mm/slab: rename CONFIG_SLAB to CONFIG_SLAB_DEPRECATED

As discussed at LSF/MM [1] [2] and with no objections raised there,
deprecate the SLAB allocator. Rename the user-visible option so that
users with CONFIG_SLAB=y get a new prompt with explanation during make
oldconfig, while make olddefconfig will just switch to SLUB.

In all defconfigs with CONFIG_SLAB=y remove the line so those also
switch to SLUB. Regressions due to the switch should be reported to
linux-mm and slab maintainers.

MIPS: Malta: Enable BLK_DEV_INITRD

This configuration is useful for boot testing malta_defconfig in QEMU
with just a simple cpio initrd, instead of a full ext4 rootfs.

This results in an increase of ~164KB of vmlinux (with GCC 11.2.0):

$ diskus vmlinux.before
11.19 MB (11,194,368 bytes)

$ diskus vmlinux.after
11.36 MB (11,358,208 bytes)

This size increase comes from the fact that usr/Kconfig is sourced when
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD is enabled, which defaults to supporting several
decompression algorithms for compressed initrds. This seems like a
reasonable tradeoff but these configurations could be disabled in the
future if there are complaints about the size increase.

MIPS: Make CONFIG_MIPS_MT_SMP default y

On systems that support MT ASE multithreading (ie. VPEs) we are very
likely to want to include that support as default. Rather than setting
it in various defconfigs, simply make CONFIG_MIPS_MT_SMP default y such
that systems which select CONFIG_SYS_SUPPORTS_MULTITHREADING get it by
default.

As well as allowing us to remove the selection of CONFIG_MIPS_MT_SMP
from various defconfigs, this also allows the generated generic
defconfigs which derive from generic_defconfig to automatically gain
support for MT ASE SMP when building for a suitable (pre-MIPSr6) ISA.

For malta_kvm_guest_defconfig CONFIG_MIPS_MT_SMP is explicitly disabled

MIPS: malta_defconfig: Convert to use libata PATA drivers

IDE subsystem has been deprecated since 2009 and the majority
(if not all) of Linux distributions have switched to use
libata for ATA support exclusively. However there are still
some users (mostly old or/and embedded non-x86 systems) that
have not converted from using IDE subsystem to libata PATA
drivers. This doesn't seem to be good thing in the long-term

in use:

* testing efforts are divided between two subsystems

* having duplicate drivers for same hardware confuses users

kconfig: rename CONFIG_EMBEDDED to CONFIG_EXPERT

The meaning of CONFIG_EMBEDDED has long since been obsoleted; the option
is used to configure any non-standard kernel with a much larger scope than
only small devices.

This patch renames the option to CONFIG_EXPERT in init/Kconfig and fixes
references to the option throughout the kernel. A new CONFIG_EMBEDDED
option is added that automatically selects CONFIG_EXPERT when enabled and
can be used in the future to isolate options that should only be
considered for embedded systems (RISC architectures, SLOB, etc).

Calling the option "EXPERT" more accurately represents its intention: only
expert users who understand the impact of the configuration changes they

MIPS: Fix and enhance built-in kernel command line

Currently, MIPS kernels silently overwrite kernel command-line parameters
hardcoded in CONFIG_CMDLINE by the ones received from firmware. Therefore,
using firmware remains the only reliable method to transfer the
command-line parameters, which is not always desirable or convenient, and
the CONFIG_CMDLINE option is thereby effectively rendered useless.

This patch fixes the problem described above and introduces a more flexible
scheme of handling the kernel command line, in a manner identical to what is
currently used for x86. The default behavior, i.e. when CONFIG_CMDLINE_BOOL
is not defined, retains the existing semantics, and firmware command-line
arguments override the hardcoded ones.

These haven't seen much attention for too long but particularly important
enable RTC_CLASS and CONFIG_RTC_HCTOSYS so the wall clock time is set on
kernel startup.

# 192cc7f0 25-Nov-2008 Tiejun Chen <tiejun.chen@windriver.com>

MIPS: Malta: Add back RTC support

With the conversion of MIPS to RTC_LIB the old RTC driver CONFIG_RTC became
unselectable. Fix by setting up a platform device. Also enable
RTC_CLASS so system time gets set from RTC on kernel initialization.

The Qemu platform was originally implemented to have an easily supportable
platform until Qemu reaches a state where it emulates a real world system.
Since the latest release Qemu is capable of emulating the MIPSsim and
Malta platforms, so this goal has been reached. The Qemu plaform is also
rather underfeatured so less useful than a Malta emulation.

# 9693a853 02-Feb-2007 Franck Bui-Huu <fbuihuu@gmail.com>

[MIPS] Add basic SMARTMIPS ASE support

This patch adds trivial support for SMARTMIPS extension. This extension
is currently implemented by 4KS[CD] CPUs.

Basically it saves/restores ACX register, which is part of the SMARTMIPS
ASE, when needed. This patch does *not* add any support for Smartmips MMU
features.

Futhermore this patch does not add explicit support for 4KS[CD] CPUs since
they are respectively mips32 and mips32r2 compliant. So with the current
processor configuration, a platform that has such CPUs needs to select
both configs:

CPU_HAS_SMARTMIPS
SYS_HAS_CPU_MIPS32_R[12]

This is due to the processor configuration which is mixing up all the
architecture variants and the processor types.

The drawback of this, is that we currently pass '-march=mips32' option to
gcc when building a kernel instead of '-march=4ksc' for 4KSC case. This
can lead to a kernel image a little bit bigger than required.

Linux-2.6.12-rc2

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.

Let it rip!
