2 The following typographical conventions are used in this guide:

4      A command, typed by the user, and its output.  The
5      <span class="quote">&#8220;<span class="quote"><code class="literal">&gt;</code></span>&#8221;</span> character is 
6      the command prompt.

8      The name of a program, when used in a sentence, rather than
9      in literal input or output.
10     </p></dd><dt><span class="term"><code class="literal">literal</code></span></dt><dd><p>
11      Text provided to or received from a computer program.
12     </p></dd><dt><span class="term"><em class="replaceable"><code>placeholder</code></em></span></dt><dd><p>
13      Text that should be replaced with an appropriate value when 
14      typing a command.
15     </p></dd><dt><span class="term"><code class="literal">\</code></span></dt><dd><p>
16      At the end of a line in command or program examples, indicates
17      that a long line of literal input or output continues onto the 
18      next line in the document.
