hardware revision 1.12
1 $NetBSD: hardware,v 1.12 1998/01/09 18:46:39 perry Exp $ 2 3NetBSD/mac68k _VER runs on several of the older Macintosh computers. 4About 4MB of RAM should be sufficient to boot, and the system can probably 5be squeezed onto a 40MB hard disk by leaving off an unnecessary set or two. 6To actually do much compiling or anything more interesting than booting, at 7least 8MB of RAM and more disk space is recommended. About 75MB will be 8necessary to install all of the NetBSD _VER binary system distribution 9sets (note that this does not count swap space!). An additional 25MB or so 10is needed for the binary X11 distribution sets. Much more disk space is 11required to install the source and objects as well (at least another 300MB). 12 13 14Supported models: 15 16 Mac II, IIx, IIcx, SE/30, IIci, IIsi, IIvx, IIvi, 17 Performa 400/405/410/430, Performa 450, Performa 460/466/467, 18 Performa 520, Performa 550/560, Performa 600, 19 LC II, LC III, LC III+, LC 520, LC 550, 20 MacTV, 21 Centris 650, 22 Quadra 610, Quadra 630, Quadra 650, Quadra 700, Quadra 800, 23 Quadra/Centris 660AV, Quadra 840AV 24 25 26Supported devices on all of the above systems include: 27 28 Onboard SCSI bus and most SCSI tapes, hard drives, and CD-ROMs 29 Internal sound--enough to beep on some machines, anyway 30 Most basic NuBus video cards (there have been some 31 problems with some 24-bit color cards and with most 32 QuickDraw acclerators) 33 Both internal serial ports 34 ADB keyboards and mice (both Apple and a number of third party 35 multi-button mice and trackballs are supported) 36 Ethernet cards based on the National Semiconductor 8390 and the 37 SONIC (DP83932) chips 38 (Asante, Apple, and a few others--problems still 39 with Ethernet and many NuBus video cards) 40 Onboard Ethernet based on the SONIC chip for Quadra-series Macs 41 Onboard Ethernet based on the MACE (Am79C940) chip for the Quadra 42 AV-series Macs 43 Comm-slot Ethernet may be working for some machines/cards 44 45 46If your 68030 system is not listed above, it may be because of a problem 47with accessing onboard video, and it may still work with a serial console. 48Some of the known ones in this category: 49 50 Classic-series Macs 51 PowerBook 100-series and Duo-series Macs 52 53 54If your 68LC040 system is not listed above, it is due to a problem with 55floating point emulation (FPE) for this type of processor. Machines in 56this category include: 57 58 Newer LC-series machines 59 Newer Performa-series machines 60 Some PowerBook 500-series Macs 61 62 63What isn't supported, but often asked about: 64 65 Macintosh IIfx: This machine has unusual custom chips for the 66 ADB and serial interfaces which make support for it 67 difficult. Work is in progress on this, though. 68 Quadra 900/950: These machines have I/O processor chips for their 69 ADB interfaces similar to those used in the IIfx and thus 70 face similar support problems. 71 PowerPC-based Macs: This will be a separate effort from the mac68k 72 port. The PowerPC is a much different processor as is much 73 of the hardware inside these machines. If you are 74 interested in this, you might want to take a look at 75 http://www.mklinux.apple.com/. In addition, there is 76 also a NetBSD-powerpc port. For more information, please 77 see http://www.tools.de/~ws/NetBSD/powerpc.html. 78
