UPDATING revision 61892
1Updating Information for FreeBSD current users 2 3This file is maintained by imp@village.org. Please send new entries 4directly to him. See end of file for further details. For commonly 5done items, please see the end of the file. Search for 'COMMON 6ITEMS:' 7 820000620: 9 Binutils 2.10 have hit the tree, or will shortly. As soon 10 as they do, the problem noted in 20000522 will be resolved and 11 that workaround will no longer be required. 12 1320000615: 14 phk removed the compatibility creation of wd devices in the 15 ad driver. If you haven't done so already, you must update 16 your fstab, etc to use the ad devices instead of the wd 17 devices. 18 19 In addition, you'll need to update your boot blocks to a 20 more modern version, if you haven't already done so. Modern 21 here means 4.0 release or newer (although older releases 22 may work). 23 2420000612: 25 Peter took an axe to config(8). Besure that you read his mail 26 on the topic before even thinking about updating. You will 27 need to create a /boot/devices.hints or add a hints directive 28 to your config file to compile them in statically. The format 29 of the config file has changed as well. Please see LINT, 30 GENERIC or NEWCARD for examples of the new format. 31 32 More details to follow. A better howto would be warmly 33 accepted by the author of UPDATING. 34 3520000606: 36 Kernel debug symbols now occupy core space on the intel port. 37 This may change the amount of available memory after booting 38 newer kernels. 39 4020000522: 41 A new set of binutils went into the tree today. Anybody 42 building a kernel after this point is advised that they need 43 to rebuild their binutils (or better yet do a 44 buildworld/installworld) before building a new kernel. 45 46 Due to bugs in binutils, using malloc options (eg /etc/malloc.conf 47 or MALLOC_OPTIONS env var) J will cause ld to dump core. It 48 is recommended that you don't set this option until the problem 49 is resolved. 50 5120000513: 52 The ethernet drivers were all updated to clean up the BPF handling. 53 5420000510: 55 The problems with boot blocks on the alphas have been corrected. 56 This will require some care in updating alphas. A new libstand 57 is requires for the boot blocks to build properly. 58 5920000503: 60 Recompile all kld modules. Proper version dependency info 61 is now available. 62 6320000502: 64 Modules have been disconnected from the buildworld tree and 65 connected to the kernel building instead. 66 672000427: 68 You may need to build gperf 69 cd /usr/src/gnu/usr.bin/gperf && make depend all install 70 when upgrading from 4.0 -> current. The build system now uses 71 an option only in -current. 72 7320000417: 74 The method that we brand ELF binaries has changed to be more 75 acceptible to the binutils maintainers. You will need to 76 rebrand your ELF binaries that aren't native. One problem 77 binary is the Linux ldconfig. After your make world, but 78 before you reboot, you'll neeed to issue: 79 brandelf -t Linux /compat/linux/sbin/ldconfig 80 if you have Linux compatibility enabled on your machine. 81 8220000320: 83 If you have really bad/marginal IDE drives, you may find they 84 don't work well. Use pio mode instead. The easiest way to 85 cope if you have a problem combination is to add: 86 /sbin/sysctl -w hw.atamodes=pio, pio, pio, pio 87 to the start of /etc/rc.conf. 88 8920000319: 90 The ISA and PCI compatability shims have been connected to the 91 options COMPAT_OLDISA and COMPAT_OLDPCI. If you are using old 92 style PCI or ISA drivers (i.e. tx, voxware, etc.) you must 93 include the appropriate option in your kernel config. Drivers 94 using the shims should be updated or they won't ship with 95 5.0-RELEASE, targeted for 2001. 96 9720000318: 98 We've entered the tradtional post release dumping party. 99 Large kernel changes are being committed and are in the 100 works. It is important to keep the systems' klds and kernel 101 in sync as kernel interfaces and structures are changing. 102 Before reporting kernel panics, make sure that all modules 103 that you are loading are up to date. 104 10520000315: 106 If you are upgrading from an older version of FreeBSD, you 107 need to update your boot blocks as well. 'disklabel -B ad0' 108 will do the trick. This isn't critical until you remove your 109 wd device entries in /dev, at which point your system will not 110 boot. 111 11220000315: 113 4.0 RELEASE shipped. Please see the 4.0 UPDATING file for how 114 to upgrade to 4.0 from 3.x. 115 116COMMON ITEMS: 117 118 To build a kernel 119 ----------------- 120 Update config, genassym and go: 121 config YOUR_KERNEL_HERE [1] 122 cd ../../compile/YOUR_KERNEL_HERE 123 make depend && make 124 make install 125 [1] If upgrading, add -r won't hurt and sometimes helps. 126 127 To rebuild everything 128 --------------------- 129 make world 130 131 To upgrade from 4.0-stable to current 132 ------------------------------------- 133 make buildworld 134 make buildkernel KERNEL=YOUR_KERNEL_HERE 135 make installkernel KERNEL=YOUR_KERNEL_HERE 136 make installworld 137 <reboot> 138 139 Make sure that you've read the UPDATING file to understand 140 the tweaks to various things you need. At this point in the 141 life cycloe of current, things change often and you are on 142 your own to cope. 143 144FORMAT: 145 146This file contains a list, in reverse chronologocal order, of major 147breakages in tracking -current. Not all things will be listed here, 148and it only starts on March 15, 2000. Updating files can found in 149previous releases if your system is older than this. 150 151Please filter your entries through Warner Losh (imp@village.org) so 152that the style, formatting, etc of this file can be maintained. 153 154$FreeBSD: head/UPDATING 61892 2000-06-21 07:09:22Z imp $ 155
