mm/slab: rename CONFIG_SLAB to CONFIG_SLAB_DEPRECATED As discussed at LSF/MM [1] [2] and with no objections raised there, deprecate the SLAB allocator. Rename the user-visible option so that users with CONFIG_SLAB=y get a new prompt with explanation during make oldconfig, while make olddefconfig will just switch to SLUB. In all defconfigs with CONFIG_SLAB=y remove the line so those also switch to SLUB. Regressions due to the switch should be reported to linux-mm and slab maintainers. scsi: sr: remove references to BLK_DEV_SR_VENDOR, leave it enabled This kernel configuration is basically enabling/disabling sr driver quirks detection. While these quirks are for fairly rare devices (very old CD burners, and a glucometer), the additional detection of these models is a very minimal amount of code. The logic behind the quirks is always built into the sr driver. This also removes the config from all the defconfig files that are enabling this already. thermal/drivers/core: Remove the module Kconfig's option The module support for the thermal subsystem makes little sense: - some subsystems relying on it are not modules, thus forcing the framework to be compiled in - it is compiled in for almost every configs, the remaining ones are a few platforms where I don't see why we can not switch the thermal to 'y'. The drivers can stay in tristate. - platforms need the thermal to be ready as soon as possible at boot time in order to mitigate Usually the subsystems framework are compiled-in and the plugs are as module. MIPS: ip27: Disable qlge driver in defconfig One of the last remaining failures in kernelci.org is for a gcc bug: drivers/net/ethernet/qlogic/qlge/qlge_main.c:4819:1: error: insn does not satisfy its constraints: drivers/net/ethernet/qlogic/qlge/qlge_main.c:4819:1: internal compiler error: in extract_constrain_insn, at recog.c:2190 This is apparently broken in gcc-6 but fixed in gcc-7, and I cannot reproduce the problem here. However, it is clear that ip27_defconfig does not actually need this driver as the platform has only PCI-X but not PCIe, and the qlge adapter in turn is PCIe-only. kconfig: rename CONFIG_EMBEDDED to CONFIG_EXPERT The meaning of CONFIG_EMBEDDED has long since been obsoleted; the option is used to configure any non-standard kernel with a much larger scope than only small devices. This patch renames the option to CONFIG_EXPERT in init/Kconfig and fixes references to the option throughout the kernel. A new CONFIG_EMBEDDED option is added that automatically selects CONFIG_EXPERT when enabled and can be used in the future to isolate options that should only be considered for embedded systems (RISC architectures, SLOB, etc). Calling the option "EXPERT" more accurately represents its intention: only expert users who understand the impact of the configuration changes they are making should enable it. MIPS: Fix and enhance built-in kernel command line Currently, MIPS kernels silently overwrite kernel command-line parameters hardcoded in CONFIG_CMDLINE by the ones received from firmware. Therefore, using firmware remains the only reliable method to transfer the command-line parameters, which is not always desirable or convenient, and the CONFIG_CMDLINE option is thereby effectively rendered useless. This patch fixes the problem described above and introduces a more flexible scheme of handling the kernel command line, in a manner identical to what is currently used for x86. The default behavior, i.e. when CONFIG_CMDLINE_BOOL is not defined, retains the existing semantics, and firmware command-line arguments override the hardcoded ones. [MIPS] Add basic SMARTMIPS ASE support This patch adds trivial support for SMARTMIPS extension. This extension is currently implemented by 4KS[CD] CPUs. Basically it saves/restores ACX register, which is part of the SMARTMIPS ASE, when needed. This patch does *not* add any support for Smartmips MMU features. Futhermore this patch does not add explicit support for 4KS[CD] CPUs since they are respectively mips32 and mips32r2 compliant. So with the current processor configuration, a platform that has such CPUs needs to select both configs: CPU_HAS_SMARTMIPS SYS_HAS_CPU_MIPS32_R[12] This is due to the processor configuration which is mixing up all the architecture variants and the processor types. The drawback of this, is that we currently pass '-march=mips32' option to gcc when building a kernel instead of '-march=4ksc' for 4KSC case. This can lead to a kernel image a little bit bigger than required. Signed-off-by: Franck Bui-Huu <fbuihuu@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Ralf Baechle <ralf@linux-mips.org>

Linux-2.6.12-rc2 Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
