-hot-add doesn't depend on node hot add. But register_cpu(), which creates symbolic link from node to cpu, requires that node should be onlined before register_cpu(). When a node is onlined, its pgdat should be there. This patch-set holds off creating symbolic link from node to cpu until node is onlined. This removes node arguments from register_cpu(). Now, register_cpu() requires 'struct node' as its argument. But the array of struct node is now unified in driver/base/node.c now (By Goto's node hotplug patch). We can get struct node in generic way. So, this argument is not necessary now. This patch also guarantees add cpu under node only when node is onlined. It is necessary for node-hot-add vs. cpu-hot-add patch following this. Moreover, register_cpu calculates cpu->node_id by cpu_to_node() without regard to its 'struct node *root' argument. This patch removes it. Also modify callers of register_cpu()/unregister_cpu, whose args are changed by register-cpu-remove-node-struct patch. [PATCH] powerpc: merge code values for identifying platforms This patch merges platform codes. systemcfg->platform is no longer used, systemcfg use in general is deprecated as much as possible (and renamed _systemcfg before it gets completely moved elsewhere in a future patch), _machine is now used on ppc64 along as ppc32. Platform codes aren't gone yet but we are getting a step closer. A bunch of asm code in head[_64].S is also turned into C code. powerpc: Simplify and clean up the xmon terminal I/O This factors out the common bits of arch/powerpc/xmon/start_*.c into a new nonstdio.c, and removes some stuff that was supposed to make xmon's I/O routines somewhat stdio-like but was never used. It also makes the parsing of the xmon= command line option common, so that ppc32 can now use xmon={off,on,early} also. Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>

[PATCH] powerpc: Fix ppc32 initrd OK, the Fedora ppc32 and ppc64 kernels should both be arch/powerpc by tomorrow. They're booting on G5, POWER5, and my powerbook. I'll test pmac SMP and Pegasos later -- but pmac smp is known broken in arch/ppc anyway, and I'll live with a potential Pegasos regression for now; it wasn't supported officially in FC4 either. I needed to fix ppc32 initrd -- we were never setting initrd_start. Signed-off-by: David Woodhouse <dwmw2@infradead.org> Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>

powerpc: Merge xmon The merged version follows the ppc64 version pretty closely mostly, and in fact ARCH=ppc64 now uses the arch/powerpc/xmon version. The main difference for ppc64 is that the 'p' command to call show_state (which was always pretty dodgy) has been replaced by the ppc32 'p' command, which calls a given procedure (so in fact the old 'p' command behaviour can be achieved with 'p $show_state'). [PATCH] powerpc: Purge bootinfo.h With ARCH=powerpc we assume the presence of a device tree, so we don't require any support for the old bi_recs method of passing boot parameters. Likewise, we've never needed it for ppc64, but we still had an include/asm-ppc64/bootinfo.h from which nothing was used. This patch removes that file, and all references to it in arch/ppc64 and arch/powerpc. A related, unused variable 'boot_mem_size' is also removed from setup_32.c. The bootinfo stuff remains in ARCH=ppc for the time being. Built and booted on Power5 (ARCH=ppc64 and ARCH=powerpc), built for 32-bit powermac (ARCH=powerpc and ARCH=ppc). powerpc: Merge in 64-bit powermac support. This brings in a lot of changes from arch/ppc64/kernel/pmac_*.c to arch/powerpc/platforms/powermac/*.c and makes various minor tweaks elsewhere. On the powermac we now initialize ppc_md by copying the whole pmac_md structure into it, which required some changes in the ordering of initializations of individual fields of it. powerpc: Initialize btext subsystem later, after prom_init We were initializing the btext stuff from prom_init(), thus breaking the rule that all communication between prom_init() and the rest of the kernel has to be via the flattened device tree. This removes the btext initialization calls from prom_init() and initializes it instead after the device tree is unflattened. It would be nice to do it earlier, but that needs some more infrastructure to find the properties we need in the flattened device tree. Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
