Move evsel::idx to perf_evsel::idx, so we can move the group interface
to libperf.

Committer notes:

Fixup evsel->idx usage in tools/perf/util/bpf_counter_cgroup.c, that
appeared in my tree in my local tree.

Also fixed up these:

$ find tools/perf/ -name "*.[ch]" | xargs grep 'evsel->idx'
tools/perf/ui/gtk/annotate.c: evsel->idx + i);
tools/perf/ui/gtk/annotate.c: evsel->idx);
$

That running 'make -C tools/perf build-test' caught.

Rename perf_cpu_map__default_new() to perf_cpu_map__new_online_cpus() to
better indicate what the implementation does.

Read the online CPUs from /sys/devices/system/cpu/online first before
using sysconf() as it can't accurately configure holes in the CPU map.

If sysconf() is used, warn when the configured and online processors
disagree.

When reading from a file, if the read doesn't yield a CPU map then
return an empty map rather than the default online. This avoids
recursion but also better yields being able to detect failures.

Add more comments.

The perf_counts_values should be increased to read the new lost data.
Also adjust values after read according the read format.

This supports PERF_FORMAT_GROUP which has a different data format but
it's only available for leader events. Currently it doesn't have an API
to read sibling (member) events in the group. But users may read the
sibling event directly.

Also reading from mmap would be disabled when the read format has ID or
LOST bit as it's not exposed via mmap.

dereferences the pointer. This was happening in a case of with perf
iostat as shown below. The fix is to make FD an "int*" rather than an
int and handle the NULL case as either invalid input or a closed fd.

Rename perf_cpu_map__default_new() to perf_cpu_map__new_online_cpus() to
better indicate what the implementation does.

Read the online CPUs from /sys/devices/system/cpu/online first before
using sysconf() as it can't accurately configure holes in the CPU map.

If sysconf() is used, warn when the configured and online processors
disagree.

When reading from a file, if the read doesn't yield a CPU map then
return an empty map rather than the default online. This avoids
recursion but also better yields being able to detect failures.

Add more comments.

Enabled when REFCNT_CHECKING is defined. The change adds a memory
allocated pointer that is interposed between the reference counted cpu
map at a get and freed by a put. The pointer replaces the original
perf_cpu_map struct, so use of the perf_cpu_map via APIs remains
unchanged. Any use of the cpu map without the API requires two versions,
handled via the RC_CHK_ACCESS macro.

This change is intended to catch:

- use after put: using a cpumap after you have put it will cause a
segv.
- unbalanced puts: two puts for a get will result in a double free
that can be captured and reported by tools like address sanitizer,
including with the associated stack traces of allocation and frees.
- missing puts: if a put is missing then the get turns into a memory
leak that can be reported by leak sanitizer, including the stack
trace at the point the get occurs.

The current code propagate evsel's cpu map settings to evlist when it's
added to an evlist. But the evlist->all_cpus and each evsel's cpus will
be updated in perf_evlist__set_maps() later. No need to do it before
evlist's cpus are set actually.

In fact it discards this intermediate all_cpus maps at the beginning
of perf_evlist__set_maps(). Let's not do this. It's only needed when
an evsel is added after the evlist cpu/thread maps are set.

Originally, (refer commit f90d194a867a5a1d ("perf evlist: Do not poll
events that use the system_wide flag") there wasn't much reason to poll
system-wide events because:

1. The mmaps get "merged" via set-output anyway (the per-cpu case)
2. perf reads all mmaps when any event is woken
3. system-wide mmaps do not fill up as fast as the mmaps for user
selected events

But there was 1 reason not to poll which was that it prevented correct
termination due to POLLHUP on all user selected events. That issue is
now easily resolved by using fdarray_flag__nonfilterable.

With the advent of commit ae4f8ae16a078964 ("libperf evlist: Allow
mixing per-thread and per-cpu mmaps"), system-wide mmaps can be used
also in the per-thread case where reason 1 does not apply.

Fix the omission of system-wide events from polling by using the
fdarray_flag__nonfilterable flag.

events that use the system_wide flag") there wasn't much reason to poll
system-wide events because:

1. The mmaps get "merged" via set-output anyway (the per-cpu case)
2. perf reads all mmaps when any event is woken
3. system-wide mmaps do not fill up as fast as the mmaps for user
selected events

But there was 1 reason not to poll which was that it prevented correct
termination due to POLLHUP on all user selected events. That issue is
now easily resolved by using fdarray_flag__nonfilterable.

With the advent of commit ae4f8ae16a078964 ("libperf evlist: Allow
mixing per-thread and per-cpu mmaps"), system-wide mmaps can be used
also in the per-thread case where reason 1 does not apply.

Fix the omission of system-wide events from polling by using the
fdarray_flag__nonfilterable flag.

The offending commit removed mmap_per_thread(), which did not consider
the different set-output rules for per-thread mmaps i.e. in the per-thread
case set-output is used for file descriptors of the same thread not the
same cpu.

This was not immediately noticed because it only happens with
multi-threaded targets and we do not have a test for that yet.

Reinstate mmap_per_thread() expanding it to cover also system-wide per-cpu
events i.e. to continue to allow the mixing of per-thread and per-cpu
mmaps.

Debug messages (with -vv) show the file descriptors that are opened with
sys_perf_event_open. New debug messages are added (needs -vvv) that show
also which file descriptors are mmapped and which are redirected with
set-output.

In the per-cpu case (cpu != -1) file descriptors for the same CPU are
set-output to the first file descriptor for that CPU.

In the per-thread case (cpu == -1) file descriptors for the same thread are
set-output to the first file descriptor for that thread.

Example (process 17489 has 2 threads):

The offending commit removed mmap_per_thread(), which did not consider
the different set-output rules for per-thread mmaps i.e. in the per-thread
case set-output is used for file descriptors of the same thread not the
same cpu.

This was not immediately noticed because it only happens with
multi-threaded targets and we do not have a test for that yet.

Reinstate mmap_per_thread() expanding it to cover also system-wide per-cpu
events i.e. to continue to allow the mixing of per-thread and per-cpu
mmaps.

Debug messages (with -vv) show the file descriptors that are opened with
sys_perf_event_open. New debug messages are added (needs -vvv) that show
also which file descriptors are mmapped and which are redirected with
set-output.

In the per-cpu case (cpu != -1) file descriptors for the same CPU are
set-output to the first file descriptor for that CPU.

In the per-thread case (cpu == -1) file descriptors for the same thread are
set-output to the first file descriptor for that thread.

The `cpu` argument of perf_evsel__read() must specify the cpu index.

perf_cpu_map__for_each_cpu() is for iterating the cpu number (not index)
and is thus not appropriate for use with perf_evsel__read().

So, if there is an offline CPU, the cpu number specified in the argument
may point out of range because the cpu number and the cpu index are
different.

Fix test_stat_cpu().

The perf_counts_values should be increased to read the new lost data.
Also adjust values after read according the read format.

This supports PERF_FORMAT_GROUP which has a different data format but
it's only available for leader events. Currently it doesn't have an API
to read sibling (member) events in the group. But users may read the
sibling event directly.

Also reading from mmap would be disabled when the read format has ID or
LOST bit as it's not exposed via mmap.

Commit d110162cafc80dad ("perf tsc: Support cap_user_time_short for
event TIME_CONV") supports the extended parameters for event TIME_CONV,
but it broke the backwards compatibility, so any perf data file with old
event format fails to convert timestamp.

This patch introduces a helper event_contains() to check if an event
contains a specific member or not. For the backwards-compatibility, if
the event size confirms the extended parameters are supported in the
event TIME_CONV, then copies these parameters.

We do not store size with build ids in perf data, but there's enough
space to do it. Adding misc bit PERF_RECORD_MISC_BUILD_ID_SIZE to mark
build id event with size.

With this fix the dso with md5 build id will have correct build id data
and will be usable for debuginfod processing if needed (coming in
following patches).

Rename perf_cpu_map__default_new() to perf_cpu_map__new_online_cpus() to
better indicate what the implementation does.

Read the online CPUs from /sys/devices/system/cpu/online first before
using sysconf() as it can't accurately configure holes in the CPU map.

If sysconf() is used, warn when the configured and online processors
disagree.

When reading from a file, if the read doesn't yield a CPU map then
return an empty map rather than the default online. This avoids
recursion but also better yields being able to detect failures.

Add more comments.

Processors based on chiplet architecture, such as AMD EPYC and Hygon do
not expose the chiplet details in the sysfs CPU topology information.
However, this information can be derived from the per CPU cache level
information from the sysfs.

'perf stat' has already supported aggregation based on topology
information using core ID, socket ID, etc. It'll be useful to aggregate
based on the cache topology to detect problems like imbalance and
cache-to-cache sharing at various cache levels.

This patch lays the foundation for aggregating data in 'perf stat' based
on the processor's cache topology. The cmdline option to aggregate data
based on the cache topology is added in Patch 4 of the series while this
patch sets up all the necessary functions and variables required to
support the new aggregation option.

The patch also adds support to display per-cache aggregation, or save it
as a JSON or CSV, as splitting it into a separate patch would break
builds when compiling with "-Werror=switch-enum" where the compiler will
complain about the lack of handling for the AGGR_CACHE case in the
output functions.

Committer notes:

Don't use perf_stat_config in tools/perf/util/cpumap.c, this would make
code that is in util/, thus not really specific to a single builtin, use
a specific builtin config structure.

Move the functions introduced in this patch from
tools/perf/util/cpumap.c since it needs access to builtin specific
and is not strictly needed to live in the util/ directory.

With this 'perf test python' is back building.

fixes in existing scripts breaks coding/formatting style, it will get
captured during the perf build.

Added "tests/Makefile.tests" to run shellcheck on shellscripts in
tests/shell. The make rule "SHLLCHECK_RUN" ensures that, every time
during make, shellcheck will be run only on modified files during
subsequent invocations. By this, if any newly added shell scripts or
fixes in existing scripts breaks coding/formatting style, it will get
captured during the perf build.

Add rule in new Makefile "tests/Makefile.tests" for running shellcheck

LIBBPF is dependent on zlib so move the NO_ZLIB and feature check
early to avoid statically building when zlib is disabled. This avoids
a linkage failure with perf and static libbpf when zlib isn't
specified.

Move BUILD_BPF_SKEL logic to one place and if not defined set
BUILD_BPF_SKEL to 1. Detect dependencies of building with BPF
skeletons and warn/disable if the dependencies aren't present.

Change Makefile.perf to contain BPF skeleton logic dependent on the
Makefile.config result and refresh the comment about BUILD_BPF_SKEL.

Because pkg-config is not installed, fail to get libtraceevent version in

However, the preceding error information is not user-friendly.

Identify errors in advance by checking that pkg-config is installed at
compile time.

LIBBPF is dependent on zlib so move the NO_ZLIB and feature check
early to avoid statically building when zlib is disabled. This avoids
a linkage failure with perf and static libbpf when zlib isn't
specified.

Move BUILD_BPF_SKEL logic to one place and if not defined set
BUILD_BPF_SKEL to 1. Detect dependencies of building with BPF
skeletons and warn/disable if the dependencies aren't present.

Change Makefile.perf to contain BPF skeleton logic dependent on the
Makefile.config result and refresh the comment about BUILD_BPF_SKEL.

New features like the BPF --filter support in perf record have made the
BPF event functionality somewhat redundant. As shown by commit
fcb027c1a4f6 ("perf tools: Revert enable indices setting syntax for BPF
map") and commit 14e4b9f4289a ("perf trace: Raw augmented syscalls fix
libbpf 1.0+ compatibility") the BPF event support hasn't been well
maintained and it adds considerable complexity in areas like event
parsing, not least as '/' is a separator for event modifiers as well as
in paths.

This patch removes support in the event parser for BPF events and then
the associated functions are removed. This leads to the removal of whole
source files like bpf-loader.c. Removing support means that augmented
syscalls in perf trace is broken, this will be fixed in a later commit
adding support using BPF skeletons.

The removal of BPF events causes an unused label warning from flex
generated code, so update build to ignore it:

Committer notes:

Extracted from a larger patch that was also removing the support for

Commit 6a40cd90f5deb6de ("perf tools: Add libunwind dependency for DWARF
CFI unwinding") added libunwind support but also -funwind-tables and
-ggdb3 to the standard build. These build flags aren't necessary so
remove, set -g when DEBUG is enabled for the build.

Refactor C++ demangling out of symbol-elf into its own files similar
to other languages. Add abi::__cxa_demangle support. As the other
demanglers are not shippable with distributions, this brings back C++
demangling in a common case. It isn't perfect as the support for
optionally demangling arguments and modifiers isn't present.

In 746bd29e348f99b4 ("perf build: Use tools/lib headers from install
path") we stopped having the tools/lib/ directory from the kernel
sources in the header include path unconditionally, which breaks the
build on systems with older versions of libbpf-devel, in this case 0.7.0
as some of the structures and function declarations present in the newer
version of libbpf included in the kernel sources (tools/lib/bpf) are not
anymore used, just the ones in the system libbpf.

So instead of trying to provide alternative functions when the
libbpf-bpf_program__set_insns feature test fails, fail a
LIBBPF_DYNAMIC=1 build (requesting the use of the system's libbpf) and
emit this build error message:

$ make LIBBPF_DYNAMIC=1 -C tools/perf
Makefile.config:593: *** Error: libbpf devel library needs to be >= 0.8.0 to build with LIBBPF_DYNAMIC, update or build statically with the version that comes with the kernel sources. Stop.
$

For v6.3 these tests will be revamped and we'll require libbpf 1.0 as a
minimal version for using LIBBPF_DYNAMIC=1, most distros should have it
by now or at v6.3 time.
