1The mac68k-specific portion of the NetBSD _VER release is found in the 2"mac68k" subdirectory of the distribution. That subdirectory is laid 3out as follows: 4 5.../NetBSD-_VER/mac68k/ 6 SOURCE_DATE the date, in the default format 7 produced by the date(1) command, 8 of the source that the release was 9 built from 10 11 INSTALL these installation notes 12 13 binary/ mac68k system binaries; 14 see below. 15 16 installation/ installation helper items 17 18The NetBSD/mac68k system binaries include the NetBSD/mac68k binary 19distribution sets, additional kernels, and security-related system 20binaries. The NetBSD _VER release for the mac68k port is comprised of 21those files found in the "mac68k/binary/sets" subdirectory of the NetBSD 22_VER distribution tree. There are seven system distribution sets, two 23kernel distribution sets, and five X distribution sets. The files in the 24"sets" subdirectory are as follows: 25 26 CKSUMS checksums for the various files in the "sets" 27 directory, in the default format produced by the 28 cksum(1) command 29 30 base.tgz The NetBSD/mac68k _VER base binary distribution. 31 You MUST install this distribution set. It 32 contains the base NetBSD utilities that are 33 necessary for the system to run and be minimally 34 functional. It includes shared library support, 35 and excludes everything described below. 36 [ 8.6M gzipped, 25.1M uncompressed ] 37 38 comp.tgz The NetBSD/mac68k Compiler tools; all of the tools 39 relating to C and C++. This set includes the 40 system include files (/usr/include), the linker, 41 the compiler tool chain, and the various system 42 libraries (except the shared libraries, which are 43 included as part of the base set). This set also 44 includes the manual pages for all of the utilities 45 it contains, as well as the system call and library 46 manual pages. 47 [ 6.2M gzipped, 21.6M uncompressed ] 48 49 etc.tgz This distribution set contains the system 50 configuration files that reside in /etc and in 51 several other places. This set MUST be installed 52 if you are installing the system from scratch, but 53 should NOT be used if you are upgrading. (If you 54 are upgrading, it's recommended that you get a copy 55 of this set and CAREFULLY upgrade your 56 configuration files by hand.) 57 [ 49K gzipped, 288K uncompressed ] 58 59 games.tgz This set includes the games and their manual pages. 60 [ 2.8M gzipped, 7.2M uncompressed ] 61 62 kern_sbc.tgz 63 kern.tgz The NetBSD/mac68k _VER kernel binary. You MUST 64 install this file. It is the kernel that you need 65 to boot the system. If you experience SCSI-related 66 difficulties with your 68030-based system, you 67 might want to try kern_sbc.tgz instead. 68 [ 606K gzipped, 1.32M uncompressed ] 69 70 man.tgz This set includes all of the manual pages for the 71 binaries and other software contained in the base 72 set. Note that it does not include any of the 73 manual pages that are included in the other sets. 74 [ 2.2M gzipped, 8.8M uncompressed ] 75 76 misc.tgz This set includes the system dictionaries (which 77 are rather large), the typesettable document set, 78 and man pages for other architectures which happen 79 to be installed from the source tree by default. 80 [ 2.1M gzipped, 7.6M uncompressed ] 81 82 text.tgz This set includes NetBSD's text processing tools, 83 including groff, all related programs, and their 84 manual pages. 85 [ 1.0M gzipped, 3.7M uncompressed ] 86 87 xbase.tgz X clients, shared libraries, and related man pages. 88 Also includes bitmaps and miscellaneous 89 configuration files. 90 [ 2.34 M gzipped, 7.46M uncompressed ] 91 92 xcomp.tgz Static libraries, include files (except bitmaps), 93 X config files (for xmkmf), and related man pages. 94 [ 1.57M gzipped, 6.38M uncompressed ] 95 96 xcontrib.tgz User-contributed X binaries (e.g. xev, xload) built 97 from the X11 "contrib" sources with man pages and 98 default config files. 99 [ 178K gzipped, 661K uncompressed ] 100 101 xfont.tgz X11 fonts. 102 [ 5.66M gzipped, 6.99M uncompressed ] 103 104 xserver.tgz The Xmac68k _monochrome_ server with man pages. 105 [ 1.32M gzipped, 3.25M uncompressed ] 106 107The NetBSD/mac68k security distribution set is named "secr.tgz" and can be 108found in the "mac68k/binary/security" subdirectory of the NetBSD _VER 109distribution tree. It contains the crypt libraries (for the DES encryption 110algorithm) and the binaries built from the "src/domestic" portion of the 111NetBSD source tree which depend on it. It can only be found on those sites 112which carry the complete NetBSD distribution and that can legally obtain 113it. (Remember, because of United States law, it may not be legal to 114distribute this set to locations outside of the United States and Canada.) 115[ 779K gzipped, 2.5M uncompressed ] 116 117The mac68k binary distribution sets are distributed as full .tar.gz files 118(with the extension .tgz because the software used to download the sets may 119incorrectly auto-unpack files ending in .gz and to accomodate systems which 120only support 3 character extensions to file names). The instructions 121given for extracting the source sets work equally well for the binary sets, 122but it is worth noting that if you use that method, the files are extracted 123"below" the current directory. That is, if you want to extract the 124binaries "into" your system, i.e. replace the system binaries with them, 125you have to run the "tar xpf" from /. Also note that if you upgrade or 126install this way, those programs that you are using at the time will NOT be 127replaced. If you follow the normal installation or upgrade procedures, 128this will be taken care of for you. 129 130Additional kernels to those included in the distribution sets may be found 131in the "mac68k/binary/kernels" subdirectory of the NetBSD _VER distribution 132tree. These kernels are generally named something like "netbsd-GENERIC.gz" 133or some other suitable name. Please note that these kernels are simply 134gzipped and are not in tar archives. A CKSUM file is included in this 135directory as well. 136 137The MacOS-based utilities necessary for installing and running NetBSD can 138be found in the "mac68k/installation/misc" subdirectory of the NetBSD 139_VER distribution tree. The important files in this directory are as 140follows: 141 142 Booter.sea.hqx The NetBSD/Mac68k Booter utility. This 143 program is used to boot the NetBSD kernel 144 from within MacOS. 145 [ 141 K archived ] 146 147 Installer.sea.hqx The NetBSD/Mac68k Installer utility. This 148 program is used to install the distribution 149 sets onto your NetBSD partition(s). 150 [ 147 K archived ] 151 152 Mkfs.sea.hqx The Mkfs utility. This program is used to 153 format your chosen partitions so that they 154 can be used with NetBSD. 155 [ 76 K archived ] 156 157These files are all binhexed, self-extracting archives. If you need them, 158the sources for these utilities are in the "src" subdirectory. 159
