mm/slab: rename CONFIG_SLAB to CONFIG_SLAB_DEPRECATED As discussed at LSF/MM [1] [2] and with no objections raised there, deprecate the SLAB allocator. Rename the user-visible option so that users with CONFIG_SLAB=y get a new prompt with explanation during make oldconfig, while make olddefconfig will just switch to SLUB. In all defconfigs with CONFIG_SLAB=y remove the line so those also switch to SLUB. Regressions due to the switch should be reported to linux-mm and slab maintainers. sysctl: Remove the sysctl system call This system call has been deprecated almost since it was introduced, and in a survey of the linux distributions I can no longer find any of them that enable CONFIG_SYSCTL_SYSCALL. The only indication that I can find that anyone might care is that a few of the defconfigs in the kernel enable CONFIG_SYSCTL_SYSCALL. However this appears in only 31 of 414 defconfigs in the kernel, so I suspect this symbols presence is simply because it is harmless to include rather than because it is necessary. As there appear to be no users of the sysctl system call, remove the code. As this removes one of the few uses of the internal kernel mount of proc I hope this allows for even more simplifications of the proc filesystem. MIPS: Make CONFIG_MIPS_MT_SMP default y On systems that support MT ASE multithreading (ie. VPEs) we are very likely to want to include that support as default. Rather than setting it in various defconfigs, simply make CONFIG_MIPS_MT_SMP default y such that systems which select CONFIG_SYS_SUPPORTS_MULTITHREADING get it by default. As well as allowing us to remove the selection of CONFIG_MIPS_MT_SMP from various defconfigs, this also allows the generated generic defconfigs which derive from generic_defconfig to automatically gain support for MT ASE SMP when building for a suitable (pre-MIPSr6) ISA. For malta_kvm_guest_defconfig CONFIG_MIPS_MT_SMP is explicitly disabled since enabling SMP implicitly disables CONFIG_KVM_GUEST, which depends on CONFIG_BROKEN_ON_SMP. MIPS: Malta: CPS SMP by default The CONFIG_MIPS_CPS SMP implementation should be able to handle all cases the CONFIG_MIPS_CMP implementation does, but without requiring bootloader assistance. It is also required in order to make use of features such as hotplug & cpuidle core power gating. Enable it by default for Malta configs that previously enabled the now deprecated CONFIG_MIPS_CMP, and disable the latter. The local version suffix "cmp" is removed rather than replaced with "cps" since there are other ways to tell that the CPS SMP implementation is in use (the "VPE topology" line in the boot log being one). MIPS: Default NR_CPUS=8 for malta SMP defconfigs The previous NR_CPUS=2 default is not an optimal default for current Malta setups where it is common to have more than 2 CPUs available. It makes sense to increase this to a number which covers all common setups currently in use, such that all of those cores are usable. 8 seems to fit that description. If the user has less than 8 CPUs & they wish to have a more optimal kernel they can simply reduce this in their config. It makes sense for the default to work on as many systems as possible.
