10.60.0
2
3 Note:
4
5	For this release I have bumped the version number to 0.60.0. This
6	reflects the fact that this release is intended to form a new stable
7	BusyBox release series. If you need to rely on a stable version of
8	BusyBox, you should plan on using the stable 0.60.x series. If bugs
9	show up then I will release 0.60.1, then 0.60.2, etc... This is also
10	intended to deal with the fact that the BusyBox build system will be
11	getting a major overhaul for the next release and I don't want that to
12	break products that people are shipping. To avoid that, the new build
13	system will be released as part of a new BusyBox development series
14	that will have some not-yet-decided-on odd version number. Once things
15	stabablize and the new build system is working for everyone, then I
16	will release that as a new stable release series.
17

46 now automagicaly disabled).
47 -- various things (cleanups, libc compatibility work, etc, etc)
48	* Jim Gleason <jimg@lineo.com>
49 -- Fixed for sed, where it failed to preserve whether or not the
50 line was previously altered when running a subst command.

72 but needs more testing.
73 -- Updates to archiving tools (gunzip/gzip/cpio/ar/etc)
74 -- Rewrote uuencode, will allow base64 encoding to be used by wget
75	* Vladimir Oleynik

419	* Many apps ported to use getopt()
420	* Common handling of '--help'
421	* All usage messages centralized.
422	* Added a bunch of new commands:
423 * 'rdate' contributed by Sterling Huxley <sterling@europa.com>
424 * 'wget' contributed by Chip Rosenthal <chip@unicom.com>,
425 <crosenth@covad.com> and Covad Communications
426 * 'getopt' from "Alfred M. Szmidt" <ams@trillian.itslinux.org>
427 * dos2unix, unix2dos, reset, and unrpm.c (and lots of help
428 debugging) thanks to Kent Robotti <robotti@metconnect.com>.
429 * 'renice' command, thanks to Dave Cinege <dcinege@psychosis.com>
430 * 'xargs' (written by me)
431 * 'expr' contributed by Edward Betts <edward@debian.org>, based
432 on GNY expr
433	* lsmod now uses the query_module syscall, rather then /proc (me)
434	* syslogd can now log messages to remote hosts -- patch thanks
435 to Gyepi Sam <gyepi@praxis-sw.com>
436	* chroot can now call the builtin shell - Pavel Roskin <proski@gnu.org>
437	* 'make install' now creates relative symlinks, and added a new
438 'make install-hardlinks' target to (tada) install hardlinks.
439	* Rewrite of 'tail' to make it simpler, smaller, and more robust.
440 It now weighs only 2.25k (3k when full featured). The code is
441 cleaner too, thanks to Allen Soard <esp-software@mail.hypermart.net>
442	* Add optional ls file sorting, thanks to a patch from
443 Sterling Huxley <sterling@europa.com>
444	* Fixed chmod option parsing so things like 'chmod -r /tmp/file'
445 now work (previously it thought -r was an option). Doh!
446	* Fixed tar handling of stdin and stdout
447	* Renamed "internal.h" to the more sensible "busybox.h"
448	* Preliminary support for GNU HURD.
449	* Updated my devps and devmtab kernel patches for the latest 2.2.x
450 kernel, for those wanting to go proc-less.
451	* Tons of other bugfixes.

459	* Better portability. Now should compile cleanly with libc5,
460 GNU libc 2.0 and 2.1, and various Linux kernels including
461 2.0.x, 2.2.x, and to 2.4.0-test*. (patch for 2.4.x kernels
462 to make /proc/mounts behave included in the kernel-patches dir).
463	* Fixed a _horrible_ bug where 'tar -tvf' could unlink
464 local files that matched tarball contents!!! Fix thanks
465 to Marius Groeger <mgroeger@sysgo.de>
466	* Fixed a nasty bug in tar when could mess up saved symlinks.
467	* Fixed tar creation support when reading from stdin ('tar -cf - . ')
468 thanks to Daniel Quinlan <quinlan@transmeta.com>
469	* Updates to handle Linux 2.4.0 kernels (kludged around the
470 "none" entries in /proc/mounts, added a hack to make sysinfo
471 work with both old and new kernels).
472	* Fixed insmod module option parsing for options lacking an '='.
473 Fix thanks to Marc Nijdam <marc_nijdam@hp.com>
474	* Fixed segfault with 'cut -f 1 -d:' and added 'cut -s' suport.
475 Fix thanks to Arne Bernin <arne@matrix.loopback.org>
476	* Several fixes from Marius Groeger <mag@sysgo.de>
477 - Added support for "sh -c command args..."
478 - Fixed globbing, i.e. 'echo * *' and 'echo "******"' now work.
479 - Added shell environment variable substitution
480 - Added the "read" shell builtin.
481	* Fixed cursor editing in cmdedit.c. The following keyboard sequence
482 used to create an infinite loop: ls, cursor up, left, down.
483	* Added support for being a login shell, so things like
484 '-su' or '-sh' (stuff where argv[0][0]=='-') will now always
485 invoke the shell. Now you can use BusyBox as a login shell.
486	* ls.c now ignores '-g', since some ftp clients like that sort
487 of thing. Patch thanks to David Vrabel <dvrabel@arcom.co.uk>
488	* Fix to init.c from Stuart Menefy <Stuart.Menefy@st.com> so that
489 it always sets the controlling terminal before running any programs
490	* Several fixes from Matt Kraai <kraai@alumni.carnegiemellon.edu>
491 - Fixed tr so it recognizes standard escape sequences.
492 Merged common escape seq. code from tr and echo into utility.c.
493 - Major work in updating/cleaning up the docs, and getting the
494 new SGML based docs into shape.
495 - cleanup of ar.c
496 - BusyBox should now poweroff when asked to do so.
497 - Fixed 'ln -n' and 'ln -s' so they both work properly.
498	* Reorganized signal names in kill.c for better architecture support
499 -- patch thanks to simon wood <simon@mungewell.uklinux.net>
500	* In 0.43, backspace and delete worked properly, but with 0.45,
501 it just echoed a ^? for backspace, and ^H for control-h. This
502 was due to a broken macro in init.c, that is now fixed.
503	* Removed sfdisk from BusyBox. It was buggy, fat, and we really
504 couldn't maintain it very well, so including it was not really
505 very appropriate. Those wanting an fdisk are invited to
506 grab a copy from util-linux.
507	* Added 'dumpkmap' to allow people to dump a binary keymap, which can
508 then be loaded in by 'loadkmap' -- submitted by
509 Arne Bernin <arne@matrix.loopback.org>
510	* Fixed NFS so it supports 2.4.x kernels and NFSv3.
511	* Brand, new versions of grep and sed which use libc regex routines,
512 thanks to Mark Whitley <markw@lineo.com>. The hand-tooled
513 "regexp.[ch]" files have been removed. Much help on these from
514 Matt Kraai as well.

519
5200.45
521	* Now compiles vs libc5 (which can save lots of space for
522 embedded systems).
523	* Added BB_FEATURE_TRIVIAL_HELP which compiles out most all of the
524 help messages (i.e --help). Saves 17k over a full compile.
525	* Added cut and tr from minix, since due to the license change,
526 we can now use minix code. Minix tr saves 4k.
527	* insmod now works. It costs 29k, but imagine an initrd with a
528 staticly linked busybox containing only insmod and sh, a few /dev
529 entries, and a kernel module or two... It doesn't get smaller
530 then this folks (I pity the fool that writes insmod in asm ;-).
531 Many kudos go to Ron Alder <alder@lineo.com> for finishing this off!
532	* Added a mini ar archive utility, especially written for BusyBox by
533 Glenn McGrath <bug1@netconnect.com.au>
534	* Added mktemp, contributed by Daniel Jacobowitz <dan@debian.org>
535	* Added setkeycodes, for those that have wierd keyboard buttons.
536	* Added md5sum, uuencode and uudecode -- thanks to Alfred M. Szmidt
537 <ams@trillian.itslinux.org> for contributing these.
538 * Added 'grep -v' option (inverted search) and updated
539 docs accordingly. -beppu
540	* Wrote which
541	* Replaced the telnet implementation with one written by
542 Tomi Ollila <too@iki.fi> It works great and costs 3k.
543	* BusyBox sh (lash) now supports being used as a standalone shell. When
544 BB_FEATURE_SH_STANDALONE_SHELL is defined, all the busybox commands may
545 be invoked as shell internals. Best used when compiling staticly
546 (i.e. DOSTATIC=true)
547	* BusyBox sh (lash) internals now behave as expected wrt pipes
548 and redirects.
549	* Fixed ping warnings -- fix from Sascha Ziemann <szi@aibon.ping.de>
550	* Fixed update segfault
551	* Fixed mknod -- minor number was always 0
552	* Fixed tar option parsing, so both "tar xvf foo.tar" and
553 "tar -xvf foo.tar" now work (i.e. no "-" before options)
554 (this was very broken in 0.43).
555	* Several contributions from Randolph Chung <tausq@debian.org>.
556 * cp/mv now accepts the -f flag
557 * tail can now accept -<num> commands (e.g. -10) for better
558 compatibility with the standard tail command
559 * added a simple id implementation; doesn't support sup. groups yet
560	* logname used getlogin(3) which uses utmp. Now it doesn't.
561	* whoami used getpwuid(3) which uses libc NSS. Now it behaves.
562	* Add support for "noatime" and "nodiratime" mount flags to mount.
563	* Changed 'umount -f' to mean force, and actually use umount2.
564	* Changed 'umount -l' to mean "Do not free loop device".
565	* Fixed basename to support stripping of suffixes. Patch thanks
566 to xiong jianxin <jxiong@uiuc.edu>
567	* cp -fa now works as expected for symlinks (it didn't before)
568	* zcat now works (wasn't working since option parsing was broken)
569	* Renamed "mnc" to the more correct "nc" (for netcat).
570	* Makefile intelligence updates
571	* Changed the way init parses /etc/inittab entries to avoid problems
572 with commands that contain colons in them. Fix thanks to
573 Pavel Roskin <proski@gnu.org>
574	* Fixed a warning in utility.c due to char being unsigned on Linux/PPC,
575 Fix thanks to Pavel Roskin <proski@gnu.org>
576	* Made "killall" complain (not error and exit) about processes that it
577 cannot find by name -- Pavel Roskin <proski@gnu.org>
578	* Fixed more and ps to have sensible terminal width defaults, thanks
579 to Pavel Roskin.
580	* Fixed all fatalError() calls lacking a "\n", thanks to Pavel Roskin.
581	* Fixed a segfault in yes when no args were given -- Pavel Roskin.
582	* Simplified freeramdisk and added argument checking -- Pavel Roskin.
583	* Fixed segfault caused by "touch -c"
584	* Fixed segfault caused by "rm -f"
585	* Fixed segfault caused by "ln -s -s" and similar abuses. Further fixes
586 and "--" support from Pavel Roskin.
587	* Fixed segfault caused by "cp -a -a" and similar abuses.
588	* Implemented "rm -- <foo>". Implementation fixed by Pavel Roskin.
589	* "which" rewritten to use stat(). Fixes to improve its compatability
590 with traditional implementations -- Pavel Roskin.
591	* "mount" now reports errors from nfsmount() and assumes NFS mount
592 if ':' is present in the device name - Pavel Roskin
593	* Fixed exit status for killall - Pavel Roskin
594	* Fixed 'swapon -a' and 'swapoff -a', which were broken.
595	* Fixed 'mount -a' so it works as expected.
596	* Implemented 'ls -R' (enabled by enabling BB_FEATURE_LS_RECURSIVE)
597	* Implemented "ping -s", fixed error messages and argument parsing -
598 Pavel Roskin
599	* Syslogd will not go to background if "-n" is given. Better help
600 and argument checking -- Pavel Roskin
601	* Fixed a small bug that could cause tar to emit warning messages
602 and not extract the first file in a directory in some cases
603 of nested directories. Thanks to Kevin Traas <kevin@netmaster.com>
604 for helping track this one down.
605	* More doc updates
606	* Fixed grep "Line too long" problem -- John Beppu
607	* Fixed 'grep -q -i B some_file' so it works
608	* math takes input from stdin if no args are given. -- John Beppu
609	* math was renamed to dc. Although it deviates from dc's behaviour,
610 this will probably be remedied in the future. -- John Beppu

623
6240.43
625	* Major update to the provided documentation.
626	* Busybox now includes a shell! It currently costs 7.5 k (plus an
627 additional 2.5 k if you compile in command line editing). Handles
628 job control, has the usual set of builtins, and does everything
629 except for handling programming statements (if, while, etc...)
630	* Busybox can now work perfectly when /proc is disabled, thereby
631 saving a bunch of memory (kernel /proc support is not thin). This
632 is done by making use of some nice kernel patches I wrote up to
633 support the features that busybox requires and that /proc usually
634 provides. To enable this, turn on BB_FEATURE_USE_DEVPS_PATCH and
635 patch your kernel with the devps patch in the kernel-patches/
636 directory.
637	* Wrote basename, dirname, killall, and uptime.
638	* tar has been completely rewritten by me. Both tar creation and
639 extraction are now well behaved. Costs 7.6k with all optional
640 tar features enabled, and 5k for just tar extraction support.
641	* Added freeramdisk, which will free up all memory associated
642 with a ram disk. Contributed by Emanuele Caratti <wiz@iol.it>
643 and then adjusted a bit by me.
644	* Added tr from John Lombardo <john@deltanet.com>
645	* Added echo and test (from me).
646	* Added usleep contributed by Nicolas Pitre <nico@cam.org>
647	* BusyBox's bss size has been majorly reduced (was 384668, is now 28740).
648	* Several fixes from Pavel Roskin <proski@gnu.org>:
649 - When `tail' fails to open a file it now exits.
650 - When `syslogd' is given the `-n' option it should still use
651		fork() for running klogd.
652	* nslookup types are now changed to u_int32_t (instead of uint32_t)
653 changed per a patch from Pascal Bellard <pascal.bellard@ascend.com>
654	* Fixed "du" so it gives the same answers as GNU "du" (busybox du used
655 to count hard-linked files more then once). Many thanks to
656 Friedrich Vedder <fwv@myrtle.lahn.de> for the fix.
657	* Removed /proc dependancies for init and free (while maintaining
658 exactly the same functionality). /proc takes up 90k of kernel
659 space, so it is nice to avoid using it at all costs.
660	* init no longer tries to mount /proc (unless there is less the 1 meg
661 free). Use of /proc (or not) is policy that should be set up in
662 /etc/fstab (or in hardcoded scripts), not in init.
663	* Fixed rebooting when init runs as an initrd.
664	* Fixes and updates from Karl M. Hegbloom <karlheg@debian.org>
665 - update.c rewritten to look more like update-2.11
666 - moveed the inode hash out of du.c and into utility.c to make
667 it a common resource that can be used by other apps.
668 - cp_mv.c now checks inodes to see if a source and dest are
669 the same, and prints an error (instead of endlessly looping).
670 - mv now attempts to do a rename, and will fall back to doing
671 a copy only if the rename fails.
672 - Syslogd now supports multiple concurrent connections
673	* Several fixes from Pavel Roskin <proski@gnu.org>:
674 - Fixes to sort. Removed "-g", fixed and added "-r"
675 - Fixes to the makefile for handling "strip"
676	* An initial telnet implementation was added by
677 Randolph Chung <tausq@debian.org>.
678	* Fixed a bug where "sed 's/foo/bar/g'" (i.e. a script w/o a "-e")
679	* ps now supports BB_FEATURE_AUTOWIDTH, and can adjust its width
680 to match the terminal (defaults to width=79 when this is off).
681	* ps now accepts (and ignores) all options except for "--help" (which
682 as would be expected displays help).
683	* Fixed mount'ing loop devices when the filesystem type was not
684 specified. It used to revert to non-loop after the first try.
685	* all mallocs now use xmalloc (and so are OOM error safe), and
686 the common error handling saves a few bytes. Thanks to
687 Bob Tinsley <bob@earthrise.demon.co.uk> for the patch.
688	* Fix "+" parsing bug in date, from "Merle F. McClelland" <mfm@cts.com>.
689	* Fix symlink following bug in chmod -R and friends.
690	* Now allows SYSV style 'chown foo:bar' in addition to 'chown foo.bar'
691	* Fixed a bug in the busybox globbing routine such that 'find /dir -name [i]'
692 no longer segfaults.

6980.42
699
700 * Fairly massive restructuring of umount.c to deal with remounting
701 busy devices read-only. Adds a -r option to control that; it is
702 optionally compiled in with BB_FEATURE_REMOUNT
703	* Added a bunch of functions to mtab.c to interact with the
704 {get, set, end}mntent interface; as it turns out, those functions do
705 not appear to be re-entrant, and that causes a lot of problems with
706 the way umount was originally written.
707	* Makes init send TERM and KILL (instead of HUP and KILL) on reboot
708 to be more consistent with sysvinit
709	* Changes to init.c to use the new -r option to umount. Also increased
710 the sleep time between the time the TERM and KILL signals are sent
711
712 - Randolph Chung
713
714
715	* cp.c, mv.c: removed, replaced by cp_mv.c which has been
716 extensively rewritten from the original cp.c.
717	* Fixed cp and mv so if the source and destination are a the
718 same directory it will print an error and continue.
719	* Also added a warning message to the `mv' usage string saying that
720 this is not GNU mv, and it will break hard links. cp also breaks
721 hard links.
722	* ln.c: implemented `-n' switch, no-deref symlinks.
723	* include<sys/param.h>: and use PATH_MAX everywhere. busybox: File
724	* name buffer overrun guards to prevent future crashes.
725 - Always check exit status.
726 - Purge all use of `creat()', replace with `open()'.
727	* utility.c
728 - recursiveAction was overriding the value of followLinks thus
729 ignoring it.
730 - isDirectory now takes a followLinks boolean, updated all callers
731 - copyFile had the followLinks logic reversed.
732	* messages.c: New file. Put common error message strings all in
733 one place in an attempt to shrink the binary a little.
734
735	-Karl M. Hegbloom
736
737
738	* changed fsck_minix.c to reduce its .bss size significantly
739 -beppu -piptigger
740	* Made tar creation support in busybox tar optional. You no longer
741	* _have_ to put a "-" in front of tar options. Tar could inadvertently
742	* change permissions and ownership on
743 certain directories pointed to by symlinks.
744	* Made grep and grep -h do the right thing wrt printing
745 the file name (it failed to print files names in many cases).
746	* Fix a namespace aliasing problem wereby if du was built in, the
747 symlink for both du and dutmp would be installed, or then rm was
748 built in, the symlinks for both rm and rmmod would be installed.
749	* Added a closelog() to init.c after loging -- fix thanks to
750 Taketoshi Sano <kgh12351@nifty.ne.jp>
751	* Rewrote and simplified logger. Added the "-t" option, and made it
752 behave itself a bit better.
753	* Optional support contributed by Ben Collins <bcollins@debian.org>
754 for the kernel init chroot patch by Werner Almesberger, which
755 allows init to chroot to a new device, and umount the old one.
756	* Fixed bug that wouldn't let one chown a symlink -- it would
757 always dereference before. -beppu
758	* Fixed a bug where init could have reference already freed memory.
759 Found and fixed by Taketoshi Sano <kgh12351@nifty.ne.jp>
760	* Several contributions from Friedrich Vedder <fwv@myrtle.lahn.de>
761	* Added (and documented) "-n" option for head
762	* Cleanup for a number of usage messages -- also
763 contributed Friedrich Vedder <fwv@myrtle.lahn.de>
764	* Cosmetic fix to busybox.c (Don't print a comma at the
765 end of line if there are no more application names).
766	* Fixed a stupid bug in "head" option handling ("head -n"
767 would segfault).
768	* Moved commonly used functions "xmalloc()" and "exit()"
769 to utility.c (with proper #ifdef's).
770	* Created a tiny tail implementation, removing -c, -q, -v, and making
771 tail -f work only with a single file. This reduced tail from 6k to
772 2.4k. The bigger/more featured tail can still be had by disabling
773 BB_FEATURE_SIMPLE_TAIL in busybox.defs.h
774	* Ping now falls back to doing the right thing if /etc/protocols
775 turns up missing.
776	* Fixed mount and umount. Previously they could leak loop device
777 allocations, causing the system to quickly run out. Fix for umount
778 by Ben Collins <bcollins@debian.org>, and mount was fixed by me.
779	* ls formatting on eight charactor user names fixed by
780 Randolph Chung <tausq@debian.org>.
781	* cp could, when copying symlinks, change permissions of the
782 files pointed to by the symlinks.
783	* Several fixes from Pavel Roskin <proski@gnu.org>:
784 - `chown' with 1 argument displayed the error incorrectly
785 - `fdflush', `length' and `printf' crashed if run without arguments
786 - `fdflush' tried to flush itself using *argv
787 - added "skip" and "seek" to dd.
788 - ls no longer messus up output when combining files and
789 directories on the command line
790	* swapoff -a was not working. Now it is.
791	* init did not cleanly unmount filesystems on reboot. Now it does.
792	* "sed -ne s/foo/bar/" worked but "sed -n -e s/foo/bar/" didn't.
793 Now both work.
794	* Some architectures (PowerPc) assume chars are unsigned, so they could
795 not distinguish between EOF and '\0xFF' in sed. Sed now uses ints.
796	* Began converting error handling to use some common routines
797 in utility.c
798	* syslogd now has better message handling and ignores SIGHUP.
799	* install.sh had a bug preventing installation to the specified
800 target directory. Fix from Gilbert Coville <gilbert@mvista.com>
801	* You can now spefify alternative strip commands -- change
802 also from Gilbert Coville.

808	* New Apps: wc, hostid, logname, tty, whoami, yes -- all contributed
809 by Edward Betts <edward@debian.org>
810	* Fixed a bug in both cp and mv preventing 'cp foo/README bar'
811 type commands (file in a directory to another directory) from
812 working.
813	* Fixed a logger bug that caused garbage to be written to the syslog
814 (unless you used busybox syslog, which hid the bug). Thanks to
815 Alex Holden <alex@linuxhacker.org> for the fix.
816	* /bin/true and /bin/false were echoing a blank line when run.
817 Now fixed.
818	* mkdir -p would print an error when asked to mkdir an existing dir
819 with no interveining subdirectories.
820	* Fixed "syslogd -O" so that it works. Added -o loop option for mount,
821	* and support in umount for loop
822 devices. Support is toggled by MOUNT_LOOP feature -- Ben Collins
823 <bcollins@debian.org>
824	* Several fixes from Marco Pantaleoni <panta@prosa.it> compile in
825	* fullWrite() not only if BB_TAR is defined, but also
826 if BB_CP or BB_MV are (fullWrite() is referenced by copyFile())
827 * add some compiler optimizations to further reduce executable size
828 (as a side note, on my machines the largest code is generated
829 by gcc 2.95.2 with -Os ! The smallest by plain gcc 2.7.2.3 with
830 -O2 -m386 ...)
831 * Compile now won't fail if busybox.def.h defines
832 BB_FEATURE_LINUXRC but not BB_INIT. (init_main used to be
833 referenced, but not compiled)
834	* Fixed a bug in setting TERM for serial console support. TERM now
835 defaults to "ansi" for serial consoles.
836	* Fixed a bug in handling the CONSOLE env. variable for serial
837	* consoles.

844	* loadacm contributed by Peter Novodvorsky <petya@logic.ru>
845 for loading application character maps for Unicode fonts.
846	* Major init re-work. init now supports inittab (slightly different
847 but similar to sysvinit), allowing me to get all the policy out of
848 init and into the conf file. It works just fine without inittab
849 being present, but if you dont like the default behavior you can
850 now do something about it. Init is much cleaner as a result.
851	* Fixed an bug in syslogd causing it to stop after 20 minutes. -erik
852	* Fixed an embarrasing segfault in head	-beppu Fixed the embarrasing
853	* failure of 'logger -p'. -erik Added the -s option to du -beppu
854	* Re-worked the source tree a bit so it will compile under glibc 2.0.7
855 with the 2.0.x Linux kernel.
856	* Added 'grep -q' thanks to a patch from "Konstantin Boldyshev"
857 <konst@voshod.com>.
858	* Grep -i previously failed on UPPER CASE patterns due to a silly
859 regexp implementation bug that is now fixed.
860	* Fixed a bug where tar would set, and then clear SGID and SUID bits.
861	* Fixed a bug where tar would not set the user and group on device
862 special files.
863	* Fixed a bug where tar would not restore the time to files. Fixed a
864	* major security problem with tar -- it changed ownership
865 of any file pointed to by a symlink to 777 (like say libc....)
866 Ouch!!!
867	* cp and mv were very broken when moving directories. I have rewritten
868 them so they should now work as expected.
869	* sed now supports addresses (numeric or regexp, with negation) and
870 has an append command, thanks to Marco Pantaleoni <panta@prosa.it>
871	* Fixed dmesg. It wasn't parsing its options (-n or -s) properly.
872	* Some cosmetic fixes to ls output formatting to make it behave more
873 like GNU ls.
874	* Fixed a stupid segfault in kill. Several fixes from Friedrich Vedder
875	* <fwv@myrtle.lahn.de>:
876 - Added gunzip -t, removed gunzip.c dead code,
877 - fixed several typos
878 - Glibc 2.0.7 and libc5 compile fixes
879	* Fixed a bug where 'mknod --help' would segfault.

887	* I wrote free (just calls "cat /proc/meminfo"). Added tail, based on
888	* tail from GNU textutils-1.19, but adjusted
889 to suit my evil purposes. Costs 6k. I'll make it smaller
890 sometime.
891	* on reboot, init called 'umount -a -n', which caused errors
892 when BB_MTAB was not enabled. Changed to 'umount -a', which does
893 the right thing.
894	* init will now try to run /sbin/getty if it is present (for easy
895 integration with the about-to-be-released tinylogin.)
896	* kill now behaves itself properly, added 'kill -l' to list signals 'ls
897	* -l' was failing on long directories, since my_getid was leaking
898 one file descriptor per file. Oops.
899	* Fixed rebooting from init. I'd accidently left some debugging code
900	* in
901 which blocked reboots.
902	* Fixed reboot, halt (and added poweroff) such that they handle it when
903 init is not at PID 1 (like when running in an initrd).
904	* Added a prelinary du implementation. Some parameter parsing

912	* Fixed a segfault in 'umount -a' when a badly formed /etc/fstab
913 file existed.
914	* df will not exit on error, but will stat all mounted filesystems.
915	* Fixed tar so uid/gid/permissions on extracted tarballs will be
916 correct.
917	* Fixed find -name so it properly uses shell wildcard patterns
918 (i.e. `*', `?', and `[]') instead of regular expressions, which
919 was causing some confusing and unexpected behavior.
920	* Added klogd to syslogd, so now the log will contain both system and
921 kernel messages.
922	* syslogd now creates the /dev/log socket to make sure it is there, and
923 is actually a socket with the right permissions.
924	* I've taken a first step to making busybox not need the /proc
925 filesystem. Most apps don't need it. Those that _require_ it,
926 will complain if you enable them when you disable

932	* Wrote a micro syslogd, and a logger util (to log things to the syslog
933 from the command line or scripts) With both compiled in, costs 4k.
934	* Fixed 'make install' so symlinks are installed in their proper
935	* locations. Changed the build system slightly so that features can
936	* now be enabled
937 or disabled from the busybox.defs.h header file, without trying to
938 compile in a source file named after that featue (unless that file
939 exists).
940	* Several options are now moved into busybox.defs.h Now 'rm -R' and 'rm
941	* -r' both work. dd now properly handles input beyond 1 block from
942	* stdin. Fixed a bug where tar unpacked everything a directories.
943	* Moved some code
944 from createPath into mkdir where it belonged, thereby making tar
945 work properly.
946	* Fixed an off-by-one bug in cat. Given a list of file it wouldn't cat
947	* out the
948 last file in the list.
949	* Fixed 'ls -ln' so numeric group/uid are presented properly, and fixed
950	* 'ls -l'

952 are presented properly.

959	* fixed dd so it properly defaults to stdin and stdout when no
960 if= and of= are set (fix thanks to Eric Delaunay).
961	* Don't try to close the file descriptor of a pipein tar. (fix also
962	* from
963 Eric Delaunay).
964	* Made createPath be quiet (again thanks to Eric Delaunay). If
965	* BB_CONSOLE_CMD_IF_RC_SCRIPT_EXITS is defined, then whatever
966 command you define it as will be run if the init script exits.
967	* Updated install.sh to make it more robust (thanks to Adam Di Carlo)
968	* NFS support added to mount by Eric Delaunay. It costs 10k when
969	* compiled
970 in, but that is still a big win for those that use NFS.
971	* Made 'rm -f' be silent for non-existant files (thanks to Eric
972	* Delaunay). changed zcat.c to gunzip.c. It now obeys the principle
973	* of least surprise
974 and acts as god intended gunzip and zcat to act. They answer
975 --help and obey the '-c' flag.
976	* Fixed a bug in mv which caused it to not move files when the
977	* destination
978 was a directory.
979	* Fixed a decimal-instead-of-octal bug causing mkdir to make
980	* directories
981 with very wrong permissions.
982	* chmod would overwrite file permissions instead of modifying them.
983 Now it properly modifies permissions.
984	* Init now sends warnings destined for the console to /dev/console to
985	* ensure
986 they show up on whatever the active console it. Otherwise
987 important messages (for example that the system is rebooting) were
988 not seen when switched to a different VT.

994	* intended
995 (i.e. it accepts a file name, answers --help, and obeys the '-c'
996 flag and only then outputs to stdout).
997	* Fixed more.c to compile autowidth on sparc and set initial winsize
998 to 0,0 in case the TIOCGWINSZ ioctl fails. Fix thanks to Eric
999 Delaunay.
1000	* Fixed tar so it now works as expected (it had TRUE/FALSE backwards)
1001	* tar now accepts --help chmod, chown, and chgrp usage now works
1002	* General usage (i.e. --help) cleanups for most apps umount now parses
1003	* options correctly tar can now unpack tarballs containing device
1004	* special files,
1005 sockets, and fifos (though it can't pack them up) thanks to Matt

1013	* ls -l now displays link names outside the current directory,
1014 Patch thanks to Eric Delaunay
1015	* init now properly handles sparc serial consoles and does a
1016 better job of finding the real console device rather than using
1017 /dev/console which doesn't support job control. Patch also thanks
1018 to Eric Delaunay.
1019	* more started to read from stdin after the last file was finished, and
1020 options were not parsed correctly (fix thanks to Eric Delaunay).
1021	* more will now use the terminal size if BB_FEATURE_AUTOWIDTH is on.
1022	* rm wouldn't remove a symlink unless the symlink was valid. This was
1023 a side effect of the busybox 0.32 recursiveAction() fix. Things
1024 should now work correctly.
1025	* grep wouldn't grep stdin. Now it does. sed wouldn't sed stdin. Now
1026	* it does. sed was appending a \n to the end of lines with
1027	* replacements.
1028 Now it doesn't do that.
1029	* ls -l now bypasses libc6 nss when displaying user/group names.
1030 Now uses my_getpwuid and my_getgrgid.

10340.33
1035	* Fixed a bug where init could hang instead of rebooting.
1036	* Removed some debugging noise from init.c
1037	* Fixed ln so it works now (it was very broken).
1038	* Fixed df so it won't segfault when there is no /etc/fstab,
1039	* If BB_MTAB is not defined, df and mount will whine if /etc/fstab
1040 is not installed (since they cannot fixup "/dev/root" to
1041 state the real root device name)
1042	* merged some redundant code from mtab.c/df.c into utility.c

1048 busybox. If you have any problems please let me know ASAP at
1049 andersen@lineo.com or andersee@debian.org
1050	* usage() now prints the BusyBox version. This will help folks
1051 realize that they are not in Kansas anymore.
1052	* Fixed mkdir -m option so that it works. kill segfaulted w/o any
1053	* arguments. Now it doesn't do that. kill wasn't properly accepting
1054	* signal names. It does now. Added new apps chvt and deallocvt (I
1055	* should probably add open) Major rewrite of init.c. Code is now
1056	* readable by mere mortals IMHO. Wrote sed -- weighs only 1.8k (5.8k
1057	* with full regular expressions!). Fixed a stupid seg-fault in sync
1058	* Fixed mount -- mount -a failed to parse and apply mount options Fixed
1059	* umount -n (patch thanks to Matthew Grant <grantma@anathoth.gen.nz>)
1060	* umount -a no longer umounts /proc Added BB_MTAB, allowing (at the
1061	* cost of ~1.5k and the need for a rw /etc)
1062 folks to use a real /etc/mtab file instead of a symlink to
1063 /proc/mounts. mount, and umount will add/remove entries and df
1064 will now use /etc/mtab if BB_MTAB is defined.
1065	* Fixed a nice bug in recursiveAction() which caused it to infinitely
1066 hunt through /proc/../fd/* creating new file descriptors if it
1067 followed the /dev/fd link over to /proc. recursiveAction() now
1068 lstat's the file when followLinks==FALSE so it won't follow links

1078 some redundancy.
1079	* Fixed a segfault in ps when /etc/passwd or /etc/group
1080 are absent. Now will warn you and carry on.
1081	* Added in optional _real_ regular expression support (to be
1082 the basis for a future sed utility). When compiled in it adds
1083 3.9k, but makes grep much more capable.
1084	* Checked out using nftw(3) for recursive stuff, but unfortunatly
1085 it wasn't supported before GNU libc 2.1, and some folks use glibc
1086 2.0.7 since it is much smaller than that latest and greatest.

10900.30
1091	Major changes -- lots of stuff rewritten. Many thanks to Lineo for
1092	paying me to make these updates. If you have any problems with busybox,
1093	or notice any bugs -- please let me know so I can fix it. These
1094	changes include:
1095
1096	Core Changes:
1097 * busybox can now invoke apps in two ways: via symlinks to the
1098 busybox binary, and as 'busybox [function] [arguments]...'
1099 * When invoked as busybox, the list of currently compiled in
1100 functions is printed out (no this is not bloat -- the list has
1101 to be there anyway to map invocation name to function).
1102 * busybox no longer parses command lines for apps or displays their
1103 usage info. Each app gets to handle (or not handle) this for
1104 itself.
1105 * Eliminated monadic, dyadic, descend, block_device, and
1106 postprocess. It was cumbersome to have so many programs
1107 cobbled together in this way. Without them, the app is much
1108 more granular.
1109 * All shared code now lives in utility.c, and is properly
1110 ifdef'ed to be only included for those apps requiring it.
1111 * Eliminated struct FileInfo (the basis of monadic, dyadic, etc)
1112 so now each app has the function prototype of (da-dum): extern
1113 int foo_main(int argc, char** argv); which speeds integration
1114 of new apps.
1115 * Adjusted the Makefile to make it easier to
1116 {en|dis}able debugging.
1117 * Changed default compiler optimization to -Os
1118 (optimize for smaller binaries).
1119
1120	App Changes:
1121 * To cope with the new app function prototype and the removal of
1122 monadic, dyadic, etc, the following apps were re-written:
1123 * cat - Works same as always. chgrp, chmod, chown -
1124 * rewrite. Combined into a single
1125 source file. Absorbed patches from Enrique Zanardi
1126 <ezanard@debian.org> that removes the dependency on
1127 libc6 libnss* libraries.
1128 * cp - Can now do 'cp -a' can can copy devices,
1129 pipes, symlinks, as well as recursive or non-recursive
1130 dir copies.
1131 * fdflush - adjusted to remove dependancy on struct
1132 * FileInfo. find - Now includes some basic regexp matching
1133 which will be the basic of a future mini-sed.
1134 * ln - Same functionality. mkdir - Added -p flag to
1135 * feature set. mv - rewrite. rm - Added -f flag to
1136 * feature set. rmdir - Same functionality. swapon,
1137 * swapoff - Combined into a single binary. No longer
1138 uses /etc/swaps. swap{on|off} -a uses /etc/fstab
1139 instead.
1140 * touch - Same functionality. date - adjusted with a patch
1141 * from Matthew Grant <grantma@anathoth.gen.nz>
1142 to accomodate glibc timezone support. I then ripped out GNU
1143 getopt.
1144 * mkswap -- new version merged from util-linux. Can now make
1145 >128Meg swaps.
1146 * Replaced the old and star, unstar, and tarcat with the tar
1147 implementation from sash. Now tar behaves as god intended it
1148 to (i.e. tar -xvf <file> and tar -cf <file> <dir> work).
1149 * dd -- rewritten. Can with with files, stdin, stdout. Added the
1150 * following new apps: loadfont -- added from debian boot floppies
1151 * chroot -- added based on a patch from Paolo Molaro
1152 * <lupus@lettere.unipd.it> grep -- I just wrote it. Only matches
1153 * simple strings ps -- I just wrote it. Has _no_ options at all,
1154 * but works. fsck_minix, mkfs_minix -- added from util-linux, but
1155 * I ripped out
1156 internationalization and such to make them smaller.
1157 * sfdisk -- Added from util-linux (minus
1158 * internationalization and such). Probably some other
1159 * changes that I forgot to document...
