perf stat: Support per-cluster aggregation Some platforms have 'cluster' topology and CPUs in the cluster will share resources like L3 Cache Tag (for HiSilicon Kunpeng SoC) or L2 cache (for Intel Jacobsville). Currently parsing and building cluster topology have been supported since [1]. perf stat has already supported aggregation for other topologies like die or socket, etc. It'll be useful to aggregate per-cluster to find problems like L3T bandwidth contention. This patch add support for "--per-cluster" option for per-cluster aggregation. Also update the docs and related test. Note that perf recently supports "--per-cache" aggregation, but it's not the same with the cluster although cluster CPUs may share some cache resources. perf stat: Show average value on multiple runs When -r option is used, perf stat runs the command multiple times and update stats in the evsel->stats.res_stats for global aggregation. But the value is never used and the value it prints at the end is just the value from the last run. I think we should print the average number of multiple runs. Add evlist__copy_res_stats() to update the aggr counter (for display) using the values in the evsel->stats.res_stats. perf stat: New metricgroup output for the default mode In the default mode, the current output of the metricgroup include both events and metrics, which is not necessary and just makes the output hard to read. Since different ARCHs (even different generations in the same ARCH) may use different events. The output also vary on different platforms. For a metricgroup, only outputting the value of each metric is good enough. Add a new field default_metricgroup in evsel to indicate an event of the default metricgroup. For those events, printout() should print the metricgroup name rather than each event. Add perf_stat__skip_metric_event() to skip the evsel in the Default metricgroup, if it's not running or not the metric event. Add print_metricgroup_header_t to pass the functions which print the display name of each metricgroup in the Default metricgroup. Support all three output methods. perf stat: Setup the foundation to allow aggregation based on cache topology Processors based on chiplet architecture, such as AMD EPYC and Hygon do not expose the chiplet details in the sysfs CPU topology information. However, this information can be derived from the per CPU cache level information from the sysfs. 'perf stat' has already supported aggregation based on topology information using core ID, socket ID, etc. It'll be useful to aggregate based on the cache topology to detect problems like imbalance and cache-to-cache sharing at various cache levels. This patch lays the foundation for aggregating data in 'perf stat' based on the processor's cache topology. The cmdline option to aggregate data based on the cache topology is added in Patch 4 of the series while this patch sets up all the necessary functions and variables required to support the new aggregation option. The patch also adds support to display per-cache aggregation, or save it as a JSON or CSV, as splitting it into a separate patch would break builds when compiling with "-Werror=switch-enum" where the compiler will complain about the lack of handling for the AGGR_CACHE case in the output functions. Committer notes: Don't use perf_stat_config in tools/perf/util/cpumap.c, this would make code that is in util/, thus not really specific to a single builtin, use a specific builtin config structure. Move the functions introduced in this patch from tools/perf/util/cpumap.c since it needs access to builtin specific and is not strictly needed to live in the util/ directory. With this 'perf test python' is back building. perf metric: Add --metric-no-threshold option Thresholds may need additional events, this can impact things like sharing groups of events to avoid multiplexing. Add a flag to make the threshold calculations optional. The threshold will still be computed if no additional events are necessary. perf stat: Fix counting when initial delay configured When creating counters with initial delay configured, the enable_on_exec field is not set. So we need to enable the counters later. The problem is, when a workload is specified the target__none() is true. So we also need to check stat_config.initial_delay. In this change, we add a new field 'initial_delay' for struct target which could be shared by other subcommands. And define target__enable_on_exec() which returns whether enable_on_exec should be set on normal cases. perf stat: Display event stats using aggr counts Now aggr counts are ready for use. Convert the display routines to use the aggr counts and update the shadow stat with them. It doesn't need to aggregate counts or collect aliases anymore during the display. Get rid of now unused struct perf_aggr_thread_value. Note that there's a difference in the display order among the aggr mode. For per-core/die/socket/node aggregation, it shows relevant events in the same unit together, whereas global/thread/no aggregation it shows the same events for different units together. So it still uses separate codes to display them due to the ordering. One more thing to note is that it breaks per-core event display for now. The next patch will fix it to have identical output as of now. perf stat: Add perf_stat_process_shadow_stats() This function updates the shadow stats using the aggregated counts uniformly since it uses the aggr_counts for the every aggr mode. It'd have duplicate shadow stats for each items for now since the display routines will update them once again. But that'd be fine as it shows the average values and it'd be gone eventually. perf stat: Add perf_stat_process_percore() The perf_stat_process_percore() is to aggregate counts for an event per-core even if the aggr_mode is AGGR_NONE. This is enabled when user requested it on the command line. To handle that, it keeps the per-cpu counts at first. And then it aggregates the counts that have the same core id in the aggr->counts and updates the values for each cpu back. Later, per-core events will skip one of the CPUs unless percore-show-thread option is given. In that case, it can simply print all cpu stats with the updated (per-core) values. perf stat: Add perf_stat_merge_counters() The perf_stat_merge_counters() is to aggregate the same events in different PMUs like in case of uncore or hybrid. The same logic is in the stat-display routines but I think it should be handled when it processes the event counters. As it works on the aggr_counters, it doesn't change the output yet. perf stat: Allocate evsel->stats->aggr properly The perf_stat_config.aggr_map should have a correct size of the aggregation map. Use it to allocate aggr_counts. Also AGGR_NONE with per-core events can be tricky because it doesn't aggreate basically but it needs to do so for per-core events only. So only per-core evsels will have stats->aggr data. Note that other caller of evlist__alloc_stat() might not have stat_config or aggr_map. perf stat: Introduce stats for the user and system rusage times This is preparation for exporting rusage values as tool events. Add new global stats tracking the values obtained via rusage. For now only ru_utime and ru_stime are part of the tracked stats. Both are stored as nanoseconds to be consistent with 'duration_time', although the finest resolution the struct timeval data in rusage provides are microseconds. perf cpumap: Give CPUs their own type A common problem is confusing CPU map indices with the CPU, by wrapping the CPU with a struct then this is avoided. This approach is similar to atomic_t. perf stat: Support L2 Topdown events The TMA method level 2 metrics is supported from the Intel Sapphire Rapids server, which expose four L2 Topdown metrics events to user space. There are eight L2 events in total. The other four L2 Topdown metrics events are calculated from the corresponding L1 and the exposed L2 events. Now, the --topdown prints the complete top-down metrics that supported by the CPU. For the Intel Sapphire Rapids server, there are 4 L1 events and 8 L2 events displyed in one line. Add a new option, --td-level, to display the top-down statistics that equal to or lower than the input level. The L2 event is marked only when both its L1 parent event and itself crosse the threshold. Here is an example: $ perf stat --topdown --td-level=2 --no-metric-only sleep 1 Topdown accuracy may decrease when measuring long periods. This is useful with 'perf stat record' to write the data only to the perf.data file, which can lower measurement overhead because the data doesn't need to be formatted. On systems with more cores the savings are higher. perf stat: Add --for-each-cgroup option The --for-each-cgroup option is a syntax sugar to monitor large number of cgroups easily. Current command line requires to list all the events and cgroups even if users want to monitor same events for each cgroup. This patch addresses that usage by copying given events for each cgroup on user's behalf. For instance, if they want to monitor 6 events for 200 cgroups each they should write 1200 event names (with -e) AND 1200 cgroup names (with -G) on the command line. But with this change, they can just specify 6 events and 200 cgroups with a new option. A simpler example below: It wants to measure 3 events for 2 cgroups ('A' and 'B'). perf stat: Support new per thread TopDown metrics Icelake has support for reporting per thread TopDown metrics. These are reported differently than the previous TopDown support, each metric is standalone, but scaled to pipeline "slots". We don't need to do anything special for HyperThreading anymore. Teach perf stat --topdown to handle these new metrics and print them in the same way as the previous TopDown metrics. The restrictions of only being able to report information per core is gone. perf stat: Save aggr value to first member of prev_raw_counts To collect the overall statistics for interval mode, we copy the counts from evsel->prev_raw_counts to evsel->counts. For AGGR_GLOBAL mode, because the perf_stat_process_counter creates aggr values from per cpu values, but the per cpu values are 0, so the calculated aggr values will be always 0. perf stat: Copy counts from prev_raw_counts to evsel->counts It would be useful to support the overall statistics for perf-stat interval mode. For example, report the summary at the end of "perf-stat -I" output. But since perf-stat can support many aggregation modes, such as --per-thread, --per-socket, -M and etc, we need a solution which doesn't bring much complexity. The idea is to use 'evsel->prev_raw_counts' which is updated in each interval and it's saved with the latest counts. Before reporting the summary, we copy the counts from evsel->prev_raw_counts to evsel->counts, and next we just follow non-interval processing. v5: --- Don't save the previous aggr value to the member of [cpu0,thread0] in perf_counts. Originally that was a trick because the perf_stat_process_counter would create aggr values from per cpu values. But we don't need to do that all the time. We will handle it in next patch. perf stat: Use affinity for opening events Restructure the event opening in perf stat to cycle through the events by CPU after setting affinity to that CPU. This eliminates IPI overhead in the perf API. We have to loop through the CPU in the outter builtin-stat code instead of leaving that to low level functions. It has to change the weak group fallback strategy slightly. Since we cannot easily undo the opens for other CPUs move the weak group retry to a separate loop. perf stat: Support per-die aggregation It is useful to aggregate counts per die. E.g. Uncore becomes die-scope on Xeon Cascade Lake-AP. Introduce a new option "--per-die" to support per-die aggregation. The global id for each core has been changed to socket + die id + core id. The global id for each die is socket + die id. Add die information for per-core aggregation. The output of per-core aggregation will be changed from "S0-C0" to "S0-D0-C0". Any scripts which rely on the output format of per-core aggregation probably be broken. For 'perf stat record/report', there is no die information when processing the old perf.data. The per-die result will be the same as per-socket. perf stat: Add support to print counts after a period of time Introduce a new option to print counts after N milliseconds and update 'perf stat' documentation accordingly. Show below is the output of the new option for perf stat. $ perf stat --time 2000 -e cycles -a Performance counter stats for 'system wide': 157,260,423 cycles 2.003060766 seconds time elapsed We can print the count deltas after N milliseconds with this new introduced option. This option is not supported with "-I" option. In addition, according to Kangliang's patch(19afd10410957), the monitoring overhead for system-wide core event could be very high if the interval-print parameter was below 100ms, and the limitation value is 10ms. So the same warning will be displayed when the time is set between 10ms to 100ms, and the minimal time is limited to 10ms. Users can make a decision according to their spcific cases. Committer notes: This actually stops the workload after the specified time, then prints the counts. So I renamed the option to --timeout and updated the documentation to state that it will not just print the counts after the specified time, but will really stop the 'perf stat' session and print the counts. The rename from 'time' to 'timeout' also fixes the build in systems where 'time' is used by glibc and can't be used as a name of a variable, such as centos:5 and centos:6. Changes since v3: - none. perf stat: Allocate shadow stats buffer for threads After perf_evlist__create_maps() being executed, we can get all threads from /proc. And via thread_map__nr(), we can also get the number of threads. With the number of threads, the patch allocates a buffer which will record the shadow stats for these threads. The buffer pointer is saved in stat_config. perf stat: Print per-thread shadow stats The function perf_stat__print_shadow_stats() is called to print the shadow stats on a set of static variables. But the static variables are the limitations to support per-thread shadow stats. This patch lets the perf_stat__print_shadow_stats() support to print the shadow stats from a input parameter 'st'. It will not directly get value from static variable. Instead, it now uses runtime_stat_avg() and runtime_stat_n() to get and compute the values. License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. perf stat: Support JSON metrics in perf stat Add generic support for standalone metrics specified in JSON files to perf stat. A metric is a formula that uses multiple events to compute a higher level result (e.g. IPC). Previously metrics were always tied to an event and automatically enabled with that event. But now change it that we can have standalone metrics. They are in the same JSON data structure as events, but don't have an event name. We also allow to organize the metrics in metric groups, which allows a short cut to select several related metrics at once. Add a new -M / --metrics option to perf stat that adds the metrics or metric groups specified. Add the core code to manage and parse the metric groups. They are collected from the JSON data structures into a separate rblist. When computing shadow values look for metrics in that list. perf stat: Add support to measure SMI cost Implementing a new --smi-cost mode in perf stat to measure SMI cost. During the measurement, the /sys/device/cpu/freeze_on_smi will be set. The measurement can be done with one counter (unhalted core cycles), and two free running MSR counters (IA32_APERF and SMI_COUNT). In practice, the percentages of SMI core cycles should be more useful than absolute value. So the output will be the percentage of SMI core cycles and SMI#. metric_only will be set by default. SMI cycles% = (aperf - unhalted core cycles) / aperf Here is an example output. perf stat: Output JSON MetricExpr metric Add generic infrastructure to perf stat to output ratios for "MetricExpr" entries in the event lists. Many events are more useful as ratios than in raw form, typically some count in relation to total ticks. Transfer the MetricExpr information from the alias to the evsel. We mark the events that need to be collected for MetricExpr, and also link the events using them with a pointer. The code is careful to always prefer the right event in the same group to minimize multiplexing errors. At the moment only a single relation is supported. Then add a rblist to the stat shadow code that remembers stats based on the cpu and context. Then finally update and retrieve and print these values similarly to the existing hardcoded perf metrics. We use the simple expression parser added earlier to evaluate the expression. Normally we just output the result without further commentary, but for --metric-only this would lead to empty columns. So for this case use the original event as description. There is no attempt to automatically add the MetricExpr event, if it is missing, however we suggest it to the user, because the user tool doesn't have enough information to reliably construct a group that is guaranteed to schedule.
