One of the issues was fixed by Nick Piggin in commit 3b8000ae185c ("mm/vmalloc: huge vmalloc backing pages should be split rather than compound"), but I'm still worried about page protection issues, and VM_FLUSH_RESET_PERMS in particular. However, like the hash table allocation case (commit f2edd118d02d: "page_alloc: use vmalloc_huge for large system hash"), the use of kvmalloc() should be safe from any such games, since the returned pointer might be a SLUB allocation, and as such no user should reasonably be using it in any odd ways. We also know that the allocations are fairly large, since it falls back to the vmalloc case only when a kmalloc() fails. So using a hugepage mapping seems both safe and relevant. This patch does show a weakness in the opt-in strategy: since the opt-in flag is in the 'vm_flags', not the usual gfp_t allocation flags, very few of the usual interfaces actually expose it. That's not much of an issue in this case that already used one of the fairly specialized low-level vmalloc interfaces for the allocation, but for a lot of other vmalloc() users that might want to opt in, it's going to be very inconvenient. We'll either have to fix any compatibility problems, or expose it in the gfp flags (__GFP_COMP would have made a lot of sense) to allow normal vmalloc() users to use hugepage mappings. That said, the cases that really matter were probably already taken care of by the hash tabel allocation. One example is virtio-mem; while unplugged memory -- marked as PageOffline() can currently be read in the hypervisor, this will no longer be the case in the future; for example, when having a virtio-mem device backed by huge pages in the hypervisor. Some special PFN walkers -- i.e., /proc/kcore -- read content of random pages after checking PageOffline(); however, these PFN walkers can race with drivers that set PageOffline(). Let's introduce page_offline_(begin|end|freeze|thaw) for synchronizing. page_offline_freeze()/page_offline_thaw() allows for a subsystem to synchronize with such drivers, achieving that a page cannot be set PageOffline() while frozen. page_offline_begin()/page_offline_end() is used by drivers that care about such races when setting a page PageOffline(). For simplicity, use a rwsem for now; neither drivers nor users are performance sensitive. One example of this is dying cgroups pinned by some page cache. A previous case was auxiliary path name memory associated with dentries; we have since annotated those allocations to avoid overcommit failures (see d79f7aa496fc ("mm: treat indirectly reclaimable memory as free in overcommit logic")). But trying to classify all allocated memory reliably as reclaimable and unreclaimable is a bit of a fool's errand. There could be a myriad of dependencies that constantly change with kernel versions. It becomes even more questionable of an effort when considering how this estimate of available memory is used: it's not compared to the system-wide allocated virtual memory in any way. It's not even compared to the allocating process's address space. It's compared to the single allocation request at hand! So we have an elaborate left-hand side of the equation that tries to assess the exact breathing room the system has available down to a page - and then compare it to an isolated allocation request with no additional context. We could fail an allocation of N bytes, but for two allocations of N/2 bytes we'd do this elaborate dance twice in a row and then still let N bytes of virtual memory through. This doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Let's take a step back and look at the actual goal of the heuristic. From the documentation: Heuristic overcommit handling. Obvious overcommits of address space are refused. Used for a typical system. It ensures a seriously wild allocation fails while allowing overcommit to reduce swap usage. root is allowed to allocate slightly more memory in this mode. This is the default. If all we want to do is catch clearly bogus allocation requests irrespective of the general virtual memory situation, the physical memory counter-part doesn't need to be that complicated, either. When in GUESS mode, catch wild allocations by comparing their request size to total amount of ram and swap in the system. The possible ways to deal with this situation are: (1) Ignore and pin -- what we do right now. (2) Fail to pin -- which would be rather surprising to callers and could break user space. (3) Trigger unsharing and pin the now exclusive page -- reliable R/O pins. Let's implement 3) because it provides the clearest semantics and allows for checking in unpin_user_pages() and friends for possible BUGs: when trying to unpin a page that's no longer exclusive, clearly something went very wrong and might result in memory corruptions that might be hard to debug. So we better have a nice way to spot such issues. This change implies that whenever user space *wrote* to a private mapping (IOW, we have an anonymous page mapped), that GUP pins will always remain consistent: reliable R/O GUP pins of anonymous pages. As a side note, this commit fixes the COW security issue for hugetlb with FOLL_PIN as documented in: https://lore.kernel.org/r/3ae33b08-d9ef-f846-56fb-645e3b9b4c66@redhat.com The vmsplice reproducer still applies, because vmsplice uses FOLL_GET instead of FOLL_PIN. Note that follow_huge_pmd() doesn't apply because we cannot end up in there with FOLL_PIN. This commit is heavily based on prototype patches by Andrea. We really only care about pins on anonymous pages, because they are prone to getting replaced in the COW handler once mapped R/O. For !anon pages in cow-mappings (!VM_SHARED && VM_MAYWRITE) we shouldn't really care about that, at least not that I could come up with an example. Let's drop the is_cow_mapping() check from page_needs_cow_for_dma(), as we know we're dealing with anonymous pages. Also, drop the handling of pinned pages from copy_huge_pud() and add a comment if ever supporting anonymous pages on the PUD level. This is a preparation for tracking exclusivity of anonymous pages in the rmap code, and disallowing marking a page shared (-> failing to duplicate) if there are GUP pins on a page.
