# 282417 04-May-2015 jhb

Various updates to the ftruncate(2) documentation:
- Note that ftruncate(2) can operate on shared memory objects and cross
reference shm_open(2).
- Note that ftruncate(2) does not change the file position pointer (aka
seek pointer) of the file descriptor.
- ftruncate(2) will fail with EINVAL for all sorts of other fd types than
just sockets, so instead note that it fails for all but regular files and
shared memory objects.
- Note that ftruncate(2) also appeared in 4.2BSD along with truncate(2).
(Or at least the manpage for both appeared in 4.2, I did not check the
kernel code itself to see if either predated 4.2.)

# 165903 09-Jan-2007 imp

Per Regents of the University of Calfornia letter, remove advertising
clause.

# If I've done so improperly on a file, please let me know.

# 165192 13-Dec-2006 pjd

- truncate(2) returns EFBIG if the length argument was greater than the
maximum file size.
- truncate(2) returns EINVAL if the length argument was less than 0.

# 165051 09-Dec-2006 pjd

If the named file has its immutable or append-only flag set, truncate(2)
and ftruncate(2) return EPERM.

Note, that if the append-only flag is set even increasing size of the file
is not permitted.

# 159141 01-Jun-2006 maxim

o Document the fact truncate(2) has no effect for !VDIR or !VREG files.

mdoc(7) police: "The .Fa argument.".

# 108028 18-Dec-2002 ru

mdoc(7) police: Tidy up the syscall language.

Stop calling system calls "function calls".

Use "The .Fn system call" a-la "The .Nm utility".

When referring to a non-BSD implementation in
the HISTORY section, call syscall a function,
to be safe.

mdoc(7) police: Use the new .In macro for #include statements.

# 59954 04-May-2000 phantom

Use `Er' variable to define first column width in ERRORS section. It was
initially suggested by mdoc(7) style, but was broken over the years

Introduce ".Lb" macro to libc manpages.

More libraries manpages updates following.

# 50476 28-Aug-1999 peter

$Id$ -> $FreeBSD$

# 48794 12-Jul-1999 nik

Add $Id$, to make it simpler for members of the translation teams to
track.

The $Id$ line is normally at the bottom of the main comment block in the
man page, separated from the rest of the manpage by an empty comment,
like so;

.\" $Id$
.\"

If the immediately preceding comment is a @(#) format ID marker than the
the $Id$ will line up underneath it with no intervening blank lines.
Otherwise, an additional blank line is inserted.

# 21570 11-Jan-1997 mpp

Remove the EINVAL error from the ERRORS sections that
say is means that a pathname had the high-order bit
set, since this is no longer an error.

# 17782 22-Aug-1996 mpp

Correctly use .Fn instead of .Nm to reference function names
in a bunch of man pages.

Use the correct .Bx (BSD UNIX) or .At (AT&T UNIX) macros
instead of explicitly specifying the version in the text
in a bunch of man pages.

# 16229 08-Jun-1996 alex

Rephrase some things as suggested by Bruce.

# 16165 07-Jun-1996 alex

Document that truncate can also be used to extend the size of a file,
but doing so is not truly portable.
