It was ported from grsecurity/PaX. The infrastructure supports building out-of-tree modules and building in a separate directory. Cross-compilation is supported too. Currently the x86, arm, arm64 and uml architectures enable plugins. The directory of the gcc plugins is scripts/gcc-plugins. You can use a file or a directory there. The plugins compile with these options: * -fno-rtti: gcc is compiled with this option so the plugins must use it too * -fno-exceptions: this is inherited from gcc too * -fasynchronous-unwind-tables: this is inherited from gcc too * -ggdb: it is useful for debugging a plugin (better backtrace on internal errors) * -Wno-narrowing: to suppress warnings from gcc headers (ipa-utils.h) * -Wno-unused-variable: to suppress warnings from gcc headers (gcc_version variable, plugin-version.h) The infrastructure introduces a new Makefile target called gcc-plugins. It supports all gcc versions from 4.5 to 6.0. The scripts/gcc-plugin.sh script chooses the proper host compiler (gcc-4.7 can be built by either gcc or g++). This script also checks the availability of the included headers in scripts/gcc-plugins/gcc-common.h. The gcc-common.h header contains frequently included headers for GCC plugins and it has a compatibility layer for the supported gcc versions. The gcc-generate-*-pass.h headers automatically generate the registration structures for GIMPLE, SIMPLE_IPA, IPA and RTL passes. Note that 'make clean' keeps the *.so files (only the distclean or mrproper targets clean all) because they are needed for out-of-tree modules. Based on work created by the PaX Team. For example, gcc sees us putting things on a local list head allocated on the stack, which involves exactly those kinds of pointers to the local stack entry: In function ‘__list_add’, inlined from ‘list_add_tail’ at include/linux/list.h:102:2, inlined from ‘rebuild_snap_realms’ at fs/ceph/snap.c:434:2: include/linux/list.h:74:19: warning: storing the address of local variable ‘realm_queue’ in ‘*&realm_27(D)->rebuild_item.prev’ [-Wdangling-pointer=] 74 | new->prev = prev; | ~~~~~~~~~~^~~~~~ But then gcc - understandably - doesn't really understand the big picture how the doubly linked list works, so doesn't see how we then end up emptying said list head in a loop and the pointer we added has been removed. Gcc also complains about us (intentionally) using this as a way to store a kind of fake stack trace, eg drivers/acpi/acpica/utdebug.c:40:38: warning: storing the address of local variable ‘current_sp’ in ‘acpi_gbl_entry_stack_pointer’ [-Wdangling-pointer=] 40 | acpi_gbl_entry_stack_pointer = ¤t_sp; | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~^~~~~~~~~~~~~ which is entirely reasonable from a compiler standpoint, and we may want to change those kinds of patterns, but not not. This is similar to commit 38cf307c1f20 ("mm: fix kthread_use_mm() vs TLB invalidate"). At exec-time when the new mm is activated, the old one should usually be single-threaded and no longer used, unless something else is holding an mm_users reference (which may be possible). Absent other mm_users, there is also a race with preemption and lazy tlb switching. Consider the kernel_execve case where the current thread is using a lazy tlb active mm: call_usermodehelper() kernel_execve() old_mm = current->mm; active_mm = current->active_mm; *** preempt *** --------------------> schedule() prev->active_mm = NULL; mmdrop(prev active_mm); ... <-------------------- schedule() current->mm = mm; current->active_mm = mm; if (!old_mm) mmdrop(active_mm); If we switch back to the kernel thread from a different mm, there is a double free of the old active_mm, and a missing free of the new one. Closing this race only requires interrupts to be disabled while ->mm and ->active_mm are being switched, but the TLB problem requires also holding interrupts off over activate_mm. Unfortunately not all archs can do that yet, e.g., arm defers the switch if irqs are disabled and expects finish_arch_post_lock_switch() to be called to complete the flush; um takes a blocking lock in activate_mm(). So as a first step, disable interrupts across the mm/active_mm updates to close the lazy tlb preempt race, and provide an arch option to extend that to activate_mm which allows architectures doing IPI based TLB shootdowns to close the second race. This is a bit ugly, but in the interest of fixing the bug and backporting before all architectures are converted this is a compromise.
