36
2.17
exit
—end program execution

37
38
Synopsis
39
     #include <stdlib.h>
40     void exit(int <var>code</var>);
41
42

43
Description
44Use
exit
to return control from a program to the host operating
45environment. Use the argument <var>code</var> to pass an exit status to the
46operating environment: two particular values,
EXIT_SUCCESS
and
47
EXIT_FAILURE
, are defined in `
stdlib.h
' to indicate success or
48failure in a portable fashion.
49
50

exit
does two kinds of cleanup before ending execution of your
51program. First, it calls all application-defined cleanup functions
52you have enrolled with
atexit
. Second, files and streams are
53cleaned up: any pending output is delivered to the host system, each
54open file or stream is closed, and files created by
tmpfile
are
55deleted.
56
57

58Returns
59
exit
does not return to its caller.
60
61

62Portability
63ANSI C requires
exit
, and specifies that
EXIT_SUCCESS
and
64
EXIT_FAILURE
must be defined.
65
66
Supporting OS subroutines required:
_exit
.
