parisc: simplify smp_prepare_boot_cpu() smp_prepare_boot_cpu() reads the cpuid of the first CPU, printing a message to state which processor booted, and setting it online and present. This cpuid is retrieved from per_cpu(cpu_data, 0).cpuid, which is initialised in arch/parisc/kernel/processor.c:processor_probe() thusly: p = &per_cpu(cpu_data, cpuid); ... p->cpuid = cpuid; /* save CPU id */ Consequently, the cpuid retrieved seems to be guaranteed to also be zero, meaning that the message printed in this boils down to: pr_info("SMP: bootstrap CPU ID is 0\n"); Moreover, since kernel/cpu.c::boot_cpu_init() already sets CPU 0 to be present and online, there is no need to do this again in smp_prepare_boot_cpu(). Remove this code, and simplify the printk(). Signed-off-by: Russell King (Oracle) <rmk+kernel@armlinux.org.uk> Signed-off-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de>

profile: setup_profiling_timer() is moslty not implemented The setup_profiling_timer() is mostly un-implemented by many architectures. In many places it isn't guarded by CONFIG_PROFILE which is needed for it to be used. Make it a weak symbol in kernel/profile.c and remove the 'return -EINVAL' implementations from the kenrel. There are a couple of architectures which do return 0 from the setup_profiling_timer() function but they don't seem to do anything else with it. To keep the /proc compatibility for now, leave these for a future update or removal. On ARM, this fixes the following sparse warning: arch/arm/kernel/smp.c:793:5: warning: symbol 'setup_profiling_timer' was not declared. Should it be static? parisc: move CPU field back into thread_info In commit 2214c0e77259 ("parisc: Move thread_info into task struct") PA-RISC gained support for THREAD_INFO_IN_TASK while changes were already underway to keep the CPU field in thread_info rather than move it into task_struct when THREAD_INFO_IN_TASK is enabled. The result is a broken build for all PA-RISC configs that enable SMP. So let's partially revert that commit, and get rid of the ugly hack to get at the offset of task_struct::cpu without having to include linux/sched.h, and put the CPU field back where it was before. sched/core: Initialize the idle task with preemption disabled As pointed out by commit de9b8f5dcbd9 ("sched: Fix crash trying to dequeue/enqueue the idle thread") init_idle() can and will be invoked more than once on the same idle task. At boot time, it is invoked for the boot CPU thread by sched_init(). Then smp_init() creates the threads for all the secondary CPUs and invokes init_idle() on them. As the hotplug machinery brings the secondaries to life, it will issue calls to idle_thread_get(), which itself invokes init_idle() yet again. In this case it's invoked twice more per secondary: at _cpu_up(), and at bringup_cpu(). Given smp_init() already initializes the idle tasks for all *possible* CPUs, no further initialization should be required. Now, removing init_idle() from idle_thread_get() exposes some interesting expectations with regards to the idle task's preempt_count: the secondary startup always issues a preempt_disable(), requiring some reset of the preempt count to 0 between hot-unplug and hotplug, which is currently served by idle_thread_get() -> idle_init(). Given the idle task is supposed to have preemption disabled once and never see it re-enabled, it seems that what we actually want is to initialize its preempt_count to PREEMPT_DISABLED and leave it there. Do that, and remove init_idle() from idle_thread_get(). Secondary startups were patched via coccinelle: @begone@ @@ -preempt_disable(); ... cpu_startup_entry(CPUHP_AP_ONLINE_IDLE); Signed-off-by: Valentin Schneider <valentin.schneider@arm.com> Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@kernel.org> Acked-by: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20210512094636.2958515-1-valentin.schneider@arm.com

mm: remove unneeded includes of <asm/pgalloc.h> Patch series "mm: cleanup usage of <asm/pgalloc.h>" Most architectures have very similar versions of pXd_alloc_one() and pXd_free_one() for intermediate levels of page table. These patches add generic versions of these functions in <asm-generic/pgalloc.h> and enable use of the generic functions where appropriate. In addition, functions declared and defined in <asm/pgalloc.h> headers are used mostly by core mm and early mm initialization in arch and there is no actual reason to have the <asm/pgalloc.h> included all over the place. The first patch in this series removes unneeded includes of <asm/pgalloc.h> In the end it didn't work out as neatly as I hoped and moving pXd_alloc_track() definitions to <asm-generic/pgalloc.h> would require unnecessary changes to arches that have custom page table allocations, so I've decided to move lib/ioremap.c to mm/ and make pgalloc-track.h local to mm/. This patch (of 8): In most cases <asm/pgalloc.h> header is required only for allocations of page table memory. Most of the .c files that include that header do not use symbols declared in <asm/pgalloc.h> and do not require that header. As for the other header files that used to include <asm/pgalloc.h>, it is possible to move that include into the .c file that actually uses symbols from <asm/pgalloc.h> and drop the include from the header file. The process was somewhat automated using sed -i -E '/[<"]asm\/pgalloc\.h/d' \ $(grep -L -w -f /tmp/xx \ $(git grep -E -l '[<"]asm/pgalloc\.h')) where /tmp/xx contains all the symbols defined in arch/*/include/asm/pgalloc.h. mm: don't include asm/pgtable.h if linux/mm.h is already included Patch series "mm: consolidate definitions of page table accessors", v2. The low level page table accessors (pXY_index(), pXY_offset()) are duplicated across all architectures and sometimes more than once. For instance, we have 31 definition of pgd_offset() for 25 supported architectures. Most of these definitions are actually identical and typically it boils down to, e.g. static inline unsigned long pmd_index(unsigned long address) { return (address >> PMD_SHIFT) & (PTRS_PER_PMD - 1); } static inline pmd_t *pmd_offset(pud_t *pud, unsigned long address) { return (pmd_t *)pud_page_vaddr(*pud) + pmd_index(address); } These definitions can be shared among 90% of the arches provided XYZ_SHIFT, PTRS_PER_XYZ and xyz_page_vaddr() are defined. For architectures that really need a custom version there is always possibility to override the generic version with the usual ifdefs magic. These patches introduce include/linux/pgtable.h that replaces include/asm-generic/pgtable.h and add the definitions of the page table accessors to the new header. This patch (of 12): The linux/mm.h header includes <asm/pgtable.h> to allow inlining of the functions involving page table manipulations, e.g. pte_alloc() and pmd_alloc(). So, there is no point to explicitly include <asm/pgtable.h> in the files that include <linux/mm.h>. The include statements in such cases are remove with a simple loop: for f in $(git grep -l "include <linux/mm.h>") ; do sed -i -e '/include <asm\/pgtable.h>/ d' $f done Signed-off-by: Mike Rapoport <rppt@linux.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Cc: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Cc: Borislav Petkov <bp@alien8.de> Cc: Brian Cain <bcain@codeaurora.org> Cc: Catalin Marinas <catalin.marinas@arm.com> Cc: Chris Zankel <chris@zankel.net> Cc: "David S. parisc: delete __cpuinit usage from all users The __cpuinit type of throwaway sections might have made sense some time ago when RAM was more constrained, but now the savings do not offset the cost and complications. For example, the fix in commit 5e427ec2d0 ("x86: Fix bit corruption at CPU resume time") is a good example of the nasty type of bugs that can be created with improper use of the various __init prefixes. After a discussion on LKML[1] it was decided that cpuinit should go the way of devinit and be phased out. Once all the users are gone, we can then finally remove the macros themselves from linux/init.h. This removes all the parisc uses of the __cpuinit macros. include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. cpumask: centralize cpu_online_map and cpu_possible_map Impact: cleanup Each SMP arch defines these themselves. Move them to a central location. Twists: 1) Some archs (m32, parisc, s390) set possible_map to all 1, so we add a CONFIG_INIT_ALL_POSSIBLE for this rather than break them. 2) mips and sparc32 '#define cpu_possible_map phys_cpu_present_map'. Those archs simply have phys_cpu_present_map replaced everywhere. 3) Alpha defined cpu_possible_map to cpu_present_map; this is tricky so I just manipulate them both in sync. 4) IA64, cris and m32r have gratuitous 'extern cpumask_t cpu_possible_map' declarations. [PATCH] Change cpu_up and co from __devinit to __cpuinit Compiling the kernel with CONFIG_HOTPLUG = y and CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU = n with CONFIG_RELOCATABLE = y generates the following modpost warnings WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141b7d) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141b9c) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.text:__cpu_up from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141bd8) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141c05) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141c26) and 'cpu_up' WARNING: vmlinux - Section mismatch: reference to .init.data: from .text between '_cpu_up' (at offset 0xc0141c37) and 'cpu_up' This is because cpu_up, _cpu_up and __cpu_up (in some architectures) are defined as __devinit AND __cpu_up calls some __cpuinit functions. Since __cpuinit would map to __init with this kind of a configuration, we get a .text refering .init.data warning. This patch solves the problem by converting all of __cpu_up, _cpu_up and cpu_up from __devinit to __cpuinit. The approach is justified since the callers of cpu_up are either dependent on CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU or are of __init type. Thus when CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU=y, all these cpu up functions would land up in .text section, and when CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU=n, all these functions would land up in .init section. Tested on a i386 SMP machine running linux-2.6.20-rc3-mm1. [PATCH] more for_each_cpu() conversions When we stop allocating percpu memory for not-possible CPUs we must not touch the percpu data for not-possible CPUs at all. The correct way of doing this is to test cpu_possible() or to use for_each_cpu(). This patch is a kernel-wide sweep of all instances of NR_CPUS. I found very few instances of this bug, if any. But the patch converts lots of open-coded test to use the preferred helper macros. [PARISC] Make sure timer and IPI execute with interrupts disabled Fix a longstanding smp bug The problem is that both the timer and ipi interrupts are being called with interrupts enabled, which isn't what anyone is expecting. The IPI issue has just started to show up by causing a BUG_ON in the slab debugging code. The timer issue never shows up because there's an eiem work around in our irq.c The fix is to label both these as SA_INTERRUPT which causes the generic irq code not to enable interrupts. I also suspect the smp_call_function timeouts we're seeing might be connected with the fact that we disable IPIs when handling any other type of interrupt. I've put a WARN_ON in the code for executing smp_call_function() with IPIs disabled. Signed-off-by: James Bottomley <jejb@parisc-linux.org> Signed-off-by: Kyle McMartin <kyle@parisc-linux.org>

[PATCH] sched: disable preempt in idle tasks Run idle threads with preempt disabled. Also corrected a bugs in arm26's cpu_idle (make it actually call schedule()). How did it ever work before? Might fix the CPU hotplugging hang which Nigel Cunningham noted. We think the bug hits if the idle thread is preempted after checking need_resched() and before going to sleep, then the CPU offlined. After calling stop_machine_run, the CPU eventually returns from preemption and into the idle thread and goes to sleep. The CPU will continue executing previous idle and have no chance to call play_dead. By disabling preemption until we are ready to explicitly schedule, this bug is fixed and the idle threads generally become more robust. Linux-2.6.12-rc2 Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
