H A D | ipc_namespace.h | diff 137ec390 Mon Aug 03 04:16:27 MDT 2020 Kirill Tkhai <ktkhai@virtuozzo.com> ipc: Use generic ns_common::count Switch over ipc namespaces to use the newly introduced common lifetime counter. Currently every namespace type has its own lifetime counter which is stored in the specific namespace struct. The lifetime counters are used identically for all namespaces types. Namespaces may of course have additional unrelated counters and these are not altered. This introduces a common lifetime counter into struct ns_common. The ns_common struct encompasses information that all namespaces share. That should include the lifetime counter since its common for all of them. It also allows us to unify the type of the counters across all namespaces. Most of them use refcount_t but one uses atomic_t and at least one uses kref. Especially the last one doesn't make much sense since it's just a wrapper around refcount_t since 2016 and actually complicates cleanup operations by having to use container_of() to cast the correct namespace struct out of struct ns_common. Having the lifetime counter for the namespaces in one place reduces maintenance cost. Not just because after switching all namespaces over we will have removed more code than we added but also because the logic is more easily understandable and we indicate to the user that the basic lifetime requirements for all namespaces are currently identical. The spotted races got sorted out by re-introducing the old test within the racy critical sections. This patch introduces ipc_valid_object() to consolidate the way we cope with IPC_RMID races by using the same abstraction across the API implementation. The idr of which 3 exist for each ipc namespace is never freed. This patch simply frees them when the ipcns is freed. I don't believe any idr_remove() are done from rcu (and could therefore be delayed until after this idr_destroy()), so the patch should be safe. These patches fix two issues reported[1] a while back by Joe and Andrea around how shmat(2) behaves with nil-page. The first reverts a commit that it was incorrectly thought that mapping nil-page (address=0) was a no no with MAP_FIXED. This is not the case, with the exception of SHM_REMAP; which is address in the second patch. I chose two patches because it is easier to backport and it explicitly reverts bogus behaviour. Both patches ought to be in -stable and ltp testcases need updated (the added testcase around the cve can be modified to just test for SHM_RND|SHM_REMAP). For the regular mmap case, the protection mentioned above is that the kernel gets to generate the address -- arch_get_unmapped_area() will always check for MAP_FIXED and return that address. So by the time we do security_mmap_addr(0) things get funky for shmat(). The testcase itself shows that while a regular user crashes, root will not have a problem attaching a nil-page. There are two possible fixes to this. The first, and which this patch does, is to simply allow root to crash as well -- this is also regular mmap behavior, ie when hacking up the testcase and adding mmap(... |MAP_FIXED). While this approach is the safer option, the second alternative is to ignore SHM_RND if the rounded address is 0, thus only having MAP_SHARED flags. This makes the behavior of shmat() identical to the mmap() case. The downside of this is obviously user visible, but does make sense in that it maintains semantics after the round-down wrt 0 address and mmap. Passes shm related ltp tests. H A D | sem.c | diff b52be557 Mon Dec 05 09:59:27 MST 2022 Jann Horn <jannh@google.com> ipc/sem: Fix dangling sem_array access in semtimedop race When __do_semtimedop() goes to sleep because it has to wait for a semaphore value becoming zero or becoming bigger than some threshold, it links the on-stack sem_queue to the sem_array, then goes to sleep without holding a reference on the sem_array. When __do_semtimedop() comes back out of sleep, one of two things must happen: a) We prove that the on-stack sem_queue has been disconnected from the (possibly freed) sem_array, making it safe to return from the stack frame that the sem_queue exists in. b) We stabilize our reference to the sem_array, lock the sem_array, and detach the sem_queue from the sem_array ourselves. sem_array has RCU lifetime, so for case (b), the reference can be stabilized inside an RCU read-side critical section by locklessly checking whether the sem_queue is still connected to the sem_array. However, the current code does the lockless check on sem_queue before starting an RCU read-side critical section, so the result of the lockless check immediately becomes useless. Fix it by doing rcu_read_lock() before the lockless check. Now RCU ensures that if we observe the object being on our queue, the object can't be freed until rcu_read_unlock(). This bug is only hittable on kernel builds with full preemption support (either CONFIG_PREEMPT or PREEMPT_DYNAMIC with preempt=full). When switching from the per-semaphore locks to the global lock, all per-semaphore locks must be scanned for ongoing operations. The patch adds a hysteresis for switching from the global lock to the per semaphore locks. This reduces how often the per-semaphore locks must be scanned. Compared to the initial patch, this is a simplified solution: Setting USE_GLOBAL_LOCK_HYSTERESIS to 1 restores the current behavior. In theory, a workload with exactly 10 simple sops and then one complex op now scales a bit worse, but this is pure theory: If there is concurrency, the it won't be exactly 10:1:10:1:10:1:... If there is no concurrency, then there is no need for scalability. However, within semctl we only do this for SETVAL, leaving SETALL without updating the field, and therefore rather inconsistent behavior when compared to other Unices. There is really no documentation regarding this and therefore users should not make assumptions. With this patch, along with updating semctl.2 manpages, this scenario should become less ambiguous As such, set sempid on SETALL cmd. Also update some in-code documentation, specifying where the sempid is set. Passes ltp and custom testcase where a child (fork) does SETALL to the set.
